Reflecting on My Path: A Personal Hair Journey

Back when I was around 12 years old, I had thick, long hair. I can vividly recall my mother delicately applying relaxers to my tresses. I loved the way my hair bounced and flowed afterwards. During my high school years when I experienced braids for the first time, I loved the simplicity and grace that accompanied the freedom from daily hair styling.

The narrative of my hair evolution shifted once again in my twenties, when I embarked on the journey of embracing my natural hair. The decision was not an easy one and it took several years of wavering before I could confidently nurture my natural locks. When I entered the realm of motherhood and welcomed my twins into my life, time became a precious commodity, causing my priorities to shift. I found solace in the simplicity of ponytails, buns, and wearing decorative scarves.

The underlying theme here is that my hair journey intricately wove itself around the various chapters of my life. My hairstyles transformed in tandem with my personal growth. This insight compels me to remind each of you, esteemed beauty supply owners, that every one of your cherished customers is on their unique hair journey.

e tend to believe that famous innovators or other “creative” people have some inherent quality that the rest of us don’t have. But the truth is — they don’t. They’ve simply cracked the code on how to consistently live in possibility instead of living in obstacle.

Visionary thinkers see possibilities. Always. Most of us mostly see obstacles, most of the time. We move through work, and life, by addressing whatever next obstacle falls into our path. We problem-solve the next issue on a project, we deal with the next customer complaint, we address the next challenge with our kids. But too rarely do we look up, survey the world, and make a conscious choice to shape our world to be the way we want it to be.

Having the specific skills for a particular job is important, but even the most qualified job applicant may not pan between the position and the workplace.

Visionary thinkers make that daily choice - to imagine the possibility of a different world, to hold on to that vision, and to refuse to let the obstacles limit their thinking. They live in possibility.

Visionary thinkers are open-minded, innovative & imaginative, willing to take risks, optimistic, and collaborative – all skills related to creative thinking. They regularly imagine, consider, and pursue new ideas and solutions.

The good news - all of these creative thinking skills are learnable! Anyone can become a more visionary thinker by learning to leverage the creative genius that’s already hidden inside.

One of the primary barriers living in possibility is the negativity bias, a cognitive bias, or mental shortcut, that all humans share. It’s the phenomenon that negative experiences have a greater impact -- on our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors -- than positive experiences do. That seems counter-intuitive, but there’s a wealth of research that proves negative affects us more than positive. As a result, we are much more motivated to avoid negative than to seek positive.

Our brains have evolved to excel at identifying potential negatives, so we can avoid them. It’s a survival mechanism, and it happens in the most primitive part of our brain – the amygdala. The amygdala is responsible for detecting threats and triggering the fight or flight response. It’s laser-focused and lightning fast at identifying potential problems. This instant identification of negatives is what can trap us into living in obstacle.

Living in possibility requires refusing to let the negativity bias rule our thinking. There are a few steps that can make a significant impact, helping us to manage around this pitfall and transform the way we think.

1. Pinpoint the problem. First, we must be able to spot when the negativity bias is at work. The easiest way to do that is by monitoring one simple phrase we say: “Yes, but….” On the surface, these words seem innocuous. And because we say them

and hear them so frequently, they don’t seem like a problem. However, this short phrase is a massive blockade to creative and visionary thinking. It dismisses any potential positives in an idea or concept, before even identifying what those positives might be. Instead, it focuses the energy and attention of both the speaker and the listeners on all the possible negatives. This can easily overwhelm any idea and immediately kill it.

2. Manage your mind. Once you’ve determined the negativity bias is at work (someone said “yes, but…”), the next step is to make a conscious choice to change your thinking. The key is to FIRST identify the potential positives in any idea, before focusing on the negatives. This sounds easy. But it’s actually quite hard. It’s counter to a basic instinct, so it really does require a conscious choice to think this way, plus very real discipline to put it into practice regularly.

3. Nix the negatives. The next critical step is to refrain from saying

the negatives out loud – at least not yet. The truth is, regardless that you’ve consciously chosen to identify the positives first, your brain will subconsciously identify the negatives anyway. It’s instinctive and instant. So even while you’re enumerating positives, your brain will be busy identifying negatives, too. But the simple trick of not saying those negatives out loud will help dramatically. Force yourself to speak out loud, and write down, the positives first.

