Robust Sales & Move Toward Electric Engines Dominate Market

S

o far this year the trucking industry has benefitted from a resurgent demand for new big rigs, evidenced by rising sales figures not seen for 20 years. It’s not all good news of course, as the need for new orders outstrips manufacturers’ ability to deliver within normally expected time frames. Kenworth, by way of example, has told customers they have to wait 60 weeks for delivery of their recently introduced W990 models. Higher shipping rates and surging freight demand are bright lights for the industry, though dimmed somewhat from the driver shortage that continues unabated. Despite the overall buoyant mood, or maybe because of it, manufacturers continue to set their sights on the future – a future that includes the integration of electric heavy duty and regional haul engines. Most major engine makers in North America are looking toward electric engines for trucks and buses, a move prompted in no small part by tougher environmental standards. And there’s also compelling business reasons for launching into the electrification market. To begin with many municipalities have bylaws restricting the movement of noisier diesels during evening and early morning hours. Longer working hours would lighten traffic congestion during peak business hours. The much quieter electric engines can move along city streets without hardly being noticed. Electrics are by far much more energy efficient than their combustion engine counterparts, are emissions free, and promote a good corporate image to clients who see their Carrier transitioning to Green alternatives. For regional applications Volvo introduced, this year, its first allelectric truck for commercial use – the Volvo FL. Volvo has invested considerably in the technology used for propulsion and energy storage. “From experience we know how important it is that cities, energy suppliers and vehicle manufacturers cooperate in order for large-scale electrification to become a reality. With attractive incentives, agreed standards and a long-term strategy for urban planning and expansion of the charging infrastructure, the process can go

much faster,” explained company spokesperson Jonas Odermalm. Critics are likely to ask about performance. How does the electric truck measure up to its diesel counterpart? Quite well by all accounts. The FL, for example, produces up to 248 horsepower and 313 lb. ft. of torque, and has a GVW of over 35,000 pounds. It takes one and a half hours to fully charge the DC batteries. Volvo says the perception in noise reduction is about half of what diesel engines produce. The FL’s range is up to 300 kms. Thus far electric powered engines are best suited to medium duty trucks within specific delivery areas that return to the same station each night for recharging. At this point in the evolution cycle they are ill equipped to handle the heavy cargo weights for the Class 8 market with engines that run for one million miles or more. Navistar hopes to have an electric medium duty truck on the market by 2019. As with other truck makers Navistar will target the medium duty market based on reasons cited above – proximity to recharging stations at end of day, operating in primarily urban areas with higher concentrations of poor air quality, and shorter distances. However, that is not to say that electric engines will not be the order of the day for long haul applications in the future. Thus far Tesla has been the forerunner in this endeavour, hoping to introduce to market the Tesla Electric Semi in 2019. According to the company the new Electric Tesla can accelerate from 0 to 60 seconds in just 5 seconds, compared to an empty diesel that takes 20 seconds to reach the same speed. The truck can travel at 65 mph with a Gross Vehicle Weight of 80,000 pounds on a 5 percent grade; this compared to a diesel that can reach just 45 mph given the same parameters. The Tesla electric has four motors that independently power each of the four wheels across the rear axles. This facilitates instant traction control which helps the truck to achieve higher perform-

ance metrics. Tesla’s CEO says the truck will have a range of 500 miles before recharge, and that operators can save $200,000 in fuel costs alone over a two year period since there are fewer systems to maintain. But before electrified trucks become mainstream for long haul applications, and even with a growing preponderance of electric medium duty trucks for regional hauls available today, diesel engines remain the staple product choice. Earlier this year Kenworth, a PACCAR owned company, launched its new W990. A replacement to the W900, this iteration is designed with the driver in mind and comes with the proprietary Paccar powertrain and the MX-13 engine with ratings up to 510 horsepower and 1,850 lb. ft. torque. Commenting on the attention to driver comfort and need, Kenworth general manager Mike Dozier said, “Anything we can do to help them feel more comfortable, feel a sense of pride… that’s what we’re doing today,” he said, adding “We are passionate about our products,

our customers that depend on them, and the drivers that operate them. We know that there are many customers and drivers out there who share our passion. The Kenworth W990 represents the pride, image and freedom of trucking, and captures the spirit of what trucking is all about.” Special attention was given to the driver’s view over the hood and the strong visual appeal it provides from behind the wheel. The MX-13 Engine is known for greater tensile strength due to the inclusion of thicker graphite particles compared to standard gray iron. The engine also boasts a higher combustion rate due to better regulation of fuel in the central manifold. In early 2018 Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) introduced the medium duty Detroit DD8 diesel engine. A chief feature of the DD8 is its capacity to reduce DPF (diesel particulate filter) maintenance. The engine’s variable exhaust cam phasing increases exhaust temperatures so that manual DPF regenerations are reduced. Maintenance intervals are extended to about 55,000 miles for typical short haul applications. Power ratings vary from 260 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque to 375 horsepower and 1,050 lb. ft. torque. The smaller next-generation DD5 by CONTINUED ON PAGE 28 >

