he campaign to attract more women to the Canadian trucking industry now has its most visible promotion yet. The Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada (WTFC) recently unveiled a 2019 Western Star 5700XE with a promotional wrap featuring the organization’s name and pictures of its members. The 5700XE model, which is owned by Sharp Transportation Systems, has been named “Miss Destiny Star” by company driver Shelley Uvanille-Hesch, founder of the WTFC and a tireless champion of women in the trucking industry. “I will be driving this truck across Canada and into the United States and I know everyone who sees it will be a little more aware that women do work in trucking and that it’s an industry that can provide a good living for them,” UvanilleHesch said. Several years ago, she contacted Western Star to ask for the company’s support of the WTFC. Since then, Western Star has been a corporate member of the organization and funded the truck wrap. The WTFC has worked closely with the group at Highway Western Star in Ayr, Ontario, the dealership where the 5700XE was purchased. “The Women’s Trucking Federation is doing great work,” a representative from Highway Western Star said. “The trucking industry needs to attract more women and help the women already in the business. We’re proud to be associated with the organization and glad we had the opportunity to assist with this new truck purchase and the message it promotes with the exterior wrap.” Since its founding in 2014, the WTFC

has grown to more than 300 members. It’s active on a number of fronts, from mentoring women in driving school and hosting career events at high schools to giving interviews to polish the public image of truckers. The federation also is involved in several charitable causes and appears at industry events to gain visibility and recruit women drivers, managers, dispatchers and technicians. The federation is drawing growing support in the industry. For example, Challenger Motor Freight, one of Canada’s largest trucking firms, recently announced that it would pay a year’s membership dues for any of its female drivers who join WTFC. “Western Star has a long heritage of females in executive positions and believes women play a critical role in diversifying our industry,” said Samantha Parlier, Vice-President of Marketing and Strategy for Western Star. “We are honored our 5700XE truck model is the flagship representation of this important organization.” The 2019 Western Star 5700XE is an ideal truck to raise awareness of the WTFC. The 5700XE already turns heads with its striking aerodynamic design and classic Western Star style, and the wrap, as well as a custom-designed blue and pink LED lighting scheme, are guaranteed to draw attention. Our industry has, for some time, been suffering from a shortage of professional

drivers, technicians and all manner of staff from OE dealers and independent distributors. It’s not a shortage of people that could fill these positions it’s just that, for some reason, our industry just doesn’t seem to be an attractive career choice for the numbers necessary to fill the many job opportunities available. I read with interest Al Tucker’s account of his trip to cover Volvo’s introduction of the VNX series at the Volvo Customer Experience Center in Virginia – and how easy it was to drive the new units. Added to the attention paid to driver comfort I started thinking about how, if prospective drivers knew about the improvements in today’s trucks, it just might raise the interest level. And, the other thought I had was the lack of women drivers. Maybe the barrier is really just an image issue. The one fact I do know is that there are many women driving parts delivery and courier trucks plus other light and medium trucks. A perfect group to reach out to for candidates. The story on this page about the Western Star collaboration with the Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada is a strong indication that today’s truck builders are taking this demographic seriously.

How to Seek Professional Financial Help

Titan – “Strength Through Innovation”

lot has happened at Titan Trailers Inc. since I first met their President Mike Kloepfer in 1973 at his farm-based manufacturing operation in Harley, Ontario. He had a vision then, with respect to fabricating specialized highway trailers that focused on innovative designs combined with efficient processes and highest quality finish. Fast forward to 2018 and my visit to the recently expanded 200,000 square foot Titan manufacturing facility in Courtland, Ontario. It can be accurately verified, that the name Titan Trailers also stands for, “Greatness Through Innovation”! My first impression of their new $10 million stand-alone trailer finishing shop – clearly visible from Highway #3 – was that it looked like a Hanger for a 747 aircraft. My subsequent tour of the facility only reinforced that feeling. The attention to detail has Mike’s name written all over it. It features heated shop floors, hi-tech programmable overhead LED lighting, vinyl covered walls in the acid wash bay with a sophisticated water filtration system and an expansive south sloping roof design set up for the future installation of solar panels. Think “unplugged” from the grid, and Titan’s future hydroelectric energy cost savings will give them a further competitive edge. With a current workforce of around 250 motivated specialists and the exclusive use of weight/fuel saving Aluminum in all future Trailer designs, combined with their continued incorporation of state-of-the–art robotic technology in the plants, production is gradually being ramped up from 800 units towards their objective of 1,200 units annually. If their plans sound overly ambitious for a family owned Canadian company, it’s because in recent years they have successfully expanded their market beyond Canada and the USA. A recent addition of a 21,000 sq.ft. assembly facility in Middlesbrough, UK, has been set up to service demand throughout the UK. Its location at this East coast port city will give Titan the opportunity to expand sales into the EU market. Combine this export plan with their decision in 2016 to appoint “Thinwall™ Trailers Australia” as their exclusive agent in Mount Gambier, Australia to assemble and market Titan bulk haulage trailers, further demonstrates the global appeal for Titan Trailers products. Lubrication: The Engine Lifesaver

