Trailer Market Robust Amid Innovation & Tight Regulatory Standards
T
he trailer market has shown promising growth recently with sales totalling over 330,000 units over the past 12 months. According to FTR strong freight growth and high trailer capacity rates call for more trailers to relieve the capacity shortage. Good news to be sure for manufacturers and providers with healthy numbers predicted for all trailer types, so much so that some orders are already in for 2019 purchases. As discussed in previous issues of this magazine aerodynamic drag accounts for a significant portion of fuel consumption at both urban and highway speeds. This is due in part to the air speed that collects at the rear of the trailer. If air speed reaching the trailer doors doubles, then base pressure drag increases almost four fold. A 20 percent reduction in aerodynamic drag yields a 6 percent improvement in fuel economy in a rig traveling at 30 mph and even better mileage as speed increases. Fuel economy stands alongside other compelling incentives, not least of which is pressure from large shippers to achieve greater efficiencies to reduce drag and improve trailer performance. Trailer builders face considerable challenges in their efforts to please customers who call for better and more efficient trailers. There are strict regulations dictating dimensions and cargo capacity, and many rely on the Canadian Transportation Equipment Association (CTEA) to assist with approvals. The Association helps members understand and comply with legislated requirements, e.g. vehicle weights and dimensions, the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and many other compliance issues. The CTEA provides NSM and Pre-clearance application review services to its members. These services use the application guidelines provided by Transport Canada, but most important is that CTEA has developed a set format that Transport Canada has come to recognize and accept, making it easier for them to review the application file for accuracy and completeness. Arguably – and a surprise to some – is the ongoing driver shortage. Fewer drivers means a greater push to enhance loading capacity of existing trailers are on the road. And with demands to have drivers at home on
4 July 2018
a more regular basis fleets are running trailers with increased duty cycles, resulting in accelerated wear and tear. Consequently, the push is on for lighter trailers that can withstand toutgher duty cycles. While making way for additional capacity, lighter trailers can reduce fuel consumption when empty or partially loaded. But using the right materials is crucial. New composite materials are being used, but these must meet strict standards while maintaining cost effectiveness and be practical to repair and maintain. Efforts to achieve lighter trailers include incorporating new structural materials, less material construction in floors, and increasing cross member size. Trailer builders are always on the lookout for higher tensile steel that will provide lighter and stronger trailers. Also, on the forefront is a suitable replacement for oak floor decking, possibly a composite product. Diminishing supplies of oak are pushing up prices and quality is falling. A possible replacement is a laminate type product. Of equal importance to the industry is the manufacture of environmentally “green” products. Titan Trailer, based in Delhi, Ontario, is known for its THINWALL construction. According to the company, “only THINWALL offers the proven strength of doublewelded, double-walled aluminum. Titan’s exclusive patented processes and original designs produce today’s most advanced smooth side trailer
body for long life and efficient performance.” The THINWALL pane, Titan continues, is a hollow-core extrusion that achieves high strength with light weight similar to the way that corrugation turns paper into a high-strength board. The inner wall is thicker than the outer wall to absorb load impacts and to prevent interior damage from penetrating to the outside. The aluminum web between the walls is integral to the extrusion, with no mechanical joining. Energy savings are accrued, as well, with the In-Floor Heating system with energy efficiency improvement up to 30 percent compared to traditional alternatives. Titan explains: “In oldstyle systems much of the heat from ceiling-mounted heaters was wasted as the hot air collected up at the ceiling. The in-floor heating system maintains even heat from the floor to ceiling, with no waste. Precise temperature controls with integrated floor sensors deliver quick and constant heat recovery. The result is greater comfort for employees with reduced energy consumption.” Another leading North American trailer builder is Wabash National, a company that claims to be a leader in aerodynamics excellence with 10-year coverage on all skirt and nose fairing options and 5 year coverage on tails. Wabash claims that drag points are minimized with its drag reduction system, and Aeroskirts deliver fuel economy because of high performance Duraplate construction and flexible,
Titan Factory: As a custom builder, Titan has one of the most complete, most advanced trailer fabrication shops in the world. Innovative “green” technologies in their new manufacturing facilities put Titan at the forefront of sustainable manufacturing practices for employee and environmental health. To assemble extruded THINWALL™ panels, automatic welding process is used which deep welds the sides automatically, more accurately, with a more pleasing finish and 75% faster than any other available process.
lightweight design. Closer to home, Bedard Tankers is a Montreal based company specializing in liquid, dry bulk, liquefied gases and cryogenic tanker trailers. Bedard has added several new models to its inventory. Included is the new “Bullet” Aluminum Sparger type Tanker Trailer designed for transporting Sodium Chloride. Features include Intraax suspensions, three unloading points – back and both sides – a catwalk and railing. The “Bullet” design has expanded its BTrain with an aerodynamic design with a lower center of gravity. The 2,200 cu. ft. aluminum Super B-Train is used for lime, cement and related products. The TC 406 addition, meanwhile, is a 46,000-litre aluminum semi trailer with a tridem heavy duty air suspension which is equipped with two baffles and collapsible handrail. More information is available at www.bedard.com. The British Columbia based Magnum Trailer is a Canadian company that supplies trailers for specialized use in multiple applications. As an example, Forestry Trailers feature several types, among them the Four Axle B Train with Tubular cross-members to prevent frame cracking, Hayrack Trailers with cross-members to prevent frame cracking, Quad Loggers with axles fitted with slings to prevent over extension of shocks, and Tri Axle Loggers. Magnum also supplies Highway Trailers, Live Haul, Oil & Gas, and Terminal Trailers. The company website, www. magnumtrailer.com, highlights the full suite of trailer choices. In the GTA area Select Trailer Sales in Mississauga supplies new Stoughton & Wilson trailers. Grain trailers, flats, containers and furniture vans are available. Select Trailer Sales also deals in the sale and trade of used trailers. The company carries brand name parts from companies such as Haldex, Meritor, STEMCO, Hendrickson and others. Kudos goes to the innovative companies on the industrial transportation landscape that develops new trailer designs and introduces improvements to existing models. And to be sure, attention to fuel savings by reducing drag, improvements to trailer design and manufacture, and compliance with regulations are critical for navigating the sea changes of the trailer market.

