Many

of your customers are declaring their “chemical independence.” They’re making the switch from chemical relaxers back to pressed natural styles or naturally curly/wavy styles. However, there are plenty of customers who have no intentions of leaving their chemicals behind any time soon. When a customer shops an OTC store for hair care products, she’s searching for one of two things: products to maintain her chemically treated hair or products to care for her natural texture. Even if she wears a wig, extensions or weave, she needs products to care for the hair she has purchased as well as whatever she has going on underneath it.

While figuring out exactly what to share with you on this topic, I realized my answer was right in front of me: The things that I want to know are exactly what your customers want to know. It occurred to me that I am your customer!

I’ve gone from a love affair with the chemical relaxer, to transitioning and growing out my relaxer to being relaxer-free for almost two years. Thankfully, my stylists pointed me in the right direction during this transition, but for your female customers that are complete “do-it-yourselfers”—they could use your help with this. Sure they’ve looked at blogs, searched the Internet and perused YouTube for the latest hair care tips, but if you arm yourself with essential product knowledge and know-how, you create an opportunity to become a valuable ally to your customers.

While it’s true that women are making the switch to natural hair care options, please understand—the relaxer and other chemical treatments aren’t going anywhere. Stock products to accommodate the multiple hair care preferences of your customers. Don’t assume that every texture and style is the same. Talk with your customers about what they like to use on their hair and find out why. The information they share with you could be the catalyst to help increase your product knowledge and your bottom line.

Natural hairstyles or chemical treatments? Some customers are transitioning, but OTCs must service the entire market, not just one segment. Industry insiders answer this month’s question to help you focus on how to manage products for every treatment preference.

Customers are becoming more educated about the products that are being offered for use on their hair as it pertains to texture, method of styling, etc. Retailers must cater

to consumers that want both chemical treatments and products to care for natural hair textures.

What is an effective way for stores to market and merchandise these types of product offerings?

“A question must be asked about the support items that each customer uses.

The chemical customer has a need for items that add shine, even porosity, and give some degree of tackiness so as to hold styles in place. Aside from that, the chemical-treatment customer has a need for some type of appliance to arrange hair and make it easy to manage such as blow dryers, flat irons and curling wands. This is where the two worlds intersect.

For the person who wears hair naturally without chemicals but still wants to have a relaxed look, heat tools are the way to do it. On the other side of heat tools, organize products for Afro-centric styles, leading with organic and otherwise non-disputed ingredients.”

“The key word for growth in all parts of life is education. Education makes you more knowledgeable. So, if the distributor sales team is more knowledgeable of the products they are selling, they will promote and recommend those products more. The same goes for OTC personnel. The consumer is becoming more and more knowledgeable about the products they use. Consumers are using Facebook, YouTube and other Web vehicles to obtain and share beauty product tips.

Effective ways for the OTC stores to market and merchandise products vary.

The manufacturer has to assist with great literature about the products. For companies that use merchandisers, they can be utilized to restock literature at the OTC level. Stores can show manufacturer’s looped DVDs in-store to share product knowledge. Using hang tags on products is also a good vehicle for educating the consumer. Shelf talkers in the past have been a good vehicle for delivering any message about a product. However, many OTC stores are merchandising the products in more creative ways. This allows natural hair and chemical-treatment consumers to go right to their sections. Sampling is always a great way to at least get your consumers to try products, without the investment.

The best way to really merchandise these products is with in-store promotions.

This is the best way to get in front of the consumer to give them product knowledge, hair maintenance tips, exchange quality dialogue and most importantly, receive input from consumers about their wants and needs.”

t has been found that hair relaxing really began in Africa long before slavery started in the United States. There were no chemicals involved; instead the process was done with mud and clay. The sheer weight of the mud or clay was used to straighten the hair then left that way until rinsed out. This was generally done as part of a ceremony or other special occasion. It also helped to distinguish one tribe from another.

The French also straightened their hair by doing the same thing with heavy petrolatums until the invention of the first curling iron, called the Marcel iron, named after the tool’s inventor Marcel Grateau.

It was during the slavery period in America that the use of chemicals for hair relaxing began. Chemical hair relaxing started with the old-fashioned lye soap that was used primarily to wash clothes. The soap was made from lard with crystallized lye added to it. Then the ingredients were blended by being heated and stirred, then cut into cakes once they cooled. This formula was ideal at the time for getting groundin dirt and grease out of work clothes. By chance, the slaves tried washing heavy grime from their hair with the same lye soap and discovered that it left the hair straighter than before. They then found that combing the suds through the hair further enhanced the straightening effect. The problem was that the slaves had no knowledge of neutralization; therefore the results of using this lye soap were sometimes disastrous.

Their hair would turn red, fall out and sores even developed on the scalp. Later, purely by accident, the slaves found that rinsing the hair with lemon juice or vinegar—also known as neutralizing—greatly reduced these side effects. Later, mashed potatoes replaced lard as the base ingredient for a chemical relaxer.

It wasn’t until the mid-1940s that a commercially manufactured relaxer was marketed. Lard and mashed potatoes were replaced with petrolatum as well as emulsifiers for a smoother application.

It was used mostly in black barber shops and was nicknamed “The Konk.” Black celebrities of the time were the catalyst that gave rise to the recognition and popularity of chemical relaxers. To overcome a red condition caused by the active ingredient in the relaxer lifting natural color from the hair, the neutralizing ingredient was added to a

Finished Product shampoo and a black rinse was added to the system. A pretreatment petrolatum—now known as ‘base oil’—was added to reduce scalp burns. Initially, chemical relaxers started commercially in barbershops because men wore their hair shorter and for that reason the hair was in better condition to accept the harsh chemicals. The hair of black females was more likely to become damaged by relaxers because they were pressing and curling their hair. The longer the hair, the weaker it was from the constant heat treatments that usually took place every two weeks or less. Since that time, hair relaxing has evolved and is now more popular in beauty salons than barbershops. In the 1950s, Johnson Products Company in Chicago marketed the first relaxer designed for use by women. It was a milder, lower pH formula that worked slower but more effectively on longer and somewhat weaker hair. Because of the lower pH, a black or brown rinse was no longer necessary.

