he campaign to attract more women to the Canadian trucking industry now has its most visible promotion yet. The Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada (WTFC) recently unveiled a 2019 Western Star 5700XE with a promotional wrap featuring the organization’s name and pictures of its members. The 5700XE model, which is owned by Sharp Transportation Systems, has been named “Miss Destiny Star” by company driver Shelley Uvanille-Hesch, founder of the WTFC and a tireless champion of women in the trucking industry. “I will be driving this truck across Canada and into the United States and I know everyone who sees it will be a little more aware that women do work in trucking and that it’s an industry that can provide a good living for them,” UvanilleHesch said. Several years ago, she contacted Western Star to ask for the company’s support of the WTFC. Since then, Western Star has been a corporate member of the organization and funded the truck wrap. The WTFC has worked closely with the group at Highway Western Star in Ayr, Ontario, the dealership where the 5700XE was purchased. “The Women’s Trucking Federation is doing great work,” a representative from Highway Western Star said. “The trucking industry needs to attract more women and help the women already in the business. We’re proud to be associated with the organization and glad we had the opportunity to assist with this new truck purchase and the message it promotes with the exterior wrap.” Since its founding in 2014, the WTFC

has grown to more than 300 members. It’s active on a number of fronts, from mentoring women in driving school and hosting career events at high schools to giving interviews to polish the public image of truckers. The federation also is involved in several charitable causes and appears at industry events to gain visibility and recruit women drivers, managers, dispatchers and technicians. The federation is drawing growing support in the industry. For example, Challenger Motor Freight, one of Canada’s largest trucking firms, recently announced that it would pay a year’s membership dues for any of its female drivers who join WTFC. “Western Star has a long heritage of females in executive positions and believes women play a critical role in diversifying our industry,” said Samantha Parlier, Vice-President of Marketing and Strategy for Western Star. “We are honored our 5700XE truck model is the flagship representation of this important organization.” The 2019 Western Star 5700XE is an ideal truck to raise awareness of the WTFC. The 5700XE already turns heads with its striking aerodynamic design and classic Western Star style, and the wrap, as well as a custom-designed blue and pink LED lighting scheme, are guaranteed to draw attention. When Uvanille-Hesch isn’t driving it, the truck will make appearances at shows and charitable events in Canada. “I want to thank Western Star, Sharp Transportation, Highway Western Star and the other organizations which have done so much to help WTFC,” Uvanille-Hesch said. “I can’t wait to get behind the wheel.” For more information, go to WesternStarTrucks.com.

ear Reader, Is the content of our publication of value to you? Our readership, the vocational/work truck operators in Canada, range from owner-operators and small to medium sized contractors plus larger vocational operators, such as major construction companies, utilities, municipalities, etc. that represent over two thirds of the Canadian truck parts and service market value. Virtually all surveys made by trade publications and trade groups asking readers to rate the editorial they would like to see in a trade magazine receive the same reply: New Technology, Parts & Components plus Maintenance Tips and Procedures that will reduce operating costs. To make sure we give you what you want let us know the content categories that you want covered. Our slogan “We work for You!” comes from our ability to see the vocational market through your eyes. Our key people have years of supply side and publishing experience. We are probably the only Canadian trucking magazine that can make that claim. Do you have a driver shortage? Our industry has, for some time, been suffering from a shortage of professional
drivers, technicians and all manner of staff from OE dealers and independent distributors. It’s not a shortage of people that could fill these positions it’s just that, for some reason, our industry just doesn’t seem to be an attractive career choice for the numbers necessary to fill the many job opportunities available. I read with interest Al Tucker’s account of his trip to cover Volvo’s introduction of the VNX series at the Volvo Customer Experience Center in Virginia – and how easy it was to drive the new units. Added to the attention paid to driver comfort I started thinking about how, if prospective drivers knew about the improvements in today’s trucks, it just might raise the interest level. And, the other thought I had was the lack of women drivers. Maybe the barrier is really just an image issue. The one fact I do know is that there are many women driving parts delivery and courier trucks plus other light and medium trucks. A perfect group to reach out to for candidates. The story on this page about the Western Star collaboration with the Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada is a strong indication that today’s truck builders are taking this demographic seriously.

key area for driver safety improvement in the trucking industry is in the entry and exit of vehicles from ground level as drivers climb into the bed of the trailer using the ICC bumper or other unsafe methods. Accord-ing to Amerisafe.com 54% of all driver inju-ries from slips and falls are from getting on and off trucks and trailers. Designed for van trailers or straight trucks with a 48” deck height, Ancra’s new trailer access steps provide a highstrength and durable solution for easily accessing trailers. Our trailer access steps are designed to be permanently mounted under a trailer door and can be easily pulled out to aide in ac-cessing the inside of the trailer. Built with interlocking tabs and slot construction at key points, our unique joint design holds up to 350 lbs. Whether you purchase a 2-step or 3-step unit we manufacture each unit with your choice of either a highly-visible safety yellow powered coat or a hot dip galvanized zinc coat for optimum corrosion resistance. Unlike other standard access steps, An-cra’s trailer access steps include a latch to hold the step securely in position providing a strong, safe and
secure way to stow until needed. In addition, our trailer access steps are built with an aggressive formed anti-slip surface and self-cleaning design that allows snow and ice to drop through the tread to avoid buildup. So whether its winter or summer, your employees can feel confident that they’ll keep their footing while getting in and out of the trailer reducing the risk of falling from the vehicle and saving you from devastating injuries and downtime costs. SAF Holland Tire Pilot Plus
P
roper tire inflation has a direct effect on tire wear and fuel economy. According to TMC, trailer tires can lose up to 2 psi per month through the inner liner and casing, regardless of use. The TMC calculates that tires underinflated by 10% will wear 9% to 16% faster than properly inflated tires. TMC also reports under-inflated tires add rolling resistance that can reduce fuel economy by as much as 2%*. Tire Pilot Plus provides con-sistent and proper inflation to compensate for psi loss. Tire Pilot Plus not only controls pressure through inflation but also maintains equal pressure across all wheels and features High-Pressure Relief (HPR) for over-inflated tires, which could occur from extreme tem-perature changes during operation. With an ROI of less than one year, Tire Pilot reduces tire wear, decreases downtime by reducing maintenance, and improves fuel economy. Tire Pilot Plus manages costs by decreasing maintenance in six ways: • Reducing time spent on tire repair and replacements. • Eliminating the need for routine pressure checks. • A robust design utilizing durable
components in a non-pressurized axle environment that increase the system’s life. • Incorporating knurled connections at both the cap and tire ends of the stainless steel hose, for easy hand-tighten connections without a wrench. • The unique design of the hubcap with fins that protect the air fitting connections from damage. • The polished steel/flexible tubing insert shaft and internal double lip seal provide an extremely robust seal that allows for poten-tial axial misalignment and years of trouble-free service. For easy installation, Tire Pilot has a customized plug-in electrical harness to fit your application, and it maintains tire pressures even when the system is not connected to the tractor. Factoring

How to Seek Professional Financial Help
U
nless your company is well endowed with the needed resources to efficiently manage all aspects of the business you operate, it only makes good sense to outsource expertise as required. The most efficient way to operate a business is to recognize your company’s core strength, capitalize on it and acquire professional help to manage the business necessities that challenge your organization. This principle is highly applicable to the freight transportation industry. From start-up companies to growing operations, almost all trucking companies need financing at some point in their development. Freight transportation is a capital intense industry with daily expense obligations. Reliable access to working capital is a concern that occupies the minds of company owners each and every day. Most trucking companies are operated and managed by truckers, who by nature are hardworking problem solvers with an ambition to get the job done. These character traits are essential to ensure a successful freight carrier enterprise, but more is needed to complete the balanced structure of a successful trucking operation. As with all businesses, the maintaining of positive cash flow and profitable margins are an absolute necessity. For a large majority of commercial trucking operations, these two financial requirements are the greatest of challenges to be faced. Maintaining profitable margins is in
principle a simple matter of developing a viable business model and ensuring revenues out measure expenditures. In practicality, it is much more complicated. Much has been written on this topic in previous articles in which financial consultant David Boyd outlines specific best practices to follow. As for the issue of maintaining positive cash flow, the professional help provided to trucking companies is getting more prevalent. At one time, the only real funding option available to the trucking industry was through the traditional banking system. However, their restrictive qualification requirements and limited credit structure negates this facility as having real value to the common trucking business. Fortunately the popularization of freight factoring as a mainstream alternative financial solution has eased the financial burden faced by carriers. Freight factoring is offered by professional 3rd party financial providers who are experienced in commercial transportation. Their cash flow solutions are designed specifically for the trucking industry and therefore are geared to suit the demanding needs of the industry. Access to working capital is made easy and fast to support the operational needs of a busy carrier. Whether it is a fleet of 300 trucks or a single truck operator, freight factoring provides the funds required to keep trucks moving. It is incumbent on truck company owners to do their due diligence and
select the best factoring company to meet their needs. Start by doing a Google search for Freight Factoring or Factoring for Trucking. Many options will appear on the search engine result page. Select the ones you want to call and ask three important questions; how fast do you get your funding, do they understand your
trucking business, and are their rates competitive? Following these discussions, you should get a good feel as to which factor is best suited to meet your needs. For more information on Freight Factoring, visit www.accutraccapital.com or call 855.838.7575.