Factoring
By Bruce Sayer
If You’re Not Growing, You’re Dying
I
t’s a common saying amongst company owners; “If you’re not growing, you’re dying”. In the trucking business, this is a mantra that is well embraced. When competitors continue to expand their fleet size, grabbing more customers and lanes, they threaten your customer base. Staying ahead by taking advantage of growth opportunities when they are presented is critical to sustainability. Capital is key to growing any business. If all you are managing is to maintain enough cash flow to pay bills and driver salaries, then you will never be able to take your business further. Instead, it becomes a grind just to service the few customers you do have and haul whatever available loads are acquired from load boards. Without growth capital, either accumulated and saved over time or borrowed from the bank, it is nearly impossible to expand most businesses. The good news is; trucking is unlike any other business and therefore has its own unique challenges and solutions. With margins being so slim and banks so restrictive, it is extremely difficult for most small and medium size fleets to secure the funds needed to grow. Little is more frustrating than the opportunity to take on additional profitable business, yet lack
resources to meet the demand. Fortunately, freight factoring companies provide funding solutions designed specifically to address the financial needs of freight carriers and brokers. Normally, when companies acquire new business they need to increase operational capacity to meet demand. This requires capital expense. If a lease agreement for new equipment or a bank loan is needed to meet expense, then monthly repayment obligations are imposed. In this scenario, positive cash flow becomes a greater challenge as customers often remit payment at a much slower pace than lease/loan payments become due. If not corrected this will eventually create a cash-poor position that could become highly detrimental and could even spell the end of the business. The advantage of freight factoring lies in its ability to provide fast cash for each load that is delivered. By factoring invoices, trucking companies are paid within 24 hours of dropping a load instead of waiting 30 or 60 days for customers to pay. With this ability, transportation companies are now able to capitalize immediately on work performed and stay ahead of the constant and cyclical expense of expansion. For trucking companies that face unlimited growth potential, freight
factoring provides an even larger advantage. One of the greatest barriers to expansion is credit limits imposed by the company’s lender. If an operating line of credit is needed to support growth, the ability to meet monthly repayment obligations through liquidity will need to be demonstrated. This becomes a Catch-22 scenario as the additional debt will negatively impact the company’s working capital and debt service coverage ratios which will likely break the bank covenant that governs the loan. It’s a disturbing
condition set by banks that basically translates to; the more money that’s need to support growth, the less likely banks are to provide it. Freight factoring behaves in the exact opposite manner: the more invoices your trucks produce from growing business, the more funds are instantly available. This opposing difference in funding policy makes all the difference for growing trucking companies. For more information about freight factoring, please visit www.AccutracCapital.com.

Secure, Double-Seal Truck-Lite 99® Series Now Standard on Flatbed Trailers
R
andolph, Ohio – East Manufacturing, manufacturer of aluminum flatbed, drop deck, dump and refuse trailers as well as aluminum truck bodies, is pleased to announce that the Truck-Lite 99® Series wiring harness is now standard on all new East BST, BST II, MMXTM and NARROW NECK flatbed trailers. The Truck-Lite 99 Series has been
designed as a closed system by integrating a molded plug with two sealing surfaces, rather than just one. This
new two-seal plug keeps moisture and debris out of the plug, guarding against corrosion. MORE RELIABLE CONNECTION The 99 Series uses a clamp, also serving as the mounting bracket that wraps around the width of the plug to ensure that the connection is secure. Typical harness clamps only wrap around the junction itself so the wider clamp holds the joint more securely, resulting in a more reliable connection. Truck-Lite is the first harness manufacturer to design a trapezoid-shaped connection, which makes installation quick and easy, and it allows the operator to be confident that he has proper pin alignment and a positive lock. Since most harness cable connectors are round, it is sometimes difficult for an operator to be assured of a positive pin connection from underneath the trailer. “We are excited to equip our flatbed
trailers with the new 99 Series harness,” said Dave de Poincy, President of East. “Truck-Lite’s attention to connection and corrosion issues will provide our customers with a more reliable and secure connection, which coincides with our mission to provide reliable trailer products for our customers.” “Truck-Lite strives to produce the
most dependable harness systems available,” said Jon Stineman, US OEM Sales Director for Truck-Lite. “We’re proud to partner with East Manufacturing to deliver this innovative and reliable harness solution to the market.” For more information visit East Manufacturing at www.EastMfg. com.

Tiger Tool Builds on Longstanding Reputation as Provider of Industry Leading Tools BY MAREK KRASUSKI
S
ince its inception in 1984, innovation has been the cornerstone of success for Tiger Tool - an international leader in the manufacture and provision of Driveline and Suspension tools. The Tiger Tool story, known to many, bears repeating to underscore the company’s commitment to product quality and in equal measure, to the safety of its customers. The year was 1984 when the owner of a fleet of trucks, Mike Skoworodko, failed to remove a seized universal joint from a vehicle, despite the existing tools at his disposal. The difficulty lay in the inability to disassemble the driveline without causing damage to other components of the truck. With perseverance and out-of-thebox thinking, Mike eventually designed and produced the world’s most efficient and effective Universal Joint Puller. Making the right tool made all the difference then, and from that time forward, making the right tool has continued to make all the difference for Tiger Tool’s customers. Ingenuity was the foundation of Tiger Tool in 1984 and it remains the driving force behind every decision under current owner and President Ken Jansen. Indeed, to borrow from the company’s tag line, Tiger Tool has what it takes to get the job done. The company website, www.tigertool.com, highlights the breadth of quality tools in multiple transportation segments - Heavy Duty, Mining, Intermediate, Automotive and Motorsports. Tools are available for virtually all categories; among them
