Despite Swindles & Scams, The Fuel Additives Market is Poised for Growth

he specialty fuels market is projected to rise to $1.2 billion in 2012. Of this, diesel fuel additives are expected to grow the fastest with consumption rates peaking at 750 million pounds. The demand is driven by the needs of more complex engines and the wishes of consumers to reduce fuel consumption and increase durability. Fuel additive promoters make many promises about their products, ranging from excellent cold-start performance, optimum lubricity, cleaning properties and fuel savings. Some, predictably, are more truthful than others. Gas-saving products are especially popular when fuel prices spike as consumers look for ways to improve fuel efficiency. Some industry watchdogs advise that there are practical steps to increasing gas mileage. Staying within posted speed limits, using cruise control, avoiding unnecessary idling, keeping properly inflated tires, and regularly changing oil and filters are practical steps to conserving fuel. Gas fuel additives, however, are not deemed to be viable. The U.S. Federal trade Commission warns consumers to be wary of promises of huge savings made by the manufacturers of gas-saving additives. It discounts claims by advertisers which boast up to 25 percent in fuel savings, citing Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) results which show that of more than 100 gas-saving devices tested, none sig-

nificantly improve mileage. Glowing testimonials about such products by satisfied customers fail to mention contributing conditions that increase savings, such as road and weather conditions, good driving behaviour, easy traffic flows, and possible tune-ups. Fuel additives for diesel engines, on the other hand, do address problems resulting from the use of diesel fuels. “Diesel detergents do have a definite purpose. They lubricate injector pumps and help diesel flow in cold temperatures when the fuel waxes up in the filter and stops the fuel from flowing,” says Steve Reise, a Sudbury mechanic. In a diesel market that benefits from additives, there are still complaints. These rise from disreputable brands which fall into at least one of three categories. Some brands have no active ingredients, some have alcohol as the active ingredient which gives a short-lived boost to combustion but quickly wears off and deteriorates seals and gaskets. Still others have light engine oil as the active ingredient. The deceiving smooth sound of the engine can destroy injector tips, and the repeated use of these additives lowers energy content and horsepower. The many shortfalls are countered with clear advantages. “There are a number of companies on the market which do not make flamboyant claims of 20 per cent savings on fuel efficiency,” says Chris Miller, referring to the disreputable companies that tarnish the entire industry with exaggerated promises of inflated savings. “For the most part,” he continues, “additives are well received in the marketplace, and those who use them understand the bene-

fits they provide.” Miller is vice-president of the New York-based EZoil, a leader in the diesel additives industry which began operations 30 years ago when additives were largely unknown. For fleet owners seeking assurance that additives do what they claim, Miller advises requesting a certificate of analysis on the fuel additive conducted by an independent lab. His advice is shared with others in the industry. Scott Deslippe, a distributor of Pro-Ma Performance Products, also advises users to do their research, especially about fuel savings. Some products do improve fuel economy, he notes, but most are limited to addressing other problems. “A lot of products are taking moisture out of the fuel or adding lubricity,” he says, adding that Pro-Ma Performance does sell additives with a combustion modifier that increases fuel economy. According to the American National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM), two of five properties are needed to set the standard for premium diesel. Refiners and distributors do use additives in their bulk fuel supplies, but as each batch of refined diesel varies, the addition of more additives by the end user is necessary to even out the variances in each fuel stock. The five properties of diesel fuel are energy content, cetane number, low or cold temperature operability, thermal stability and fuel injector cleanliness. Any of these two constitutes a premium fuel. These minimum standards, however, may not be sufficient to guarantee the smooth operation of an engine. Indeed, only one of the 34 brands of premium fuel claims to meet all five NCWM requirements; 33 of 34

admit to falling short on one to four of the essential properties, and another study of 64 premium fuels showed none meeting all five standards. In addition, as diesel engine technology grows more complex and tighter emission standards are introduced, the use of fuel additives, also known as detergents, grows in order to ensure the uninterrupted, smooth flow of an engine under variable conditions. Refiners and distributors, moreover, do not use sufficient quantities or types of additives. This calls for a proactive stance on the part of drivers. For example, a commonly used and inexpensive additive is a water remover. Water is ubiquitous and can enter fuel at any stage of the process from the refinery to the truck’s fuel storage tank. Bottled additives are necessary to eliminate condensation which, if left unchecked, can block fuel lines. Good energy content, one of the five properties that make a premium grade diesel, translates into better mileage. Consumers are advised to search for a premium fuel that does not have kerosene, which is responsible