he first filter used to keep oil clean was a bypass filter introduced in the ‘30’s. Oil flowed directly from the oil pan to the engine’s working parts, and a smaller proportion of the oil was sent through the filter via a second flow path that worked in parallel “bypassing” the first. In the late 40’s full-flow oil filters – depth then pleated paper – were introduced. Over time OEM’s moved from a combination of separate full-flow and by-pass filters to just a high-efficiency full-flow filter. Today there are a number of by-pass filter manufacturers serving the aftermarket. Filter media used ranges from toilet paper to cotton mixed with wood wool. When evaluating the effectiveness of the by-pass filter it’s critical that the media is tightly packed and doesn’t settle or channel allowing the oil to literally “by-pass” the by-pass filter material. Ram-packed, organic, depth elements can control particulates as well as corrosive contaminants such as acids, salt compounds, gums, lacquers, and varnishes. Benefits of a bypass filter: 1. Greater particulate filtration efficiency.

5. Longer oil drain intervals. 6. Reduced engine wear. 7. Longer engine life. The important difference between a fullflow filter and a bypass filter is the ability of a by-pass filter to remove much finer particulate than a full-flow filter. In other words, keeping your oil clean is better accomplished by using a full flow filter in combination with a bypass filter. AUTO-LUBE SYSTEMS Whether you operate highway trucks and trailers, buses, construction or agricultural equipment, poor lubrication of moving components impacts on equipment operating life – and cost – more than any other maintenance procedure. In fact, bearing failure is one of the major causes of equipment downtime, lost productivity and increased cost faced by today’s truck and equipment owner. To properly lubricate a bearing, it’s important to first know how grease works. Grease functions in two ways: 1. It provides a barrier between the pin and bushing – or roller/ball and bearing race – which reduces friction between wear surfaces and thereby extends the life of the components and

2. Removal of organic material. 3. Higher contaminant holding capacity. 4. Keeps engine oil cleaner and extends oil drain intervals.

The governing principle of most automatic lubrication systems is that its more effective to provide grease in small amounts very frequently – and to do so while the machine is operating. And, no matter how diligently the maintenance technician adheres to a greasing program, it’s almost impossible to keep up with changing operating conditions and bearing needs. Most maintenance programs call for components to be greased with a hand operated grease gun at preset intervals (once a day, week, month, etc.) and to do this when the machine is idle. This brings up several questions: Will the grease penetrate 360 degrees and flush out all the contaminant while the bearing is “resting”? In the case of a pin and bushing, the answer is NO! Will the greasing procedure take place when the bearing needs it the most? As mentioned, technicians tend to grease based on a preset PM

interval – daily, weekly, monthly. This may not coincide with optimum operational requirements. Example: in the case of mobile equipment the operating environment is in constant change. One day it is dry and dusty – and the next day it rains. Bearing contamination cannot be measured based on time intervals. Will the right amount of grease be applied to each bearing? Depending on size, each bearing requires a different amount of grease. The technician will tend to grease until the new grease is seen oozing from the bearing. Not only is this wasteful but it is not an indication that the complete bearing cavity has received grease particularly where the pin is resting on the bushing. Fifth Wheel Needs Greasing, Here’s Why

or an over-the-highway truck driver a long way from home, one of the last things on his mind is the grease on his tractor-trailer’s fifth wheel. Until, that is, the heavy load behind him starts doing some of the steering for him… at a not-so-comfortable 65 mph. Without proper lubrication, the natural friction of the two flat metal surfaces connecting at the fifth wheel will increasingly hinder the free movement required during actual driving and hauling operations. uring a routine secondary baggage examination at the Toronto Pearson Airport, two people from Jamaica were found by CBSA to have been carrying six containers declared as coffee in their luggage, that wasn’t coffee, it was cocaine! Busted! Once the officers opened these containers and realized that this white powder indeed tested positive for cocaine, the two people were arrested for possession of over seven kilograms of cocaine and were turned over to the RCMP. Brampton, Ontario man, Parminder Sidhu, 43, was charged and convicted of conspiracy to export cocaine from the USA into Canada. Sidhu had been hired by Michael Bagri, to transport 97 kilograms of cocaine in a tractor trailer truck from California to Buffalo, New York where then he met up with another man named Ravinder Arora who then tried to cross the Queenston/Lewis-