axles, brakes, hubs, pins/bushings, wheel studs and yokes. To be sure, Tiger Tools invests heavily in product quality with each tool designed to customer demand. Marketing Manager Kevin Scheer underscores the company’s assiduous efforts to achieve optimal payback. “People identify Tiger Tool as a leader in the development of Heavy-Duty Suspension and Driveline tools, but really, this only scratches the surface of our identity. Our values are driven by the spirit of passion and ingenuity that our team brings to the table every day. We are a dynamic workforce, encompassing a variety of backgrounds and experiences, working together to achieve a common goal - develop cutting-edge tools to resolve the most frustrating challenges faced by technicians. We believe in a higher standard of quality - not only for the final product, but for the entire journey, from conception to fruition, and the complete customer experience. It starts with an idea, or an industry challenge to be resolved,” he explained. Scheer’s reference to a complete customer experience includes, when necessary, customer participation in the creation of a tool to solve a persistent problem. Customers are assured that developing a tool in partnership with the company will include the highest-grade materials and processes in North America along with the assistance of engineers and tool designers. Standing alongside Tiger Tool’s commitment to innovative tooling solutions is an equal dedication to
safety - especially in an industry where an inherent risk of injury remains. Consider, for example, a technician’s vulnerability when faced with daily tasks such as torching, hammering and punching. Statistics presented by the United States Occupational Safety & Health Administration show alarming risk levels whereby 4.1 million workplace injuries occur every year and at least 12 workplace deaths per day - nearly all of which are preventable. In contrast to tools made of low grade materials which flood the market, Tiger Tool stacks its inventory with tools fashioned from high grade alloys that guarantee strength and wear resistance - a promise backed by warranties that give owners peace of mind. And while the upfront cost of a tool made in North America from high quality steel and alloys will likely be higher than its off-shore counterpart, these tools will pay for themselves in no time. Take for example the company’s 10803 Heavy Duty Yoke Puller. Even with conservative use this tool will pay for itself in a matter of months and continue to earn its customers profits thanks to the high-quality materials, capable of withstanding repeated use even on the toughest jobs. Without question, the physical wellbeing of hard working technicians is of paramount importance. Wellcrafted tools not only minimize risk to technicians, but enhance efficiency and profitability. When choosing unsafe methods of servicing class 7 and 8 trucks, company risk increases - as does the possibility of performing the job at hand the hard way. In many
instances, such as with Tiger Tool’s 15000 Pin and Bushing Starter Kit, the safe way actually equates to the fast way. This means less repair time per truck and a tangible increase to a company’s bottom line. The Tiger Tool Pin and Bushing system eliminates the need for technicians to handle or remove heavy suspension assemblies, and eradicates torching methods that expose employees to senseless hazards - all this while reducing shop time by an average of seventy percent. Safety, enhanced by the correct tools and equipment, also keeps insurance premiums to a minimum by receiving fewer claims and demonstrating to employees that their safety matters. When workers are away due to injury, it not only costs companies additional premiums, but cuts down productivity and undermines profit margins by having a skilled technician off the shop floor for an extended period of time. For more than 30 years Tiger Tool, has subscribed to the belief that necessity is indeed the mother of invention. It has continuously evolved in accordance with the changing needs of the industry and always, like its founder, takes a unique approach to solving problems. As such, the company has established valuable relationships with technicians, fleet and service managers, and OEMs, all of whom entrust them to minimize the challenges technicians are faced with. Tiger Tool has demonstrated time and again that when there is a problem they can solve it. For this reason, several OEMs contact them directly should they discover a challenge servicing one of their components, and at Tiger Tool, they are always more than capable and willing to resolve it. In addition to these relationships, the Tiger Tool Team includes several mechanically inclined individuals who are sensitive to the obstacles technicians face and are equally passionate about improving their working conditions. Trust this privately held specialty manufacturing company to provide solutions to all your tooling needs. Because when you have a Tiger Tool, you know you have what it takes. The Right Tools in Your Toolbox BY JOHN ROGASKY, SALES MANAGER ARNE’S WELDING LTD.
I
had to replace a battery in my mother-in-law’s car last week and came with what I thought was the appropriate tools for the job. I arrived with a couple of wrenches and the new battery. My first attempt was thwarted because the last person to replace this used different hardware to secure the battery, of which I did not bring. After attempting to “get ‘er done”, I returned home with a few skinned knuckles, to get the right tools. This got me to thinking about our customers and the tools in their tool box. Arne’s is a Commercial Trailer Manufacturer out of Winnipeg and has been keeping tools in the toolboxes of construction companies for 60 years. Over that time, the “ultimate” trailer (or tool) has always been on the mind of our Dealers to satisfy the needs of working industry. The trailer that best fits that mark
12 July 2018
in today’s market would be the Ultra Max Side Dump Trailer. This trailer, compared to an End Dump, reduces the need for overhead clearances, is one of the most stable trailers in the industry and has a dump cycle time 4 times faster. With our unique torque tube design, the stresses of a conventional Side Dump are all but eliminated when dumping. The capabilities of this trailer well exceed the expectations with the ability to dump to either side by simply locking the hinges, no climbing on the trailer! As well, our hydraulic design gives each cylinder the right pressure to dump each load effortlessly and evenly. The Ultra Max comes in both a tri-axle and a B Train configuration, to suit all your hauling requirements. When you are on the job-site and “looking for that right tool”, the Arne’s Ultra Max can look after all your needs! The Arne’s tool box does not stop at just the Side Dump trailer. We manufacture a wide variety of trail-
ers to fill that tool box, from conventional End Dumps, Quarter Frames, Hoppers, Live Floors and Lowbeds; to Engineered to Order trailers that are specific to all your moves! All of our trailers are designed with stabil-
ity and longevity in mind, giving us one of the highest resale trailers in the market. Check out our website at www. arnes.com as well as a Dealer near you.