Remote Programming Expanded for Overthe-Air Software & Parameter Updates

A

ll Volvo truck owners in the U.S. and Canada with GHG 2017 Volvo engines equipped with Volvo’s factory-installed connectivity hardware are now eligible for software and parameter updates with Volvo’s Remote Programming. Users can perform updates anywhere in the U.S. and Canada where a cellular connection is available, and at the discretion of the vehicle’s decision maker. “Working directly with Volvo fleets and owners of all sizes and applications to implement Remote Programming has proven to us that the connectivity service makes a difference to our customers and their operations,” said Ashraf Makki, Volvo Trucks North America product marketing manager. “We’ve received strong acceptance of the technology and update process from professional drivers and fleet managers alike, who have embraced Remote Programming as a faster, more efficient way to help ensure trucks are updated with

the latest software to support peak performance and maximum uptime.” Owners of eligible Volvo trucks can register their trucks for Remote Programming through a simple registration portal. “We’re encouraged by the results and customer feedback from our initial introduction of Remote Programming, so we invested in the resources needed to help ensure the entire population of Volvo trucks with GHG 2017 engines could reap the uptime and efficiency benefits,” said Makki. “Updates are performed during a driver’s lunch break or when the truck is back at a depot, providing significant benefits as opposed to taking far more time for a planned stop at a service center or taking a computer out to the truck.” Remote programming of software takes less than 20 minutes, providing significant time savings when compared with taking trucks out of service to perform needed updates. To date, Remote Programming has already added thousands of days

Indians Fan Takes the Mound at WIT Day at Progressive Field

M

ark Harter has always loved trucks. As a teenager, he was intrigued by how trucks move aerodynamically, and he set up a wind tunnel in his parent’s garage. He entered the project in a science fair and won the Central Indiana Regional competition which took him all the way to the International Science and Engineering Fair in 1993. When Mark turned 21, he earned his commercial driver’s license and began his career at a flatbed carrier. Later he delivered high-end cars for Horseless Carriage for many years. In fact, he has nearly one million accident-free miles behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer. Tragically, an accident in 2005 left him legally blind and his driving days were over. Mark combined his passion for trucking with his quest to promote eyesight health care and vision safety to professional drivers by creating a

10    November 2018

program called “Eyes On The Road.” Mark contacted the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston with his idea to reach out to truck drivers to prevent and cure blindness. He wrote a proposal and was later contacted by Melanie Saunders, Director of Annual Giving, to learn he would receive the funding and “Eyes on the Road” website was created. This non-profit earned the WRTV6 Leadership Award in 2007. The effort is no longer funded, but Mark’s friendship with Melanie is intact. In fact, Melanie knew that Mark was a lifelong Cleveland Indians fan and wanted Mark to have the opportunity to throw out the ceremonial opening pitch at the Women In Trucking event held at Progressive Field in Cleveland each year. The opening pitch is auctioned off a month before the game, and this year Melanie had the

highest bid when it closed. Mark was thrilled for this opportunity and made plans to travel from his home in Milwaukee to attend the Indians (versus Red Sox) final home game September 23rd. Melanie flew in from Boston with her mother, (a Red Sox fan!) Mark’s dad drove up from his home in Tennessee to be part of the event. The Women In Trucking event began in 2013 and has become an annual event. This year, nearly 100 Cleveland area fans gathered in the terrace level, which overlooks the ball diamond at Progressive Field. Program Transportation, Inc., Travel Centers of America and Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems sponsored the event and invited their employees and customers to attend and to cheer for Mark. Everyone was excited for Mark. He had spent time practicing his pitch with the help of his cousin, a softball coach. However, once the MLB learned of Mark’s blindness, they were concerned for his safety on the field and almost denied him the opportunity. When they realized Mark has a limited amount of vision and could get to the pitcher’s mound safely, they gave the go-ahead. Mark was escorted to the field, and the announcer gave his name and told the audience he was with “the Women In Trucking group.” Mark

executed the pitch across home plate flawlessly. He and Melanie and their parents joined the group in the Terrace and were greeted with applause by the attendees. “I can honestly say it was one of the greatest moments in my entire life to this point,” Mark said, “Melanie is one of my closest and best friends, so to be able to share this experience with her made it one of the greatest days in my life,” he added. The next day, when Mark headed home, he arrived at the airport wearing his Indians cap. The reservation agent asked him about his visit to Cleveland, and when Mark told him he had thrown out the opening pitch, the agent said he had been at the game and had recognized Mark as well. He said, “You were wearing the Vaughn jersey and were from the trucking organization!” Mark then pulled out the baseball he had thrown and let the agent hold it. The agent smiled and gave Mark a drink ticket to use on the flight home! This was one of the most memorable Indians game thanks to Melanie and Mark and an amazing guy who was able to turn his dream of throwing out the opening pitch at an Indians game, into a reality. Education Is Your Personal Best