Titan – “Strength Through Innovation”
A
lot has happened at Titan Trailers Inc. since I first met their President Mike Kloepfer in 1973 at his farm-based manufacturing operation in Harley, Ontario. He had a vision then, with respect to fabricating specialized highway trailers that focused on innovative designs combined with efficient processes and highest quality finish. Fast forward to 2018 and my visit to the recently expanded 200,000 square foot Titan manufacturing facility in Courtland, Ontario. It can be accurately verified, that the name Titan Trailers also stands for, “Greatness Through Innovation”! My first impression of their new $10 million stand-alone trailer finishing shop – clearly visible from Highway #3 – was that it looked like a Hanger for a 747 aircraft. My subsequent tour of the facility only reinforced that feeling. The attention to detail has Mike’s name written all over it. It features heated shop floors, hi-tech programmable overhead LED lighting, vinyl covered walls in the acid wash bay with a sophisticated water filtration system and an expansive south sloping roof design set up for the future installation of solar panels. Think “unplugged” from the grid, and Titan’s future hydroelectric energy cost savings will give them a further competitive edge. With a current workforce of around 250 motivated specialists and the exclusive use of weight/fuel saving Aluminum in all future Trailer designs, combined with their continued incorporation of state-of-the–art robotic technology in the plants, production is gradually being ramped up from 800 units towards their objective of 1,200 units annually. If their plans sound overly ambitious for a family owned Canadian company, it’s because in recent years they have successfully expanded their market beyond Canada and the USA. A recent addition of a 21,000 sq.ft. assembly facility in Middlesbrough, UK, has been set up to service demand throughout the UK. Its location at this East coast port city will give Titan the opportunity to expand sales into the EU market. Combine this export plan with their decision in 2016 to appoint “Thinwall™ Trailers Australia” as their exclusive agent in Mount Gambier, Australia to assemble and market Titan bulk haulage trailers, further demonstrates the global appeal for Titan Trailers products. Titan’s walking floor semi-trailer for the waste industry along with a B-double grain hopper combo went on display at the “International Truck, Trailer Show” in Melbourne that spring. Titan Trailers 8 May 2018
Assembly Kits were created for containerized ocean freight travel to these locations. IKEA®, eat your heart out! An example of their innovative achievements in fuel saving, smooth side technology, is their patented THINWALL ™ double-wall extruded aluminum panel first applied to bulk material handling trailer designs. Keith® Walking Floor® and V-Floor™ conveyor systems are a popular customer specification. Their most recent innovative success is in the form of a unique round-barrel shaped compacting trailer for the waste hauling industry. Nicknamed “THE TITAN MISSILE”, this compacting and futuristic trailer design is destined to revolutionize the industry. This safer, fuel saving design has more than met original expectations. To keep pace with Titan’s expanding business and to meet their growing need for experienced aluminum welders, in 2015 Titan offered to work with Fanshawe College in the region. The company provided the College with a $40,000 grant to add essential equipment and to introduce a special aluminum welding course. In addition, an award program is offered to outstanding students annually through 2020. Titan now also offers an in-house aluminum welding school, where qualified applicants are paid a wage over the course of a 4-6week program. Those who graduate by meeting Titan’s high-quality welding standards are pretty much guaranteed employment. I’m convinced that the Titan Story already stands as an inspiration to other aspiring Canadian companies in the field of commercial vocational vehicle manufacturing. Far from being a corner office “suit”, Mike spends his day walking
his plants; coaching, meeting with staff, monitoring the ongoing construction and inspecting the production process. He’s
believe in the adage that, “The Only Way to Change the Future is to Invent It”! My visit with Mike was an emotional
always looking for ways to fine tune his latest innovations. The 2nd generation of the Kloepfer family is already being groomed to “handle the torch” and to
40+ year walk down memory lane. He confided that he has succeeded beyond his dreams, but he’s not finished yet. Way to go Mike! TUCK

DIETER’S METAL FABRICATING
Big Rig, Big Investment – Stainless Steel Accessories for Today’s Professional Drivers

hen you own or operate a big rig – it is a big investment. Knowing that customers need reliable, high quality products that are built to outlast and outshine – Dieter’s strives to keep their reputation stainless. Listening to the customer and delivering a product that is worthy of your hard earned dollars, is just one of the key successes behind Dieter’s. As the high-quality accessory manufacturer of choice for North America’s heavy truck OEM’s, Dieter’s stands behind their products. After all, the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten. “Being known as one of the most respected names in the truck aftermarket industry has come by listening to our customers,“ said Dieter’s Vice President Peter Hohendorn. “And then delivering a product that not only meets their expectations but exceeds them. We take our reputation as a trusted name in truck accessories seriously.” The accessories designed and manufactured at Dieter’s use only high-quality 304 mirror finish stainless steel – which is non-magnetic and non-corroding. Using the 304 grade stainless steel is another distinguishing factor from competitors – who often opt for the lower grade 400-series stainless steel. “We believe most customers still prefer quality when it comes to their accessories, especially exterior products that are subjected to harsh environmental conditions. After all, stainless is all about appearance, how good will they look if they rust or corrode within the first year?” said Colin Thur, Dieter’s National Sales Manager. “At Dieter’s we source higher nickel content in our stainless steel, which allows it to look great through first ownership – if not the lifetime of your truck.” Accessories produced at Dieter’s don’t just belong in a show-and-shine, but on the highways and backroads of North America. “The more popular accessories provide both function and style,” commented Thur. Among them extended sun visors that greatly help reduce eyestrain, fender guards and bug deflectors that protect against high mileage wear and tear, and cab and sleeper panels – designed to enhance visibility and safety at night. The meticulous manufacturing process involved to produce superior quality that underscores Dieter’s international reputation starts with the design team then progresses to the highly trained fabricators – who ensure that products are handled properly through the entire fabrication process to protect products
from dents and scratches. “Our core business is manufacturing semi-truck parts and accessories,” said Hohendorn. “We use #8 finish stainless most often, since the mirrored finish is ideal for decorative parts such as exhaust shields, sun visors, light bars as well as many other accessories.” Dieter’s has been manufacturing highquality truck accessories since 1976, when Dieter Hohendorn, a highly skilled sheet metal tradesman with a passion for the art of metal fabrication, began building sleepers on trucks. Now, 40 years later, Dieter’s operates under two banners – Dieter’s and Panelite – offer-
ing thousands of products. The company has become the largest, most trusted and most OEM awarded name in highquality stainless steel accessories for today’s Big Rigs. Building on the high-quality products is the company’s commitment to customer service – including standing behind their products with an unbeatable warranty. Confident in the products they manufacture and sell, Dieter’s is required to offer a one year warranty though the OEM distribution channels, however Dieters offers a second year on our stainless steel simply because we can.
Dieter’s is currently the only stainless steel manufacturer in North America that maintains the highest quality standard for the automotive industry – taking pride in being TS 16949 and ISO 9001 certified. The company is also ISO 140001 Environmentally certified. The results of the above are the highest quality stainless steel accessories available at over 2,000 dealerships throughout North America. Out Work, Out Play, Out Drive, Out Last and Out Shine – with high quality custom products for today’s professional drivers. Visit www.dietersaccessories or www. panelite.com for product listings.

