On behalf of the Ardmore Chamber of Commerce, the Ardmore Tourism Authority, and the Ardmore Development Authority, I am pleased to welcome you to our community. Ardmore is fortunate to have such a network of stakeholders who share a vision for a thriving, inclusive community. These individuals come from many walks of life, including our major employers, long-time families, and recent additions to the community, all of whom work hard every day to make Ardmore a great place to live, work, and play.

The Chamber and our Authorities work together with our city, county, state, and tribal partners to build a strong business case for why Ardmore is an ideal destination for businesses and visitors alike. Our prime location on I-35 between Oklahoma City and Dallas-Fort Worth means we can offer a small town feel with access to big city amenities, like professional sports and world class arts, just 90 minutes away. Our region also offers incredible recreational assets near Ardmore, which include the Arbuckle Mountains to our north, Lake Murray to our south, and multiple lakes in and around our community. Ardmore is truly hidden gem in South Central Oklahoma.

HISTORY OF ARDMORE

Twenty years before Oklahoma gained statehood, Ardmore was established in 1887 when the Santa Fe Railway settled a train track through a ranch in the former Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. By the 1890s, Ardmore grew from a cattle-loading station and a regional trading post into the largest inland cotton market in the world with over 2,500 residents. During its early years of incorporation, the area suffered setbacks. Soil depletion ruined the cotton crops. A raging fire destroyed the town’s buildings in 1895 and Ardmore’s downtown was again struck by disaster in 1915 after an oil tank explosion killed and injured many. Through it all, the locals showed grit and determination. The community banded together and rebuilt the town better and stronger. In 1913, the Healdton oil fields were discovered west of Ardmore and brought booming growth to the city.

Whether you’re visiting or looking for a new place to call home, you will be greeted with open arms and invited to stay awhile! ARDMORE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Since 1914, the Ardmore Chamber of Commerce has been a champion of business prosperity and the quality of life in the community. The Chamber represents hundreds of southern Oklahoma businesses and organizations of all sizes and industries. Their plan of work includes enhanced quality of education, workforce development initiatives, government relations, public policy, and business development. Through the Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the Chamber runs programs such as Leadership Ardmore and Youth Leadership Ardmore.

ARDMORE DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY

The Ardmore Development Authority supports the retention and growth of existing employers within the city and attracts new companies offering high-impact industrial jobs. The ADA provides individualized insight, connections, research, and data throughout the business development process. They assist with site selection processes and identify financial incentives and training opportunities. The ADA also owns three industrial parks.

ARDMORE TOURISM AUTHORITY

The Ardmore Tourism Authority’s mission is to promote Ardmore as a unique and preferred destination for business, sports, and leisure travel The ATA seeks out conventions, meetings, sporting events, group tours, and individual travelers to Ardmore, maximizing the use of available hotel rooms, facilities, and attractions. Their work increases economic contributions to area businesses and governments through increased visitor spending. Ardmore has so much to offer, and the ATA has the exciting privilege of sharing that with the world!

Additionally, the ATA’s Ardmore Convention Center is a premier event venue with 13 meeting rooms and 54,000 rentable square feet. The facility’s various room sizes and offerings make it a perfect venue for everything from professional trainings, conferences, meetings, exhibitions, weddings, family gettogethers, and more.

ARDMORE CHAMBER AMBASSADORS AT WORK

The Ardmore Chamber Ambassadors are a dedicated group of volunteers that promote goodwill to Chamber and Community members and serve as the welcoming arm of the Chamber. They integrate members into the Chamber’s programs and services by meeting and greeting at Ribbon Cuttings, Member Showcases, and other events. They promote attendance and participation at Chamber events, help publicize Chamber events, and so much more. Their dedication to serve is apparent with their increased visibility to members, by promoting membership growth through local hospitality, and by representing these goals and objectives of the Chamber while acting as a link between members and the Board of Directors.

Ardmore Public Schools

Serves: Pre-K through 12th Grade

District area: Ardmore, Oklahoma (NE area)

Enrollment: 2,591 Student/Teacher Ratio: 16:1

Mascot: Tigers

History: After 25 meetings over a period of seven months, Ardmore City Schools opened their doors for the first time on September 20, 1899 while the area was still Indian Territory. First Superintendent J.R. Hendrix reported that 761 students attended the first month of School.

Lone Grove Public Schools

Serves: Pre-K through 12th Grade

District area: Lone Grove, OK and the surrounding area (west of Ardmore)

Enrollment: 1,447 Student/Teacher Ratio: 15:1

Mascot: Longhorns

History: Lone Grove Public School began with a twoteacher staff established in 1887. Lone Grove Schools has become the largest employer in Lone Grove, now employing 178 faculty and staff.