Since the early 1960s, relaxers and relaxer systems have been continuously reinvented. First was the no base relaxer. With this system, the base cream was integrated into the relaxer formula. Then came the no-lye—calcium and grenadine hydroxide—relaxers. These relaxers were milder and less damaging, but still irritated the scalp and dried out the hair. The no-lye relaxers did not penetrate as deep into the hair as sodium based relaxers and also had to be retouched more often. Next was the thio-based relaxer that grew out of the curly perm market. This relaxer was first known as a break down cream or “rearrange” used on extremely textured hair prior to a curly perm for rendering the hair easier to rod for the curl. This led to the texturizers that removed about 50 percent of the natural curl in order to render the hair more manageable. Other forms of texturizing were to use sodium relaxers with a lower pH than normally found in relaxers. These were known as “blow outs.” Next were the conditioning relaxer systems.

Although there were no organic conditioners in the relaxers there were conditioners in the follow-up products that were a part of the total system. Perhaps the most notable was a method called normalizing.

This was a system of applying a Keratin protein rich conditioner into the hair prior to the neutralizing shampoo step. The purpose was to get the conditioners deep into the hair before the active ingredient in the neutralization closed down the cuticle and cortex locking out the conditioners in the final step of the system. This created a new level of softness, silkiness, manageability and less hair breakage later.

When hair relaxing first became popular, it was referred to as a reverse permanent. This term was associated with this service because for years prior, there were products designed to put a permanent curl or kink in straight hair. These were ammonium thioglyclate “cold wave” products that were simply referred to as permanents. So, when relaxers came along that were designed to do just the reverse on highly textured hair, they were called reverse permanents. The term reverse permanent soon gave way to the term hair straightener. When it was discovered by the US Fair Trade Commission (FTC) that so-called hair straighteners did not straighten hair without a certain amount of physical manipulation by the person applying the straightener, the terminology was changed to hair relaxers.

Hair relaxing products have been reinvented and improved by manufacturers to perform with less damage and creativity. The active sodium hydroxide ingredient in some relaxers has been replaced by other chemicals that are safer and less damaging to the hair.

Although these other ingredients have radiantly beautiful end results, for the most part they do not last as long or penetrate as deep into the hair shaft.

It can be overwhelming for consumers to know which products to choose for their hair type or desired style. This is even truer for the OTC stores trying to help a customer find the products she needs— because we know that once we satisfy her hair care needs, she’ll return again and again to make additional purchases.

Fortunately, there are simple things OTC stores can do to help educate their customers, and oftentimes, they can enlist the help of manufacturers in their mission to share key information with customers.

It’s important to know what essential ingredients make up a hair care product. The easiest way to do this is to read the ingredient list on the back of the label. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) requires ingredients to be listed in order of greatest volume to least, but here’s a little-known fact: Any ingredients that show up in a formula at less than one percent can be listed in any order after the predominant ingredients. So, if an ingredient shows up toward the end of a list, it’s likely that the formula uses only a small amount of it. Also, in many instances, anything listed below a fragrance is most likely in concentrations less than one percent.

Three easy tips for helping customers choose the right hair care products

because manufacturers are required to list what is known as the “INCI” name of an ingredient. For example, the company M3 Cosmetic Labs does this on their Arganics™ product labels. They try to make reading the ingredients a little easier by putting in parentheses the more recognizable name. For example, argan oil shows up in the ingredient lists as “Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil,” but for ease of reference, the company adds “argan” in parentheses. In all cases, when in doubt, OTC stores can contact the manufacturer of a product to get clarification of ingredients.

Know the ingredient trends. What’s new and innovative—and why?

The list of innovations in ingredients can be long, but here are a few highlights: • Extra virgin olive oil/argan oil – both are ideal for all hair styles and types because of their moisturization and hair-restoring benefits. These ingredients are most beneficial in leave-in products like moisturizer treatments, sheen sprays, styling gels and wraps.

• Chelants – a chelant simply means an ingredient that has the ability to bind calcium hydroxide and heavy metals so that they can be more effectively removed from a surface, like the hair shaft and scalp. For users of no-lye relaxers, a chelant or chelating rinse is particularly beneficial because calcium often builds up on the hair, leaving it looking dull and chalky and vulnerable to breakage. A chelating rinse, for example, is helpful in removing the build-up of calcium deposits on the hair shaft.

• Sulfates – sulfates show up in a wide array of health and beauty products (look in the ingredient listing for sodium lauryl sulfate). They act as surfactants and are responsible for delivering

K-t-K rich, lathery suds in shampoos. In recent months, sulfates have received significant media coverage due to reports of health risks, though many products still use them safely. However, for thick, coarse highly textured hair—sulfates can pose another complication: Because this type of hair tends to be dry to start with, sulfates can strip the hair and scalp of natural oils. Sulfatefree shampoos tend to be milder and gentler and a good formula will be no less effective at cleansing. Manufacturers are making great strides in offering innovative, sulfate-free formulas that use alternative surfactants that will not irritate the scalp or rob the hair of its natural moisture.

Lastly

With an overwhelming amount of products and formula variations on the market, OTC stores can help customers understand which products will work best for their particular hair style or type (natural, relaxed, etc) by providing visual cues in the store. A visual cue can be something as simple as a poster or a photocopied article from a beauty magazine. Following are a couple of ideas to consider; keep in mind that many manufacturers, M3 Cosmetic Labs included, are more than willing to share this kind of information with OTC stores.

• Beauty articles and online haircare blogs often spot celebrity hairstyles and explain to their readers how to achieve that celebrity’s particular look using certain styling tools and products. Keep an eye out for such articles and share them with customers when they come into the store. Posting such articles near a featured product is often a great way to help educate customers at the shelf.

• Brands love to brag about the media coverage they receive and are not shy about spreading the word, so it’s a great idea to join brand e-mail lists and social networks so you can learn when a particular line is being reviewed or recommended by a beauty magazine or blog. Web sites, product sites, YouTube videos and blogs are everywhere concerning this topic.

Some retailers have already recognized that the do-it-yourself attitude promoted by many of these outlets has created an opportunity to facilitate success in their stores.