4. Teach the team. When working with others, ask them to do the same. Help them understand that letting our natural negativity bias dominate the conversation

has the potential to immediately kill ANY idea. Let everyone know that, of course, there will be a time to solve the problems in the idea, but the first task is to identify the potential in the idea. If there aren’t enough potential positives, then it’s time to move to a new idea. But if the idea is visionary and can make a real difference, it’s imperative to hold off on the negativity bias momentarily and allow the brilliance of the idea to shine through.

5. Transform the troublesome term. Once the above steps have led you to a potentially winning idea, it’s time to address the problems with the idea. To continue to remain in possibility, you must change the conversation; you cannot return to “yes, but…” language. Instead, articulate the challenges as a “how might we…?” question. So, instead of saying “Yes, but it’s too expensive”, instead say “How might we do it more affordably?” This trick of flipping a problem statement into a problemsolving question is a neuroscience brain hack that will revolutionize your thinking and problem-solving.

This process of identifying positive potential first is the ONLY way to find big ideas. Every successful innovation, in any industry or endeavor, is the result of someone, or a team, choosing to live in possibility in this way.

Visionary thinking requires making space for ideas that, at first, seem scary or difficult. It takes some real courage to push past our immediate “yes, but…” response and instead focus the conversation on “what if…?” If we don’t hold ourselves accountable to look for the positives, we’ll never consider nor implement any truly new ideas. Visionary thinkers must master this skill and learn to live in possibility.

“I get paid for selling products. Deep down, I know some of my customers don’t need what I’m recommending, but I do it anyway. Nothing has happened to me as far as consequences go, but how wrong can it be if nobody is complaining. I’m not proud, but I am getting decent checks. It’s a living.”

The Downside of Misguided Incentives:

Short-Term Focus: In many cases, businesses with misguided incentives prioritize short-term gains over long-term sustainability. Employees who are only rewarded for immediate financial results or quick wins may overlook the importance of investing in innovation, customer satisfaction, and employee development. This narrow focus can limit the organization’s ability to adapt to changing market conditions and remain competitive in the long run. Do

you focus only on here and now, or do your incentives and consequences take the long-term into account?

Unethical Behavior: Misaligned incentives can lead to unethical behavior within an organization. Employees who are rewarded for meeting sales targets, for example, may resort to aggressive tactics, dishonesty, or cutting corners to meet those targets. This undermines trust, harms the company’s reputation, and puts it at risk of legal and regulatory consequences. What kind of ethics do your incentives encourage?

Silo Mentality: Incentives designed without considering the broader impact on different departments or teams can foster a silo mentality. When employees are rewarded based on individual performance metrics, collaboration and knowledge-sharing may suffer. This lack of cooperation can stifle innovation, impede problem-solving, and limit overall organizational effectiveness. Do your incentives and consequences encourage hoarding and silos or do they promote information sharing and collaboration?

Demotivation and Disengagement: Incentives that are meaningless can demotivate employees and create a sense of disengagement. Employees may lose intrinsic motivation and become disillusioned if the rewards do not align with their values, interests, or aspirations. This can result in decreased productivity, higher turnover rates, and a general decline in morale. Do employees care about the rewards or consequences you have in place?

Building Effective Incentive Structures

A strong system that is aligned with goals and values and regularly applied is the best offense and defense an organization play.

Tunnel Vision: Employees may develop tunnel vision when incentives are narrowly

Align with Long-Term Goals: Think about what matters. For example, are you focused on customer retention and satisfaction? If that’s the case, incentives should support those results. Additionally, there should be consequences to address behaviors employees choose that negatively affect retention and satisfaction. For instance, if the employees are rushing interactions, at a minimum, they should not receive a reward. Ideally, managers should address the behavior.

Foster Ethical Standards: When people do the right thing, they should receive recognition. When the opposite occurs, management must act quickly to coach, and correct, or cut ties if the first two approaches don’t align behavior. When unethical behavior is ignored, an aggressive cancer can develop. Left unchecked, what’s wrong can quickly become what’s normal.

Balance Individual and Team Goals: Strike a balance between individual performance and team collaboration. When designing incentives, promote both individual achievements and collective success, encouraging employees to collaborate and share knowledge. Additionally, think about consequences. How will you handle those who hoard and don’t think about the group’s success?

Evaluate and Adapt: Continuously review and evaluate the effects of your choices. Solicit feedback from employees, monitor unintended consequences, and make necessary adjustments to ensure incentives remain relevant and aligned with evolving organizational goals.

Incentives and consequences are powerful tools that can shape employee behavior and drive business outcomes. When designed and implemented correctly, incentives can fuel productivity, innovation, customer service, and sales. Furthermore, carefully chosen consequences can mean the difference between the right choice and the wrong one.