CANBUILT MANUFACTURING
Superior Line of Heavy Duty Equipment
C
anbuilt Manufacturing is a division of Sayco Distributors Ltd., a Canadian company established in 1969, with headquarters in Toronto. Created to offer a superior line of equipment, we are geared to heavy duty industrial applications in oil, mining, trucking, rail and fleet maintenance and automotive industries. Throughout the years, Canbuilt manufacturing has built a strong presence within Canada, maintaining a distributorship network spanning every province. Alongside a manufacturing facility that maintains a strong inventory and warehouse, this enables our product delivery to be both punctual and available across the country. Canbuilt offers a wide range of products; from basic shop tools like safety stands, workbenches and headlight aimers, to heavier equipment like hydraulic presses, floor jacks, vehicle lifts, tire changers, wheel balancers, oil/grease/fluid pumps, air compressors and blast cabinets. We are also proactive in solving unique customer demands of specialized equipment needs, through new product development
and international procurement. Some of the heavy duty equipment we offer is the 4400P mobile crane and our line of 10, 20 and 30 ton safety stands, in low profile, standard, mid and tall sizes, all of which are built in Canada to the North American Safety Standards (ASME) by Canadians. Our mobile cranes are Canbuilt original designs and are made of heavy wall rectangular tubing with large quality casters, allowing for smooth mobility, and a powder coat finish for added durability. Featuring a fine metered hydraulic control for better load handling, telescoping legs in a flow-through base that enable assembly from either the front or back, and individual adjustment for the most difficult scenarios. Plus, when the legs are fully retracted or installed from the back, they allow for counterbalance during applications where frontal clearance is limited, a feature unique to Canbuilt cranes. Our safety stands are well known, valued and trusted, both locally and in the USA, not only for their quality, but also their stress-tested durability. Each safety stand is individually made to produce our level of quality,
and to ensure that Canbuilt remains the preferred stand for the trucking, oil, mining, military and heavy duty industries. Particularly, our TS-20 and TS-21 mobile trailer stands are a staple product for trucking and fleet maintenance. Made in a pyramid design with a wide base for maximum stability, they use a pin system and come with a basic saddle top or optional, flat or saddle screw tops. Our
low profile and standard 10, 20 and 30 ton stands are geared also, to the fleet and automotive industries. Additional information can be found at www.canbuilt.com, or we can be contacted through our Canada only toll free, 888.607.2926. Vocational Trailers
Competitiveness & Efficiency at Western Forest Products
V
ancouver, British Columbia – Canada is the home and native land of Western Forest Products, the largest coastal timberlands operator and lumber producer in British Columbia. For years, the company, which has an annual available harvest greater than 6 million cubic meters (2.5 billion board feet), has relied on a private railway and off-road trucks to move logs to its sort yards, where they then were towed by water to their seven sawmills on Vancouver Island. According to Rick Bitten, Senior Maintenance Manager for Western Forest Products, transporting logs by rail – something the company had been doing for decades, will be replaced by highway truck hauling. The railway was used in conjunction with off-highway trucks capable of hauling 60 to 80 ton loads, which were transferred by a reload to the rail cars. The downside of the “Fat Trucks” is the parts are becoming more difficult to source and they are restricted to off highway hauls. That’s all now changing. In a move that Bitten called an “evolution” to increase cost competitiveness and improve efficiencies, Western Forest Products turned to the Kenworth T880 to do double-duty – transporting timber off – and on-highway. The Western Forest Products fleet numbers 75 trucks, including some well-used Kenworth T800s, and 24 new Kenworth T880s purchased from Inland Kenworth – Campbell River. The T880s were specifically spec’d to handle 60-ton payloads. Specialty features include an 11-5/8inch double frame rail with additional cross-members for added strength, Neway 78,000-pound tridem 54-inch air suspension, and a Meritor 20,000-pound drop axle. Profab Manufacturing added custom cab guards, bunks, and trailer components. “The engineering solution from Kenworth was far more in-depth than the solutions we received from the other OEMs we evaluated,” Bitten said. “There were a whole lot of criteria coming back from Kenworth on what would be required to achieve the 60-ton rating. We liked the idea of them telling us what was required 14 July 2018
to meet the need.” In comparing makes and models, Western Forest Products looked at 40 specific points, including safety, durability, efficiency, serviceability, support, parts availability, and driver comfort, graded on a scale of 1 to 3 with two being average and three being exceptional. “Kenworth and the T880 came out ahead,” Bitten said. Durability was a key factor, as the trucks average 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) of off-road conditions each trip with most trucks making three to five trips a day, depending on haul distance. Some of the mainline roads are fairly well maintained, but spur roads can prove a challenge. The spur roads don’t have a lot of ballast on top, so there can be some really rough surfaces. Any incline above 22 percent is called “steep-slope” hauling; Western Forest Products trucks can face 26 to 28 percent grades. To handle that, the Kenworth T880s are equipped with 565-hp engines and a 5:25 gear ratio. Tridem drive axles with locking differentials, and automated Eaton UltraShift® Plus transmissions – designed for vocational applications and including the Hill Start Aid feature – also help navigate mountain terrain.
“Some of our hauls are very demanding, and driver focus is critical. The UltraShift transmission allows the driver to focus on controlling the truck,” Bitten said. “The Eaton UltraShift is a huge step forward for us,” Bitten added. “We went in that direction because of the age of our workforce, the ergonomics of the transmission and also for the advantages of reduced maintenance costs.” Before the T880s went into service, representatives from Kenworth, Eaton, and Neway provided drivers and mechanics extensive training sessions covering operation of the trucks and components so they’d be ready to manage any situation. According to Bitten, the Kenworth T880 is one of the few trucks in which a driver can actually have three-point contact while climbing in and out of the cab. Kenworth also designed the engine compartment for easy access to maintenance items, and a self-locking mechanism ensures the hood remains in a safe position when open. “These little features benefit both our drivers, and technicians,” Bitten said. And then there are the mirrors – something Bitten liked to point out. “The fat trucks we operate are equipped with ‘West Coast’ style
mirrors that stick out far enough to allow drivers to see past the wide 10-foot, 6-inch bunks,” he said. “But, because of the rough roads, they tend to shake out of adjustment creating delays while readjusting. The T880 solved that issue with standard spec modular mirrors with electronic adjustments.” Bitten said he feels a true partnership among Kenworth, its local dealer, Inland Kenworth – Campbell River and Western Forest. “Our goal is to establish a long term relationship. It’s all about being well supported, getting the right product, and getting through challenges,” he said. “When you’re putting together a log truck, it’s a joint venture,” Bitten concluded. “We had some very indepth things that we wanted done, and Kenworth worked very hard to put the product together that we wanted. It’s been a very successful relationship.” Kenworth is The Driver’s Truck™. See what drivers are saying at www. kenworth.com/drivers. MACK TRUCKS
MP®8HE & HE+ Improved Fuel Efficiency
G