Plainview Public Schools

Serves: Pre-K through 12th Grade

District area: Ardmore, Oklahoma (SW area)

Enrollment: 1,554 Student/Teacher Ratio: 15:1

Mascot: Indians

History: There are no known documents giving the exact date when the Plainview School building was completed or when the first class entered Plainview, although the October 28, 1909 The Daily Ardmoreite newspaper stated the rural school would open November 1st for winter session.

Springer Public Schools

Serves: Pre-K through 12th Grade

District area: Cities of Springer, Gene Autry, and the surrounding area (north of Ardmore)

Enrollment: 234 Student/Teacher Ratio: 10:1

Mascot: Cardinals

History: Springer Public School was established around 1907 at the time of Oklahoma Statehood and was named after Cattle Rancher W.A. Springer.

Dickson Public Schools

Serves: Pre-K through 12th Grade District area: Dickson, Oklahoma and the surrounding area (east of Ardmore)

Enrollment: 1,370 Student/Teacher Ratio: 18:1

Mascot: Comets

History: The rock building where all students originally attended classes is still actively used. Now, the district has grown across five sites all on the same campus. Dickson Schools was named after Arthur E. Dickson, the Carter County Superintendent of Schools in the 1920s.

Southern Tech

Offers: Vocational and Technical Higher Education Service area: Parts of Carter, Garvin, Jefferson, Johnston, Love, Marshall, and Murray Counties

Enrollment: 574 full-time students & 7,750 Workforce Development students

History: In August of 1966, Southern Oklahoma Area Vocational and Technical Center opened as a part of Ardmore Public School District. It was governed by the Ardmore Board of Education through June of 1977, when the district was formed into a separate vocational-technical school district.

Oak Hall Episcopal School

Serves: Age 3 through 8th grade

Service area: Carter, Love, Marshall, and Murray Counties

Enrollment: 130 Student/Teacher Ratio: 5:1

Mascot: Owls

History: Oak Hall was established in 1977 as an independent, private school by a group of local parents. It has grown through multiple campuses before reaching its current location at the corner of Mt. Washington Road and Veterans Blvd. Oak Hall Episcopal School was the first private school to receive Model School status.

Murray State College

Offers: Academic and Technical Higher Education Service area: Atoka, Bryan, Carter, Coal, Garvin, Johnston, Love, Marshall, Murray, and Pontotoc Counties

Enrollment: 2,238

Mascot: Aggies

History: Granted college status in 1922, Murray State awarded its first associate degrees in 1924. Murray State College became a comprehensive community college, offering a full range of academic and technical programs leading to associate degrees. Today, the college offers a wide range of online degree programs and enrolls hundreds of high school students in concurrent programs, including America’s only Bachelor of Applied Technology degree in Gunsmithing Technology.

At The Good Shepherd, We Do Healthcare Differently.

Since 1996, The Good Shepherd Community Clinic, Inc. (GSCC) has grown from the original Tuesday night volunteer clinic in a small rental house treating 85 patients to a full-time, comprehensive Community Health Center caring for more than 9,600 medical and dental patients.

Today, our vision is to transform healthcare delivery by empowering each other, inspiring change, and building healthy people. The GSCC Team is committed to promoting patient wellness with an emphasis on prevention as well as education on important health factors like nutrition, disease self-management and physical activity. Evidence of this commitment to "build healthy people" can be seen in the way we practice.

MERCY HOSPITAL ARDMORE

The Sisters of Mercy ministry was founded by Catherine McAuley in Dublin, Ireland in 1827 to serve women and children in need. Mercy in the United States traces its roots to 1843, when the first Sisters of Mercy arrived from Ireland. In 1856 the Sisters of Mercy came to St. Louis and founded the Religious Sisters of Mercy of the St. Louis Province.

Fifteen years later, in 1871, they opened a 25-bed infirmary

for women and children. Over the years, the Sisters of Mercy expanded their health ministry in the Regional Community’s sevenstate area: Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.

In 1898, five Sisters of Mercy looked out over the rolling hills of southern Oklahoma and decided to call it home.

They may not have envisioned that the ministry they were beginning would flourish and transform into the Mercy Hospital Ardmore we know today.

In 1996, the hospital officially becomes “Mercy Memorial Health Center” and over the next 27 years, Mercy Ardmore expanded its physical footprint in the Ardmore community as well as services.

