Stroll through Colmar's vast pedestrianized zone, a listed "protected sector", enjoy its rich perfectly preserved religious and secular heritage, taking you from the Middle Ages to the 18th century: from "Little Venice" which has become the "must" venue for photographers the world over, to the Tanners district recognisable by its grand white-fronted houses.

The KoĂŻfhus
To round off your discovery, try a flat-bottomed boat ride, the traditional means of transport for local market gardeners. You will learn more about the activities carried on in the famous "Little Venice" district and the Fishermens Quay. For a general tour of the city you can hop on the "Petit Train" that takes you past Colmar's unusual train station, courthouse, and water tower. For a fun family tour, ask for the "Cigo-Tour" or just follow the tourism guide, both available from the Tourist Office.

The Isenheim Altarpiece
A symbol of renewed ambition, the contemporary wing of Unterlinden Museum designed by Herzog & De Meuron is the new showcase for a collection of modern art representing the major artists of the 20th century such as Dubuffet, Picasso, De StaĂŤl, Soulages and Dix. It also exhibits temporary collections. An extensive collection of Rhine art is displayed in the 13th century convent, the Isenheim Altarpiece being its masterpiece displayed in its chapel. The tour spans some 7,000 years of history, from prehistoric times to the 20th century.

A new cultural venue will see light of day in 2019, dedicated to spreading understanding of the written word and pictures. It will feature exceptional collections dating from the Middle Ages to today, which Colmar has inherited.

Drop into the Bartholdi museum, in the home town of the father of the Statue of Liberty lighting the world and discover the many works throughout the town centre. The toy museum has 19th and 20th century collections including puppets,mechanical toys and electric trains that will take adults back to their childhood and will enchant kids. Get lost among the local fauna in the natural history and ethnolographical museum and discover the hectic life of Jean-Jacques Waltz at the Hansi museum which houses a large collection of the famous illustrator's work.
The Dominicans of Colmar will be a heritage site listed as a Historical Monument, a library, a place for preserving and presenting a collection of some of the oldest and most precious Rhinish works, a museum using the latest technology, a venue for temporary exhibitions, and a European centre for study and research.