The do-it-yourself customer might not have the extra funds available to consistently visit the salon or purchase professional products that are usually offered at higher price points. The do-it-yourself customer might be curious about trying a variety of the products she’s heard about and seen online. She might be interested in finding and trying a product that her friend recommended. To facilitate natural hair care sales success in your store, it’s important to arm yourself with knowledge about natural textures. Everything from basic care to shampooing, maintenance and styling offers an opportunity for success. Following are a few tips when it comes to caring for and styling naturally curly hair.

Just as there are foes and heroes in life, such is the case when it comes to caring for naturally curly hair. There is no “one size fits all” solution when caring for natural textures. Despite sharing the natural label, this type of hair still comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Curls are different shapes, the density of hair can be fine or thick. The amount of hair a customer has could be a little or a lot. True—you’re not a stylist. But you and your staff members are most certainly customer service vessels.

Part of providing good customer service—and more importantly in this economy, value—is being knowledgeable. Your willingness to discuss hair care products and hair care methods with customers will most likely rest on the amount of confidence you have regarding these topics.

Excessive heat styling:

Excessive use of flat irons or other heated styling tools on curly hair can permanently (thermally) straighten the hair. When too much heat is used too frequently, the heat can break the bond in the hair cuticle. For customers that prefer to wear their natural hair curly, make them aware that the less heat they use, the better. Recommend that your customers use a diffuser attachment on low heat if they absolutely must blow dry their hair.

Additionally, let them know that if they’re able, it’s much better to allow their hair to air dry. Recommend that customers with naturally curly styles manipulate their hair as little as possible while using the blow dryer and diffuser.

Dryness: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

Curly hair needs moisture. Silicones and other ingredients can sit on top of the hair giving the appearance of moisture, but do not penetrate the hair shaft to actually provide moisture. Argan oil, olive oil and other natural ingredients are great options for curly-haired customers. Remind customers that kinky, coily, curly hair is very fragile and prone to breakage. This is because the oil produced by the scalp does not travel down the hair shaft as easily as it does on straight hair. Handle curly hair with care!

SLS: SLS stands for sodium lauryl sulfate, which is a sur-

factant and could cause unnecessary drying of the hair. SLS is a common ingredient in many shampoos. What you may find with many shampoos formulated specifically for curly hair is that they are SLS-free. When curly customers shampoo their hair, recommend that they use a shampoo that is SLS-free. Additionally, when customers complete the shampooing process, recommend that they squeeze excess water out of the hair as opposed to roughly towel drying the hair. Towel drying requires customers to manipulate the hair more than necessary. Towel drying could also cause frizziness in curly hair.

As you seek to offer advice and guidance to customers, keep in mind that above all it’s important to do your own research. Just as customers conduct research online and among their friends about products, you should do the same. As you introduce products into your inventory—don’t forget to research the products on your own. To stay on top of your industry, it’s important to conduct this research. Speak to product sales reps that visit your store about the products they offer. Speak to the sales staff at your local distributor. Attend education sessions offered by manufacturers and distributors. Or, if nothing is being offered, ask your suppliers to conduct sessions for you and your staff. You might even ask them to hold an in-store event at your location. This way, while your customers are getting educated and asking questions—you can feel free to do the same.

Multicultural celebrities promote a lot of products. Some of them have made a particularly good link between their talents and their endorsements and brand promotions. Dorinda Clark-Cole is a gospel evangelist, and two-time Grammy award winning singer whose CDs include Live in Houston: The Rose of the Gospel and Take it Back. Her bio calls her the “church girl.” Since black women are known for a keen fashion sense and a propensity to dress up—particularly for church—who better to promote a fashion Web site for Terramina, aptly named www.church-suits.com. Here, a variety of stylish suits on high-heeled models with hats are on display. Clark-Cole has a clothing line, the DCCRose Collection for Terramina. She endorses cosmetics, On Rite hair extensions and wig products. She has a General Mills sponsored radio show, Serving up Soul, which airs in Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Ohio and Texas. Among show topics she includes the advice of six guests experts on fitness, cooking, finance, skin care and makeup—all high interest topics for black women.

A number of celebrities who endorse products—like Beyonce and Lisa Raye who were covered in part one of this two-part series—are known on a one-name basis. Brandy Norwood, simply known as “Brandy” has endorsed Sensationnel’s Pro 10 hair extensions. Another one-namer, Usher, does product endorsement for the credit card company, MasterCard. Singer Rihanna endorses several beauty products including Clinique, CoverGirl, Iconic Fragrances and Secret body spray. She has also spoken for Nike, JC Penney, Gucci and Totes.

Multicultural celebrities who endorse products are usually not the sole face of a brand. Actress Zoey Deschanel has joined with a multicultural counterpart; Solange Knowles—Beyonce’s sister—in point-of-purchase promotions for the London-based Rimmel beauty products company. The company has also asked Puerto Rican model and fashion designer, Alejandra Ramos Munoz, to join its collection of endorsers. This trend to celebrity multicultural endorsements in the examples below are a true sign to men and women of color that a particular brand or service is for them and can meet their needs.

ow is it that companies that have been around for more than 100 years failed in this economic downturn while other younger companies like Apple, Facebook, Wal-Mart and The Huffington Post continued to grow? It is a similar picture for many lesser-known, mid-sized companies: some have failed and others have thrived, irrespective of their industry, size or location.

It is the best of times and the worst of times. Too many businesses are reacting in fear, pulling back and struggling. There are 10 key differences between a thriving company and a floundering one in this economy. Ask yourself, are you:

Sticking to your industry or crossing the boundaries?

The struggling businesses spend a lot of time try to copy the “big guys” in their industry and wonder why this approach does not work for them. Successful businesses seem to ignore the big guys and focus on current and prospective customers. When probed further it was found that many of these successful businesses are finding opportunities at the overlap of two or more industries. Why do people give up so easily? Let’s start with your New Year’s resolutions.

It is easy to get excited about resolutions and the promises they afford on January 1. Here’s the question: Are you excited enough to get really serious about the process and ultimately follow through to completion? Studies prove that goals and resolutions barely exist until you get them in writing.