reensboro, North Carolina – To help customers realize maximum fuel efficiency, Mack Trucks has introduced the Mack ® MP®8HE 13-liter engine and the Mack HE+ package for Mack Anthem® models. Mack Anthem models spec’d with the MP8HE engine and HE+ package deliver up to a 9.5 percent improvement in fuel efficiency and achieve the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay designation. The Mack MP8HE engine employs Mack Energy Recovery Technology, which captures waste energy from the engine’s exhaust and converts it to mechanical energy that is delivered back to the engine crankshaft as additional torque. The HE+ package consists of a number of fuel efficiencyenhancing features, including additional aero components that take the superior aerodynamic advantage of the Mack Anthem a step further. “Customers continue to place a heavy emphasis on improving fuel efficiency,” said Jonathan Randall, Mack Trucks Senior Vice President, North American Sales and Marketing. “Combining our advanced, yet reliable Energy Recovery Technology with additional aerodynamic features, we’re able to achieve significant fuel savings without compromising performance.” “By capturing and using waste energy from the exhaust, Mack’s Energy Recovery Technology allows the engine to run at lower RPM for less stress on components,” said Roy
Horton, Mack Trucks Director of Product Strategy. The Mack MP8HE is available exclusively with the Mack mDRIVE™ automated manual transmission. Fully integrated with the engine, the mDRIVE contributes to overall efficiency by constantly monitoring speed, grade and load to identify ideal shift points and help ensure the truck is always in the right gear. The mDRIVE also enables the lower, downspeed cruise RPM to take advantage of the extra torque provided by the Energy Recovery Technology. The Mack HE+ package also features Mack Predictive Cruise, an intelligent system that memorizes a route when cruise control is on, storing up to 4,500 hills in its memory. The next time a driver travels the same route, Mack Predictive Cruise engages the ideal shift strategy for maximum fuel efficiency. In developing the Anthem model, Mack engineers pored over data to design a truck that more easily cuts through the wind. Despite its bold, muscular looks. The Mack MP8HE and HE+ package are now available for order. For more information, please visit www. macktrucks.com/he or the nearest Mack dealer. Petro-Canada Lubricants
By Brian Humphrey, OEM Technical Liaison
Results of Extending Oil Drain Intervals
O
ne focus of the API CK-4 and FA-4 standards is the potential to deliver extended drain capabilities for fleets across North America. Meeting these standards, oils are more robust and resistant to oxidation, which means there is the ability to extend drain intervals with no compromise to engine protection and up time. However, fleet owners should be aware that determination of oil change intervals should only be done after reviewing OEM recommendations, consulting with your expert lubricant supplier and conducting a trial – supported by used oil analysis sampling, to ensure any extension is based on sound scientific data. THE ROLE OF LUBRICANTS Before extending drain intervals, it is important to fully understand the crucial role that engine lubricants play. Heavy duty engine oils help minimize frictional losses between moving components, which can result in less viscous drag, improved
20 July 2018
fuel economy, as well as reduced pumping and spinning losses. The move towards low viscosity oils has enhanced this, as they require less work to move through the engine and can flow faster. To address the challenges raised by new engines, in particular their higher operating temperatures that can stress conventional lubricants and accelerate the rate of oxidization and degradation, the newer API CK-4 and FA-4 oils offer greater resistance to oxidation, improved aeration control and shear stability. When combined, these features improve the protection of the engine, allowing it to use less fuel and produce fewer emissions, and therefore run more efficiently. OPTIMUM DRAINS GAIN RESULTS To put our oil to the test, we introduced the DURON™ Challenge program to test our DURON next generation product line in real world fleets. The Challenge gives fleet owners and operators a free trial of DURON for
use in one or more of their vehicles, providing them with the opportunity to discover its high performance and value, supported with oil analysis and expert technical support. DLM Trucking, a family-owned trucking business based in Washington, United States, with a fleet of over 50 trucks, took on the DURON Challenge. DLM saw the positive results from the DURON Challenge almost immediately and were able to directly compare the performance of DURON against the competitor oil they had previously used for more than 30 years: • Drain intervals doubled from 32,000 kms to 64,000 kms* • Essentially no oil consumption in the first 32,000 kms using DURON. With DLM’s previous supplier, one gallon of oil was consumed within the first 20,000 kms • The engine oil’s Base Number (BN) at 32,000 kms was 2.5 times better with DURON than it had been with
DLM’s previous oil. Resistance to oxidation and nitration, and viscosity retention also improved. Speaking about the success of the Challenge, Larry Slavens, Operations Manager at DLM Trucking said, “The results we have seen are remarkable – it doesn’t get any better than this!” The figures clearly demonstrate the potential extension to oil drain intervals and the cost savings that can be achieved by transitioning to DURON heavy duty engine oil. By taking on the DURON Challenge, fleet owners and operators looking to make a change can discover the performance improvements and optimized oil drain intervals that can be achieved with expert lubricant support. To find out more about the DURON Challenge, visit DURONChallenge. com. * Extending drain intervals should always be undertaken in conjunction with an oil analysis program. ™ Owned or used under license.

Tires & Wheels
By Jeffrey Parks, Managing Director, Retread Tire Association
You Have Questions About Retreads? We Have Answers Q. Do any standards, federal or industry; govern the safety and quality of retreads? A. Yes. Retreaded passenger car tires are manufactured according to standards established by the U.S. Department of Transportation and must carry a code number in the tire’s sidewall indicating when and where the retreaded tire was manufactured. Retreaded truck tires must also carry a DOT code number. Q. Can radial tires be retreaded? A. Yes. Steel belted as well as nonsteel belted radial tires can be retreaded, both in truck and passenger tires. Q. Are retreads as safe as comparable new tires? A. Yes. U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) show that nearly all tires involved in any tire related accidents were underinflated or bald. Properly maintained tires - both new and retreaded - do not cause accidents. Retreaded tires have been safely used by school buses, commercial and military airlines, fire engines and other emergency vehicles, all size trucks, taxis, racecars and passenger vehicles for years. There is no evidence that indicates retreads are less safe than new tires. Q. Can retreads be driven at highway speeds? A. Yes. Retreaded tires can be driven at the same speeds as comparable new tires with no loss in safety, handling or comfort. Q. What causes tire debris (rubber on the road) on our highways? A. Rubber on the road comes from both new tires and retreads. Nearly all rubber on the road comes from truck tires and is caused by underinflation, overloading, mismatching of tires in dual wheel positions and tire abuse, as opposed to poor product quality. To blame retreads for rubber on the road is the same as blaming a vehicle for an accident caused by a drunk driver. The blame is simply misplaced. Q. Are there any driving conditions where retreads should not be driven? A. No. A retreaded tire can be driven in whatever conditions a new tire can be driven. Q. Are warranties offered with retreaded tires? A. Yes. In fact most retreaded tires generally will carry a more extensive warranty than a comparable new tire. 22    July 2018
Q. How long will retreads last? A. With proper care and maintenance, a retreaded tire can provide the same amount of service and tire life as a comparable new tire. Q. What are some of the economic benefits of retreaded tires? A. Passenger tire retreads can save a motorist about 25 to 30 percent over the cost of a comparable new tire. Savings on truck tires are greater. The cost of
freight hauled by trucks would be significantly higher if it were not for retreaded tires. Q. How about the environmental benefits offered by retreaded tires? A. A retreaded tire is a recycled tire. Millions of worn tires can be saved from the scrap pile every year to help produce a safe and dependable product for motorists while also providing serious economic savings. Retreading makes
this possible. Since tires contain a large percentage of synthetic oil, which is petroleum based, the retread industry is responsible for saving the planet hundreds of millions of gallons of oil every year. Retreading is truly recycling! For more information about the economic and environmental benefits of retreading, please visit www.retreadtire. org or email us at info@reteadtire.org.