for the dilution of fuel. Additives can help to ensure that the remaining properties are more consistent. High cetane levels account for improvements to starting and idling engines as well as faster warm-ups and less smoke in cold temperatures. They will also raise the cetane count in sub-standard fuels. Low or Cold Temperature Operability enables engines to function normally in cold temperatures. Gelling is always a risk when temperatures dip below the specifications indicated for the fuel – usually around -25 degrees. A number of diesel supplements contain effective anti-gel additives. Experts advise that water-removing additives should be used first since ice forms quicker than fuel gels. If anti-gel additives are not used in frigid temperatures and fuel lines clog, there are products which will un-gel fuel in lines and in filters. Thermal stability counters the loss of performance caused by tiny particles that accumulate in filters and injectors as fuel circulates from the tank to the engine. The consequences are dimin-

ished power, fuel loss and reduced mileage. Dirty injectors can be prevented by water-removing and thermal-stabilizing additives. Another property that some governing bodies insist must be present in premium fuels is the lubricating value of diesel, also known as lubricity. Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) contains significantly less lubricity than Low Sulfur Diesel and tends to absorb water. The result is damage to metal components in the engine fuel system. A number of additives do contain lubricity enhancers. Many detergents are available which address problems in each of the five property categories. High performance fuel additives may, for example, provide excellent cold start performance, increase cetane counts, improve fuel combustion, add lubricity and fuel economy. Nonetheless, it’s still advisable to check brand reputation to confirm the additives contain the active ingredients they claim to, and consult with an informed dealer about the specific treatment applications of each.

ecause of our British heritage, the Canadian political system has been peppered with imperialistic values. Once elected into office, the ruling “aristocracy” believes they own the country’s resources. Imperialists believe they have the right to create laws that primarily benefit themselves at the expense of everyone else. They abhor transparency and only give “lip service” to the public for re-election purposes. Canadian taxpayers have made many changes in the last couple decades. The grassroots rise of the reform party squeezed even the Liberal Paul Martin to balance the federal budget in 1997-1998 (the first in over 30 years). Then came the sponsorship scandal that further rocked the party, first into a minority and then into opposition. Canadians voted against corruption and the wasteful abuse of power with public money. Citizens have learned to walk softly and carry a big voting stick. There is no political party, federal or provincial, that is immune from public scrutiny. This entitlement attitude is slowly being squeezed out. People and companies who bankroll special interest groups, who bankroll political offices, are being exposed. Just because lobbying is legal doesn’t make it a sound method of governing our country’s resources and industries. It ultimately means that “he who has the cash writes the laws and… makes more cash”. If it suits them, lobbyists simply take less than

half truths and publicly spin them into outright contradictions of facts. Industry manipulation through special interest groups has become a well funded business. Without oversight they can legislate competition, or society, out of existence… all with taxpayer’s money. Bill 41, the speed limiter law, is just another example of this abuse of p o w e r. Vo i d o f true science and transparency a small group of heavy handed companies, through the Ontario Trucking Association forced their bill into law. Now, fueled by the

MTO budget (your hard earned Ontario taxes) a handful of companies incarcerate the freedom of an entire industry. Legislatively restricting access in a competitive environ-

ment is NEVER good for the customer or society. Corrupt entitlement mindsets breed lazy and inefficient service providers. Operators don’t oppose the limiters because they are personal speed mongers but because

they are business people who value their freedom of choice. Personal freedom is being legislated into oblivion. The trucking industry is so burdened by complex rules and restrictions it is becoming increasingly difficult to operate a legal enterprise under most circumstances. The rules so vast, the interpretations so vague that even experienced veterans know that if someone really wants to shut you down, they can! Rules and restrictions are no longer designed for public safety but for political and private gain. The Canadian taxpayer

Although there are differences in insurance from province to province, dialogue is exchanged between insurers with ease. Lions Gate Trailers & Provincial Trailer Rentals Purchase GE Trailer Fleet Services

arch 18, 2010 – As part of their Canadian expansion, Vancouver based Lions Gate Trailers (LGT) and Mississauga based Provincial Trailer Rentals (PTR) has finalized the strategic purchase of GE Trailer Fleet Services, formerly known as TIP, a division of GE Capital. Effective March 18, 2010, LGT will operate the GE Trailer Fleet Services facilities in Winnipeg and integrate the balance of the six GE Trailer Fleet Services facilities into their existing Canadian network. A good percentage of the existing GE Trailer Fleet Services’ technicians will be employed by LGT/PTR. This purchase will expand the LGT/PTR trailer fleet to over 20,000