Lubrication: The Engine Lifesaver
T
he first filter used to keep oil clean was a bypass filter introduced in the ‘30’s. Oil flowed directly from the oil pan to the engine’s working parts, and a smaller proportion of the oil was sent through the filter via a second flow path that worked in parallel “bypassing” the first. In the late 40’s full-flow oil filters – depth then pleated paper – were introduced. Over time OEM’s moved from a combination of separate full-flow and by-pass filters to just a high-efficiency full-flow filter. Today there are a number of by-pass filter manufacturers serving the aftermarket. Filter media used ranges from toilet paper to cotton mixed with wood wool. When evaluating the effectiveness of the by-pass filter it’s critical that the media is tightly packed and doesn’t settle or channel allowing the oil to literally “by-pass” the by-pass filter material. Ram-packed, organic, depth elements can control particulates as well as corrosive contaminants such as acids, salt compounds, gums, lacquers, and varnishes. Benefits of a bypass filter: 1. Greater particulate filtration efficiency.
5. Longer oil drain intervals. 6. Reduced engine wear. 7. Longer engine life. The important difference between a fullflow filter and a bypass filter is the ability of a by-pass filter to remove much finer particulate than a full-flow filter. In other words, keeping your oil clean is better accomplished by using a full flow filter in combination with a bypass filter. AUTO-LUBE SYSTEMS Whether you operate highway trucks and trailers, buses, construction or agricultural equipment, poor lubrication of moving components impacts on equipment operating life – and cost – more than any other maintenance procedure. In fact, bearing failure is one of the major causes of equipment downtime, lost productivity and increased cost faced by today’s truck and equipment owner. To properly lubricate a bearing, it’s important to first know how grease works. Grease functions in two ways: 1. It provides a barrier between the pin and bushing – or roller/ball and bearing race – which reduces friction between wear surfaces and thereby extends the life of the components and
2. Removal of organic material. 3. Higher contaminant holding capacity. 4. Keeps engine oil cleaner and extends oil drain intervals.
2. grease creates a collar that impedes the entry of wear-causing contaminants. The greasing procedure also flushes contaminants from the bearing cavity.
The governing principle of most automatic lubrication systems is that its more effective to provide grease in small amounts very frequently – and to do so while the machine is operating. The greasing procedure also flushes contaminants from the bearing cavity. And, no matter how diligently the maintenance technician adheres to a greasing program, it’s almost impossible to keep up with changing operating conditions and bearing needs. Most maintenance programs call for components to be greased with a hand operated grease gun at preset intervals (once a day, week, month, etc.) and to do this when the machine is idle. This brings up several questions: Will the grease penetrate 360 degrees and flush out all the contaminant while the bearing is “resting”? In the case of a pin and bushing, the answer is NO! Will the greasing procedure take place when the bearing needs it the most? As mentioned, technicians tend to grease based on a preset PM
interval – daily, weekly, monthly. This may not coincide with optimum operational requirements. Example: in the case of mobile equipment the operating environment is in constant change. One day it is dry and dusty – and the next day it rains. Bearing contamination cannot be measured based on time intervals. Will the right amount of grease be applied to each bearing? Depending on size, each bearing requires a different amount of grease. The technician will tend to grease until the new grease is seen oozing from the bearing. Not only is this wasteful but it is not an indication that the complete bearing cavity has received grease particularly where the pin is resting on the bushing. The governing principle of most automatic lubrication systems is that it’s more effective to provide grease in small amounts very frequently – and to do this while the machine is operating. This guarantees that the bearing will always have the optimum amount of lubricant.

Fifth Wheel Needs Greasing, Here’s Why
F
or an over-the-highway truck driver a long way from home, one of the last things on his mind is the grease on his tractor-trailer’s fifth wheel. Until, that is, the heavy load behind him starts doing some of the steering for him… at a not-so-comfortable 65 mph. Without proper lubrication, the natural friction of the two flat metal surfaces connecting at the fifth wheel will increasingly hinder the free movement required during actual driving and hauling operations. Especially in cold weather, the metalon-metal seizing can prevent the tractortrailer unit from turning correctly. A PROBLEMATIC SITUATION The result is a tractor-trailer unit that will become increasingly difficult to steer, handle and stabilize. This can stress both the driver and the equipment, to the point of required costly repairs and, potentially, even catastrophic and tragic results. The damage can range from worn tires, to chafed upper and lower fifth wheel plates, to actual disengagement of the tractortrailer unit!
10 May 2018
To avoid such issues, some truck and trailer equipment suppliers have experimented with lubrication-free fifth wheels, while others have introduced slippery pads to eliminate the need for lubrication. However, the overwhelming majority of tractor-trailers in use today still require good ol’ grease on their fifth wheels. An autolube system from BEKA offers a safe, clean, efficient way to ensure your
truck’s fifth wheel is getting just the right amount of lubrication. NOT TOO MUCH, NOT TOO LITTLE As with automatic lubrication systems, our fifth-wheel solution is designed to supply the optimum amount of grease, whether it be as a stand-alone system or part of a vehicle package. We’ve all seen trucks “bobtailing” down the road with globs of grease on their
fifth wheels. They’ve probably just come out of the shop and are on their way to a nearby yard to pick up a trailer to head out on the highway. Well, as soon as the driver backs that tractor up to the trailer, the vast majority of that grease will be pushed away, either onto the nose of the trailer or, perhaps even worse, onto the ground. HOW IT WORKS When we install an autolube system, we drill and tap the channels or grooves that are built into the fifth wheel design. The grease is then metered up and along these channels, smearing across the flat surface of the fifth wheel while the tractor-trailer moves down the highway. The standard is for four such access points, but we can also attach two additional points at the fifth wheel pivots. Learn why this is going to make your ride safer and save you money in maintenance costs. Drop us a line at sales@ beka-lube.com and we will “hook you up”. Once the officers opened these containers and realized that this white powder indeed tested positive for cocaine, the two people were arrested for possession of over seven kilograms of cocaine and were turned over to the RCMP. Brampton, Ontario man, Parminder Sidhu, 43, was charged and convicted of conspiracy to export cocaine from the USA into Canada. Sidhu had been hired by Michael Bagri, to transport 97 kilograms of cocaine in a tractor trailer truck from California to Buffalo, New York where then he met up with another man named Ravinder Arora who then tried to cross the Queenston/Lewis-
ton bridge border but he was stopped, greeted, caught red handed and arrested by US Customs and Border Patrol. Bagri and Sidhu were known to the US CBP for previous offences of trying to carry 26 kilograms of cocaine in a truck-driving tandem across the Pembroke, Ontario border from New York. In total there were 6 men all convicted and sentenced for drug smuggling, possession and intent to traffic. On April 9, 2018 at the Coutts, Alberta border crossing, CBSA seized 24 undeclared firearms. The two travellers, Douglas Gies, 41 and Caroline Elizabeth Gies, 42, were destined for Alaska; they were pulled over for a secondary inspection. They were both driving SUV’s with trailers in tow. Concealed within their vehicles was found 16 long guns, eight handguns and 70 overcapacity magazines; not only were they not declared by the two but the guns were clas-

Truck Systems & Equipment
How Does On-Board Truck Scale Technology Help the Transportation Industry BY KEVIN HILL
O
n-board truck scales are a wireless weighing system that can be fitted on a truck. They are regarded as one of the most versatile and convenient weighing equipment for many industries, including the transportation industry. They can weigh the payload of a vehicle with high accuracy. They use a special signal that is transmitted to a monitor. Load cell technology is employed and when combined with the pres-sure readings of the air suspension, you can determine the weight of the truck and the load. You can install the on-board scales on a wide variety of trucks and fit them specifically to meet the truck’s requirements. The main advantage is that the scale and the weight information readout is on the truck itself, allowing the weighing to take place at the load site. Let us look at some features and advantages of on-board truck scales that benefit the transportation industry. FEATURES: • They can be installed permanently and used anytime. • They help the truck operators maintain the optimal vehicle loads, thus improving the lifespan of the vehicle and its
performance on-board truck scales can measure the exact quantities of the materials being loaded extremely accurately. • They also help in detecting minor fluctuations in the net weight of the vehicle. These factors help in keeping the vehicle safe from accidents that can be caused due to overloading or excess weight of the vehicle. • They reduce the time required to load and weigh the goods being transported without affecting the accuracy of the measurement They can withstand rough conditions that are common in the transportation industry, such as unfavorable weather and tough terrains. • You can use the on-board truck scales with numerous vehicle types • They reduce under and overloading charges by optimizing vehicle load and determining a load’s exact payload production value while in motion. ADVANTAGES: BETTER EFFICIENCY On-board truck scales allow you to get the maximum capacity without overloading the truck. On-board truck scales optimize efficiency for different weighing and operation systems. Since you can track the exact weight loads during the transport, you can minimize
the additional time and energy taken to measure the payloads. When the truck isn’t overloaded, the consumption of fuel also reduces which is a bonus in the transport industry. INCREASED SAFETY There is a chance of the trucks tipping over due to excess weight if the goods are not measured properly, leading to accidents. On-board truck scales help in measuring the exact weight that the vehicle can carry, which ensures there is no overloading. This increases the safety. INCREASED SAVINGS When you know exactly how much the goods being transported weigh, you can ensure that you are neither overloading nor under loading the truck, thus saving
fuel costs. Further, you would avoid overloading penalties and increase the lifespan of your truck, minimizing your investment in newer vehicles. All this results in increased savings. DIGITAL DISPLAYS These days a lot of on-board scales come with a digital display that remains on as long as the truck in on. You can set the set points ahead of time which will be displayed to the operator in case the truck is overloaded. The displays are tamper-proof ensuring safe results each time. The first two set points will give an indicator of red light. If the extra load isn’t removed even after that, there will be a buzzing sound which will continue till you remove the extra load. On-board truck scales are versatile, safe and convenient – making it essential for the transportation industry. Since weight is crucial in the trucking business, these scales ensure that your fleet runs legally at its optimum capacity. This helps in maximizing your profits and efficiency. Oil Filter Program from HUBB
H
UBB Filters demonstrated to fleet managers gathered at the NAFA 2018 Institute & Expo (I&E), how they can make an affordable, social impact by utilizing the company’s revolutionary, sustainable oil filter. HUBB CEO Scott Killips says sustainability often comes at a higher cost, but HUBB is both sustainable and costs less than a conventional filter. Killips says that HUBB equipped fleets enjoy increased oil drain intervals and decreased labor costs, while fulfilling their sustainability mission.
12 May 2018
“The first positive impact fleet managers will experience with HUBB filters is on the environment. Choosing our solution helps eliminate messy, used oil filters from going into landfills,” explained Killips. “The impact goes further because we can help a fleet save thousands on its preventive maintenance spend over a conventional, non-sustainable solution.” Allowing for even easier implementation of the HUBB oil filter on a fleet, the company will launch their new HUBB Swap Filter Exchange Program that allows vehicles to get in and out of the shop faster and easier during preventive maintenance. Technicians remove the soiled inner core and swap it for a clean inner core. The dirty inner core is sent to HUBB for inspection, cleaning and certification. HUBB then sends the clean filters back to the fleet. The HUBB solution is a significant improvement over conventional oil filtration technology, and its performance is backed by the industry’s first 100,000-mile or 5,000-hour guarantee. Fleet field results collected by HUBB along with independent oil analysis demonstrate that HUBB can save a typical fleet up to 50% on their
preventive maintenance spend, making it a win for your fleet and the earth.