MINIMIZER BANDIT BIG RIG SERIES
Bandit Series Event in Cedar Rapids Postponed Until July 29th
C
edar Rapids, Iowa - The Bandits tried to get in and out of Hawkeye Downs Speedway Saturday, June 9 without incident, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Severe weather, including a tornado warning, forced Bandit promoters to postpone the event until Sunday, July 29th. “We gave it our best shot and thought the weather would cooperate, but during the first Challenge race of the evening, we had to postpone,” Bandit General Manager Jason Johnson said. “The most important thing is keeping everyone safe, including the Bandits and our fans.” The results from Saturday night, which include three Heat races as well as the Bandit Shoot Out, will count in the point standings. The rescheduled
date will see the Bandits pick things up starting with the first of two Challenge races. “We’ll run the two Challenge races and the A-Main Feature on the 29th, beginning at 1 p.m.” Johnson said. All tickets from this past Saturday’s event will be honored on July 29th. Fans should bring their tickets or wristbands to the gate that day. “We will always try to make it right,” Johnson said. “Our fans deserve the best, so we aim to give them the best.” Next up for the Bandits is their firstever stop in Pennsylvania. They’ll be at Lake Erie Speedway in North East on Saturday, July 7th. For additional information, please contact Jason Johnson at 507.676.1987, or email jason@banditseries.com.

Transportation Risk-Management Consultant Uses CarriersEdge to Provide Effective, Verifiable Training for Clients
S
hane Cutler started his consulting firm to help trucking companies cope with regulations and improve their safety performance just two years ago, and he’s already up to more than 150 fleets in Ontario, with plans to expand to other regions of Canada. His Ontario-based company, Cutler TCMS (Transportation Compliance Management Services) provides risk assessment, driver training and regulatory compliance to freight-hauling companies ranging in size from small operators to large fleets. His job is to identify the potential hazards and risky practices that could, if not corrected, eventually get a carrier into trouble. To do his job effectively means some occasionally blunt conversations with clients. He has told a few, “If I owned this company I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.” A leading cause of such sleeplessness, and trouble down the road, is the lack of a strong drivertraining program, which Cutler considers key to safe operating. “If I talk to a company and they’re not interested in driver training, we don’t want to work with them.” That’s where the CarriersEdge suite of online training modules for drivers, and the management tracking and administrative tools to back them up,
28 July 2018
comes in. There are lots of training programs out there, Cutler says, but he uses CarriersEdge because of how it addresses the problems he helps customers solve through its emphasis on verifiable training. The word “verifiable,” Cutler adds, is just as important as the word “training.” Cutler knew of the CarriersEdge program through the companies he worked at before launching his own consulting firm. That experience was what convinced him to include it as an integral part of the menu of services he provides. Cutler is a fan of CarriersEdge training for several reasons. First, there’s the breadth and depth of course titles and subjects. Cutler uses CarriersEdge courses on topics including hours-ofservice rules, pre-trip inspections and driver fatigue, in orientation programs for new drivers. To make sure everyone is on the same page in terms of safety policies, Cutler has everyone in the company, including managers and office workers, take the training. “It sets a standard for the whole company,” he says. He also likes the interactive structure of CarriersEdge courses, in which quizzes test and enhance retention and recall of course material. It’s one
thing to hold a drivers’ meeting, show a training video and assume that’s good enough. Cutler likes the fact that CarriersEdge course-management tools track a driver’s participation and progress, including retakes to improve performance. With an increasingly multi-cultural and multi-lingual transportation workforce, having courses in Spanish, French and even Punjabi means fleet managers know they’ve communicated vital safety practices and policies to drivers in languages they’re comfortable in. But perhaps the most attractive element is that element of verification. Regulators like Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation require companies to maintain documented proof that the driver is qualified. For some companies and programs, Cutler says, that recordkeeping consists of a sign-in sheet at a driver meeting, or having the driver sign the back of a training booklet that gets thrown in a file cabinet. Some, he adds, don’t even do that much. That’s a problem when a company finds itself in court. “Without the verified training in the files, you can only assume the company didn’t do what it was supposed to do,” he says. CarriersEdge, by contrast, is not just a collection of courses but a training management system that tracks drivers’ participation and performance. “CarriersEdge shows the interaction between the driver and the actual course,” Cutler says. “It’s a way of keeping people accountable and the company compliant with regulations.” The cost of using such a program, he adds, is minimal compared with the cost of being found out of compliance with regulations or liable for an
Shane Cutler – Director at National Risk Solutions – Cutler TCMS Inc. accident on the grounds of insufficient training. That’s why Cutler puts such an emphasis on verifiable training, provided through CarriersEdge, as a crucial element – “adding concrete to the foundation,” as he puts it – in how he helps companies increase safety and reduce risk. Cutler has more than two decades of professional experience in transportation, beginning as a driver and working his way through a series of safety, training and compliance positions before launching his own company in 2016. Based on that experience, Cutler calls CarriersEdge “the best tool there is” for providing drivers training and verifying they’ve received it. “There’s nothing better.” Partnering with CarriersEdge, he adds, “has been a large part of our growth. It provides accurate, updated information that drivers need to know, in a format that’s easy to use and manage and that gets results. That gives us an added level of credibility with our clients.”

STEMCO TrailerTail Used for New Concept Vehicle
L
ongview, Texas – STEMCO ® has partnered with Shell and the AirFlow Truck Company to provide a custom TrailerTail® for the new Starship concept vehicle. With STEMCO’s help, Shell and the AirFlow Truck Company aim to use the Starship’s innovative aerodynamic design to change how efficiency is measured and addressed in the commercial trucking industry. The STEMCO TrailerTail improves fuel economy by streamlining airflow at the back of the trailer to reduce rear drag and increase fuel efficiency. It also improves safety by helping stabilize trailers and increasing visibility for the driver. The Starship concept vehicle is a complete tractor-trailer Class 8 integrated system. It features a 400-hp Cummins X15 engine running on specially formulated Shell ROTELLA® T6 Ultra 5W-30 low-viscosity API FA-4 engine oil. It also has a solar array on top of the trailer to power interior electronic accessories. Shell and the AirFlow Truck Company have been designing and building the prototype since 2015, and it made its debut at the Technology & Maintenance Council Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibition (the TMC Show) in Atlanta on March 5. In May this year, the Starship truck conducted a coast-to-coast trip with a full load of real cargo. The California-to-Florida drive showcased the real-world application of the rig and set initial fuel economy numbers. “The Starship vehicle looks to reach new heights when it comes to fuel

economy, and we are honoured to help them achieve those results,” said Drake Piper, Category Director for ITMS at STEMCO. “Our innovative aerodynamic technology matches their vision, and together we’ve created a glimpse into the future of commercial trucking, a future that many fleets can begin to achieve today by utilizing the STEMCO TrailerTail.