When they go to document it begins to be real and viable. You can see it, show it to others, or display it on your refrigerator as a reminder. When you don’t write goals down, they are much like the wind—here for the moment then gone forever. Here are six barriers that keep our goals from becoming a reality. Let’s consider them along with some solutions:

Step number one is having the courage to get started on your clarified goals. Get fired up about getting started and go for it! Seeing even a marginal amount of progress is all it takes to inspire you to take the next step.

#5. Lack of congruence: Your goals

need to be in sync not only with your belief system, but also with your other goals, and your capabilities. If it is too outlandish or unrealistic, the incongruence of it will short circuit your belief in your ability to get it done.

6. Lack of focus:

Writing down clarified goals is the beginning of an exciting process, if you can keep your focus. Cavett Robert defined character as “the ability to carry out a worthwhile plan long after the mood in which it was made has left you.” Can you vow to stay focused on the vision? The difference between high performers and mediocre producers is a focused intensity accompanied by the perseverance.

Few people realize the power and potential derived from crafting one’s “magnetic compelling purpose.” During times of challenge like these, people tend to gravitate either toward scarcity or abundance. The majority who go toward scarcity are focused on problems and the negative aspects of their existence. Those who go toward abundance are more focused on possibilities and progress. That prosperity consciousness is what inspires many people to go for it! This is not about whom your daddy is, or where you went to school, or how old you are. Freedom to excel in America is your individual right.

If you can articulate what you really want, put it in writing, fine-tune it and you are on your way. Serious resolutions and statements of purpose tend to cause one to behave the way the person they hope to become behaves.

Relaxer consumers want to relax. They want hair that’s stylish and manageable. They also want chemical choices that are less damaging, longer-lasting and less reliant on thermal styling. ver 75 percent of African-American women use products to alter their curl pattern. Multicultural women all share an embarrassment of textural riches— From tight ringlets to loose waves; from one coil per inch to five coils per inch. OTC consumers want to tame their texture. The primary objective for using chemicals is to uncoil the tightly formed curl pattern. It is very common to mix thermal straightening with chemical use. But the truth is that consumers are dissatisfied with the finished look a short time after relaxer application. Relaxer treatments last four to eight weeks. However, touch-ups are usually required more often due to the appearance of new growth and/or uneven application of the chemical yields a dull, rough appearance that requires a reapplication. Daily thermal styling is also essential. This often leads to breakage. Highly alkaline relaxer products also tend to increase hair loss that might be permanent.

Consumers that prefer to abstain from chemically altering their hair wear various styles of twists, locks and cornrows or wigs. Locks are permanent, but braids and twists can be undone.

For each type of physical, thermal or chemical restructuring, maintenance items are required to condition and style.

There is a new alternative that is attracting OTC consumers.

Keratin-based thermal reconditioning is the new category of relaxer alternatives. These products cannot be called relaxers. However, they straighten, infuse natural protein and restore lost body.

There are a multitude of truths and consequences associated with these products. Whether Japanese or Brazilian, keratin therapy is intriguing the multicultural consumers. The truth is that keratin is a protein that comprises nearly 90 percent of human hair. In fact, it strengthens and restores the hair. But, keratin is not the active. The active is a carcinogenic cocktail of formaldehyde or its derivatives.

The keratin straightening process fortifies the hair through the use of a natural protein and then alters the structure so that the hair will remain straight. Keratin is a basic protein found in the hair, horns and nails of mammals. Keratin increases health of hair and reduces frizz but it does not straighten the hair. The second-stage chemicals create the straightening effect by semi-permanently altering the structure of the hair. For some the result can last for two to four months. Relaxers last half as long. This process has become popular for multicultural and multiracial hair textures. Newer versions have been created to address the tighter curl pattern of African-American hair types. OTC dealers have not been involved in the category thus far. Most systems are only available to salons. However, the maintenance items which must be used to extend or refresh the treatment are vital purchases available at retail. One system is being launched as an at-home kit. It will be made available for all hair types in multiple distribution channels.

The truth about keratin “relaxers” is that they are here to stay. Consumers and stylists have opted to wear masks during

Unlike chemical straighteners and relaxers that have a very high pH level (very high alkalinity), the pH of keratin treatments is in the four to five range. Water has a pH of seven.

If one were to consider the keratin treatment as a companion to the relaxer process, the implications could be revolutionary. Longer time between relaxer treatments could mean less kits sold and more quantities of higher margin keratin treatments sold. This could mean more high-profit oils and heat protectants and styling items sold. These products could extend relaxer treatments and restore the damage done. The truth and consequences of enhancing relaxed hair can mean higher profits for the OTC dealer. Instead of opting to go natural, consumers may seek an alternative chemistry; or suffer the consequences.

Consumers are fleeing the category and seeking alternatives to relaxer treatments. As well, in these economic times consumers who prefer to remain relaxed want to extend the time between relaxer treatments or salon visits. Silicone, argan oil and

Whatever the chemistry, consumers are obsessed with taming their curls, frizzies and waves. Modern day relaxer kits are better than those from over several decades ago. The combination of milder chemicals with the typical hydroxide chemicals has offered an improved alternative. Consumers want more—they want the truth.

They want technology that will protect their hair and improve the appearance of their relaxed styles. With keratin treatments and all other chemical processes, heat is considered a co-conspirator to the damage. Yet, any product that minimizes the need for daily thermal styling would be beneficial. OTC dealers need to be aware of the truth or suffer the consequences. While the FDA does not aggressively monitor the use of keratin products and the necessary formaldehyde component, there is a need to make sure the products brought into the stores are as safe as possible. Read the labels. Make sure the systems designed for salon use are only sold to professionals. In the meantime, be aware that every salon system will require the maintenance items which are keratin based.

Watch out for claims and disclaimers that are misleading and dishonest. Consumers want the truth and will determine their own consequences.

The authenticity of the Mixed Chicks brand is evident everywhere. It’s evident in the creators of the brand, Wendi LevY and Kim Etheredge, it’s evident in the effectiveness of the products and it’s evident in speaking with Brad Kaaya, the marketing director/creative officer for Mixed Chicks.

Kaaya recently spoke with OTC Beauty Magazine about the brand, the Mixed Chicks products and why the line continues to please beauty supply partners and multicultural customers everywhere.

OTC Beauty Magazine (OTC): Can you tell us a little bit about the inception of this company and the inspiration for the Mixed Chicks products?