E

veryone knows the saying “knowledge is power” but how many actually practice that education is a cornerstone of their foundation as a company? Or as an individual? Interesting enough I recently enjoyed a drivers meeting where the company was enforcing mandatory training. Like bells on a Sunday morning (how many of us remember that place in time?) the voices of the gathering were sounding out loud and clear. For the seasoned veterans in the crowd this was just another insurance ploy to control them, few were embracing the idea while the minority of the clan, just out of driving school, had voiced their recent education set them apart from experienced drivers. It was an interesting gathering and although we didn’t’ have to don boxing gloves and outfit someone with a whistle and black and white striped jersey to referee, it was looking close. It was mandated by the employer that started that week online courses would be the educator of choice. Stepping into a millennial world those who were not computer literate could seek help from the Safety Department. Those who were fluent simply come into the office and take the course before departing for the scheduled loads the week ahead. It was mandatory, it was expected that week each and every person from receptionist to warehouse, all must take at least the pre–trip course. After a week the results were posted in the Safety Department. From the driver’s perspective, bad habits plagued some seasoned veterans and failing grades forced a rewrite of the test. It was interesting how the loudest, boisterous voices became soft and silent when the results were posted. It was interesting how the recently educated did not achieve 100% on the test results. Such an eclectic mix of grades. The results were a voice of their

own. It’s about education. We can all learn regardless of age, education or experience. We become complacent, i t ’s h u m a n n a t u r e . P r o m o t i n g personal growth provides value to the company but also confidence for

Diesel Fuel Systems

I

n spite of the current use of alternate fuels, it seems to me that the vocational markets, particularly construction, forestry, agriculture, utility, oil & gas and mining exploration, will be using diesel fuel well into the future. It would not be practical – read cost effective – for a fleet to provide multiple re-fuelling facilities at each of their operating locations to cover the needs of the mixed fleet of vocational trucks and equipment. This is the time of year diesel fuel is formulated for winter operations. And providing ‘clean’ fuel to your diesel engines is the main objective to keep diesel engines operating at peak efficiency throughout the winter. It is obvious that particulate (dirt) must be removed from the fuel delivery system. But, in the winter, water in diesel fuel can have a major impact on smooth trouble-free operations for those in the tough vocational markets. Regarding regular fuel filters, filter manufacturer, Donaldson Company says: ‘The published micron rating, (or particle size that a filter captures), does not provide an understanding of the performance of the filter unless you also know the efficiency at which it is measured. The efficiency of a liquid filter on a given particle size is frequently described as either a Beta ratio (ß), or as a percentage (%). Two filters that both claim to capture the same size particles or have the same micron rating may provide vastly different performance results. For example, when comparing two filters that are both rated at 5 microns, if filter A has an efficiency of 99% it will remove 99% of contaminant 5 micron and larger from the fluid. If filter B has an efficiency of 50% it will only remove 50%, or half, of the same contaminant from your fuel. Filter B may allow up to 50 times more contamination to pass than filter A, a very different level of performance!’ www.donaldsontoolbox.com It’s important to understand that the most important contaminant in diesel fuel is ‘water’! Water reduces the ability for fuel system components, pumps, injectors, etc., to be lubricated properly and will assist particulate scoring that, in the case of injectors, will cause a disruption of the spray pattern of the fuel. This means fuel will not burn 12    November 2018

efficiently and allow unburned fuel to be returned to the fuel tank. The result is increased fuel consumption and a reduction in power. Today’s ULSD (ultra-low sulphur diesel) fuels reduce the natural lubricity of diesel fuels that is necessary for the operation of pumps and injectors. Water in fuel has a major impact on the lubricity of today’s low ULSD fuels. It therefore becomes increasingly important to remove the water and replace the lost lubricity. This can be accomplished with a combination of filters, with water removal capabilities, and a fuel additive to add lubricity. Years ago, before ULSD, I was talking to a bulk fuel delivery wholesaler in central Ontario. I suggested they could get a leg up on their competitors by installing a water separator that coales-

accumulated! On another occasion we were asked by a transit bus authority to check their in-ground tanks for water. Their buses were having trouble with water in the fuel and we were looking for the source. It was suspected that a recent heavy rain storm had caused water to accumulate over the area in the yard that contained the filling points for the underground storage tanks. To determine if this was the case, we installed a water coalescer on a fuel pump and started refuelling the buses as they returned from a run. We were able to keep the water collection bowel’s drain cock open to drain the water that was being collected while we refilled the buses. Amazing! Diesel fuel handling, storage and delivery systems, all contribute to water