ton bridge border but he was stopped, greeted, caught red handed and arrested by US Customs and Border Patrol. Bagri and Sidhu were known to the US CBP for previous offences of trying to carry 26 kilograms of cocaine in a truck-driving tandem across the Pembroke, Ontario border from New York. In total there were 6 men all convicted and sentenced for drug smuggling, possession and intent to traffic. On April 9, 2018 at the Coutts, Alberta border crossing, CBSA seized 24 undeclared firearms. The two travellers, Douglas Gies, 41 and Caroline Elizabeth Gies, 42, were destined for Alaska; they were pulled over for a secondary inspection. They were both driving SUV’s with trailers in tow. Concealed within their vehicles was found 16 long guns, eight handguns and 70 overcapacity magazines; not only were they not declared by the two but the guns were clas-

Notes From Abrams Towing on the MidAmerica Trucking Show BY ROB KERBY

e were tasked with the job of researching transportation trade shows in the United States in order to target US trucking companies traveling to Ontario and to areas near this province’s borders. While there are plenty of carriers here, there is an overwhelming amount of freight shipped north of the border from all over the United States. This was a fertile market we wanted to explore. After months of deliberation we decided on the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky. It was a welcome reprieve to travel south after the winter we’ve had – the winter that never seems to end. We also decided to take one of our flagship heavy wreckers to enter in to the Show & Shine competition, partly to show off our equipment but also with the aim of attracting potential customers. Away we went. With trucks loaded with our gear and the Rotator gleaming we looked forward to nicer weather for our stay down south. Our first hiccup – there’s always a hiccup – was the Interstate 75 in Detroit which

was under construction. After what felt like a 70 KM detour through some of Detroit’s finest areas we finally reconnected with Interstate 75 and proceeded southbound. The rest of the trip down was uneventful until we entered Kentucky. Then it started snowing and by the time it ended Louisville, Kentucky had a fresh blanket of 11 inches of snow. Really? We came south for a truck show and we get buried in snow. So much for a clean and shiny truck, but we had a plan and had booked the truck for a wash for when we arrived just in case. After setting up our displays inside the show we redirected our attention to the Show & Shine area outside. Fortunately for us the guys shined up the Rotator and once again it looked great. Surrounding us at the show was an unbelievable display of chrome and custom paint. Anyone would be amazed, despite the 6 inches of snow blanketing the top of every truck. The venue was impressive if for nothing else than its sheer size. The front hall of the Kentucky Exposition Center approximates the size of the entire International Center in Toronto. It was exhausting to

tour the main hall and several others that meandered throughout the building, but there was so much to see we didn’t want to stop. The hospitality of the people from Kentucky was second to none, as it was from folks from all over who converged at this great event. We also ran into several people from our neck of the woods, some who have been coming here for years.

Hooray Canada! It was nice to witness support for the industry from home. Overall it was a fantastic show despite the obstacles, and we look forward to another great event next year at the MidAmerica Trucking Show. Thanks for your hospitality Kentucky! hile the basic platform on trucks has remained somewhat the same, all of the important systems that allow trucks to operate efficiently and safely are constantly changing. It used to be that the driver was in control but as we move to more autonomous trucks the role of the driver is evolving. Drivers it seems, are now more systems managers than they are drivers so it is important to understand how these various systems function. Cooling systems, air conditioning, and emission controls have been around in one form or another and to get the most benefit we need to understand how they operate. Cooling systems used to be easy. If a needle on a gauge ran into the red or if steam was blowing out of your engine you could be pretty sure that there was a problem. Now with diagnostic systems and preset maintenance schedules it can sometimes be difficult to understand what is going on. While the needle and the steam are time-tested and true warnings drivers can’t wait until that point with the cooling system. Keeping on top of maintenance and vehicle specific training of drivers is key to keeping the

engine running. The engine is cool, what about the driver? At one time the air conditioning system was a crank on the door that opened the window. Once trucks started to be equipped with proper air conditioning systems the challenge was to balance driver comfort with fuel costs. While driver comfort is the priority, the costs of running an engine all night can be high and can be offset by adding another temperature control system. Auxiliary power units, generators, or even a shore power system will surely help reduce your fuel costs. There is no “one size fits all” solution and your equipment suppliers are a good place to look for information. Emission systems are complex and expensive. I remember the day when people pulled the catalytic converters off of their cars and enlarged the size of the fuel fillers to allow for leaded fuel to still be used. Why? Unleaded fuel was expensive and we didn’t fully understand the need to control vehicle emissions. Much has been written about the need for proper emission systems and with the addition of diesel exhaust fluid systems drivers need to add DEF top-ups to their vehicle checks. Did you know that DEF freezes