An Exclusive Interview With Lisa Finucane of Developlus

We had the privilege of interviewing Lisa Finucane about what makes this trailblazing brand tick. OTC: How did Developlus get its start?

Lisa Finucane: Female-owned and operated, Developlus got its start in Corona California as a developer manufacturer and quickly transitioned into the #1 manufacturer of bold hair color with our SPLAT color. Satin hair color emerged onto the market in 1991 as a vegan, cruelty-free color infused with soy protein and aloe vera.

OTC: What is your role at the company and how did you get involved with the brand?

Lisa: I am the National Director of Sales for Developlus’ professional and OTC channels. I was hired in February of 2023 to be part of the team that takes Satin Hair Color to new levels, finding new customers, and shedding light on this remarkable brand. I have an extensive background in hair color and the draw to Developlus was the culmination of the culture and the core values of the organization: Service Excellence, Integrity and Respect, High Performance, Accountability, and Execution. These core

values resonated with me and it was a perfect fit for this stage in my career.

OTC: Did you always want to have a career in the beauty industry?

Lisa: I became a “behind the chair” hairdresser in the early 1990’s- I was instantly “bitten” by the beauty bug and have not looked back. I was fortunate enough to educate, and work with many of the top global color brands. It is the best industry on earth.

OTC: What do you think makes the Satin brand stand out and what has contributed to its success?

OTC: Innovation is vital in the beauty industry. How does Developlus ensure that Satin stays on the cutting edge of technology and industry trends? Can you highlight any recent product innovations?

Lisa: Satin creates all of their innovations in house. With the company still being family owned, Steven Barnes, our COO and Head Chemist brings his family’s legacy and forward-thinking innovation. Our R&D and Marketing Team pair up together to research, develop, and test new hair color technology to create innovations that can add to the legacy of our brand.

OTC: Satin is known for its quality and diverse range of hair colors. How does Developlus ensure that the Satin brand addresses the unique and evolving preferences of its diverse customer base?

Lisa: Developlus is consistently monitoring and reacting to industry trends. Our “small but mighty” organization can easily pivot to the needs of our customer base by responding to the unique needs of our diverse base. Our small, close knit team works daily to meet the current and future needs of our customers as they are at the center of all we do.

OTC: Hair color trends often change rapidly. How does Satin stay ahead of these trends?

We have always had a safe and effective base formula developed which shows in our older products being supplied since 1994, but in 2009, we were able to solve the biggest challenges faced by individuals who wore hair systems or wigs by launching GHOSTBOND to the market. OTC: What is your role at the company and what drew you to the brand?

Ryan: My role at the company is CEO. I assumed this role in 2019 but have been working in the company since 2009. As we are the creators of the GHOSTBOND brand, we are the only source globally where distributors should be acquiring the brand from. Our aim was to create a safe and effective product for both hair technicians and hair or wig wearers. We understood there was a need in the market for a safe and effective alternative to solvent based adhesives. Our own mother was a master hair technician who suffered chemical poisoning from using these solvent based solutions for many years. This was the motivating factor behind developing a solution which was safe for everyone.

OTC: How do you keep your customer base informed and engaged with your brand?

Ryan: We typically send out emails and have our sales team on the phones, touching base with clients to ensure they have everything they need and stay up to date with the latest information. We will also be using the Clarity Codes app to release information on new product updates.

OTC: We’ve heard that counterfeit versions of GHOSTBOND have surfaced. How are you and your team addressing this issue?

Ryan: This is been a huge issue for us globally. Most counterfeits are coming out of China. GHOSTBOND is not a Chinese brand and we do not supply into China so if there are any GHOSTBOND products being purchased from China, they are not legitimate. We have been addressing this issue with aggressive legal action against both distributors and wholesalers who have been caught selling counterfeit goods through our globa investigations.

OTC: What steps has GHOSTBOND taken to ensure that store owners and customers can easily identify genuine products and avoid counterfeit ones?

Ryan: We have developed an anti-counterfeit software called Clarity Codes. This app allows the code on the top of our packaging to be scanned to confirm if it is legitimate. If a code is replicated on a counterfeit product, the customer and ourselves are notified of this as the codes have

proprietary technology inside of them that allow us get information on the source of the product.

OTC: Can you share any success stories or instances where GHOSTBOND’s efforts against counterfeiting have yielded positive results?