The majority of contaminants are removed from the fuel before it even reaches the filtration element, which removes any remaining particulates before fuel enters the engine. ces water from the fuel as it is pumped from the tank to the truck or from the fuel truck to the fleet’s storage tanks. He answered, “But, who will pay me for the water I bought with the fuel?” As a further test we used a tool that could measure the amount of water in the tank and dipped a tanker that had been parked for awhile. We measured about two inches of water that had

in fuel. Water can enter underground tanks through deteriorated tank walls or down the filler tubes. Changes in atmospheric temperature can cause condensation to form on tank walls and accumulate in the bottom of the tank. Two classifications of water are present in fuel – Free Water and Emulsified Water. Free Water is visible in large

droplet form or as a layer found in the bottom of the fuel tank. However, once vibration or movement occurs in the fuel system, Free Water is broken down into tiny particles and emulsified, or mixed, with the fuel. Passing fuel through a pump also breaks down – or emulsifies – free water into tiny, almost invisible, particles. The use of a coalescer is the only way to remove emulsified water Both free water and emulsified water should be removed from the fuel supply. KEEP THE WATER OUT! With the use of ULSD and the loss of its lubricating quality, water contamination is the most important factor to look for in diesel fuel. The diesel injection system is made up of precision components with extremely close tolerances that rely completely on the diesel fuel for lubrication. Water will hinder diesel fuels’ ability to lubricate the pump and injectors. Injectors that are scored by particulate carried in the fuel or corroded can also degrade the fit and allow fuel to drain along the injector barrel wall into the cylinder. When selecting components to keep your fuel system running at peak efficiency 1) select a primary filter to take care of the coarse particulate, 2) a secondary filter for fine particulate. You filter supplier can help you decide between a full-flow or combination full-flow by-pass system. Also, add a fuel – water coalescer after the secondary filter. There are various combinations of filters and water coalescers on the market. TTSAO Instructor of the Year Award

H

amilton, Ontario – The Truck Training Schools Association of Ontario (TTSAO) is pleased to announce a new award to be presented annually to honor commercial driver instructors. The first ever TTSAO/Paybright Commercial Driving Instructor of the Year award will be presented to a successful recipient at the 4th Annual TTSAO Conference scheduled for February 27th and 28th 2019. The TTSAO has appointed a committee to review all applications submitted by TTSAO schools and carriers. The successful candidate will need to meet or exceed the following criteria: Minimum 10 years verifiable experience, clean abstract, must be employed at a TTSAO School or TTSAO Carrier Member, must be a full-time employee of the school or carrier. The committee will also review the

following to support the candidate’s application: Any volunteerism, community and industry involvement, support letters provided by their employer, customers or industry associates, any certifications achieved. Noble Captures First Win in Bandit Finale

E

LKO NEW MARKET, Minn. (October 2018) – Everyone calls Mark Noble a rookie, but he’s a rookie in name only. Noble, wrapping up his first year in the Minimizer Bandit Big Rig Series, finally captured that elusive feature win at Elko Speedway Saturday night. “We’ve been trying to get (to Victory Lane) all year, and we finally made it,” Noble said. Noble has more than 600 career wins on the dirt track, but the 2018 season is his first go-round with the Bandits. “I have a lot of respect for Mark,” Ricky Rude said. “He races me clean, and he had a great race.” Rude fell short of the feature win, finishing second, but he picked up his second straight season points championship at the end of the night. “I’m tickled to death,” Rude said. “I hope I can make it three in a row (in 2019). That’s my goal.” Elko Speedway, the site of a packed house back in August, witnessed the return of Dave ‘Heavy D’ Sparks. Sparks piloted the #51 truck for the second time this year, while Diesel Brothers castmate and friend ‘Diesel’ Dave Kiley made his Bandit debut

driving the #98. “This is one of the wildest forms of racing I’ve ever been a part of,” Sparks said. The Bandits will take the winter to tune and tinker with their trucks, but next year’s schedule is expected to be released in the coming months. As for the ‘rookie’ Noble, he expects to be back driving for Kruckeberg Motorsports when the green flag flies for the first time in 2019. “I have to thank God for this,” Noble said. “I’m just an old guy having fun, and fortunate enough to do it.” About Bandit Big Rig Series The Bandit Big Rig Series returns big rig tractor truck racing to the short track in the United States. iMVR Introduces Unique Virtual Reality Learning Program To Trucking Industry