TEREX UTILITIES
Terex Drills New Technology
T
erex Utilities has introduced a redesigned truck-mounted A65030 auger drill. The new auger drill series from Terex® features enhanced
control systems and a hydrostatic drive transmission for easier operation and productivity. Additionally, the remote diagnostics supports troubleshooting. “The A330 and A650 have radio remote controls – a first in auger drill operation,” says Joe Caywood, Director of Marketing. The new control system allows the truck, unit controller, and unit engine to talk to each other, which supports the application of radio remote controls. The advantage for the operator is improved productivity, comfort, and visual reference. The enhanced auger drills have many features that are automated, including auto brake release, inner-Kelly retract
stop, inner-Kelly slack stop, home position, return to center and dig depth. The ‘return to center’ allows the operator to return the auger to the drill position used previously. “This keeps the hole at the proper diameter and the proper vertical position throughout the dig, regardless of how many times the operator needs to clean the dirt from the auger tool,” said Gary Rice, Terex South Regional Sales Manager. The A650-30 features a drill depth of 30 ft. and drill diameter up to 72”. Terex Utilities will also be showcasing a variety of auger tooling – both augers and barrels – designed to dig through soft ground to the most extreme hard rock conditions with diameters ranging from 8” to 144”. ABRAMS TOWING SERVICES
Notes From Abrams Towing on the MidAmerica Trucking Show BY ROB KERBY
W
e were tasked with the job of researching transportation trade shows in the United States in order to target US trucking companies traveling to Ontario and to areas near this province’s borders. While there are plenty of carriers here, there is an overwhelming amount of freight shipped north of the border from all over the United States. This was a fertile market we wanted to explore. After months of deliberation we decided on the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky. It was a welcome reprieve to travel south after the winter we’ve had – the winter that never seems to end. We also decided to take one of our flagship heavy wreckers to enter in to the Show & Shine competition, partly to show off our equipment but also with the aim of attracting potential customers. Away we went. With trucks loaded with our gear and the Rotator gleaming we looked forward to nicer weather for our stay down south. Our first hiccup – there’s always a hiccup – was the Interstate 75 in Detroit which
was under construction. After what felt like a 70 KM detour through some of Detroit’s finest areas we finally reconnected with Interstate 75 and proceeded southbound. The rest of the trip down was uneventful until we entered Kentucky. Then it started snowing and by the time it ended Louisville, Kentucky had a fresh blanket of 11 inches of snow. Really? We came south for a truck show and we get buried in snow. So much for a clean and shiny truck, but we had a plan and had booked the truck for a wash for when we arrived just in case. After setting up our displays inside the show we redirected our attention to the Show & Shine area outside. Fortunately for us the guys shined up the Rotator and once again it looked great. Surrounding us at the show was an unbelievable display of chrome and custom paint. Anyone would be amazed, despite the 6 inches of snow blanketing the top of every truck. The venue was impressive if for nothing else than its sheer size. The front hall of the Kentucky Exposition Center approximates the size of the entire International Center in Toronto. It was exhausting to
tour the main hall and several others that meandered throughout the building, but there was so much to see we didn’t want to stop. The hospitality of the people from Kentucky was second to none, as it was from folks from all over who converged at this great event. We also ran into several people from our neck of the woods, some who have been coming here for years.
Hooray Canada! It was nice to witness support for the industry from home. Overall it was a fantastic show despite the obstacles, and we look forward to another great event next year at the MidAmerica Trucking Show. Thanks for your hospitality Kentucky! OPTRONICS INTERNATIONAL
Light Where You Need It
O
ptronics International, a leading manufacturer and supplier of heavy-duty LED vehicle lighting, announced the introduction of its new UCL41 Series Scene Light. The new lamp is the first of a new style of directional scene lighting that casts a more focused beam of LED light in a direction that can be accurately defined simply by its placement. Priced at roughly half the cost of traditional nine-diode scene lights, the UCL41 Series Scene Light uses 12 diodes and advanced optical engineering to focus its optimal beam pattern. Until now, scene lights have generally just flooded an area with illumination, without regard for how wide or deep the scene may be. The result of ultra-wide beam pattern scene lighting has been less focused and less usable light in the areas that may be most critical – those directly adjacent to the vehicle. Optronics’ new UCL41 Series Scene Light is engineered to deliver an intense white LED beam pattern at a 45-degree angle to its mounting position. The lamp enables OEMS, bodybuilders and end users to determine the size and shape of the scene they prefer to illuminate.
Mounting the lamp higher creates a larger scene, while mounting it lower creates a smaller scene, and the lamps can be rotated before mounting to deliver light that is oriented to a vehicle’s front, rear and sides. “Our new UCL41 Series Scene Light is the first to be engineered with the scene in mind,” Brett Johnson, president and CEO of Optronics International, said. “Our design enables the engineers and those using a vehicle to configure a custom lighting scenario that best fits the specific need.” The low-profile, surface-mount lamp is easy to install and requires only two mounting fasteners. Once the UCL41 is secured, a black- or chrome-coated plastic bezel snaps into position, giving the lamp a clean finished appearance. The UCL41 Series Scene Light accommodates both 12- and 24-volt electrical systems and is IP67 rated. The lamp comes complete with a 6-inch hard-wired lead and ground wires and requires only a three-quarter-inch hole for the wire feed. For more information visit www. optronics.com.

ebasto Thermo & Comfort, the global leader in equipment and vehicle cooling and heating solutions, has introduced its new SP80 HVAC. The low-profile, ceilingmounted HVAC will make it possible for OEMs and cabin manufacturers to design vehicle-control spaces with increased headroom, greater visibility and an enhanced sense of comfort. In contrast to the large, sharp-edged, rectangular sheet-metal boxes that characterize the majority of ceilingmounted HVAC systems in today’s heavy equipment, Webasto’s new SP80 HVAC looks somewhat inconspicuous. At 50 percent the size and 20 percent the weight of average HVAC systems, SP80 hugs a cabin’s ceiling. The unit’s 3.15-inch-thick injectionm o l d e d
plastic envelope features rounded edges and a unique central air intake configuration that allows air outlets to be precisely oriented to fit a cab’s particular design. Its 25.03-inch width and 20.39inch length will also make the unit easy to integrate into any cab design. “Design engineers will be able to create cabins with far greater comfort, visibility and overall space,” Mark Denny, President and CEO of Webasto Thermo & Comfort North America, said. “The SP80’s ergonomic advantages are matched by its ultra-light weight, enabling cab roof structures to be lighter as well.” To access more content about the lowprofile, ceiling-mounted SP80 HVAC, visit: www.webasto.com/us/marketsproducts/off-highway/ custom-hvacsolutions.