Cleaner Air Means Longer Life

re you ready for some good news for a change? (Is it just me or does it seem that unless you’re reporting bad news it’s not seen as serious journalism?). Clean air policies are starting to have an impact and as far as I can see this is only the tip of the iceberg. In the last few years environmental issues have moved from the background to the forefront for many industries and while we have a long way to go it looks like we have made some progress. And the best is yet to come if we all work together to cut toxic emissions. According to a new s t u d y published by the New England Journal of Medicine, efforts to cut air pollution in the past few decades have helped increase life expectancy in the general population. The report, which was published January 22, 2009, gives the most comprehensive evidence

to date that shows air quality improvements can have a measurable effect on health. The research group discovered that on average, reductions in fine particulate air pollution in the past few decades increased life expectancy by about five months for those living in 51 U.S. cities that researchers included in the study. “This tells us that continued efforts to improve air quality – even in only moderately-polluted cities – should result in improved life expectancy,” said lead author Arden Pope. Much of the fine particulate matter in the air we breathe comes from industrial activities and burning fossil fuels. “The evidence clearly suggests that the reason we’re seeing increases in life expectancy is

b e cause w e have a reduction in an important risk factor, in this case air pollution, to cardiopulmonary disease generally,” said Dr. Pope, who is a professor at Brigham Young University in Utah. Fine particulate air pollution is associated with an increased risk of various health issues, ranging from breathing problems

to decreased lung function and heart attacks. Research has suggested that long-term exposure to fine particulate matter can dramatically increase the risk of dying from heart disease or stroke. Five easy ways you can be a part of the clean air solution: It might feel that our own small contributions don’t count for much. But we don’t live in isolation. Our actions are an example to others – both negative and positive. Your single action is magnified by the example it sets for others to follow. And it’s no different when you consider how you manage your fuel. Automated systems are available today that help you understand exactly w h a t y o u r f u e l consumption needs are and where fuel is being wasted. When you cut consumption, you cut toxic emissions. Here is what you can do: Adopt new eco-friendly refueling practices. You can easily save 10 to 15% of the fuel you consume if you have your fuel delivered rather than driving to card-locks or storage tanks to fill up. And with that an equal amount of emissions are eliminated. When you calculate those numbers based on the size of your fleet over a period of months, the reduction in Greenhouse Gases is

staggering. Improve fuel efficiency by smarter driving habits. Poor driving habits waste fuel. Excessive idling and jack-rabbit starts are the two biggest culprits. Preplanning routes will cut unnecessary miles and save fuel too. Set up a Training and Rewards Program for your drivers. Make everyone aware of how they can cut GHGs by practicing ecofriendly driving habits. Reward performance with a “Green Driving Award” monthly. Measure it and Reduce it! Fuel Management Systems can give you accurate data on each truck and piece of equipment to help you cut fuel and emissions. And it is delivered by e-mail! Once you know where fuel is being wasted you can manage it better, cutting costs, consumption and emissions. Use cleaner, greener

And what about other environmental risks? Fuel is often looked at as a “dirty business.” It’s tough to erase images of the epic oil spills from our minds and we are afraid of causing even the smallest fuel spills, which can stain the environment and bring costly clean up bills. Can’t Get a Job Because of CVOR Issues

often receive calls from frustrated truck drivers that tell me they are having difficulty getting employment because of issues on their CVOR abstract. Often this is a result of bending the rules or simply paying traffic tickets with the mistaken belief that they will not have a negative impact on employability. This is a common mistake that can have devastating results. The employability of a driver is often governed by their insurance carrier. As you know, insurance companies are very concerned with anything they

perceive as a risk. If the insurance carrier views a driver’s record and subsequently views that driver as a risk, they may increase the premiums of the employer. The insurance carrier may also decide that a driver is too much of a risk to insure. In this instance the employer is usually left with no choice but to terminate the driver. The driver is then forced to seek employment elsewhere and given that the first thing a potential employer will require is a recent CVOR abstract, the potential employer is then in the same position as the previous employer, and even if they are anxious to hire the driver, they may be prevented from doing so by their insurance carrier. The driver is now forced to seek employment in another field. Drivers need to be aware that almost everything they do in a commercial