at -11 C°? DEF is another example of how trucks are changing. Canada has an extreme climate and regardless of the season engines need to be kept cool and drivers need to be comfortable in warmer weather. With proper driver training and adherence to maintenance schedules cooling systems, air conditioning, and emissions systems

can work well for us to improve efficiency and driver satisfaction. A Young Person’s Look at Retreading

f you’re a young person working on developing your trade, your career or your craft, you may have insight to offer others that you aren’t quite aware of. We were fortunate to meet a young representative of a great retreading equipment company Tesco-Italmatic LLC, who at 24 years old, is proud to be working in the industry as a 3rd generation member of his family’s company. D.J. Zeledon gave us a nice interview this week and shared some of his views on the future of the industry, and we’d like to share them with you. RTA: Many would say retreading is poised for a much bigger resurgence that it has in the past. What do you see as a young person who is trying to build a career out of this? D.J. (Tesco Italmatic): I see a lot more opportunities coming up on the retreading side. In my opinion, today’s retreads

are safer, if not better than some of the new tires that are on the road. People see things online, and they see tires and tread lying on the road and they automatically blame it on retreads. Retreaders understand that, and it’s why retreaders take a more stringent look at the tests they do, and they go above and beyond to make a retread safer and a more costeffective tire. RTA: You represent the third generation in your family’s business. When did you start picking up an interest in it? D.J.: My dad and grandpa always brought me into the shop. Ever since I can remember around four years old or so, I would go in and sit on my grandpa‘s lap or my dad’s, and drive the forklift with him. As a kid I would sweep the floor and after a while, you start earning your stripes. You start from a young age and I kind of grew up in the shop. When

I was around thirteen, I started messing with hydraulics and learning about lifts a little bit. I’d go in on weekends and scrape down the old paint on chambers, sanding it down and repainting. But I’ve come to be fully invested in it. On the business side, eventually my dad started to put my face out there more, and now I have customers calling me directly with TPMS or tire repair problems and questions. Sometimes even in the evening, but I like them to be calling me as a resource. I want to be seen that way, as someone you can purchase from, and follow up with. I’m involved in the sales of some tire machinery, balancers and TPMS equipment. I’m not involved in the big stuff as much as of yet, but I’m still learning of course and you know you never stop learning and everything comes in due time.

RTA: You seem to be more aware and involved in the environmental side of things. That’s a big component of what we do in the tire retreading industry. D.J.: Yes. My father and I are outdoorsmen, and we appreciate the fact that we only have one planet. We know the problems with dumping tires here in Florida where I live. Our company is aware of what it takes to prevent that from happening, and by selling and servicing retread equipment, we feel like we’re part of the solution. All around, Tesco-Italmatic has been growing and looking to the future. One thing that I would tell my kids that I learned from my dad is that you have to enjoy what you do. If you enjoy what you do it’s never a day of work. It’s a passion going in to work and doing a great job.

Winning the Leverage Lottery

ver the decades I’ve seen capacity ebb and flow, but nothing compares to January when millions of truck miles just evaporated into thin air. Sure, the goofy weather and booming economy contributed to the capacity crunch. But ELDs were the main culprit. It was like the industry’s lucky numbers fell one by one from the hopper for the “Leverage Lottery.” For the first time, customers en masse were practically begging carriers to move shipments before asking for a price. It was great seeing truckers take advantage of this windfall. Small, transactional carriers not bound by customer contracts really cashed in as spot rates doubled or even tripled. The only thing limiting their success was the ability (or lack of ability) to fill driver seats. The capacity crunch also gave Canadian domestic carriers a chance to observe as they prepare for an ELD mandate in 2020.