M

edia today is filled with accounts exposing the underbelly of our maturing in this technological world. Texting while driving and walking through intersections, social alienation from excessive attachment to our devices, and diminished levels of concentration are some of the claims cautioning us to be mindful of unrestricted use. Yet the benefits are still, by any measure, qualitative and far reaching. Innovative companies know well the payback of our digital world if they are able to harness these efficiencies and transform them into enhanced learning tools to optimize performance. Vickie Devos explains how it works: “Carriers will now be able to have their drivers or potential drivers go through the VR modules with each test unique as the random distractions will always be in different places and at different times. Furthermore, Carriers can select from different driving events upon signing into a module which places the driver in preferred contexts such as weather conditions, load weight, time of day and specific equipment,” she said. Simulated environments also include recreations of landscapes, and even near misses. Results of driver testing are then recorded and stored on a web based Canadian secure site for further review. Abundant learning opportunities are available virtually anywhere and anytime through the IRIS VR program. IRIS tracks and records the observations and performance of the driver, thereby allowing the Carrier to evaluate driver strengths and challenges under their own unique company standards and policies. Once complete, learners along with peer operators, mentors, and safety personnel, can review the results of driver performance in each of the completed modules. Drivers then can explain and relate their stories, assess near misses for example, and identify what to watch for while on the road – all while in a classroom, office, or even coffee shop. IRIS is as customizable as it is portable. iMVR stands apart from comparable products in several ways. It can be used as a Plug & Play, set up on any table, and replayed anytime, anywhere, for authorized personnel. Modules are excellent renditions of real life situations, and the Virtual Reality program has affordable startup costs and monthly fees with no hidden payment attached. Each IRIS licence can be tailored to the specific learning objectives of the Carrier. For example, upon entering the Customer or Carrier’s yard the company may encourage their operators to look 5 times from

west to east and take in distant views prior to entering the site. If someone is walking through the yard the module can detect if the learner still looked in each direction the requisite number of times without distraction from a walk by. With every action recorded, down to the identification of where the driver is looking during the exercise, the module lends itself to constructive a s s e s s m e n t o n t h e l e a r n e r ’s behaviour. As well, IRIS clients have their privacy guaranteed. Each purchaser of their program is issued a unique ID and password in accordance with iMVR’s license. Notes Vickie Devos, “This ID will always be their IRIS ID# which is transferrable from IRIS licence holder to IRIS licence holder once the waivers have been completed. This transfer can only be completed by the staff at iMVR. lover, Wisconsin – Women In Trucking Association (WIT) has announced Lana Poveda as its October Member of the Month. Lana is a CRST Expedited Team Driver with 15 years of service. All of us in the transportation industry can find inspiration in Lana Poveda’s one-million-miles of accident-free driving. What’s perhaps even more inspiring is Lana’s fun-loving, gentle and uplifting spirit – and her ability to always look on the bright side of life, even when facing one of life’s greatest challenges. Lana was diagnosed with breast cancer last month. “I had some unexpected home-time, so I squeezed in an appointment,” said Lana. I’m glad I did, as my type of breast cancer is hard to detect; and it was detected early. I’m optimistic, but I am also leaning a little harder on my partner in love and life these days.” In Lana’s case, her partner in and outside the cab is her husband, Claude. “After many years together, we’re still very much in love! It’s nice being together on the road because we work better together as a team.” Now at their home in Palm Spring, California, the two are continuing to work together through Lana’s treatment plan before returning to their favorite part of their careers as drivers – traveling to see the country. Lana recalls driving through Oregon on I-84 where there was a sight of elk grazing through a valley as far as she

and her husband could see. “It was the greatest, most beautiful and majestic thing I have ever seen,” said Lana. “Driving is a ‘lifestyle’ job, but I love driving for CRST because I get to see the whole country and I never see the same things twice. And, Lisa, our DM, is a big sweetheart – she makes working for CRST awesome.” According to Lana, CRST provides great support to women working in a male-dominated industry. “When I started, there weren’t a lot of women, but now there are so

many,” said Lana. “And, that’s really inspiring to me, especially in my current situation. It’s great to have other women out there to talk with, share tips and offer support and encouragement.” Through her positive interactions with women out on the road, Lana’s helping to change the landscape for women in the industry. “At the end of the day, you don’t have to fit into a certain persona or gender to be a driver. It’s about loving to drive and being an inspiration for all that want to enter this industry.”

