MORE FISHING Broken Bow is known around the country as a fishing mecca. The Glover River offers great opportunities to land smallmouth bass, Broken Bow Lake harbors largemouth of incredible sizes, and the Mountain Fork River routinely allows great catches of walleye, spotted bass and brown trout. Here’s a closer look at three amazing places to fish in Choctaw Country. GLOVER RIVER With a thriving, genetically pure population of Ouachitastrain smallmouth, you’re likely to pull out a few 1-to-3 pounders or even larger. Don’t be surprised if you land the occasional spotted or largemouth bass, as well. BROKEN BOW LAKE Cast your line into deeper waters at long points extending out into the river, and you’ve got a fairly strong chance of pulling out a largemouth bass upwards of 14 lbs. Broken Bow Lake also harbors both smallmouth and spotted bass to keep the anglers guessing. Don’t forget to take a moment after each cast to soak in the natural beauty of this gorgeous place.
MOUNTAIN FORK RIVER While the Upper Mountain Fork River is great for bringing in smallmouth, spotted and even largemouth bass, you just might hook into the occasional white bass or walleye. And if you cast-out near the Broken Bow dam, you could even be having fresh trout for dinner. Ranging from calm pools to deep areas and aggressive rapids, Mountain Fork River provides a wide variety of different fishing opportunities and species with every cast.

BIRDWATCHING If you’ve ever experienced the joy of spotting an unusual bird, photographing it, then later identifying it – you probably know the joy of birdwatching. In Choctaw Country, you’ll find over 7,800 acres of protected areas which are home to over 500 bird species, just waiting to be spotted. Here are three of our favorites in Choctaw Country. RED SLOUGH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA / IDABEL
HEAVENER RUNESTONE PARK / HEAVENER
With nearly 6,000 acres of wildlife area, Red Slough offers ample birdwatching real estate. Every year for the last decade, Red Slough has hosted the annual Red Slough Birding Convention – where attendees gather, tour local birdwatching hot spots and enjoy spotting some of the local birds who call this majestic place home.
The views in this park are beautiful, especially along the natural paths that guide birdwatchers toward the namesake runestone. Along these paths, visitors can see a variety of nature and wildlife. Interpretive signage along the way shares information with birdwatchers – pros and novices alike – to help them navigate to the best spots.
MCGEE CREEK / ATOKA Each year, McGee Creek attracts a variety of birds and birdwatchers alike to its more than 10,000-acre bird paradise. In the area and along the wooded trails, birdwatchers can spot and hear the calming Song Sparrow, the bright Yellow Warbler and many, many more.

TOP SWIMMING HOLES In this day and age, when we want to take a refreshing dip, we usually head to a swimming pool. But there’s nothing quite like diving into a “swimmin’ hole” like our ancestors have done for thousands of years. Open waters, relaxation and lots of fun await you in these beautiful areas, so put on your trunks and “take a dip.” MCGEE CREEK STATE PARK / ATOKA Get ready for a peaceful day of fun by the water. With lake huts right on the 64 miles of shoreline, you’ll be hard-pressed not to find the perfect spot. The lower part of the reservoir was cleared for the exclusive use of swimming, waterskiing, boating and fishing. If Dad would rather toss in a line than get wet, he can use one of the boat ramps, a fishing dock, or the pier to fish for bass, channel catfish, perch, crappie and sunfish. ROBBERS CAVE STATE PARK / WILBURTON How cool would it be knowing you’re about to swim through the same waters where fugitive Old West outlaws like Jesse James and Belle Starr likely swam? Have a splash where real-life bandits once did in Lake Carlton, Lake Wayne Wallace or Coon Creek. After the swim, clean up by taking a shower in one of our comfort stations, then start your cookout at one of our many picnic shelters and table areas. Play on the playgrounds, enjoy the miniature golf course or rent a paddleboat or surrey bike. HUGO LAKE STATE PARK / HUGO Just a stone’s throw away from small towns like Hugo, Idabel and Broken Bow, you’ll find a gorgeous campsite with coves located on both sides for swimming or fishing. Enjoy a relaxing float in the majestic waters of Hugo Lake or kick the excitement up a notch by using one of the 56 slips to launch your personal boat. Don’t have one? We’ve got you covered with 24-foot pontoons and more available to rent.
BEAVERS BEND STATE PARK / BROKEN BOW Summertime is the perfect time for family water fun at Beavers Bend State Park. Broken Bow Lake has over 180 miles of shoreline that is fed by many rivers and surrounding natural streams and ponds throughout the park. There are a number of designated swim beaches scattered along the shores with wonderful picnic areas, tent camping accommodations, fishing docks and boat slips that are sure to provide hours of family fun. So be sure to soak in of all the natural beauty that surrounds you as your crew takes a dip in the cool, clear waters of Broken Bow Lake. SARDIS LAKE / CLAYTON Nestled near both Clayton Lake State Park and Tuskahoma – the capital city of the Choctaw Nation – lies a beautiful, hidden lake largely undisturbed by heavy populations, congestion and traffic. If you’re looking for a great quick getaway – my friends, you’ve found it. With several boat ramps and swim beaches, you’re sure to find a great place on, off, or IN the water. And for fishermen, look no further. Sardis Lake is enormous, covering 14,360 acres, including 117 miles of shoreline – recognized for producing some of the largest bass catches on record!