vehicle is recorded. For example whenever you are inspected by an MTO officer and the officer hands you a commercial vehicle inspection report, that report will be reflected on your abstract. If the vehicle was placed out of service as a result of that inspection, this will also be reflected on your abstract. If you are involved in a

collision in a commercial vehicle, you can also expect to see this on your abstract. Just for those who think that simply falsifying their log book will keep them out of trouble, all of these documents that are produced from inspections and collisions etc, are available as time markers for MTO. For example, if

you state in your log book that you are in Alberta at 10:00 AM on a given day and you were inspected by MTO in Sudbury at 6:00 AM that day, this is where the evidence is provided to charge you with falsifying a daily log. Drivers must be very careful that they deal effectively with incidents in a commercial vehicle. If

you are charged for an offence, it is prudent to seek legal advice before simply paying the fine, even if the offence seems minor. Your employer’s insurance carrier may view the offence differently and you could find yourself looking for a job. Savings Found In Control & Ownership of Benefits

onverting contracts for 24 Hour Loss of Income coverage also known as alternatives to WSIB can cost you more than a $10 savings. It can cost you weeks or months of earnings, loss of your business and/ or legal fees to recover your lost earnings. It may further violate your level of control, ownership or personal information. Before deciding to make that transition to a new contract based on costing, be sure to confirm in writing the so called savings by reviewing that small print. A $10 savings may represent sacrificing waiting periods for pre-existing conditions; a condition as a result of an accident or illness that you may have sought treatment and/or was diagnosed by a doctor at a hospital, medical facility or clinic. Even if not found in medical records, diagnostic equipment like

x-rays, MRIâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s may reveal that the injury was present prior to applying for the insurance. It may represent a longer waiting period to have premiums payable in the event of a disability or even an overall maximum built in to the contract also known as an aggregate limit. Commonly you will find that contracts sold in trucking will cover your pre-existing conditions once you have satisfied a waiting period, generally 12 or 24 months. Replacing this contract may mean that you must satisfy a waiting period once again. Accident only contracts are generally NEVER underwritten by the insurance company until you have a claim. At this time, your only opportunity to recover your earnings is to seek legal counsel. If you choose to replace your contract be sure to get confirmation of coverage by the agent or broker who sold the coverage in writing from their office and/ or the insurance company that it is being fully underwritten, no new waiting period is to be satisfied or that your pre-existing condition will be covered.

Insurance agents, brokers replacing a contract for insurance that offers less coverage may be subject to disciplinary measures by the Ontario Insurance Commission. The economic impact on transportation has many re-evaluating suppliers. Loss of Income coverage protecting your earnings in the event of injury or

illness is a necessity versus a luxury considering the absence of any type of social program by the government to meet your loss of income needs. To potentially avoid getting caught up in the costing war, re-evaluate your needs. The savings in contracts may be found without sacrificing the integrity of your contract

Jowin Express & Arctic BREEZE Truck AC Systems

olumbia, MS, March 2010 - Edwin Johnson values simplicity, especially when he can put a dollar value on it. As the owner and President of Jowin Express Inc., a flatbed carrier based in Columbia, Mississippi, he is always looking for a way to cool down operating costs and he found that in the new Arctic BREEZE Truck AC system the company recently began installing in 13 of its trucks.“ Nothing else here generates a savings like that,” says Johnson who calculates that the battery powered 12V/DC air cooling system is saving the company $520 per month per unit, for a total savings of $6,240 a year. The company was searching for a way to cut costs. Johnson knew the Holmes Company, based in Jackson, Mississippi,

had adopted the Arctic BREEZE Truck AC system for its own fleet and the owner, Martin Holmes, was recommending the system without hesitation. “We have a good relationship with Martin who was trying out several different types of AC units in his fleet so I was letting them be the guinea pigs,” Johnson says with a chuckle. Now the company is ordering more. “We started with one and it has done the job for us. All of our new trucks coming in now will have these units in them,” adds Johnson. “We appreciate our competitor for recommending this system to us and today we are passing on that recommendation to others.” System increases driver productivity Jowin Express started in 1982 with five trucks which has since grown to a fleet of 80. It specializes in hauling flatbed freight with commodity building materials such as lumber and steel. Johnson says what he likes about the