Supplements for Truckers
W
hether you eat a perfectly healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables or you rely solely on fast food, it’s important to consider whether you could benefit from any types of supplements. The majority of drivers struggle with getting enough fruits and veggies, unprocessed meats and fibre. This leaves a lot of gaps in their diet, which can be filled with the right products. You don’t need to take a lot of different supplements, but you should consider starting with 1 or 2 depending on your health and diet/lifestyle. The following are the most common supplements that would benefit a trucker, so read on to determine what could work for you! Multivitamins: Almost every driver could benefit from taking a highquality multivitamin, as it’s difficult to eat a nutrient-dense diet on the road (even if you cook a lot of your own food). This will reduce deficiencies, boost your immune system, help to improve your overall health, can increase energy, reduce risk of disease, and much more. Head to a health food store (most malls have them) and ask for a high quality multivitamin. Traditional pharmacies carry a very limited selection of vitamins, and they are typically lower quality, which means your body won’t absorb the nutrients efficiently; that’s where the term “expensive pee” comes from! Specific Vitamins: Whether you take a multivitamin or not, there may be other vitamins you are lacking or deficient in, such as B12, Zinc, iron, etc. Have your doctor (or a Naturopathic Doctor) run a detailed nutrient panel to see what you could use. Vitamin C is great for boosting the immune system, especially while travelling, dealing with a stressful lifestyle, and not having access to a lot of fresh fruits and veggies. I recommend taking Vitamin D in the winter as it’s difficult to get enough through our diet and we receive limited sunshine during those months, which is how our bodies make Vitamin D. Protein: Protein deficiencies aren’t as common amongst the general population as protein powder companies would like us to think, but it can be tricky to find high quality
protein (from meat) sources while on the road. Most of the meat available in restaurants is processed in some way, so I recommend cutting back on it. Finding a clean protein powder (or collagen powder) is a great way to add a little protein to your meals or snacks. Fibre: Limited fruits and veggies are an issue here again, as well as processed foods containing little fibre. To improve regularity, feel full longer, improve blood sugar and more, con-
sider adding in a fibre supplement. Pick up psyllium husk or ground flax seeds (at any bulk food store) and add it to smoothies, yogurt, oats, or even to a glass of water. Omega-3: These fatty acids help to reduce inflammation and are important for brain health. The standard North American diet is very high in Omega-6 fatty acids, which contributes to inflammation and other health issues, so balancing the ratio with
Omega-3’s can be very beneficial. They can be purchased in a pill or liquid form. Whichever supplements you choose to go with, be sure to run them by your doctor first to make sure they won’t interact with any medication you’re on or health issues you have. Stay consistent so you can receive the benefits and see the changes, and then you can adjust your supplement routine as needed.

Smuggling in the Aggregate, Tankers, Forestry & Construction Industries
A
lthough the type of tractor and/or trailer differs depending on the specific industry and goods carried, safety & compliance is always important. Drug smugglers have no real “personal borders”, where they can find a way to smuggle drugs and make tons of money, with no care or concern for the ramifications, they will. The drug cartels look for the weakest link when they target cross-border cargo, truck drivers are a key component of the supply chain so they target them. Often the bribe smugglers offer is such a large sum of money that it seems too attractive to say no. Even worse are the threats that come with those offers, the cartel will threaten to kidnap or even worse, kill their families. In the world of the Aggregate trucks, safety is so important; remember the dump truck with its raised bucket that smashed into the Burlington Skyway Bridge? Unfortunately the driver had been drinking alcohol which resulted in over a million dollars of damage and the bridge was closed down for four days. This bridge carries 80,000 vehicles per day and because of this incident it was closed down for four days. Modified tanker trucks are at the center of a new wave of drug smuggling with the movement of illegal arms, the drug cartels are targeting hazmat carriers. Even in the land of Agriculture carriers, drugs are being hidden in loads carrying everything from tomatoes to peppers, bananas and even lettuce. Loads containing coffee or coffee beans are often targeted by drug smugglers who assume that the DDS, Detector Dogs Service won’t be able to smell the contraband. Well these special officers of the canine group are specifically trained to detect the drugs and will find them! Whilst carrying a logging load to be used in the construction industry, an Ontario driver was convicted of trafficking $120 million worth of cocaine that he had hidden on his truck which he crossed the USA border into Canada. In the world of trucking, smuggling has become a disease and we need to fight it! Do your 17 point inspections pre and post shipments, check your loads, make sure you know what you are carrying at all times, lock your trac32 July 2018
tor and seal your trailer when crossing any border point. If someone offers you a deal that seem too good to be true, it is! Say No! If someone threatens you or your family, call 911, if you find yourself in a position where you are in danger, if you can, still dial 911 and drop your phone near you or into your pocket, if you can say somehow that you are in trouble, can mention someone following you or that you have been threatened, the operator will triangulate your whereabouts and dispatch help right away. For more information about aiding in the fight against smuggling, terrorism and safety & compliance programs such as C-TPAT, FAST, PIP, TTP, AEO, CSA, please contact Cross Border Services at www.crossborderservices.ca, email dawntruell@gmail.com.