Mercy Hospital Ardmore is a 190-bed hospital that has 895 coworkers and over 100 active staffed physicians. In the last fiscal year, Mercy Ardmore had:

• 79,300 outpatient visits

• 32,714 ER visits

• 5,010 inpatient discharges

• performed 3,913 surgeries

• assisted in 745 births

Mercy Ardmore provides Carter County residents access to services including a birthplace, cancer center, cardiovascular care, emergency care, joint replacement center, imaging, therapy and more.

Mercy Clinic is a network of over 2,300 primary and specialty care physicians and practitioners across Mercy’s multi-state service area committed to a better way to provide care. Linked by a sophisticated electronic health record system, these professionals share information to seamlessly collaborate – creating a highly coordinated, personal health care experience for all those we serve.

Looking back, Nick Oxley can see the factors and choices that led to his struggle with addiction and depression. One parent left the family during his formative years. The other was an enabler. Both were addicts.

As a 19-year-old, he vividly recalls a parent giving him opioids to cope with emotional and physical pain, a moment that sparked a cycle in his life.

“I think about it often,” Oxley said. “I used to say that I didn’t have any traumatic events in my life, but then I look at my parents, who both had addictions. I see how I grew up, then I look at what happened in my 20s. I can see it now.”

After a stint in the Army, which took him from his home in Oklahoma to the other side of the globe and back again, he felt lost without his surrogate military family. His brothers in arms were gone, and the parent who raised him was dealing with her own addiction battle. Oxley found solace in a relationship with his girlfriend; however, when that relationship ended he dove into his drug use and began a 10-year battle with depression.

“When you don’t have someone to turn to, you turn to something else,” he said. “I turned to something synthetic. When you’re using, your body doesn’t have to temporarily deal with the problems, so you become biologically addicted.”

Oxley’s addiction hit an “alltime low” when he was 25. He had lost just about everything – relationships, home, car and hope. He bounced from opioids to heroine to meth, anything he could consume to escape the everintensifying nightmare that was his life. Warrants had been issued for his arrest. He knew it was time for a change.

He tried to get clean by himself, but the snare of addiction caught him again and again. It would be five more years of repeating the cycle of pain, drugs, depression back to drugs.

At 30 years old, Oxley heard about Lighthouse Wellness Behavioral Centers when another addict mentioned it in passing. “I could not stop myself from using. I did not have the will,” he said. “I just thought: if I can get in the program, they can help me. So that’s what I did.”

Lighthouse supports individuals, children and families as they walk their mental health and addiction journeys.

“We believe in recovery,” said Jessica Pfau, Lighthouse CEO. “We believe in meeting people where they are. We strive to rebuild hope and give our clients the tools they need to be successful.”

When Oxley arrived at the Lighthouse clinic in Ardmore for the first time, he was in a state of utter disarray. He was scared to face the battle ahead, and even more scared to try sobriety again and fail. Why would this be any different, he thought. Why would this turn it all around? But he took the first step – the hardest step – and walked into the clinic. This single decision changed his life forever.

Oxley entered the facility. He walked to the front desk. He filled out the paperwork and went through the assessment. He was given a prescription to help ease his body’s cravings for drugs. He made the daily decisions to return, to keep trying, to follow the plan the Lighthouse team outlined for him.

He started group counseling. It helped. He started individual counseling. It helped more. And he kept making the daily decisions to move forward.

“It had been a long way down, and it was a long way back up, but there was gradual, noticeable improvement,” Oxley said. “I felt like the Lighthouse counselors and staff cared and listened. They were there for me.”

Things changed slowly. It was a marathon of daily effort, but soon he gained momentum.

“My goal was to be free of all of this,” he said. “That was my goal going in. That was my goal on my last day. That is my goal today.”

Now in his early 30s, Oxley has been living a sober life for about two years. He continues monthly counseling sessions with his Lighthouse counselor to help keep him grounded and have someone to help sort through emotional situations without judgment.

“My experience at Lighthouse has been nothing short of excellent,” Oxley said. “They were all caring and attentive people. They have wonderful counselors and staff working here. I really appreciate everything they have done for me.”

Oxley’s story is not an uncommon one. More than 50 million Americans suffer with at least one form of mental illness, and more than 25% of Oklahomans cope with mental health challenges – the fifth highest rate in the United States.

Depending on the diagnosis and severity, mental illness decreases the life expectancy of those affected by 10 to 24 years. Often, mental illness and addiction are interconnected challenges that manifest together.

“At Lighthouse we believe with proper treatment, those experiencing a mental illness and substance issues can lead full and rich lives,” Pfau said. “We empower and equip those who come to us, so that they can begin to thrive.”