Leverage is a powerful tool, and truckers could walk from any deal because there were better deals from which to choose. But even lottery winners go belly up. Here’s how to make the most of your leverage while you have it. CONTRACT COMMITMENTS The first quarter was tricky for carriers bound by customer contracts. I heard lots of complaining about “having to move shipments” for half the price of what was being offered on the open market. Contracts may have stung in the short term, but those committed customers have long-term value. Now is not the time to gouge them. But you can use your leverage to negotiate better terms. In particular, I would focus on two things: strength of commitment, and annual rate increases. Almost every contract I’ve seen allows shippers to walk away with little or no penalty. That is nuts. Your customers have more of a commitment to a lease

on a $10,000 copier than the $4 million in equipment you provide. Contracts must lock them in: a three-year deal is a threeyear deal – or pay up! It’s also time to consider ending the lifetime rate shippers enjoy year after year. Something is seriously wrong if you can’t get a 3% annual cost of living increase from a customer. OUT TO PASTURE Few things irk me more than the godawful fuel surcharge. Franky, I believe that high fuel surcharges have helped brand our industry as weak and unsophisticated. It’s time to put this system out to pasture. When quoting a customer, I suggest you blend the current price of fuel into your rates. Creating a new ground-zero will permanently increase the base rates while keeping surcharges at a more manageable level. If fuel prices go down, you win. If they go up, you have a provision in your contract to cover the shortfall. Remember, leverage is powerful. REVENUE LEAKS Think of all the freebies we’ve given to customers over the years. My all-time favorite is what the industry has coined “spotting a trailer”. Let’s call it what it is: free mobile warehousing. We could be the only industry that gives customers $70,000 assets to use at their conven-

ience. When I owned MSM Transportation, these “revenue leaks” bugged me so much that one year I went on a bender and plugged all the giveaways I could find. When the dust settled we were collecting every charge we were owed by customers. This added close to $700,000 to our bottom line. It was like picking up $7 million in revenue without having to find nary a driver. GROWING THE FLEET With all this leverage, my focus would be on growing the size of my bottom line and not the size of my fleet. But if you can get drivers it would be a mistake not to look at opportunities to grow with best-in-class customers – the ones who actually get it. What about the bad customers? You know the ones who don’t let drivers use their bathroom? Good luck moving your freight pal. Off-Highway Engine Idling: Why it Should Factor into Your Lubricant Choice

ff-highway vehicles face challenges unique to their sectors, for example, near 24 hours, seven day a week operations, and dirty, muddy environments. Moreover, unplanned downtime in operations can cause disruption and make a significant difference to a business’s bottom line. Reliability, efficiency and safety are therefore of paramount importance to ensure a smooth operation, even in the most extreme of conditions. For fleet managers in these environments, it’s important to consider all the factors affecting equipment reliability and fuel efficiency, including the impact that prolonged engine idling can have on heavy duty engines. A FOCUS ON ENGINE IDLING Off-highway engines spend a considerable amount of time idling - with manufacturer Komatsu estimating that a construction machine’s average idle time is 40 percent. However, it can be assumed that this will vary fleet to fleet - with some idling significantly more. Having a detrimental impact on the engine, one hour of idling is the same as driving approximately 40 kilometers. This impacts the combustion process and increases the likelihood of the oil temperature dropping below 100ºC, which can result in the buildup of water, ingression of fuel and increased acids formation in the oil, ultimately accelerating engine wear. In addition, engine idling also uses con-

siderable fuel - one of the largest expenses for fleet managers. It is estimated that a large diesel engine can consume up to 4 litres of fuel for each hour it is left idling. So how can lubricant selection help protect an idling engine? ROLE OF HEAVY DUTY ENGINE LUBRICANTS Lubricants protect the engine, and help optimize its performance and efficiency over its useful life. It does this by minimizing metal-to-metal contact between moving components while reducing pumping and spinning losses. For heavy duty industries, such as construction and mining, API CK-4 oils are particularly relevant. They offer improved resistance to oxidation and aeration, as well as increased shear stability. Improved aeration control is important to note for off-highway engines as in these environments there is more potential for air to become entrained within the oil. This can be dangerous at the bearings, where maintaining a suitable oil film is critical to protect them. Also, with a lower viscosity at lower temperatures, API CK-4 SAE 10W-30 and 5W-40 can move more easily through the engine and flow faster. This helps prevent engine wear at vehicle start-up, an essential benefit as idling reduces the work rate of the engine, so it’s important to use oil with a good low flow temperature. Selecting oil that can neutralize any acid that builds up during prolonged periods of idling is also recommended. The oil speci-

fied should therefore be able to maintain its Base Number. Combining these key criteria will allow for heavy duty equipment engines to be protected and help improve vehicle reliability while reducing unplanned downtime. Before selecting a product, lubricant choice should always be based on the OEM recommendations as outlined in the owner’s manual. MONITORING AND ANALYSIS Incorporating a used oil analysis program into the maintenance schedule of vehicles that idle regularly can also present many benefits. For example, the analysis can highlight if the oil should be changed earlier than normal and bring to attention maintenance issues before they become serious and expensive to repair. These programs can also be used to extend oil drain intervals; however, this should always be supported by recommendations from the OEM manual and advice from technical experts. A three-step process, oil analysis typically involves: taking a representative sample