Brad Kaaya (BK): For years, multicultural people with hard to manage hair traveled from store to store, trying to blend products in a hopeless attempt to tame their locks. Wendi Levy and Kim Etheredge, two “mixed chicks,” created the Mixed Chicks product line because they needed it personally. Then, something happened.

Friends and family started encouraging them to package it and soon they had a full blown business running out of the garage. Looking at our warehouses now filled with product, it is hard to believe, but the beginning was very humble.

OTC: What is the culture like at Mixed Chicks? How does this culture affect day-to-day operations and product development?

BK: Because Kim and Wendi are their products, we always develop strategies and products based on what they would want for themselves.

As for the culture, we are function mixed with a casual style. Even with the way we talk and dress…there is a casual, California-eclectic energy here. Our employees are hired if we think they can bring something to the table and still “get with the program.”

OTC: Please explain how your OTC store partners and our readers can benefit from carrying the Mixed Chicks products.

BK: We could go on and on about how cute our packaging is, how poignant and pertinent to today’s multicultural market our message is, but all of that is secondary to this fact: The Mixed Chicks products perform. When store owners put us on their shelves, customers— new customers—show up again and again. At the end of the day, we only make money because our salon and beauty supply store partners are making money.

OTC: What sort of feedback do you get from the OTC stores that currently carry the Mixed Chicks products?

BK: They are so happy that Mixed Chicks products please their customers. They want to know what we are doing to sustain such sales.

OTC: With so many different hair care maintenance and natural curl lines becoming available in the consumer market, what makes the Mixed Chicks line stand out? What is the point of difference for this line?

BK: In short I would say, “authenticity.” It goes back to what I said about the Mixed Chicks’ culture. Kim and Wendi are mixed chicks… they called themselves that growing up. Other multicultural fans get very excited about using a product that was developed specifically for them. But beyond that, I am proud to say Mixed Chicks crosses color lines. We recognize that there are plenty of people who are not mixed that have curly or frizzy hair and yes, they can use our Mixed Chicks, also.

BK: Mixed Chicks is primarily a curly hair system that will tame frizz and define curls. Our customers love the wash and go simplicity. It has become a morning ritual for Mixed Chicks users. Most can apply our leave-in to wet hair and air dry—it’s best not to towel or blow

dry. When retailers recommend the products, it is also important for them to remember that within the same families, there can often be a variety of hair textures.

The great thing about this line is that while a family member with curls may use a lot of leave-in, another family member with tightly curled hair may use our detangling deep conditioner more, while another family member with straight hair may use more of our hair silk for polish. It really is a flexible hair care line.

OTC: Please tell us a little bit about the HIS MIX products—your line for men.

BK: HIS MIX is almost identical to the Mixed Chicks line. I use HIS MIX because I—like many of our male customers—prefer the masculine packaging. HIS MIX consists of just two skus: a shampoo and leave-in. Some guys don’t bother with the traditional conditioning step—they just go straight to the leave-in.

OTC: Approximately how many skus does Mixed Chicks have? How do you determine when the time is right to add a new product?

BK: Our line consists of seven primary skus. We have others in development, but we don’t want to move too fast and put something out just to put it out. Wendi is adamant that any new products be special.

OTC: Please tell us about any Mixed Chicks point-of-purchase display material that you have available to OTC stores.

BK: We have the usual suspects like shelftalkers and posters, but we are coming out with some unique in-store displays— specifics on these displays are very hush-hush at the moment—that our stores should be excited about this year. We have also done individual banners for stores on a case by case basis. We realize not every store has space for a 20 foot banner, but if they ask for one, we’ll come up with a plan.

OTC: Mixed Chicks also offers other items such as shirts, soap and more. Are those items available for retailers to purchase for resale as well?

BK: Soaps and brushes are available now. We have some shirts and other clothing that we will eventually make available.

OTC: Mixed Chicks has a presence in several consumer and stylist publications through advertising and also various editorial and celebrity endorsements. What tips do you have to help OTC storeowners leverage this presence to promote the sale of Mixed Chicks products in their stores?

BK: Stores are welcome to reprint our ads or ask us for copies to display in their stores. It is also a good idea for stores to consider arranging ads that tie-in with us.

OTC: What kinds of educational material does Mixed Chicks provide to retail partners for the product lines? Does this material educate the storeowner, the consumer or both?

BK: We have an instructional DVD that does most of the work.

continued from p72 their own copy. We also provide brochures that explain the basics. In addition to that, although our growth is off the charts, Wendi and Kim are still regularly on the phone having conversations with customers, stylists and store managers about using our products.

OTC: What type of presence does Mixed Chicks have on the Internet and how does this help facilitate the success of the brand?

BK: We began on the Internet.

There was a time when stores didn’t know who we were so the only way we got the word and the product out was via the net. We still sell online at www.mixedchicks.net. As time goes by, our Web site is starting to play more of a support role in driving business into the stores and salons. Once in a while the Web site causes some confusion when customers see a different price online, but at the end of the day, because of shipping charges, our products are actually cheaper per bottle in the stores than online.

OTC: What are some of the newest trends that you’ve seen in the multicultural hair care industry and how do you think Mixed Chicks has answered the consumer demand to meet those trends?

BK: The biggest thing I see, are more and more multicultural people being used in beauty product advertising. We’d like to think we played a big role in making the big companies see value in the multicultural market. But regardless of what the big corporations spend in ad dollars, we still have a loyal army of customers with beautiful big mouths saying good things about us behind our backs.

As I keep saying—and I am quoting Kim here—Kim and Wendi are their products. They are mixed chicks and people genuinely appreciate the authenticity.

OTC: What do you feel is the biggest challenge that Mixed Chicks faces doing business in the beauty industry today? How is the company rising to that challenge?

BK: Well, the economy is obviously an issue. We are not the cheapest, but we are not by any means, the most expensive. What we have found is that many customers say they were able to clear their shower of the loads of products they tried before Mixed Chicks that did not work. Because of this, they are able save money by spending less on other products that provide more promises than performance.