system is just how little it weighs. “I don’t like to add extra weight that costs me,” he says. As a long-haul fleet, company drivers mostly operate along the southeast to southwest and into central parts of the Unites States. Much of their time is spent in hot, humid conditions where driver comfort is a major issue during scheduled periods of down-time. “It was important for us to figure out how to keep our drivers cool overnight in a truck or just waiting on a load,” he adds. Keeping drivers comfortable and helping them get the rest they need during their 10 hours of downtime ensures they are sharp for the next day’s haul which is a contributing safety factor. Knowing exactly how much idle time each rig accumulates, and how much that cost the company, made the Arctic BREEZE Truck AC even more appealing. “It certainly reduced idle time and the fuel we were burning during that time,” says Johnson. “It’s easy to put a dollar figure on fuel. Every hour that truck idles burns a gallon of fuel. At $2.63 per gallon, it doesn’t take much to figure out what that means. Basically we are saving about $26.50 per day,” explains Johnson, adding that he expects the unit will pay for itself in less than 18 months. Time for Canada to Take Compliancy Programs Seriously

e all knew there would be changes with the new U.S. Government Administration. Have we paid attention to what this means to our Canadian Businesses? U.S. President Barack Obama has a mission to bring business back

to the U.S.A. This affects us with our U.S./Canada Trade market. The borders security has been beefed up tremendously with not only enforcing compliancy programs but making these compliancy programs much more complex, demanding and difficult to gain approval and certification. The big “but” here is that if we want to continue to do business with the U.S., we have to comply with their programs. Here are the programs that I am referring to: C-TPAT, FAST U.S., FAST Cards, ACE, SFI, CSI, WHTI,

SCAC, IOR, DOT, Passports, travel documents, import/export regulations. We have on our Canadian side of the border the PIP, FAST Canada, FAST Cards and/or CDRP Cards, CSA, Canadian Bonded Carrier as well as Passports and travel documents. There was a time when becoming certified under these programs was fairly easy. Not any longer! I cannot stress to you how important compliancy with these programs is to your companies and to our border trade business. There are companies out there

who are taking a gouge out of our Canadian Transportation business; those to whom this has happened know what I am referring to. My answer is to know your compliancy programs, get enrolled and certified and advertise this fact. The restrictions on these programs, especially C-TPAT, leave only the trustworthy transportation and trucking companies to do honest business. Unfortunately there still are very trustworthy Canadian freight forwarders and freight brokers that no longer qualify for the C-TPAT program due to the drastically changed requirements. However, these companies can still be certified under our Canadian PIP, FAST and CSA programs. It is not

the goal of United States and Canadian Border Patrols to close Canadian companies down. Their goal is to heighten security. Our own Canadian CBSA is also doing same. I cannot stress enough that you need to get correct, confident advice when it comes to Customs and Border issues. Did you know that U.S. Customs & Border Protection has come out with the SBI net Northern Border Project (NBP)? They are deploying 16 Remote Video Surveillance Systems (RVSS) in the Buffalo and Detroit Sectors to provide coverage along the Niagara and St. Clair Rivers, each equipped with four remotely operated cameras two day and two night cameras that provide

24-hour, year-round capabilities. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2010. The U.S.A. takes security much more seriously than Canada does, although Canada is making great strides towards securing our country as well. I urge you again to take these matters seriously, protect yourself, your company and our country. I wish you much success for 2010. Mais à moins que les polices de santé et d’invalidité soient garanties médicalement et financièrement et qu’on ait reçu des explications complètes données. Certaines polices par un représentant honnête et bien informé, l’assuré risque d’avoir une mauvaise surprise. Voici un exemple typique. Un opérateur-propriétaire se plaint d’une douleur physique qu’il n’arrive pas à attribuer à une cause spécifique. La douleur persiste et il va consulter son médecin. Celui-ci lui fait une visite mais trouve qu’il s’agit d’un mal mineur. Après quatre-vingt-dix jours, le malade retourne chez son médecin. Toujours incapable de travailler, il fait une demande de prestations, pensant, à tort, qu’il a une assurance-invalidité. La compagnie d’assurance rejette sa demande parce que sa police ne couvre que les accidents liés au travail. Si le conducteur n’a pas de couverture pour accidents et maladie, il a le choix de retourner au travail ou de risquer de tout perdre. Les employeurs ont souvent de la difficulté à gérer l’assurance/maladie et invalidité, ce qui veut dire que beaucoup de transporteurs acceptent les polices uniquement accident que leurs opérateurs-propriétaires achètent, malheureusement, sans trop y penser. Mais méfiez-vous! Il y a des courtiers qui n’ont pas les qualifications nécessaires pour s’occuper de vos besoins d’assurance/ santé. Certains spécialistes distinguent entre des courtiers généralistes et ceux qui se sont spécialisés dans le secteur du transport. « Je ne suis pas cent pour cent à l’aise avec les courtiers qui n’ont pas les compétences requises pour acheter l’assurance pour les compagnies de transport. » déclare un représentant. a été déclarée volée de la rue en face de la résidence de son propriétaire située à Montréal. TransCore’s Canadian Loads Increased 56% in February