from the vehicle, sending the sample to a qualified used oil analysis laboratory, and interpreting/acting upon the recommendations of the results. This is most effective when performed at regular intervals, as it allows vehicle specific trends to be identified and measured over time. It also provides time for maintenance plans to be adjusted in advance, meaning that it can coincide with any scheduled downtime. Off-highway vehicles operate in unique and tough environments that demand reliability and efficiency. Selecting a heavy duty engine lubricant that can perform under these conditions, and offer protection required for an engine that spends considerable time idling, means that fleet managers can benefit from enhanced engine protection, increased uptime and reduced unplanned downtime. New Dana Axle for Severe Service Vehicles

Registration Open for “Driven to Lead” Program

ilton, Ontario – The “Driven to Lead” program is an experiential, practical leadership program that will take participants through hands-on and impactful exercises focusing on topics like culture, teamwork, accountability and strategy. The program will be facilitated by Eagle’s Flight (www. eaglesflight.com), a global leader in education, at their facility in Guelph, Ontario. The ‘Driven to Lead’ program consists of four separate full-day modules so participants can elect to complete the entire program or select individual modules. Graduates of the entire program (all four modules) will receive free registration for

the PMTC’s annual conference in June 2019 where they will be presented with their diploma. Graduates of individual modules will receive a certificate of completion for the module(s) they complete. “T

hose who have the ability to be grateful are the ones who have the ability to achieve greatness,” Steve Maraboli, Life, the Truth, and Being Free. When was the last time you received a hand written thank you note, or a card just to let you know someone was thinking of you? If you’re like most people, it’s probably been too long. When was the last time you wrote a thank you note? If you know me personally, you’ll know that I am a firm believer in writing thank you notes. Apparently, I instilled that same conviction in my children, as the thank you notes from both my son and daughter are sure to follow a gift, party or act of kindness. I keep them to remind myself of the good times we shared. Most people use the excuse that they either don’t have the materials handy or they don’t have the time to write out and mail a thank you note. Both excuses are just a reflection of your priorities. Keep notes, pens

and stamps in plain sight so you can take a moment to send your thoughts without much effort. What’s more fun than receiving a note or card after a long day in the office or a difficult day at school. A note is something tangible that reminds you that the sender is thinking of you. One young woman kept every card her mother had sent her after she left home. Later, she used them as decorations at her wedding by cutting hundreds of little hearts out of the cards and spreading them across the banquet tables. The groom explained to the family and friends that the decorations were the result of over 100 cards his new mother-in-law had sent to his new wife. We were all taught to say thank you and to acknowledge kindness, but it seems that civility has been replaced by self-centeredness. We refuse to show our appreciation to someone because THEY haven’t shown appreciation to us! Where does it begin? Perhaps with you!

If you’ve been reading this blog you’ll know about the campaign of #SteeringTowardKindness. At Women In Trucking Association we make it a priority to showcase acts of kindness by our members. From sharing home cooked meals (truck cooked meals?) with strangers, to paying for a shower for a homeless person or even offering money for a ride home, professional drivers are some of the kindest, most generous people I’ve ever met. However, drivers are also some of the most under-appreciated folks as well. Delivering a load on time doesn’t win any favors, but if you miss your appointment you’ll hear about it. Keeping your truck in top shape is expected, but if a tail light is out on the trailer, you will be penalized. Do we really need to wait for a week in August to honor our professional drivers for their hard work? Author Gregory Smith asked respondents to list their greatest dissatisfaction at work for his book, Here Today, Here Tomorrow, found the top answer to be a lack of appre-

ciation. Yet, when companies make an effort to show their gratitude, sales are increased, productivity is raised and happiness is positively affected by employees. Seems pretty simple, doesn’t it? How can you help us in our efforts at #SteeringTowardKindness? Share your stories with us. Send someone a note or a card and watch his or her reaction. Stick a post it note where they’ll be sure to see it. Pay for the meal of the person behind you at the fast food restaurant. Donate to a worthy cause in someone else’s name. Leave a generous tip. We’ll share them and spread the good vibes. By the way, the young woman who saved her mother’s cards and cut them into hearts for her wedding was my daughter. Are You Burning Cheap Fuel?