Important Truck Systems
W
hile the basic platform on trucks has remained somewhat the same, all of the important systems that allow trucks to operate efficiently and safely are constantly changing. It used to be that the driver was in control but as we move to more autonomous trucks the role of the driver is evolving. Drivers it seems, are now more systems managers than they are drivers so it is important to understand how these various systems function. Cooling systems, air conditioning, and emission controls have been around in one form or another and to get the most benefit we need to understand how they operate. Cooling systems used to be easy. If a needle on a gauge ran into the red or if steam was blowing out of your engine you could be pretty sure that there was a problem. Now with diagnostic systems and preset maintenance schedules it can sometimes be difficult to understand what is going on. While the needle and the steam are time-tested and true warnings drivers can’t wait until that point with the cooling system. Keeping on top of maintenance and vehicle specific training of drivers is key to keeping the
engine running. The engine is cool, what about the driver? At one time the air conditioning system was a crank on the door that opened the window. Once trucks started to be equipped with proper air conditioning systems the challenge was to balance driver comfort with fuel costs. While driver comfort is the priority, the costs of running an engine all night can be high and can be offset by adding another temperature control system. Auxiliary power units, generators, or even a shore power system will surely help reduce your fuel costs. There is no “one size fits all” solution and your equipment suppliers are a good place to look for information. Emission systems are complex and expensive. I remember the day when people pulled the catalytic converters off of their cars and enlarged the size of the fuel fillers to allow for leaded fuel to still be used. Why? Unleaded fuel was expensive and we didn’t fully understand the need to control vehicle emissions. Much has been written about the need for proper emission systems and with the addition of diesel exhaust fluid systems drivers need to add DEF top-ups to their vehicle checks. Did you know that DEF freezes
at -11 C°? DEF is another example of how trucks are changing. Canada has an extreme climate and regardless of the season engines need to be kept cool and drivers need to be comfortable in warmer weather. With proper driver training and adherence to maintenance schedules cooling systems, air conditioning, and emissions systems
can work well for us to improve efficiency and driver satisfaction. Tires & Wheels
By Jeffrey Parks, Managing Director, Retread Tire Association
A Young Person’s Look at Retreading
I
f you’re a young person working on developing your trade, your career or your craft, you may have insight to offer others that you aren’t quite aware of. We were fortunate to meet a young representative of a great retreading equipment company Tesco-Italmatic LLC, who at 24 years old, is proud to be working in the industry as a 3rd generation member of his family’s company. D.J. Zeledon gave us a nice interview this week and shared some of his views on the future of the industry, and we’d like to share them with you. RTA: Many would say retreading is poised for a much bigger resurgence that it has in the past. What do you see as a young person who is trying to build a career out of this? D.J. (Tesco Italmatic): I see a lot more opportunities coming up on the retreading side. In my opinion, today’s retreads
are safer, if not better than some of the new tires that are on the road. People see things online, and they see tires and tread lying on the road and they automatically blame it on retreads. Retreaders understand that, and it’s why retreaders take a more stringent look at the tests they do, and they go above and beyond to make a retread safer and a more costeffective tire. RTA: You represent the third generation in your family’s business. When did you start picking up an interest in it? D.J.: My dad and grandpa always brought me into the shop. Ever since I can remember around four years old or so, I would go in and sit on my grandpa‘s lap or my dad’s, and drive the forklift with him. As a kid I would sweep the floor and after a while, you start earning your stripes. You start from a young age and I kind of grew up in the shop. When
I was around thirteen, I started messing with hydraulics and learning about lifts a little bit. I’d go in on weekends and scrape down the old paint on chambers, sanding it down and repainting. But I’ve come to be fully invested in it. On the business side, eventually my dad started to put my face out there more, and now I have customers calling me directly with TPMS or tire repair problems and questions. Sometimes even in the evening, but I like them to be calling me as a resource. I want to be seen that way, as someone you can purchase from, and follow up with. I’m involved in the sales of some tire machinery, balancers and TPMS equipment. I’m not involved in the big stuff as much as of yet, but I’m still learning of course and you know you never stop learning and everything comes in due time.
RTA: You seem to be more aware and involved in the environmental side of things. That’s a big component of what we do in the tire retreading industry. D.J.: Yes. My father and I are outdoorsmen, and we appreciate the fact that we only have one planet. We know the problems with dumping tires here in Florida where I live. Our company is aware of what it takes to prevent that from happening, and by selling and servicing retread equipment, we feel like we’re part of the solution. All around, Tesco-Italmatic has been growing and looking to the future. One thing that I would tell my kids that I learned from my dad is that you have to enjoy what you do. If you enjoy what you do it’s never a day of work. It’s a passion going in to work and doing a great job.

The new BFGoodrich Cross Control tire line is designed to combat damage and downtime with features that include: thick sidewalls to resist damage from impacts; heat-release compounds to help reduce internal casing temperatures; a full-protector ply, which is 75 percent wider than a leading competitor, to pro-
vide protection from penetrations and road hazards even past the outer grooves and anti-cut and chip resistance to help prevent damage that can take a tire prematurely out of service. In fact, the BFGoodrich Cross Control S (all-terrain steer/all-position) tire is guaranteed to provide 20 percent more mileage on the wide-base iteration of the BFGoodrich Cross Control S than with the BFGoodrich® ST565TM wide-base tire. The serrated shoulder with staggered
rib blocks assist with maneuverability in soft soils and snow conditions. The aggressive ribbed tread design provides traction in challenging conditions without sacrificing handling or ride comfort. The BFGoodrich Cross Control S tire is available in sizes 11R22.5 and 11R24.5 (Load Range H), 315/80R22.5 (Load Range L), and starting in May 2018 will be available in sizes 385/65R22.5 (Load Range J) and 425/65R22.5 (Load Range L). The new BFGoodrich Cross Control D, an all-terrain drive tire, offers many of the same features as its steer counterpart. Built for traction, it is designed with 25 percent more lugs on the road to grip snow, mud and dirt2. A 75 percent wider protector ply3 than a leading competitor provides greater protection from road hazards and penetrations, which can leave fleets and owner-operators on the side of the road encountering unexpected downtime. The BFGoodrich Cross Control D tire is available in 11R22.5 and 11R24.5 sizes (Load Range H). Confident in the Cross Control’s downtime-fighting durability and increased mileage, BFGoodrich offers a work-hard guarantee for the products. Fairview Fittings & Manufacturing
Growing Repair Kit Options for Trucks Save Time, Money & More
I
n a recent episode of a popular trucking show filmed over the dead of winter in the great Canadian north, one of the drivers bottoms out his truck on a large rock and tears a drain plug out of an air tank. As he quickly loses air pressure and his wheels begin to lock up, the realization sets in that he is in the middle of nowhere, without the repair parts he needs and with no radio or cell phone signal to call for help. The temperature is dropping quickly and what would have amounted to a time consuming, costly inconvenience on a main highway, will soon become a matter of life and death. Luckily for our stranded trucker, another big rig driver happens by a few hours later with a Fairview “Air Brake Fitting Repair Kit” containing the simple ¼” pipe plug needed to save the day. More of these smart, inexpensive and easy to store repair kits, like Fairview’s “Air Brake Fitting Repair Kit,” are
becoming available every day. New pushto-connect technology makes it possible to make many tube repairs without any tools at all and hose end repair kits now allow for r o a d s i d e repair of air
brake hoses with just an included Allen Wrench. Metal hose end repair kits, like the ones manufactured by Fairview, meet or exceed the pull and pressure specifications of the original crimped-on h o s e
ends and result in a hose just as safe and reliable as those that were factory installed. Every good pre-trip plan should include resources to help locate repair shops on the route and a roadside assistance strategy in case of major electronic or mechanical failure. Every cab should also be outfitted with as many safety supplies, tools and repair parts as practical. Breakdowns are a costly, time consuming fact of life for truckers. But keeping up with the newest roadside DIY repair options gets trucks back on the road faster, reducing downtime and driver stress while saving money. And in the case of extreme routes, like those of the ice road truckers, a good repair kit can save a stranded driver even more. Fairview emergency roadside and shop repair kits are available at major heavyduty truck parts stores across Canada and in the United States.

SERVICE & MAINTENANCE: PETERSON MANUFACTURING COMPANY
Pulse Intelligent Trailer System
G
randview, Montana – Peterson thinks it’s time that fleet trailers got as smart as today’s hightech trucks, and is proud to introduce its patented PetersonPULSE™ intelligent trailer system. PULSE is the unique trailer solution that brings CAN-Bus technology and telematic capability to trailers. Engineered specifically for fleet trailers, PULSE not only controls and detects real-time status of vital trailer systems – lights, ABS brakes, tire pressure, cargo temperature, and more – but also alerts drivers and fleet managers via Bluetooth and cellular communications. “PULSE brings trailers up to speed with today’s smartest trucks,” said Peterson’s Director of Engineering, Cory Adams. “By signaling trailer issues as they happen, PULSE enhances the safety of driver and cargo, and helps avoid road incidents, CSA violations, and costly fines.”
Peterson developed PULSE in partnership with industry leaders in TPMS/ABS and telematic technology. The system features Peterson’s LumenX LED lighting package and the harness-building expertise of the company’s Maxi-Seal division. PetersonPULSE is engineered to CANBus specifications, with high-speed, twisted-pair communication wires and sensors installed throughout the trailer. All components are fully sealed, vibration tested, and built for long life. Compared to the heavy, multi-wire cabling of traditional harnesses, PULSE twisted-pair cabling is lighter weight, flexible, and installation friendly. The PULSE cabling links front and rear control modules, system sensors, and communication components – just like computers in a network. “It’s like an information super highway,” Adams said. “Whether a trailer is parked or underway, PULSE enables real-time monitoring of