이 물이 솟아 나온다. 이 원리는 우리가 세상을 살아 가는데도 접목이 된다. 타인들에게 조그마한 것을 베풀었을 때, 원하던 원하지 않던, 더욱 커다란 것으로 돌아올 때가 많이 있다. 간혹, 기업들은 이를 전략적으로 이용하기도 한다. 예로, 사회에 기부나 환원을 하게 되면 기업 이미지가 상승하여 그들의 제품이 많이 팔리는 경우를 들 수 있다. 이러 한 경우는 베푼다기 보다는 ‘전략’ 이라는 냄새(물론, 좋은 취지로 행하는 기업들도 많이 있다)가 조금 나기는 하 지만, 어쨌든 결과는 좋게 만들어 지는 것이다. 이번에 OTC 뷰티 매거진에서 인터뷰를 한 조지아주의 리디아 스프 링스에 위치한 Beauty 7 Mart #9의 오성찬, 오정희 사장 부부는 ‘전략’과는 아주 거리가 먼, 베푸는 경영을 하고 있는 사람들이다. 이들이 베품으로 인해 어떠한 혜택을 받고 있는지 이야기를 들어보자.

수익의 분배 오사장 부부는, 80년대에 한창 회자 되었 던 ‘병아리 감별사’ 라는 특이한 직업을 갖고 89년도에 도미를 하였다. 병아리 감 별로, 그 당시 꽤나 괜찮은 수입을 만들 기는 했지만, 일을 하면서 받는 스트레스 는 대단했다고 한다. “지금 제가하고 있 는 스토어 경영의 5배 정도의 스트레스를 받았던 것 같습니다.” 라는 오사장은 그 당시부터 미래를 계획하며 뷰티 서플라 78

이 스토어에서 파트타임으로 일을 했다 고 한다. 결국 지난 2007년에 5년간 파트 타임으로 일을 하던 스토어를 인수하며, 현 스토어의 오너가 되었다. 오사장은 스 토어를 인수한 지는 4년이 채 안 되었지 만, 뷰티 서플라이 경력은 20년이 된 베 테랑이다. 스토어는 크지도 작지도 않은 3,600sq ft의 규모인데 반해 직원은 8명 이라고 한다. 표면적으로 생각하면 엄청 나게 장사가 잘 돼서 그 많은 인원이 필

요하다는 생각이 들겠지만 오사장은 “이 것은 일종의 수익의 분배라고 생각합니 다” 라는 말을 한다. 받은 만큼 나누자 라 는 오사장의 생각이 깊이 반영된 것이다. 또 한가지 특이한 점은, 대부분의 직원들 이 전도사라는 것이다. 이 대목에서 오사 장 부부가 신앙인 이라는 것을 대번에 알 수 있었다.

현재 주위에 8개정도의 뷰티 서플라이 스토어들이 있다고 한다. 숫자로만 보자면 굉장 한 경쟁이 예상되는 지역일 것이라 생각된다. 하지만 오사장은 “제가 복이 있는지, 주 위의 스토어들은 가격에 관한 경쟁이 거의 없는 편입니다. 물론, 서로 개인적인 친분을 가지고 있기도 합니다” 라고 한다. 요즘같이 전국적으로 무분별한 경쟁이 점점 심해지 고 있는 양상으로 볼 때, 바람직한 현상이 아닐 수 없다. 혹시 가격 담합이 있었냐는 질 문에 “그런 것은 없었습니다. 그저 다들 좋으신 분들일 뿐입니다” 라는 말로 질문을 무 색하게 하였다. 물론, 조금 떨어진 지역에서 가격을 낮춰 판매를 하고 있는 스토어들이 있다고 한다. 이에 오사장은 “가격으로 같이 경쟁을 하는 것 보단, 손님들에게 다른 제 품을 권하는 편입니다” 라고 한다. 기존에 제품을 사용하고 있는 손님들에게 다른 제품 으로 회유하는 것이 쉬운 일은 아니다. 하지만 가격으로 맞서 경쟁하는 것 보다는 훨씬 긍정적인 효과를 만들어 내는 방법임에는 틀림없다.

손님들의 행복 단골을 만드는 노하우에 관한 질문에 오사장은 “저희가 친절해 서 온다는 소리를 많이 듣는 편입니다. 저희 직원들도 모두 전도 사님들이어서 그런지 손님들에게 매우 친절하게 대합니다” 라 고 한다. 약간 상투적이긴 하지만 ‘친절’이라는 것이 경영을 함 에 있어서 강력한 무기가 됨은 모두가 잘 알고 있는 사실이지만, 실천하기가 그리 쉬운 것만은 아니다. 오사장은 또 하나의 비법 을 이야기 하였는데, 그것은 바로 ‘선물공세’ 이다. “들어오는 대부분의 손님들에게 $1 한도 안의 상품들이나 샘플을 무료로 드리고 있습니다” 라며, 가격을 깎아 주지는 않지만 그 작은 선 물이 오히려 더욱 커다란 효과가 있다고 한다. 사실 물건값을 깎 아 줘도 그리 고마워하기 보다는 의례 그렇게 해야 한다는 생각 을 하는 소비자들이 있다. 하지만 무료로 주는 선물이나 샘플을 당연시 생각하는 소비자들은 그리 많지 않을 것이다. 또한, $1 이라는 가격은 판매가격이기 때문에 실질적으로는 그보다 적은 비용으로 손님들을 기쁘게 해주는 것이다. “스토어에 들어온 손 님들을 기분 좋게 만드는 것이 관건 아니겠습니까?” 라는 오사 장의 표정에 ‘베품’의 기쁨이 묻어나 있었다.

부지런한 재고관리 새로운 제품을 선정할 때에는 주로 세일즈맨들의 의견을 수렴 하는 편이며, 신상품들은 앞쪽에 진열을 하고, 고객들에게 많이 어필을 하려 한다고 한다. 또한 손님들이 찾는 상품들은 항상 적 어놓고 손님들의 질문이 2~3번 반복될 시에는 제품을 구비 한 다고 한다. 요즘같이 새로운 제품들이 쏟아져 나오는 상황에선 업계 관계자나 손님들의 말에 귀를 기울이는 것이 현명한 방법 일 것이다. 또한, 오래된 재고는 현재 거의 없는 상태라고 하는 데, 대부분 악성 재고가 별로 없는 스토어를 보면 소량의 주문 을 자주하는 패턴을 유지하는 것으로, 오너들이 부지런한 경우 가 많이 있다. 오사장도 본인이 그 중 한명일 것이라는 것에 부 정은 하지 않았다.