ur bodies and our engines have a lot in common, including their preference for quality fuel. Whether you drive a truck, car, motorcycle, or boat, you know that its performance and mileage varies based on fuel type, so why would you expect your body to be any different? What we eat is literally what allows us to function; anything you eat is broken down into energy, with certain foods providing more energy and health benefits than others. So if you’re eating heavily processed foods that lack in nutrients (think energy drinks, cookies, fried food, etc.) how can you expect that your body will function properly? Hint: you can’t, and it won’t. These poor quality foods may give you an initial feeling of energy or satisfaction, as many of them result in the release of feel-good hormones such as dopamine and serotonin. This hormone release is what causes food addiction, but that’s another topic of discussion. What I want you to focus on is the feeling you get long after the initial buzz wears off – after your blood sugar crashes and the caffeine wears off. How do you feel then? I can guarantee it’s not very good, because that’s when you find yourself starving, tired, cranky, and maybe even bloated or gassy. All from a little junk food you thought you needed. And how did your body actually benefit, long term? Did it receive the proper nutrients (vitamin C, iron, B vitamins, antioxidants…) needed to thrive and repair itself? Nope. Instead it was burdened by your choice and forced to filter out what it can’t use (think preservatives, artificial flavors and colors). We know higher quality fuel is more expensive, so is there a cost to this higher quality food? Many like to argue that healthy food costs more, but after a short while you’ll quickly see that isn’t the case. Don’t think that you need to be buying all organic produce, fancy shakes and expensive bars. Get back to the basics: • Fruit and vegetables (fresh or frozen, whatever is on sale is just fine) • Smaller portions of meat (no, you don’t need to be eating two chicken breasts for dinner every day; this is where many people throw money away) • Dried or canned beans, rice, oats, grains, etc. to add bulk and nutrition to your meals – it doesn’t get more affordable than these! • Water to drink (if you’re concerned

about money, why are you spending it on pop, juice, drive-thru coffee, alcohol, etc.?) These building blocks are what your body craves. They will allow your body to perform efficiently, provide you with plenty of energy, and keep you as healthy as possible. This doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in your favorite treats here and there, but your diet needs to be primarily high quality, nutrient dense foods, or else

you’ll slowly become more run-down and unhealthy as the years pass. Start paying attention to the QUALITY of your food, and start looking at it as fuel that can either hinder or enhance the way you look, feel, and perform.

T h i s s i m p l e mindset shift can take your body from feeling like a rusty, sputtering Oldsmobile to a shiny new Mercedes running on premium.

First Quarter Freight Volumes Outpace any Previous Volumes on Record

oronto, Ontario - The number of loads posted on Loadlink in 2018 for Canadian and cross-border load volumes significantly outperformed any previous quarter on record. March volumes increased six percent compared to February 2018, and year-over-year, volumes were 39 percent higher than those recorded in March 2017. First quarter volumes grew 41 percent compared to an already impressive fourth quarter of 2017, and increased 62 percent compared to the first quarter of 2017. Rallying of load volumes were significant in all Canadian regions for the first quarter of 2018. When looking at performance by province, Alberta led the growth with a 41 percent increase in load volumes quarterover-quarter. Quarterly growth in load volumes by region (Q1 2018 over Q4 2017): • Western (BC, AB, SK, MB): 38 percent, Ontario: 37 percent, Quebec: 36 percent and Atlantic: 30 percent. Other quarterly highlights: • Load volumes in January, February and March of 2018 were the highest ever recorded by Loadlink, the highest month

for load volumes was recorded in January and truck postings had the most significant month-over-month increase in March a positive shift for the supply and demand curve. Intra-Canada loads accounted for 24 percent of the total volumes and amounted to a 23 percent increase year-over-year. Cross-border load postings represented 74 percent of the data submitted by Loadlink users:

• Loads leaving Canada to the United States increased 58 percent year-overyear and loads entering Canada increased 39 percent year-over-year. EQUIPMENT PERFORMANCE Equipment postings increased 15 percent compared to February 2018; however, declined 28 percent when compared to March 2017. TRUCK-TO-LOAD RATIO Even with the significant growth in load

volumes, truck volumes rallied in March, forging a fairer, yet still highly competitive truck-to-load ratio for the month. The number of trucks posted on Loadlink was 0.92 for every one load posted on the network, compared to 0.85 in February. Year-over-year, the ratio continued to tighten from 1.78 in March 2017. hen people drop in we may ask, how can we help today. Often responses are surprising. We proceed to try and create a comfortable atmosphere. Sometimes to their own surprise, people open up and literally pour out their heart. It could be family matters, health or even financial issues. We get interesting responses, when we ask what is the most significant thing happening in your life right now? Once again we listen with very thoughtful responses. Often finish with a thank you for helping, when all we were able to do is listen and finish with a prayer to all mighty God. The question we may ask is, could you tell me what God is doing in your life. The person may respond, “I really don`t have a relationship with God. But the last while I have had problems with my teenager, I sure have been thinking about it.” Or when I was a kid I used to go to Sunday school. My mother and dad made me