Tractor-Trailer Power Check
P
hillips Industries has introduced the QWIK-CHECK, developed for quick and easy confirmation of power within the seven-way connection between the tractor and trailer. Designed for integration into the electrical system of the nosebox, it eliminates the immediate need for a continuity tester, visually confirming an electrical signal from the tractor to the trailer. With the tractor turned on, and power supplied to the seven-way connection, the color-coded LED lights of the QWIKCHECK will light up as each circuit receives power. Each light is an indication that power to the correlating circuit is

reaching the seven-way connection. If a light does not come on, it indicates that there is a problem with the associated circuit and further investigation is warranted. The QWIK-CHECK is currently offered for universal installation on any nosebox or as a readily available replacement for units already installed on the i-BOX or VOLT-BOX noseboxes. The universal unit comes with 12-inch blunt cut wires and ring terminals to customize the installation. Replacement units come with wires pre-cut to length and ring terminals already installed. all trailer systems – anytime, anywhere. There’s even a backup battery to power the system whether or not the trailer is connected to the tractor.” With a mobile device, a driver can do pre-trip walk-around inspections to check for issues with any trailer system – a “Know Before You Go” safeguard. On the road, PULSE’s trailer intelligence detects any issues and sends alerts via Bluetooth to the driver’s smart phone
or tablet. Alerts can also be sent to fleet managers via a cellular network. “PetersonPULSE makes fleet trailers as smart – and safe – as today’s new trucks,” said Steve Meagher, Peterson Vice President-Sales. “It’s intelligence that allows fleets to truly manage and protect their equipment and the cargo it carries. And it’s all USA-made and ready to go today.” For more information visit www.pmlights.com.

Winning the Leverage Lottery
O
ver the decades I’ve seen capacity ebb and flow, but nothing compares to January when millions of truck miles just evaporated into thin air. Sure, the goofy weather and booming economy contributed to the capacity crunch. But ELDs were the main culprit. It was like the industry’s lucky numbers fell one by one from the hopper for the “Leverage Lottery.” For the first time, customers en masse were practically begging carriers to move shipments before asking for a price. It was great seeing truckers take advantage of this windfall. Small, transactional carriers not bound by customer contracts really cashed in as spot rates doubled or even tripled. The only thing limiting their success was the ability (or lack of ability) to fill driver seats. The capacity crunch also gave Canadian domestic carriers a chance to observe as they prepare for an ELD mandate in 2020.
Leverage is a powerful tool, and truckers could walk from any deal because there were better deals from which to choose. But even lottery winners go belly up. Here’s how to make the most of your leverage while you have it. CONTRACT COMMITMENTS The first quarter was tricky for carriers bound by customer contracts. I heard lots of complaining about “having to move shipments” for half the price of what was being offered on the open market. Contracts may have stung in the short term, but those committed customers have long-term value. Now is not the time to gouge them. But you can use your leverage to negotiate better terms. In particular, I would focus on two things: strength of commitment, and annual rate increases. Almost every contract I’ve seen allows shippers to walk away with little or no penalty. That is nuts. Your customers have more of a commitment to a lease
on a $10,000 copier than the $4 million in equipment you provide. Contracts must lock them in: a three-year deal is a threeyear deal – or pay up! It’s also time to consider ending the lifetime rate shippers enjoy year after year. Something is seriously wrong if you can’t get a 3% annual cost of living increase from a customer. OUT TO PASTURE Few things irk me more than the godawful fuel surcharge. Franky, I believe that high fuel surcharges have helped brand our industry as weak and unsophisticated. It’s time to put this system out to pasture. When quoting a customer, I suggest you blend the current price of fuel into your rates. Creating a new ground-zero will permanently increase the base rates while keeping surcharges at a more manageable level. If fuel prices go down, you win. If they go up, you have a provision in your contract to cover the shortfall. Remember, leverage is powerful. REVENUE LEAKS Think of all the freebies we’ve given to customers over the years. My all-time favorite is what the industry has coined “spotting a trailer”. Let’s call it what it is: free mobile warehousing. We could be the only industry that gives customers $70,000 assets to use at their conven-
ience. When I owned MSM Transportation, these “revenue leaks” bugged me so much that one year I went on a bender and plugged all the giveaways I could find. When the dust settled we were collecting every charge we were owed by customers. This added close to $700,000 to our bottom line. It was like picking up $7 million in revenue without having to find nary a driver. GROWING THE FLEET With all this leverage, my focus would be on growing the size of my bottom line and not the size of my fleet. But if you can get drivers it would be a mistake not to look at opportunities to grow with best-in-class customers – the ones who actually get it. What about the bad customers? You know the ones who don’t let drivers use their bathroom? Good luck moving your freight pal. A 33year industry veteran, Mike founded MSM Transportation, which he sold in 2012. He can be reached at mike@leftlaneassociates.ca, 844.311.7335, or @AceMcC on Twitter.

Off-Highway Engine Idling: Why it Should Factor into Your Lubricant Choice
O
ff-highway vehicles face challenges unique to their sectors, for example, near 24 hours, seven day a week operations, and dirty, muddy environments. Moreover, unplanned downtime in operations can cause disruption and make a significant difference to a business’s bottom line. Reliability, efficiency and safety are therefore of paramount importance to ensure a smooth operation, even in the most extreme of conditions. For fleet managers in these environments, it’s important to consider all the factors affecting equipment reliability and fuel efficiency, including the impact that prolonged engine idling can have on heavy duty engines. A FOCUS ON ENGINE IDLING Off-highway engines spend a considerable amount of time idling - with manufacturer Komatsu estimating that a construction machine’s average idle time is 40 percent. However, it can be assumed that this will vary fleet to fleet - with some idling significantly more. Having a detrimental impact on the engine, one hour of idling is the same as driving approximately 40 kilometers. This impacts the combustion process and increases the likelihood of the oil temperature dropping below 100ºC, which can result in the buildup of water, ingression of fuel and increased acids formation in the oil, ultimately accelerating engine wear. In addition, engine idling also uses con-
24 May 2018
siderable fuel - one of the largest expenses for fleet managers. It is estimated that a large diesel engine can consume up to 4 litres of fuel for each hour it is left idling. So how can lubricant selection help protect an idling engine? ROLE OF HEAVY DUTY ENGINE LUBRICANTS Lubricants protect the engine, and help optimize its performance and efficiency over its useful life. It does this by minimizing metal-to-metal contact between moving components while reducing pumping and spinning losses. For heavy duty industries, such as construction and mining, API CK-4 oils are particularly relevant. They offer improved resistance to oxidation and aeration, as well as increased shear stability. Improved aeration control is important to note for off-highway engines as in these environments there is more potential for air to become entrained within the oil. This can be dangerous at the bearings, where maintaining a suitable oil film is critical to protect them. Also, with a lower viscosity at lower temperatures, API CK-4 SAE 10W-30 and 5W-40 can move more easily through the engine and flow faster. This helps prevent engine wear at vehicle start-up, an essential benefit as idling reduces the work rate of the engine, so it’s important to use oil with a good low flow temperature. Selecting oil that can neutralize any acid that builds up during prolonged periods of idling is also recommended. The oil speci-
fied should therefore be able to maintain its Base Number. Combining these key criteria will allow for heavy duty equipment engines to be protected and help improve vehicle reliability while reducing unplanned downtime. Before selecting a product, lubricant choice should always be based on the OEM recommendations as outlined in the owner’s manual. MONITORING AND ANALYSIS Incorporating a used oil analysis program into the maintenance schedule of vehicles that idle regularly can also present many benefits. For example, the analysis can highlight if the oil should be changed earlier than normal and bring to attention maintenance issues before they become serious and expensive to repair. These programs can also be used to extend oil drain intervals; however, this should always be supported by recommendations from the OEM manual and advice from technical experts. A three-step process, oil analysis typically involves: taking a representative sample
from the vehicle, sending the sample to a qualified used oil analysis laboratory, and interpreting/acting upon the recommendations of the results. This is most effective when performed at regular intervals, as it allows vehicle specific trends to be identified and measured over time. It also provides time for maintenance plans to be adjusted in advance, meaning that it can coincide with any scheduled downtime. Off-highway vehicles operate in unique and tough environments that demand reliability and efficiency. Selecting a heavy duty engine lubricant that can perform under these conditions, and offer protection required for an engine that spends considerable time idling, means that fleet managers can benefit from enhanced engine protection, increased uptime and reduced unplanned downtime. This provides the fleet administrator or manager with the ability to better manage the lifecycle of tires, tracking the current status as well as the history of each tire in the fleet based on its serial number. “The Rhombus TireAnalytics 2.0 platform is a great example of the successful digital transformation of Dana, with our continued strategic focus on the customer,” said Mark Wallace, President of Dana Commercial Driveline Technologies. “Our team listened to our customers
and upgraded the platform in many ways to enhance the robustness of information the platform provides while also making
it more user friendly.” For more information, visit www.rhombusanalytics.com.