베품의 법칙 “첫 소산을 하나님한테 드리면 너의 모든 일들을 책임진다 라는 성경말씀을 굳게 믿고 있습니다. 그래서 1월 1일의 수익금은 무 조건 선교헌금으로 내고 있습니다” 라는 오사장에게, 조금 추상 적이지 않냐는 질문을 해 보았는데, 오사장은 이에 “저한테는 가장 현실적인 방법입니다” 라는 말로 대답을 하였다. 오사장 은 그러한 마음가짐으로 인해 모든 분위기가 좋은 쪽으로 형성 되는 것 같다고 덧붙였다. 또한 “베푸는 것은 10배로 돌아온다 는 생각합니다” 라고 하며, 스토어의 직원과 고객들에게 베풀어 야 함을 강조 하였다. 하지만 오사장은 ‘10배’라는 본인의 핑계 를 만들어 놨을 뿐, 그저 남들에게 베푸는 것이 좋고 몸에 베어 있음을 다시 한번 느낄 수 있었다. 직원들에게 따뜻한 점심 한끼, 손님들에게 친절한 미소, 세일즈 맨 들과의 좋은 관계. 이러한 것들이 별거 아닌 요소들이라 생각 될 수 있겠지만, 거기에서 파생되는 긍정적인 효과는 기대 이상 일 수 있다. 오사장은 “대인 관계를 잘 하다 보면 반드시 도움이 됩니다. 진심으로 사람을 대하면 상대방도 그것에 상응한 행동 을 하게 됩니다. 베풀어 주세요. 그러면 반드시 돌아 옵니다” 라 는 말로 인터뷰를 마쳤다. 점점 각박해지고, 격렬해 지는 작금 의 시대에 많은 사람들이 여유를 잃고, 따뜻함이 사라져가고 있 다. 하지만 오사장과 같은 생각을 가진 사람들이 있기에 아직까 지 세상에 조금의 온기가 남아있지 않나 생각해 본다.

Therapy Trends The Biggest Lie Since No-Lye The evolution of relaxers has gone from sodium hydroxide lye to egg protein and mushroom actives. The market has tried to smooth-out fears of caustic chemicals with less aggressive hydroxides like calcium, potassium and lithium—all no-lye, yet all with pH levels ranging from nine to 14. The formulas have been improved with buffers and conditioning systems. Most have been improved to be less painful and less damaging. Modern day kits combine hydroxide formulations with milder chemicals like guanidine carbonate or thioglycolate. In previous iterations, these texturizing chemicals were attempts to replace hydroxides. Each relaxer system requires an aggressive maintenance system of conditioning and styling.

There is still dissatisfaction. Relaxers don’t last as long.

Heat is required to keep the fresh relaxed look. Breakage, receding hair lines and thinning hair contributes to the chronic disappointment. Yet despite warnings, relaxer kits are the driving force of the OTC business.

Although pH balances are not indicated on relaxer kits, consumers know that anything over seven is dangerous. Alternative chemistries promise safety. But many continue to lie: egg proteins and mushroom actives are neutralized with guanidine. Alkaline water is not an active. The new thermal reconditioning systems present an opportunity to redefine the relaxer category. Keratin systems can restore and enhance over processed hair.

Once the negative press is resolved, consumers can expect to relax from relaxers for up to four months. Consumers will continue to explore, read labels and remain skeptical.

They will continue to buy relaxers and all the necessary maintenance items. So relax!

전 세계적으로 각종 만성 질환 환자가 늘어 나고 있는 가운데, 아몬드가 포함된 식단이 심혈관 질환뿐 아니라 제2형 당뇨병 예방 과 치료에 도움이 될 수 있다는 연구결과가 발표됐다. 미국 로마린다 대학(Loma Linda University)의 미셸 위엔(Michelle Wien) 박 사 연구팀은 50대 성인 남녀 65명을 대상 으로 총 16주 동안 아몬드가 포함된 식단 과 일반적인 식사를 제공한 후 인슐린 민감 성 및 LDL 콜레스테롤 수치를 측정했다. 연 구팀은 각각의 그룹을 관찰한 결과, 아몬드 를 섭취한 그룹의 경우 심혈관 질환과 제2 형 당뇨병의 위험 요인인 LDL 콜레스테롤 수치는 감소된 반면, 인슐린 민감성(insulin sensitivity)은 증가됐다고 밝혔다. 일반적 으로 인슐린 민감성이 높아지면 체내 인슐 린 분비가 늘어나 혈당 수치를 정상적으로 유지할 수 있다. 미국영양협회지(Journal of the American College of Nutrition)에 발표된 이번 연구는 제2형 당뇨병이나 심

음주에 관한 속설들 술에 대한 속설은 무궁무진 하지만, 우리가 알고 있는 사실들이 전혀 근거가 없는 경우 가 허다하다. 다음에 술에 관한 몇 가지 속설 들을 정리해 봤다.

- 맥주를 많이 마시면 배가 나온다 = 이 는 사실과 거리가 멀다. 맥주 한 캔의 열량은 95에서 약 300 칼로리에 이르기까지 매우 다 양하다. 맥주를 많이 마셔 배가 나온다고 느 끼는 사람이라면 체코인일 수 있다. 체코인 의 1인당 맥주 소비량은 다른 나라 사람들보 다 월등히 많다. 그럼에도 한 연구진은 체코 인 2천명 가량을 상대로 조사해 2003년 발표 한 연구결과를 통해 맥주 소비량과 허리둘레 증가간에 아무런 연관성을 찾을 수 없었다고 밝혔다.

- 커피를 마시면 술에서 더 빨리 깰 수 있다 = 사실이 아니다. 커피속 카페인은 음 주자를 더 빨리 정신 들게 할 수 있으나 음 주자의 혈액내 알코올 농도를 끌어 내리지 는 못한다. 미국 필라델피아 템플대의 토머 스 굴 교수에 따르면 커피 한잔은 음주자에 게 취했다는 사실을 깨닫게 하는 것을 더욱 어렵게 할 수 있다는 것. 연구진은 쥐를 상대 로 실험한 결과를 2009년 학술지에 발표했 다. 논문은 쥐가 카페인 때문에 더 빨리 정신 을 차릴 수 있었으나 알코올에 의해 야기된 인지적 장애는 전혀 되돌리지 못했다고 결론 을 지었다. 쥐에게 커피 한잔은 인간에겐 커 피 8잔에 해당한다.