We Need You, Driver! Driver Assisted Vehicles are Here But Autonomous Vehicles are a Long Way Off

I

t seems it’s almost impossible to pick up a magazine (Trucking Industry Publications included) or tune into the news without reading a story about the next great breakthrough in autonomous technology complete with opinions on when the vehicles will be commonly roaming our highways with no driver in sight. So many predicted timelines have gone by without a mention prior to the next date being predicted, it’s like an Elon Musk Tesla prediction. No one really expects the predicted date to be delivered on. Back to my title… I deplore the word Autonomous, hence my term driver assisted vehicles. The mass media’s penchant for using the term autonomous, and too many of us in the Trucking Industry following suit, is not helping us recruit tomorrow’s drivers into today’s trucking industry. In recent years this has been a tough industry to get the youth excited about, however helping portray the belief that we won’t

need you in 5 years as these trucks will be driving themselves by then, isn’t exactly you’re A list recruiting material. We, as an industry, already suffering through a shortage of talent, are helping pull the trigger of the gun that is shooting us in the foot. For this reason, we need to start, on mass, promoting these vehicles for what they are, highly advanced, finely tuned, highly technological vehicles, that when teamed up with a highly skilled operator, can be the safest and most efficient trucks we have ever seen on the road! When equipped with systems such as adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, lane departure warnings, blind spot detection, anti-rollover, amongst others, have been proven to reduce accidents, and reduce the severity of the ones they can’t eliminate. In North America, with our infrastructure the way it is, “AV’s” must rely on sensors, radars, GPS and lidar to operate their systems. At this point, these devices have proven extremely

unreliable in adverse weather conditions such as snow, ice, fog and rain. Is this technology improving, yes, but even according to the manufacturers these devices are a ways off from being able to operate in full autonomous mode via sensors and GPS. In order for a vehicle to be truly autonomous, they need to be connected to an advanced infrastructure through sensors and guides. AV infrastructure is being constructed in certain jurisdictions in small areas for testing purposes, such as Calgary and Ottawa, for the purpose of testing on public transit vehicles. If it proves feasible, in time I can see more of these types of autonomous vehicle operation centres, however even then, I still see people being present for the foreseeable future, mainly for reasons of public perception and liability. For longdistance travel, is it realistic at this point to see a coast to coast network constructed for autonomous or connected vehicle operation? I for one, can’t see this any time soon. We can’t

even get a national standard for such things as highway construction or the paint and reflective material that is used for marking signs and roads. Ever drove on an Ontario highway in the rain and tried to figure out what lane you’re in? The lines literally disappear from view, and I personally have asked the Province to review the paint they use and come up with a more reflective and visible option, and in over three years even that has not been accomplished. Good luck getting a standardised AV network constructed. I don’t mean to sound negative, or dismissive when it comes to these vehicles, I just think we all need a shot of reality. Do my views mean I think we should forget about this technology? No, quite the opposite. I believe we will see further adoption in controlled environments such as mining, forestry and oil fields. I believe we need to make systems such as adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, and others mentioned earlier, mandatory. These driver assist technologies have proven their worth. These tools, coupled with a skilled driver, improve public safety immensely. We should ensure we have regulations that allow further testing of technology devices, but also keep public safety in mind. Let’s all embrace technology but be realistic at the same time. If we use the current state of advancement in our vehicles properly, we can actually use this as a recruiting device for tomorrows driver. The role of the driver is always going to be needed, the occupation is just going to change going forward. The driver of the future may be more in line with that of an airline pilot today, but still needed. This type of technology is what excites today’s youth. Let’s market this properly and change the narrative!

Improving Your Sleep on the Road

W

e’re always told that we need 8 hours of sleep, but that’s easier said than done! Plus, if we’re not getting good quality sleep, it doesn’t matter how long we’re down for, we won’t be properly rested for the next day. Think about it – sleep is how your body recovers and heals itself each night, but if sleep is being compromised, how can you expect it to function properly? Sleep on the road is even more of an issue, as the environment isn’t ideal, but these tips can help you make the most out of your shut eye in the truck so that your health, energy, and safety on the road are at their best.