NEW PARTS & COMPONENTS: DANA INCORPORATED
New Dana Axle for Severe Service Vehicles
D
ana Incorporated (NYSE: DAN) is pleased to announce the launch of the new Spicer® D172 series heavy-duty tandem axle for construction, heavy-haul, and severe service applications. The D172 is the latest example of Dana’s commitment to maximizing fleet uptime with lightweight but durable, reliable, and efficient product offerings. The new axle is more than 60 pounds lighter than existing D170 series tandem axles. It builds upon Dana’s existing, market-leading heavy-duty product by offering a broad range of gear ratios, from 3.07 to 6.14, to serve a variety of needs. Wide-face, High-Power Density™ AdvanTEK® gearing maximizes strength while reducing weight. In addition, a reliable, passive lube management system requires less lube while using a patented
meter to optimize the amount of lube flow to the high-efficiency bearings. “Dana prides itself on our history of providing innovative, durable products
for all commercialv e h i c l e markets,” said Mark Wallace, President of Dana Commercial Driveline Technologies. “We listened to the needs of fleet professionals and vehicle manufacturers in developing
this new tandem axle, which features a number of technologies that set new performance benchmarks
in the industry. Our goal is to help our customers maximize uptime and gain efficiencies.” Dana also added its new Spicer® S172 series single drive axle for Class 7 and 8 vehicles. The new product retains the robustness and strength of the existing S170 single drive axle, but weighs more
than 60 pounds less. It is yet another example of Dana’s commitment to optimizing fleet uptime with lightweight but durable product offerings. The axle is crafted for 4x2, 6x2, and 8x2 applications up to 25,000 lbs. (11,340 kg) GAWR. It offers a broad range of gear ratios, from 3.07 to 6.14, and features a low hypoid offset with High-Power Density™ AdvanTEK® gearing to drive maximum efficiency. The high-strength pinion bearings allow for greater lifespan under heavy loads, improving durability and overall performance. In addition, a passive lube management system requires less lube while utilizing a patented meter to optimize the amount of lube flow to the high-efficiency bearings. Women In Trucking
By Ellen Voie
Showing Appreciation…
“T
hose who have the ability to be grateful are the ones who have the ability to achieve greatness,” Steve Maraboli, Life, the Truth, and Being Free. When was the last time you received a hand written thank you note, or a card just to let you know someone was thinking of you? If you’re like most people, it’s probably been too long. When was the last time you wrote a thank you note? If you know me personally, you’ll know that I am a firm believer in writing thank you notes. Apparently, I instilled that same conviction in my children, as the thank you notes from both my son and daughter are sure to follow a gift, party or act of kindness. I keep them to remind myself of the good times we shared. Most people use the excuse that they either don’t have the materials handy or they don’t have the time to write out and mail a thank you note. Both excuses are just a reflection of your priorities. Keep notes, pens
and stamps in plain sight so you can take a moment to send your thoughts without much effort. What’s more fun than receiving a note or card after a long day in the office or a difficult day at school. A note is something tangible that reminds you that the sender is thinking of you. One young woman kept every card her mother had sent her after she left home. Later, she used them as decorations at her wedding by cutting hundreds of little hearts out of the cards and spreading them across the banquet tables. The groom explained to the family and friends that the decorations were the result of over 100 cards his new mother-in-law had sent to his new wife. We were all taught to say thank you and to acknowledge kindness, but it seems that civility has been replaced by self-centeredness. We refuse to show our appreciation to someone because THEY haven’t shown appreciation to us! Where does it begin? Perhaps with you!
If you’ve been reading this blog you’ll know about the campaign of #SteeringTowardKindness. At Women In Trucking Association we make it a priority to showcase acts of kindness by our members. From sharing home cooked meals (truck cooked meals?) with strangers, to paying for a shower for a homeless person or even offering money for a ride home, professional drivers are some of the kindest, most generous people I’ve ever met. However, drivers are also some of the most under-appreciated folks as well. Delivering a load on time doesn’t win any favors, but if you miss your appointment you’ll hear about it. Keeping your truck in top shape is expected, but if a tail light is out on the trailer, you will be penalized. Do we really need to wait for a week in August to honor our professional drivers for their hard work? Author Gregory Smith asked respondents to list their greatest dissatisfaction at work for his book, Here Today, Here Tomorrow, found the top answer to be a lack of appre-
ciation. Yet, when companies make an effort to show their gratitude, sales are increased, productivity is raised and happiness is positively affected by employees. Seems pretty simple, doesn’t it? How can you help us in our efforts at #SteeringTowardKindness? Share your stories with us. Send someone a note or a card and watch his or her reaction. Stick a post it note where they’ll be sure to see it. Pay for the meal of the person behind you at the fast food restaurant. Donate to a worthy cause in someone else’s name. Leave a generous tip. What can you do to show your appreciation? Check out www.randomactsofkindness.org for ideas and then share them with us on the Women In Trucking Association Facebook page. We’ll share them and spread the good vibes. By the way, the young woman who saved her mother’s cards and cut them into hearts for her wedding was my daughter. To this day it gives me overwhelming feelings of being appreciated.

looming Prairie, Minnesota In an effort to keep up with demand, Minimizer has released Custom Molded Floor Mats that fit the new Freightliner Cascadia 116 and 126. “Cascadias are among the most popular trucks on the road, and with Freightliner releasing these two new models in 2018, we have our bases covered,” Minimizer CEO and Chief Visionary Craig Kruckeberg said. Whether you drive a truck, car, motorcycle, or boat, you know that its performance and mileage varies based on fuel type, so why would you expect your body to be any different? What we eat is literally what allows us to function; anything you eat is broken down into energy, with certain foods providing more energy and health benefits than others. So if you’re eating heavily processed foods that lack in nutrients (think energy drinks, cookies, fried food, etc.) how can you expect that your body will function properly? Hint: you can’t, and it won’t. These poor quality foods may give you an initial feeling of energy or satisfaction, as many of them result in the release of feel-good hormones such as dopamine and serotonin. This hormone release is what causes food addiction, but that’s another topic of discussion. What I want you to focus on is the feeling you get long after the initial buzz wears off – after your blood sugar crashes and the caffeine wears off. How do you feel then? I can guarantee it’s not very good, because that’s when you find yourself starving, tired, cranky, and maybe even bloated or gassy. All from a little junk food you thought you needed. And how did your body actually benefit, long term? Did it receive the proper nutrients (vitamin C, iron, B vitamins, antioxidants…) needed to thrive and repair itself? Nope. Instead it was burdened by your choice and forced to filter out what it can’t use (think preservatives, artificial flavors and colors). We know higher quality fuel is more expensive, so is there a cost to this higher quality food? Many like to argue that healthy food costs more, but after a short while you’ll quickly see that isn’t the case. Don’t think that you need to be buying all organic produce, fancy shakes and expensive bars. Get back to the basics: • Fruit and vegetables (fresh or frozen, whatever is on sale is just fine) • Smaller portions of meat (no, you don’t need to be eating two chicken breasts for dinner every day; this is where many people throw money away) • Dried or canned beans, rice, oats, grains, etc. to add bulk and nutrition to your meals – it doesn’t get more affordable than these! • Water to drink (if you’re concerned
about money, why are you spending it on pop, juice, drive-thru coffee, alcohol, etc.?) These building blocks are what your body craves. They will allow your body to perform efficiently, provide you with plenty of energy, and keep you as healthy as possible. This doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in your favorite treats here and there, but your diet needs to be primarily high quality, nutrient dense foods, or else
you’ll slowly become more run-down and unhealthy as the years pass. Start paying attention to the QUALITY of your food, and start looking at it as fuel that can either hinder or enhance the way you look, feel, and perform.
T h i s s i m p l e mindset shift can take your body from feeling like a rusty, sputtering Oldsmobile to a shiny new Mercedes running on premium.

hen people drop in we may ask, how can we help today. Often responses are surprising. We proceed to try and create a comfortable atmosphere. Sometimes to their own surprise, people open up and literally pour out their heart. It could be family matters, health or even financial issues. We get interesting responses, when we ask what is the most significant thing happening in your life right now? Once again we listen with very thoughtful responses. Often finish with a thank you for helping, when all we were able to do is listen and finish with a prayer to all mighty God. The question we may ask is, could you tell me what God is doing in your life. The person may respond, “I really don`t have a relationship with God. But the last while I have had problems with my teenager, I sure have been thinking about it.” Or when I was a kid I used to go to Sunday school. My mother and dad made me
go. I got away from it, but the financial problems we are under, has really caused me to think about this. These statements sound like God may be at work in the person’s life. He may be drawing the person to Himself, causing the person to seek after God, or bringing convection of sin. As we travel down life’s toll road, much goes on in our mind. Often we look for a better way, more trouble free and peaceful. There is a more peaceful way, no not totally trouble free. Even the One Who died on the cross had a rough go. But He, did it all for each one of us. That’s one reason we have verses like John 3:16, For God so loved the World that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Plus we have I John 1:9, If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Make sure you take the right exit.