Lighthouse is the Community Mental Health Center for nine counties in Southern Oklahoma, with headquarters in Ardmore and outpatient clinics in Ardmore, Ada, Durant, Madill, Pauls Valley, Seminole, Sulphur and Tishomingo and three, 24-hour crisis centers located in Ardmore, Ada and Durant.

Through a team-based approach for care and treatment, Lighthouse offers a comprehensive array of mental health and substance use disorder services to adult individuals, children and families.

“Every person who enters Lighthouse experiences our three core values: hope, dedication and community,” Pfau said. “We have a team of skilled clinicians who are dedicated to helping our clients with a proven program that helps rebuild hope.”

Because of the success with clients and increased visibility within its communities, Lighthouse has grown rapidly through the last three years, increasing from 120 employees to more than 300.

“We are performing life-changing work every day as we help our clients walk the road to recovery,” Pfau said.

It’s a journey that Oxley understands all too well. He’s walked it. He continues to walk it. And he’s the first to tell people, you can’t walk it alone.

“Part of being successful in life and successful at being sober is never giving up. You have to have some fight, but you need help,” he said. “You can’t do it by yourself. You need support like Lighthouse to beat the beast of addiction.”

The Chickasaw Nation and Ardmore have a long history of collaboration, and the tribe continues to be a dedicated community partner with the city, a dedication that has resulted in numerous beneficial projects and initiatives.

Bloomfield Academy, a Chickasaw girl’s school, relocated to Ardmore in 1917 and was renamed Carter Seminary in 1934. Today, the Chickasaw Nation’s educational programs, a longstanding priority for the tribe, continue to grow. Programs in the Ardmore area serve all ages, from Head Start to college scholarships and youth work programs.

The Chickasaw Nation Ardmore Health Clinic offers a host of services to First Americans in Carter County and surrounding areas. In addition to a dental clinic, laboratory and a pharmacy, the Ardmore clinic houses environmental health services, public health nursing, mental health services, WIC nutrition program, audiology screenings, pre-natal care and well-baby follow-ups after birth.

Access to services and facilities that promote a healthy lifestyle help make communities stronger. The Chickasaw Nation Wellness Center in Ardmore is open to Chickasaw citizens, employees and family members.

The Chickasaw Nation understands the importance of partnering with communities in progress and economic development. Currently, work continues on a new hotel and casino near Lake Murray. The property will contain a more than 70,000-square foot casino with approximately 1,000 gaming machines, table games and a restaurant. The property will also contain a hotel with a business center and conference rooms.

In 2021, Ardmore law enforcement signed a crossdeputation agreement with the Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse Police to enhance our combined public safety and law enforcement efforts.

With a focus on growth, progress and community, the Chickasaw Nation and Ardmore will continue to thrive.

RECREATION FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Within a short drive from the heart of the town, you can access fishing, boating, water sports, camping, hiking, swimming, zip lines, and picnicking.

Local sporting facilities include a community pool, trampoline park, golf courses, softball and baseball fields, disc golf courses, pickleball and tennis courts, and acres of trails for biking and walking or ATVs, motorcycles and dirt bikes. They contain a core of granite and gneiss that date back at least 1.4 billion years. The core is overlain by a 1,500 feet layer of Cambrian-era rhyolite that is about 525 million years old. Atop the rhyolite is a bout 15,000 feet of folded and faulted limestones, dolomites, sandstones, and shales deposited in shallow seas from Late Cambrian through Pennsylvanian time (515 - 290 million years ago).

Dedicated in 2001, Memorial Park is a monument acknowledging Ardmore’s rich history in the energy industry. Lake Murray Nature Center at Tucker Tower

The Lake Murray Nature Center at Tucker Tower is a must visit during any trip to Lake Murray. The Nature Center is located on the south end of Lake Murray on a cliff overlooking the lake. Opened in its current state in 2013, the Nature Center is connected by a short uphill path to Tucker Tower which overlooks the entire lake. The Nature Center houses a learning center that covers everything about Lake Murray and Lake Murray State Park.

From the lake’s history to local wildlife to the water itself, the Nature Center covers all topics around the lake. There are many displays and infographics to take in that explain the surrounding areas. A huge deck at the nature center overlooks the lake’s blue waters and is great for photographs. There is also a small dock that extends into a cove just below the Nature Center.

Nearby Tucker Tower serves as one of Oklahoma’s most visible landmarks. You can climb to the top of Tucker Tower for a 360-degree view of the lake and the surrounding areas. Do not miss the Lake Murray Nature Center - it is worth the short drive to the south end of the lake to visit. Enjoy!