go. I got away from it, but the financial problems we are under, has really caused me to think about this. These statements sound like God may be at work in the person’s life. He may be drawing the person to Himself, causing the person to seek after God, or bringing convection of sin. As we travel down life’s toll road, much goes on in our mind. Often we look for a better way, more trouble free and peaceful. There is a more peaceful way, no not totally trouble free. Even the One Who died on the cross had a rough go. But He, did it all for each one of us. That’s one reason we have verses like John 3:16, For God so loved the World that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Plus we have I John 1:9, If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Make sure you take the right exit.

Melissa repeatedly became frustrated when the fuel nozzle kept falling out of the tanks during fueling. She asked around and realized other drivers had the same problem. So, she came up with a solution. Melissa invented a fueling brace that holds

Emergency Preparedness: Are You Protected?

With the forecasted increase in volumes, as well as the slow state of pipeline growth in Canada, this fact will hold true well in to the future. Government regulations around the transport of these products continue to evolve, and shippers’ responsibilities for emergency preparedness and response are shifting accordingly. WHERE IT ALL STARTED Government regulations significantly changed in 2013 after the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster. Transport Canada implemented requirements for rail shippers to have an emergency response assistance plan (ERAP) for flammable liquids, in addition to already regulated dangerous goods. With this change, Transport Canada also requires all flammable liquids ERAP holders to provide firefighting foam and equipment, and technical advice, to first responders on scene as needed. Thus began the trend of shifting more of the responsibility for emergency response to the shippers of these dangerous goods. OPERATING IN OR THROUGH B.C.? Last year, British Columbia released a new set of regulations on spill contingency planning, applicable to transporters of 10,000 litres or more of liquid petroleum products by rail, pipeline and highway. Shippers must plan now to have the appropriate emergency response plans in place for the October 2018 deadline. While B.C. is the first province to release more stringent spill response regulations, it is to the benefit of shippers and carriers to be proactive in dangerous goods emergency preparedness and response. here is a push towards washing your vehicles and recycling your water. Not only is it becoming mandatory across many Provinces and States, most feel it is the right thing to do. How about Rainwater Harvesting? That is probably a new term you are not used to seeing in vehicle washing. Did you know that 99.4% of the water on the earth is in the ocean or ice cap/ glaciers? That means only 0.6% of the water available is fresh water in lakes, streams, rain and ground water. This is the amount left to sustain the 7 billion people on the earth. We are fortunate in the Great Lakes area to not seem to worry about the resources within our reach to tap into this supply. In many parts of North America, it’s not that simple. Thus, this issue of water recycling is continually increasing in the minds of people. If you are on a well system, it can become necessary to lengthen the life of the well water. Also, it becomes a difficult decision on where to allow the gray water

to drain. Many companies in the rural areas are now getting creative and collecting rain water to wash their vehicles. We hear customers say, “I don’t pay for water, so not to worry.” We all know that eventually there will be an issue, just may not be while you are the employee of that location that you need to worry today. If you are on the city water grid, there are other issues to consider. The cost of water is continually increasing beyond the inflation rate. Politicians have easily figured out this user fee system on water in and water out to be charged to the

customer is an easy process with little resistance. What company would actually complain that this is an unfair practice? The first thought I always recommend is, reduce water intake thus reduces water outtake, which reduces the problem in the first place. It’s simple, less in means less issue to deal with. Using a ¾” water hose for an hour of washing a vehicle will use over 1,000 gallons of water. How do you stop that? Simple, use less water and less time to wash is where we start the analysis. Automated systems start as low as 2.5 gallons of water per minute and as high as hundreds of gallons per minute. Some systems can wash in less than 2 minutes to 5 minutes. We can help you figure out what best suits your needs. Common sense says, even if you recycle your water, less in costs less to process. In all situations, water per minute should be your standard to measure you desires. I have seen the cost of water as high as $0.04/gallon of water charged by cities. If

you do the math, that is $320.00 per day if you used the water hose for a straight 8 hours. Over $100K per year of strictly water costs. There is a very economical and environmental solution to this overwhelming expense. That easy solution is catching rain water and storing it for water usage. It is a very simple and low cost procedure. You can have a 1,000 gallon storage tank, or more, and collect distilled, mineral free water that will not spot or etch. There are many systems available on the internet or with your local water supply companies. If you do the math on the costs of water today and the cost of installing a Rainwater Harvest System, you will see the ROI and understand the benefits.