How it works: 1. Pressurized air from the tanker air supply travels along the air supply line to a filter. 2. Air is filtered through a self-draining filter to remove any impurities. 3. Pressurized air flows into the control box where the pressure is regulated to the pre-set tire psi. 4. Regulated air flows from the control box through the hollow axle tube to the rotary union (“Thru Tee”). 5. Air is transmitted as needed via the rotary union, through the tire hoses and into the tires. “MTIS uses proven technology to minimize total cost of ownership and help keep drivers safe on our highways,” said Dave Pritchard, General Manager, Trailer for Meritor. “It’s also quick to service and easy to retrofit.” More than 8 million fleet tires are protected by MTIS. Almost one in every three trailers built today is specified with the tire inflation system. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies, tire inflation systems extend tire life by 10 percent and increase fuel economy an average 1.4 percent. MTIS also decreases maintenance costs due to longer intervals between retreads and less time spent on manual pressure checking and filling. By preventing under-inflation, MTIS helps to reduce the risk of accidents. Standard ThermALERT wheel-end heat sensing technology helps prevent July 2018 33
Business Insurance Matters
By Linda Colgan
An Analysis of the Insurance Industry in 2018
T
he last time that we entered a hard market was approximately ten years ago. Many may not remember, some were not in the industry to understand and many will never forget. We have advanced in the ten years since, but amidst challenges of weather, population, currency differences, and human error, losses have escalated. The insurance industry has to isolate the profitability of each “line” of business. Auto insurance in Ontario continues to be plagued by unfavorable negative results. This has forced our industry to inflict hardened unwavering rules and in some instances, elimination to participate in specific niche markets. Transportation is one niche industry that continues to deter the weak of heart and invite only seasoned veterans to offer coverage for a premium. The expectations of transportation insurance companies have now seemed to unite. One voice is being heard – that average and above risks will be entertained and those risks that have permitted the public profiles to diminish will not be rehabilitated by loss prevention efforts of the Insurer. If the mindset of the carrier has changed with regards to safety, so must the decision of the underwriter to exposure their employer to continuing poor performance. Not only does the loss performance speak volumes, the public profiles and company policy and procedures are instant references and equally of importance. I believe the past year has been unprecedented with driver acceptance. These actions have been forced on the industry. Depending on the blemishes on the drivers’ abstracts both carriers and insurers are reluctance to adopt possible risk. Driver abstracts speak to driving habits and potential risk. One ticket catapults the candidate into an analytical profile dictating the probability of an accident occurring. Two tickets only escalate these possibilities. We are half way through the year. For carriers with insurance policies renewing at the latter half of the year, you are fortunate. You have had ample advance warning to correct what has been wrong. An advantage more so than many other carriers that

renewed at the offset of the year. If all forge forward with the united message of safety at the forefront and profitability for all - 2019 will prove to be much better for all. Transport For Christ
By Chaplain Len Reimer
You Are Unique, Not the Product of Some Cosmic Assembly Line
“T
here are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal,” wrote C.S. Lewis. It’s true – each one of us is a special creation of God. Believe it or not – no one else is just like you. Your physical appearance, your voice and personality traits, your habits, intelligence, personal tastes, all of these make you one of a kind. Even your fingerprints distinguish you from every other human being-past, present, or future. You are not the product of some cosmic assembly line; you are unique. But the most important fact of your identity is that God created you in His image (Genesis 1:27). He made you so you could share in His creation, could love and laugh and know Him person to person. You are special indeed! The Bible reveals God’s total interest in you as an individual. The psalmist wrote in one of his most
beautiful prayers, “I will praise Thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). God knew you even before you were born. Then, and now, He has plans just for you, plans, conceived in love. As we appreciate God’s constant concern for us, we really begin to grasp the awfulness of sin. He loves you and me so much; yet how often we go our own way, turning our backs on Him. God’s designs for our lives are then blocked; His mercies do not come to the unwilling. But even here we are precious to God, for He continues to love us even when we pay Him no mind. He still sees us as individuals with great value. No wonder the psalmist declared, “How precious are Thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand” (Psalm 139:17-18). God is not an unfeeling, cold-hearted
monarch of the heavens. He feels our pains; He shares our sorrows. He cares, and He considers each one of us important enough to love. Yes because we are special to God,
He wants to forgive us and give us a full, meaningful life. Yes, you are valuable to God! If you have never put your trust into Christ before, please do it now.

TRUCKING HR CANADA
A Roadmap Focused on Recruiting & Retaining Indigenous Peoples
O
ttawa, Ontario - Trucking HR Canada has launched its new report Indigenous Recruitment & Retention: A Roadmap for Canada’s Trucking a n d Logistics Industry, to support industry employers in their efforts to better attract and retain Indigenous employees. The number of Indigenous workers in the trucking and logistics industry continues to remain well b e l o w t h e average for the Canadian workforce. Yet, they represent a significant untapped labour pool. Employers in the trucking and logistics industry, as well as other like-minded industries in Canada, have achieved important business benefits by successfully hiring Indigenous peoples. Their experience shows that success will come from being intentionally inclusive in their recruitment and retention practices. Trucking HR Canada engaged with Indigenous communities and interviewed trucking and logistics employers to better understand their perspective on the industry and the opportunities and barriers that exist for recruitment and retention. The report highlights the findings from the interviews as well as practical steps to support more diverse recruitment and retention efforts. The report provides a roadmap for community outreach, recruitment and hiring, orientation and onboarding and a section on available training resources. “Indigenous peoples are the fastest growing demographic in Canada. In light of the current labour shortages industry employers are facing, implementing innovative recruitment and retention initiatives to reach out to these communities is not only the right thing to do, it is a business imperative”, said Angela Splinter,
CEO of Trucking HR Canada. At a time where the driver shortage is top-of-mind for all trucking and logistics employers, this practical resource can support those interested in attracting, recruiting, and retaining w o r k e r s from largely untapped labour pools. Keeping Your Vehicles Clean
By Jack Jackson
Top 5 Results of Clean Trucks
T
here are many reasons to have a clean truck. We thought we would list the top 5 results of a clean truck this month as we are into the most difficult time to keep any vehicle clean, summer. 1. Company image is enhanced. The public view of your company is a professional image that you truly care about the way you are portrayed on the highways and customers’ locations. If you care about your image it is perceived that you care about your business, your employees and your customers. 2. Employee morale increases. Just as anyone who washes their car feels a sense of pride and for some reason, the car just drives a little better; it is the same for your employees. Especially your drivers. Imagine showing up to a dirty, dusty office building every day with grime and filth. Imagine if your computer screen, your window to the world in
38 July 2018
your office, was filthy and the screen was full of dead bug parts and a film of dirt. Not a good feeling to start your day. Even employees who don’t drive the trucks have a sense of pride for the company seeing crisp, clean trucks in the parking lot ready to drive to their customers. 3. Vehicles last longer. Ask any mechanic or auto manufacturer, never washing your vehicle only leads to issues, no matter which area of the continent you live. Salt and dust, dirt and oil not only lead to rust on the body, the inner parts of your vehicle’s underside begin to feel the lack of care as well. People respect clean vehicles and will go out of their way to make sure they take care of them. It just makes common sense. 4. L o w e r s o v e r a l l c o s t o f maintenance. Just as #3 adds life to a vehicle, washing more often lowers the cost of maintenance on brakes, body and electronic, handles, the list
goes on. Just as any machinery that is ignored, it breaks down sooner and costs more inevitably for replacement parts or complete replacement. 5. Customer Referrals. By showing you care about your staff, your vehicles and your company leads
great customer base? Ask yourself the question, “What do their vehicles look like?” I think you will find the answer on how they view their image. Awash Systems Corp. is the premier wash design company that solves washing where no one else