arch 17, 2010, To r o n t o , O n t a r i o – Tr a n sCore’s Canadian Freight Index based on Loadlink® freight matching data sees increase in year-over-year load volumes. Loadlink metrics for Canada indicate the daily average posting of loads has increased 56 percent in February 2010 versus Feb-

ruary 2009. Truck postings have decreased 10 percent for the same time frame, likely indicating that excess capacity is being trimmed or that carriers are filling up with freight from contract shipments. There has been an overall improvement in truck to load ratio of 42 percent YOY. Cross border loads posted have gone up by 63

percent in February 2010 over the same time last year, another possible sign of market improvement. These numbers reflect only actual load postings and do not include carrier truck searches which have also seen substantial increases. Claudia Milicevic, general manager of TransCore’s Link Logistics based in

Toronto, stated, “Trucking has seen one of the most challenging periods in the last year, but we are seeing substantial increases in load posting volumes and carrier searches.” TransCore established the largest freight-matching network in North America by merging both U.S.-based DAT Services and Canadian based Link

ith the spring season beginning, we find ourselves faced with having to drive on wet slippery roads more frequently as the snow melts away and the rain begins. While most of us use caution while driving on wet roads, many drivers treat it as regular driving conditions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), every year nearly one million vehicle accidents occur on wet road conditions. While it is impossible to completely eliminate the risk of driving on wet

roads, it is possible to reduce the factors that lead to such accidents. Here are some of the best safety tips available to reduce those risks. Slow down: It is better to drive slow and safe than fast and reckless. As you decrease your speed, your tires’ tread that contacts the road surface increases. If at all possible, avoid trying to pass other vehicles as this could cause a reaction or over reaction. Maintain a safe distance: You should not stay too close to the vehicle in front of you when the roads are wet. It takes about three times longer to brake on wet roads than it does on dry roads. Keep more than two vehicle lengths between you and the vehicle in front of you. Know how to recover from a skid: If your vehicle does skid, remember not to

system (ABS), do not pump the brakes. Instead, apply firm, steady pressure to the brakes and steer the vehicle in the direction of the skid. Properly maintain your tires: Improperly inflated tires not only adversely affect your gas mileage, they also affect your vehicle’s handling. Tires that are properly inflated and well maintained can cut through water and keep traction better than worn or bald tires. Check your tires’ condition and air pressure on a regular basis. Be careful at intersections: Accidents occur most frequently at intersections. When approaching an intersection, exercise caution during wet road conditions. Although you may be approaching slowly, other drivers around you may not be so

You can avoid aquaplaning by keeping your tires properly inflated, maintaining deep tire treads, slowing down

and driving on the tracks of the vehicle in front of you. As drivers, we all need to change our mindset and techniques when driving in wet road conditions. Wet roads lead to slipping, skidding and aquaplaning, all of which can cause vehicle damage, personal injury or even death. By taking a few precautions and by using wet road driving techniques, we can hopefully avoid ending up soaking wet on the shoulder of a highway waiting for a tow truck. Or, just

like many other safety tips, this safety tip could save our lives. Drive safe, think positive and be prosperous. e have heard this story over and over again with respect to enforcement issues and the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO). MTO does not have to prove their case in court with evidence unlike every other Canadian court proceeding where the government must have pictures, videos and/or physical evidence to prove their case. MTO must only have to state

their case. As a consequence, this has led to abuse of the system and has compromised our civil rights. Even a murderer appears to have more rights than truckers who travel in Ontario do. One of our members was charged with evading the scales while parked on the plate. MTO only dropped the charge after he waited all day in the court house for his case to be heard. How do you recoup the lost wages from a day

spent in court? To balance the scales of justice here are some suggestions. First, everyone should have a phone that can take pictures or a digital camera/video with them. Have a tape recorder rolling when you are stopped. Hit record and state both the date and time. Try to call the officer by name or badge number. YOU DON’T HAVE TO TELL THEM YOU ARE RECORDING THEM! In the majority of

states and provinces, the law requires a one-person notice. Therefore, only one person needs to know (yourself) that the conversation is being recorded thereby fulfilling your legal obligation. If you are forced to change any parts at a scale, keep the parts and have them checked by a licensed mechanic who is willing to later verify if the former parts were actually legal. And remember, take lots of pictures!