Ryan: Yes, we have successfully settled multiple high level lawsuits with wholesalers and distributors who were knowingly supplying counterfeit goods. Department of Homeland Security has also recently completed raids in the USA on behalf of our GHOSTBOND brand which has successfully put a stop to container loads of goods coming into the USA from China. We still have a lot of work to do, but our investigations are proving very effective.

OTC: How does GHOSTBOND collaborate with its authorized dealers to ensure a seamless and secure purchasing experience for store owners?

Ryan: We implement a range of strategies to ensure a seamless and secure purchasing experience for our suppliers. These experiences include:

1. Strict Authorization Process: By ensuring that wholesalers and distributors meet certain criteria and standards, brands can ensure they are partnering with reputable businesses that will uphold our brand image and values.

2. Exclusive Access to Products: Authorized resellers will have the advantage of receiving products before they become widely available, ensuring they always have the latest products in stock.

3. Secure Ordering Systems: To protect store owners’ financial and business data, we provide secure online portals or platforms for order placement and management.

4. Marketing and Promotional Support: We offer and send marketing materials, promotional items.

5. Regular Communication: We provide updates via emails, or direct

communications help keep resellers informed about product changes, promotional events, company news, and other vital information.

6. Protection Against Unauthorized Sellers: To maintain brand integrity and support authorized dealers, we regularly take actions against unauthorized sellers or counterfeit products.

Ryan: Our GHOSTBOND brand is currently expanding its’ line into new innovated adhesion technologies as well as a range of multi-cultural hair products such as Braid Gels, Brow Gel, Edge Wax, Hair Regrowth Serum, Detanglers, Curl Mousse, Braid Oil and many other products. We are currently undergoing a massive expansion in both the USA and Europe, increasing our manufacturing operations to 50,000sqft in Ireland and 27,500sqft in the USA due to be completed in early 2024.

OTC: Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Ryan: I would like to reconfirm to anyone currently carrying our GHOSTBOND or thinking about carrying it to understand that GHOSTBOND is a USA and European registered brand. It did not originate in China. GHOSTBOND is manufactured under strict ISO GMP guidelines to ensure that that the product being used on the skin is safe for everyone. If there are sales reps on the road offering GHOSTBOND for less than market standards, it is highly likely they are selling counterfeit goods.

Heatless curls are a great way to eliminate unnecessary damage from hot tools, and the stress on the hair strands is minimal. There are multiple ways to produce curls with no heat:

• Wrap your hair around a pair of socks when almost dry – leave in for a few hours (or overnight) and spray with hairspray to set your curls. Just remember: the smaller the sock, the tighter the curl.

• Braid your hair when it’s wet. Depending on the tightness of the braid, you’ll get anything from tight ringlets to loose waves.

• Rollers are classic and effective. After putting your rollers in, cover your head with a silk scarf to reduce static and keep them neat.

• Robe tie curls are incredibly easy and super comfortable to sleep in. Loop your hair around any robe tie (the thickness and how tight you wrap your hair will determine how your curls will come out) and tie with a hair tie. Keep in for a few hours or overnight.

Extra top tips:

• Try using a silk scrunchie instead of regular bands to hold your heatless curling method and keep loose strands at bay.

• If you’ve been to the salon and want to prolong your bouncy blow dry, use rollers to keep the shape of the style for longer, even overnight, and you’ll have salon-fresh locks until your next hair wash.

Popular hashtags on the app for the style include #howtostyleyourcurtainbangs which has surpassed 44.9 million views, #cutmycurtainbangs at 4.7 million and #curtainbangs at 3.6 billion.

Although it might seem tempting to take matters into your own hands, to avoid disappointment (and a potential hair-nightmare), it’s best to leave the chop to the experts. So, book an appointment at a salon and show your stylist photos of

what you want to go for. A professional will be able to advise you on which styles and cuts will suit you.

Wolf Cut

Another haircut that’s gone viral on TikTok this year is the ‘70s and ‘80s-inspired wolf cut. TikTok is a mecca for hacks that make your life easier, and haircare is no exception. Tips for improving hair health have seen a huge rise in interest across the platform, with users suggesting everyday items that can transform hair.

Rosemary oil, apple cider vinegar and rice water have been huge this year, with TikTok creators sharing their experiences introducing these common household products into their routines.

Searches for #ricewaterforhair have accumulated over 24.7 million views, #applecidervinegarforhairgrowth 129.8 thousand views and #rosemaryoilforhair totals at 15.1 million views.

How do they work?