NEW PARTS & COMPONENTS: FONTAINE FIFTH WHEEL
Severe Duty Fifth Wheel
F
ontaine Fifth Wheel announces a new top plate designed specifically for severe-duty applications: the Fontaine H7. This top plate replaces the H5092 and X5092 Series and combines it into one fifth wheel system. Like the 7000 Series the H7 features a cast steel housing and the Fontaine No-Slack® locking system, the only trigger activated self-adjusting locking mechanism in the industry. This Fontaine exclusive offers several advantages to their customers. The fifth wheel lock self-adjusts in order to accommodate for wear and for varia-
tions in kingpin geometry. This means drivers get a snug, secure hassle-free connection as they move from trailer to trailer. The design also reduces shock inputs into the frame when braking and accelerating; so drivers get a smoother ride and components last longer for lower maintenance costs. “Our mission with the H7 was to simplify our severe duty product line into one cast steel fifth wheel system that uses our most up to date No-Slack® locking system,” stated Mike Randolph, VP Sales & Marketing North America. “The beauty of the H7 fifth
wheel is that it offers a majority of the same working parts that
you find in our current No-Slack® 6000 and 7000 series top plates so the need to keep additional replacement parts in field will be greatly reduced,” stated Paige Petroni, VP Aftermarket. The Fontaine H7 is rated up to 70,000 lbs vertical load, a drawbar pull rating up to 200,000 lbs and has the option of being blocked (no-tilt) from the factory. It’s a great solution for logging, heavy haul, oil field, mining and other severe-duty applications. For more information, visit www.fifthwheel.com.

STEMCO PRODUCTS INC.
New TrailerTail Automatic Fuel Saving Technology
S
TEMCO Products Inc. has announced a new aerodynamic product, the TrailerTail® Automatic fuel-saving system. This newest version of the signature TrailerTail deploys automatically when the trailer reaches 35 mph, ensuring fuel savings on every trip and removing the need for the driver to get out of the cab to open it manually. The Automatic system also closes the TrailerTail when the truck stops or goes
in reverse, preventing damage to the TrailerTail, trailer or dock doors. Closing the TrailerTail only when the vehicle comes to a full stop reduces the number of cycles the unit has to go through, minimizing component wear and tear. Also, if the trailer loses power, the TrailerTail will automatically close, allowing access to the cargo. The STEMCO TrailerTail improves fuel economy by streamlining airflow at the
back of the trailer to reduce rear drag and increase fuel efficiency. It also improves safety by helping to stabilize trailers and increase visibility for drivers. The TrailerTail Automatic receives reliable speed and direction signals from STEMCO’s wheel-mounted TracBat Aero speed sensor. The TracBat Aero is based on the existing STEMCO DataTrac & TracBat electronic hubodometers which are used extensively by fleets. The ac-
curacy, reliability and durability of the TracBat has been proven by thousands of units on the roads covering millions of miles over the last 10 years. The new TrailerTail Automatic will be available in Q3 of 2018. It will be compatible with new trailers and also as a retrofit for existing TrailerTail Trident models. companies all over the United States for seven years before she got her CDL. Why the drastic career change? She says, “The economy forced me to find a recessionproof career.” Melissa has been serving her country as an over-the-road truck driver for the past four years. However, driving isn’t the only thing she does. She has recently invented a product to solve a problem in the trucking industry. Melissa repeatedly became frustrated when the fuel nozzle kept falling out of the tanks during fueling. She asked around and realized other drivers had the same problem. So, she came up with a solution. Melissa invented a fueling brace that holds
the nozzle secure in the tank during fueling. She has already made prototypes and began the patent process for a brace that fits the Freightliner Cascadia Evolution. More information about the fueling brace can be found at www.FuelingBrace.com. Melissa urges women to not only live their lives to the fullest, but also make a positive impact on the world around us. The Women In Trucking Association, Inc. is a non-profit association established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry. EMERGENCY RESPONSE ASSISTANCE CANADA [ERAC]
Emergency Preparedness: Are You Protected?
E
very day, LPG and flammable liquids are hauled by road. With the forecasted increase in volumes, as well as the slow state of pipeline growth in Canada, this fact will hold true well in to the future. Government regulations around the transport of these products continue to evolve, and shippers’ responsibilities for emergency preparedness and response are shifting accordingly. WHERE IT ALL STARTED Government regulations significantly changed in 2013 after the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster. Transport Canada implemented requirements for rail shippers to have an emergency response assistance plan (ERAP) for flammable liquids, in addition to already regulated dangerous goods. With this change, Transport Canada also requires all flammable liquids ERAP holders to provide firefighting foam and equipment, and technical advice, to first responders on scene as needed. Thus began the trend of shifting more of the responsibility for emergency response to the shippers of these dangerous goods. OPERATING IN OR THROUGH B.C.? Last year, British Columbia released a new set of regulations on spill contingency planning, applicable to transporters of 10,000 litres or more of liquid petroleum products by rail, pipeline and highway. Shippers must plan now to have the appropriate emergency response plans in place for the October 2018 deadline. While B.C. is the first province to release more stringent spill response regulations, it is to the benefit of shippers and carriers to be proactive in dangerous goods emergency preparedness and response. SOLUTION IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK You may not be in the business of
tingency plans. Our plans meet or exceed all federal and provincial regulations. The annual membership cost includes emergency response to incidents, with access to our network of response teams, equipment caches, fire suppression trailers and foam. Additionally, ERAC assists with the development and execution of mandatory annual drills and exercises for our plan members. ERAC also provides specialized LPG training for municipal firefighters, which can be done on-site at a fire hall with ERAC’s LPG prop trailers and NFPA-qualified instructors. Life safety cannot be compromised. ERAC has a clean record, never having had an injury or fatality related to its management of emergency responses. Keeping Your Vehicles Clean
By Jack Jackson
Collecting Rain Water to Wash Trucks
T
here is a push towards washing your vehicles and recycling your water. Not only is it becoming mandatory across many Provinces and States, most feel it is the right thing to do. How about Rainwater Harvesting? That is probably a new term you are not used to seeing in vehicle washing. Did you know that 99.4% of the water on the earth is in the ocean or ice cap/ glaciers? That means only 0.6% of the water available is fresh water in lakes, streams, rain and ground water. This is the amount left to sustain the 7 billion people on the earth. We are fortunate in the Great Lakes area to not seem to worry about the resources within our reach to tap into this supply. In many parts of North America, it’s not that simple. Thus, this issue of water recycling is continually increasing in the minds of people. If you are on a well system, it can become necessary to lengthen the life of the well water. Also, it becomes a difficult decision on where to allow the gray water
38 May 2018
to drain. Many companies in the rural areas are now getting creative and collecting rain water to wash their vehicles. We hear customers say, “I don’t pay for water, so not to worry.” We all know that eventually there will be an issue, just may not be while you are the employee of that location that you need to worry today. If you are on the city water grid, there are other issues to consider. The cost of water is continually increasing beyond the inflation rate. Politicians have easily figured out this user fee system on water in and water out to be charged to the
customer is an easy process with little resistance. What company would actually complain that this is an unfair practice? The first thought I always recommend is, reduce water intake thus reduces water outtake, which reduces the problem in the first place. It’s simple, less in means less issue to deal with. Using a ¾” water hose for an hour of washing a vehicle will use over 1,000 gallons of water. How do you stop that? Simple, use less water and less time to wash is where we start the analysis. Automated systems start as low as 2.5 gallons of water per minute and as high as hundreds of gallons per minute. Some systems can wash in less than 2 minutes to 5 minutes. We can help you figure out what best suits your needs. Common sense says, even if you recycle your water, less in costs less to process. In all situations, water per minute should be your standard to measure you desires. I have seen the cost of water as high as $0.04/gallon of water charged by cities. If
you do the math, that is $320.00 per day if you used the water hose for a straight 8 hours. Over $100K per year of strictly water costs. There is a very economical and environmental solution to this overwhelming expense. That easy solution is catching rain water and storing it for water usage. It is a very simple and low cost procedure. You can have a 1,000 gallon storage tank, or more, and collect distilled, mineral free water that will not spot or etch. There are many systems available on the internet or with your local water supply companies. If you do the math on the costs of water today and the cost of installing a Rainwater Harvest System, you will see the ROI and understand the benefits.