I believe with all my heart that we need MTO to police us, because I know as a company driver and former owner/operator that I have in the past pushed the limits and gotten away with it. There are others who are willing to put unsafe junk on our roads and don’t care about you or your family’s safety. MTO needs to change its mentality to stop thinking that it is us against them. Warnings should be given (when reasonable) instead

of fines. Drivers need a safe place where they can report bad companies without fear of retaliation. I believe that we could once again have mutual respect for one another. Until then, it is important to protect yourself with a proactive approach. Have a safe ride and a good trip. illions and millions of dollars are spent each week on advertising campaigns to give consumers the perception that bottled water comes from some pristine mountain spring or magical underground aquifer, assuring purity and quality. However, the fact is that bottled water is oftentimes little more than

just tap water in a bottle... sometimes worse! You see, the federal regulations that govern bottled water require it to be only as good as tap water, not better. There are no regulations or requirements that bottled water be any higher in quality than tap water, and according to some recent studies, it may often be of lower quality. The fact is that people pay from $1 to $4 a gallon for the perception of higher quality, when in fact the quality of bottled water is at best unknown! Over 90% of the cost of bottled water is in the bottle, lid and label. The bottled water indus-

try is full of deception and questionable ethics. Industry lobbyists successfully fight every year to keep bottled water companies from having to abide by even the minimal health standards set by the EPA for tap water. The FDA, which regulates bottled water, states “Companies that market bottled water as being safer than tap water are defrauding the public.” “Of particular note, FDA does not have the specific statutory authority to require bottlers to use certified laboratories for water quality tests or to report test results, even if violations of the standards are

Abrams President Prefers the Modest Route

ith the number of people viewing him as a hero and friend, he should be wearing a red cape. Abrams Towing President, Joey Gagne prefers the modest route. “When I was developing the business back in 1983, I was looking for a company name that came as close to the beginning of the phone book as possible,” said Joey. I didn’t want it to be too long, something that could fit on the side of a tow truck.” Since “Joey” didn’t come first in the phone book Abrams did. Twenty seven years later, Abrams Towing now tows 150,000 vehicles annually. The business primarily focuses on heavy-duty towing and recovery of commercial vehicles and roadside assistance. With winter being one of the busiest times of year, it’s fortunate that Abrams has 200 people working in 8 locations province-wide with 70 of the employees located at their Toronto office. Comprised of four yards and two buildings on five acres, the Toronto office makes up about 60 per cent of the company’s towing business. They also do all of the preventative maintenance of the fleet in their 8,000 square foot shop. His first brush with towing was as a three-yearold, when his father, Joe Gagne Sr., got out of the air force, bought a tow truck and started Satellite Towing out of downtown Toronto. My dad used to take me around in his truck and it got it in my blood and I couldn’t get it out. I’ve wanted to be a tow truck driver forever, as long as I can remember.” “It’s very satisfying to get to help people in a jam,” said Joey. “When you do a good job, people appreciate that.” In the mid-1970’s, Joe

Sr. decided to get out of the towing business and bought himself a body shop. His son, however, got his driver’s license as soon as he turned 16. He learned the trade “hands on” and at the first opportunity, Joey went into the towing business for himself at age 19. With little money of his own, his now mother-inlaw co-signed a loan for $2,500 in 1983. This was enough for him to buy his own truck and pay for insurance. “I just went by the seat of my pants,” he said. “I got a phone hooked up, told people that I was in business, slowly but surely, people started calling.” A year later in 1984, he had picked up some small accounts and a wrecking yard. With the money he made, he expanded to three tow trucks in 1985. Abrams got its first contract with the CAA two years later, which helped the business to expand to five trucks. By 1989, he had ten trucks and a lot of auto club work. When car manufacturers came out with roadside assistance programs, Abrams, saw this as a golden opportunity. “I was in the right place at the right time, and it helped me to grow my business even more,” he said. In 1993, Abrams began expanding their services to include heavy duty towing. From there, they started going after bigger contracts with the police and the Ministry of Transportation. Since 1995, Abrams has been the exclusive towing company for Pearson Airport. That year, they purchased another towing location in Mississauga. A year later, driver Frank Giddings started a Windsor location through our roadside assistance customers. “We get a lot of spin-off contracts from the business that we do in the