- 샴페인은 와인보다 더 취하게 한다 = 이는 사실에 가깝다. 2003년의 한 연구결과 에 따르면 샴페인 거품이 샘창자와 경계를 이루는 부분인 위의 유문(幽門) 판막을 열어 알코올이 흘러들게 해 혈액흐름을 더 빠르게 할 수 있기 때문이다. 하지만 샴페인 거품의 이 같은 역할이 왜 그런지는 수수께기다. 또 샴페인처럼 거품을 내는 술이 위내벽을 자극 함으로써 알코올 흡수율을 높일 수 있다.

- 맥주를 마신 뒤 독주를 마시면 속이 상 대적으로 편하다 = 이 역시 사실과 다르다. 보스턴대 연구진에 따르면 맥주와 독주 사이 에는 음주자가 음주 다음날 특별히 속이 좋 지 않도록 느끼게 하는 어떠한 화학적 상호 작용도 없다. 음주 다음날 느낌을 좌우하는 것은 마신 술의 전체량이다. 아마도 음주가 가 맥주 여러 잔을 마신 뒤에는 자제력이 적 어져 독주를 더 많이, 더 빨리 마실 수는 있 을 것이다.

- 숙취 제거 방법은 많다 = 틀린 말이 다. 인디애나대 연구진은 2008년 발표한 연 구결과에서 사람들이 숙취를 없애려고 바나 나나 아스피린, 과당, 포도당, 돼지감자, 선 인장 등에 의존하지만 이런 것들이 숙취를 없애거나 예방한다는 아무런 과학적 증거를 찾지 못했다고 밝혔다. 연구진은 음주 동안 또는 그 이후 잠을 제대로 못 자든지, 담배를 피우든지, 과식을 하든지, 코를 골든지 하는 행위가 숙취의 효과적 처치를 어렵게 하는 한 요인일 수 있다고 덧붙였다.

쉽게 생기는 멍, 큰 병일 수 있다?

멍은 혈관 안에 있어야 할 적혈구가 어떠한 이유로 인해 혈관 밖으로 나온 상태를 말한 다. 멍이라고 하면 시퍼런 색만을 생각하지 만 실제로는 적혈구가 혈관 밖으로 나온 것 이기 때문에 처음에는 선홍색 반점 형태를 띤다. 혈관 밖으로 나온 적혈구는 피부조직 안에서 점차 파괴되는 과정을 겪게 되면서 상처 부위가 파란색, 보라색, 갈색 등으로 변하게 된다. 상처 부위가 보라색을 지나 갈색으로 변할 때쯤이면 적혈구 파괴 과정 이 완료되는 단계로 이때는 통증을 느끼지 않게 된다. 멍이 생기는 원인으로는 타박상 에 따른 것이 가장 많지만 다른 원인으로도 나타날 수 있다. 유난히 사소한 자극에도 멍이 잘 드는 사람 은 다른 질환이 있는 것은 아닌지 의심해 봐 야 한다. 혈소판 수가 감소하거나 그 수는 정상이지만 기능이 불량할 때 멍이 들 수 있

다. 혈소판은 우리 몸에서 혈액 응고나 지혈 작용을 담당하는 기능을 하는데 숫자가 줄 어들거나 기능이 떨어지면 사소한 자극에 도 멍이 잘 들게 된다. 이때 생기는 질환이 백혈병, 특발성 혈소판감소증 등이다. 또한 간 기능이 크게 저하된 환자에게서도 멍이 잘 발생한다. 급성 간염처럼 일시적으로 간 기능이 저하된 사람에게는 거의 나타나지 않지만 간경변처럼 간이 많이 손상된 만성 간 질환자에게서 쉽게 관찰된다. 만성 간 질 환자에게 멍이 나타나는 것은 우리 몸의 지 혈작용을 혈소판에서 주로 담당하지만 간 에서 생산되는 응고인자도 지혈에 중요한 역할을 하기 때문이다. 만약 간 기능이 심 하게 저하되면 간에서 합성되는 응고 인자 가 만들어지지 못해 결국 출혈로 이어져 멍 이 발생하는 것이다.

마라톤 완주하면 뼈 근 육 세포노화 일시 중단 마라톤은 인간의 체력한계에 도전하는 격 렬한 운동이다. 이러한 마라톤을 완주하 는 등 격렬한 운동을 하면 인체에서 일어 나는 세포의 죽음이 일시적으로 멈춤으로 써 건강과 젊음이 유지된다는 연구결과가 나왔다. 이탈리아 로마대학교 가브리엘라 마르페 교수팀은 아마추어 마라토너 10명 에게 26마일 (풀코스 42.195㎞)을 달리게 한 후 그들의 혈액 샘플을 채취했다. 이들 과 비교하기 위해 마라톤 풀코스 완주와 같 이 체력을 소진하는 운동을 하지 않은 6명 의 혈액도 함께 채취해 조사했다. 그 결과

풀코스를 완주한 10명은 몸에서 자연스럽 게 일어나는 혈액 속 세포의 예정사 과정 이 일시적으로 멈추었다. 즉, 인체의 자연 스런 노화과정이 일시 중단된 것과 유사한 상황이 일어난 것. 마르페 박사는 “사람의 몸에서 자연스럽게 일어나는 ‘세포예정사 (Programmed cell-death, PCD)’라는 과 정은 마라톤처럼 격렬한 운동을 할 때 잠 시 중단되는 등 변화를 보인다”며 “이런 효 과가 사람의 골격과 심장근육 조직을 건강 하게 유지하는데 도움을 주는 것같다”고 말 했다. 세포예정사란 세포가 내부 또는 외부 의 신호에 반응하여 세포의 성장 및 분열 활 동을 중단하고 스스로 사멸하는 과정을 말 한다. 한편, 세포예정사가 제대로 작동하지