• Set a strict bed time. It’s easy to push the time back later and later when you’re busy scrolling on your phone, talking to family at home, or watching a movie. Don’t negotiate with yourself, and don’t stay up past your bed time! • Exercise daily, which has been shown to greatly improve the time it takes to fall asleep as well as sleep quality. For some, exercise too late at night can cause difficulty falling asleep, so if that’s the case for you, be sure to work out earlier in the day! • Get fresh air throughout the day. You know how well you sleep after spending a long day outside? That’s what we’re going for here! If you

We often jump into bed with a mind still racing from the day, expecting to just be able to shut it off instantly and fall asleep. It can be as short as 5 minutes and as simple as listening to calming music while focusing on your breath. I recommend using an app to guide you, such as Insight Timer or Headspace. • Stick to a routine. You may not be able to get to bed at the same time each night, but you should follow a ritual of 2-3 steps each night before shutting down. This will help prep your body for sleep, signaling that it is time to wind down. Even

something as simple as brushing your teeth and then reading for 10 minutes can make a difference if you stay consistent. Make a tea, do some stretches, meditate, etc. … just keep it consistent! • Evaluate your mattress: The mattress that came in your truck likely isn’t the best one for you, so if you don’t love it, fix it! Buying a foam topper is a great way to improve your mattress affordably, and there are endless options to choose from. Gel toppers keep you cool, while memory foam is very comfortable and great for sore joints; both can be purchased in firm or soft varieties. • Block out Light: Get extra blackout curtains for the windshield/windows, or use a sleep eye mask if you’re sensitive to light. • Sound: If you are easily woken by sound, consider a white noise machine or app, fan, or earplugs.

ike any enterprise, companies in the commercial transportation industry tend to follow traditional business models. Since then she has leveraged her work experience and education into EOD Consulting. Critics may deride a liberal arts education as too general in a changing economy that demands industryspecific skill sets, but its focus on general knowledge and communication fluency is essential for creating new growth models. Load Volumes Shows Signs of Recovery

T

ORONTO – TransCore Link Logistics’ Canadian load volumes ended the third quarter with an expected dip following an anticipated slower performance during the summer months. However, the Canadian spot market showed resilience as September ended with improved load volumes compared to the start of the month. At the beginning of September, the truck-to-load ratio hovered around 2.90, but improved to 2.68 by the month’s end, signaling a potential recovery in capacity as the autumn season approaches. 3RD QTR LOAD PERFORMANCE Load volumes in the third quarter declined 29 percent compared to historic and unprecedented load volumes in Q2, but only decreased 11 percent compared to the third quarter of 2017. Other quarterly highlights

• Load volumes in Q3 2018 were the second highest Q3 ever re-

corded by Loadlink, behind only Q3 2017. • Truck volumes experienced greater recovery as 2018 progressed, with Q3 truck postings surging over one million trucks postings per month (last seen in Q3 2016). Compared to last month, the number of loads posted on Loadlink in September was down 15 percent. Year-over-year, volumes were 22 percent lower than the volumes recorded in September 2017. These results indicate a particularly quiet season of shipping activity during a year of record-breaking load activity on Loadlink. The effects of

economic trade uncertainties revolving around NAFTA and the unfortunate natural disasters that befell core trade routes may have adversely impacted load activity. These suppositions, however, only represent two of multiple drivers impacting activity. Intra-Canada loads accounted for 33 percent of the total volumes and represented a seven percent decrease year-over-year. Cross-border load postings represented 65 percent of the data submitted by Loadlink users: • Loads leaving Canada to the United States decreased 26 percent year-over-year, and

• Loads entering Canada also decreased 26 percent year-over-year. Equipment Performance September’s equipment postings decreased 11 percent when compared to August 2018 and increased 16 percent when compared to September 2017. Equipment capacity increased 23 percent in Q3 2018 when compared to Q2 2018. TRUCK-TO-LOAD RATIO Truck volumes continued to elevate amidst declining load volumes. This significant boost in truck availability coupled with lessened load activity caused the truck-to-load ratio to rise above two trucks available for every load posted on Loadlink. In September, the number of trucks posted on Loadlink was 2.68 for every one load posted on the network, compared to 2.55 in August. Yearover-year, the ratio expanded from 1.80 in September 2017. The average truck-to-load ratio for Q3 2018 was 2.48.