head office. People are confident in the quality of work that we do, and that allows us more opportunities to develop other locations,” he said. When Abrams acquired a contract with the Toronto Police in 1997, it helped the company to further expand. They also secured a coveted contract with the TTC. The police contract comprises about 10 per cent of their business, it’s not unusual for them to have more than 600 vehicles in their lots at one time and the unclaimed vehicles are auctioned off to the public. In the footsteps of Giddings, driver Michael Labelle approached Joey about opening a new location in Newmarket in 1999. Richard Brown also helped to open another location in Hamilton in 2000. As a member of the Ontario Trucking Association, the Toronto Trucking Association and the ATSSA, the business has developed mostly into a fleet and contract business with the growth of business primarily in the heavy-duty towing area. Abrams has some of the most highly trained heavy-duty towing and recovery specialists. All of the drivers are certified by the Wreckmaster Towing and Recovery School out of Fayetteville, N.C. “Abrams has a very highly trained staff,” Joey said. “We do a lot of extra training outside of the company with TRAA and Wreckmaster. We are very committed to providing professional customer service.” The company does about 50 heavy-duty tows a day and about 50 big recovery jobs annually. Of the 400 to 500 total calls a day, about 20 of them are accidents. “You see a lot gruesome things, and that’s the hardest part of the job, dealing

with the human part of the accident. When someone dies, you try to block it out of your mind.” According to Joey, many tow truck drivers are also killed in the line of duty. “You try not to dwell on it, and focus on what needs to be done. Fortunately, accidents are only a tiny portion of the business. “The biggest part of this job is helping people,” said Joey. “Nobody’s ever happy to see a tow truck but when the tow truck driver saves their bacon from being stranded on side of the road, they’re relieved. That’s what draws me most to the business.” “When I first started my business, I envisioned having a large fleet of trucks and having a successful business,” Joey said. “I never imagined that I would be doing heavy duty towing to have my business expand as large as it has, or that we would be towing for as many different clientele as we do.” Goals for the future include expanding the business down the 401 corridor towards Windsor to include the London and Cambridge markets. “We’re thinking of opening a couple more locations in the next few years, but we’re not working on anything right now,” he said. It takes a few years to get a location developed and to get it growing. We’re focusing a lot more on the heavy towing. We’re hoping to have 40 heavies within the next five years (they currently have 14 trucks).” As for other services, Joey doesn’t anticipate offering anything else. “We’re going to stick with what works for us,” he said. “I don’t want to compete with our customers in the garages and the body shops. This is what we know and what we’re successful at.” “Shamelessly promote your business as much

as you can,” he said. “You can never promote your business enough. You have to put yourself out there as much as possible. You know you’re going to be rejected. It’s a part of business. If you take enough shots at it, you’ll have enough successes so that your business can thrive.” If he could have done anything differently, he would have started into the heavy-duty towing sooner. Although Joey travels to all of his locations on a regular basis for the purposes of quality control and to promote business to area clientele, he inevitably does some driving if the location happens to be short- staffed. “I find that people are more receptive to you when you’re willing to get your hands dirty and you ride up in a tow truck than if you’re a slicked-back salesman in suit and tie,” Joey said. Although Joey is the first to admit that he’s not a mechanic, he said that he was a very good tow truck driver back in the early days.

For the most part, he focuses on promoting his business, securing new contracts and handling the day-to-day operations, but when called upon, he can do it all. “I can drive tow truck and flatbed and I used to do a lot of dispatching and sales,” he said. I’m very hands-on with dispatching, answering phones, and I’m out in the yard moving cars and hiring new staff.” But as a family man, he makes time for Stephanie, his wife of 21 years, and his two children. “I try to keep family separated from business as much as possible,” Joey said. “When I go home, I spend time with them.” Although he never went to university, Joey thinks he did pretty well, considering. I enjoy being in my own business, but not everyone likes it. “As a child, I knew early on what I wanted to do and I never really veered from that. I’m happy with my decisions and with my chosen field,” he said. “I can’t imagine ever doing anything else.”