Step back in time for an afternoon. 32
GET TAKEN BACK BY OUR MUSEUMS Sadly, the “time machine” has yet to be invented (at least to our knowledge, anyway). In the meantime, the next best thing is to “step back in time” with a visit to our museums. We’re proud to say Choctaw Country is home to many museums, each of which tell their own different, unique stories of the past. You can find these museums, as well as others, while planning your trip at ChoctawCountry.com. MUSEUM OF THE RED RIVER / IDABEL How much admission would you pay to see a life-sized, 40-foot-long skeletal representation of Acrocanthosaurus atokensis – one of the fiercest meat-eating dinosaurs ever to walk the earth? Couple that with an archaeological Study Area which showcases numerous authentic Caddo ceramics ranging as far back as the Mississippian phase (A.D. 700 – 1500) all the way up to modern-day examples of native artwork – how much would you pay to see all that? Put away your wallets, as admission to the Museum of the Red River is always free. HUGO FRISCO DEPOT MUSEUM / HUGO An actual railroad depot built in 1914 which serviced the area for fifty years, The Hugo Frisco Depot is now an entertaining and impressive railroad museum. Here, you can enjoy a miniature circus, study the intricacies of their model railroad, explore a Southwestern Bell switching center and lots more. Dine in the depot’s converted baggage rooms in the renovated Harvey House Restaurant. It’s a fun, interesting and unique experience that will leave lasting memories. WILDLIFE HERITAGE CENTER / ANTLERS For those with a passion for wildlife, the 3,100 square foot Wildlife Heritage Center Museum is the place for you. Located between two
existing Whitetail and Fallow deer exhibits just across from “Little Peoples Park,” you’ll find a multitude of exhibits and artifacts on display with friendly, helpful and highly educated volunteers eager to answer all of your questions. Pet and feed the local whitetail deer and bring a picnic lunch to enjoy for yourself while the kids take advantage of the great playgrounds. FORT TOWSON HISTORIC SITE AND MUSEUM / FORT TOWSON Established in 1824 to guard the southern boundary of the United States, Fort Towson also served as an access point for Texas-bound travelers including Sam Houston, Davy Crockett and Stephen F. Austin. The fort served as a dispersal point for Choctaw and Chickasaw natives who survived the dreaded “Trail of Tears.” Here, visitors can see what remains of the historic buildings and experience the stateof-the-art exhibits which take adults and kids alike through the site’s incredible history. LEFLORE COUNTY MUSEUM | POTEAU Once a luxury hotel of the 1930’s, the museum now is the home of historical artifacts, photographs and numerous other interesting and intriguing exhibits, each displaying the unique story of LeFlore County and its residents over the years. It’s a museum visit you won’t soon forget.