Engine Oil Additives: A Careful Balancing Act

F

or many fleet owners, they are looking for a heavy-duty engine oil to help lower fuel costs, cut carbon emissions and reduce downtime, while offering superior engine protection to keep their trucks running efficiently and consistently. In late 2016, new specifications were introduced (API CK-4 and FA-4) that brought this to reality. With the latest innovations in additive technology, they helped shape the way for performance improvements. Special chemical compounds or oil additives improve the performance of a base oil. Typically sold together as a “package”, additives help an oil meet a specific performance target and make up 10-20 per cent of the volume of the oil. It’s this hidden technology and its unique ability to enhance engine oils that we’ll be exploring here. A CAREFUL BALANCE Additives are one of the many components that work together in an engine oil to ensure hardware protection and longevity of vital components. For example, specific additives include anti-oxidants, anti-wear, anti-foam, detergents and dispersants. This includes zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (often referred to as ZDDP) which is a more commonly used additive that offers both oxidation control and wear protection. Carefully balanced, the chemicals are used together to form an additive system which is vital for delivering the performance of the oil. For newer, low viscosity oils, sufficient antiwear compounds or other forms of chemical surface protection must be included. These types of oils deliver benefits in terms of fuel economy, but without the correct additives they may not be able to sufficiently lubricate the engine surfaces to keep them from metal to metal contact – increasing the rate of wear. The balance of the additive formulation is crucial, more is not always better and each individual additive can influence the oils performance. Not always fit for purpose on their own, individual additives present benefits when used in a properly formulated lubricant. It is due to this careful balancing that adding supplementary additives to an engine oil is greatly discouraged as it may result in sig-

nificant detrimental side effects and potentially void the engine manufacturer’s warranty. Duty X12 Engine. Its status as the lightest heavy duty engine in North America was achieved by eliminating unnecessary mass. “Weight is critical in all applications – vocational and bulk haulers, as well as regional haul and pick-up and delivery. The Cummins X12 will provide customers with the lightest engine in the Class 8 market,” said Amy Boerger, Vice President of Sales at Cummins. Which Road Shall I Take?

D

id you know that life is like a journey? This journey of life has two roads and two destinations. The choice and decision of which road to take is up to you. As a child you walk for a while on the road of innocence, and then you come to a crossroads. The road of childhood and innocence ends, and you discover two distinct roads. As you come to this crossroads you must make a decision. Which road shall I take? This decision is very important; the most important decision in life because one road leads to heaven and the other road leads to hell. “Choose you this day whom ye will serve,” (Joshua 24:15). As you stand at the crossroads, what do you see? Take a good look at the two roads. You will see that one road is wide and apparently smooth and easy to travel. The other road is narrow. It requires saying “no” to sin. The wide road has many people

walking on it, while the narrow road has only a few. Jesus said, “Enter ye at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in there at: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it,” (Matthew 7:13-14). Are you confused or not sure about which road to take? If you step closer to the wide, well-traveled road, you will hear Satan, the master of this road, asking you to walk with him. Satan’s story sounds very enticing. Along his road he offers many friends, and everyone seems to be quite happy. People beginning to walk this road may have good intentions. Many are able to refrain from the pitfalls for a while. Did you notice that Satan never mentioned the final result of traveling his road? He wouldn’t dare. Take a closer look at the narrow road. This road is for everyone – no

one is turned away. Jesus wants to be your Savior and personal guide. He asks you to repent of your sins, surrender your will, and trust in Him. He says, “Learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is

easy, and my burden is light,” (Matthew 11:29-30). Even if you are now travelling on the wide roads, today is the time to choose the narrow road. It means either heaven or hell for you throughout eternity. Choose the narrow road, and ask Jesus to help you.

N

o matter the type or method that your local road/highway crew choose to manage ice and snow on the roads, the method will have an impact on the underneath of your vehicles. As I write this article in early October, there are many areas already hit with major snow across the country. Global warming? According to a study by School Bus Fleet Magazine, a survey across North America had some stunning results. In the survey 81% of the respondents encountered salt on their roads, 19% did not encounter any salt on their roads: • Average bus retirement age: • Large Bus WITH SALT/BRINE 14.1 years • Large Bus WITHOUT SALT/BRINE 18.3 years That is an average of almost 25% longer life for a bus! I am sure this is the same statistics for any truck or commercial vehicle on the road, not washing their vehicles.

What does that mean? Well, for anyone washing and eliminating salt/ brine from their vehicles, they can extend the life of your fleet by 25%. We have to believe this would be true. To truly eliminate the issue is the need for an undercarriage spray system to clean the underneath of your vehicles. There are more and more simpler systems available that can help these situations immensely. How do you wash and eliminate salt/brine all depends on the methods you are willing to invest in? • Mobile Spray company in your yard – do they clean underneath your vehicles? • Public Wash – do they have the option of undercarriage spray? • Your Own Wash Bay – do you have the time and energy to invest in this cleaning? How do you wash your trucks today? Plan a strategy to ensure the life of your trucks will not be adversely af-

fected by taking the time to strategize a method of cleaning. It may take some investment money or time to research that will ensure there is adequate facilities to clean your trucks. I am sure the ROI for this time will pay off immediately and of course over the life time of your trucks. As with any cleaning, there are professionals available to discuss the options that can help you. It’s a matter of only needing this strategy for a few months a year in the winter.

There are methods that are temporary that can help keep your vehicles clean and safe, so you don’t have to keep apparatus in your shop or yard for a full year.
