HALITO!

[Hello]

It is with great pride that I welcome you to Choctaw Country!

During the spring and summer months, there’s no shortage of things to do: fishing, swimming, boating, waterskiing, off-roading, you name it. You can come for the thrill of a lifetime with activities filled with excitement – or simply set up camp somewhere, do some fishing, and enjoy a gorgeous hike at your own pace. Yes, spring and summer are a great time to visit.

Then, when the air starts to cool down and the leaves begin to change, I find myself getting excited. In Choctaw Country, there are so many wonderful things to look forward to during the fall and winter seasons! Take a brisk (or long) hike through the stunning fall foliage, find some of the greatest hunting and fishing spots for miles around, or treat yourself during perfect camping temperatures to a spectacular view of the stars.

Whether you are looking for a peaceful retreat or a weekend adventure, our community members are here to welcome you with open arms and true southern hospitality.

At every turn, you will find history, nature, excitement and, most importantly, culture. So come experience the Choctaw Nation and see for yourselves!

[Be seeing you]

Take time to look around

Iced or hot, almond milk or half and half, an extra shot of espresso, two pumps of caramel or just plain black—there’s no wrong way to drink a cup of coffee. But coffee shops are more than a place to grab your morning fix. There are overstuffed couches where friends pass hours catching up while the heavy incense of coffee grounds fills the air. Coffee shops are all about the vibe.

Whatever vibe you’re searching for or flavor you’re craving, the coffee shops in Choctaw Country will keep you coming back for more.

Succulent barbecue sauced with generations of secret spices. Comforting pies wrapped in flaky crusts of love and tenderness. The perfect chicken fried steak, just like Grandma used to make. There’s no denying we all have an emotional connection to food. The heavy scents of supper cooking can transport us to another time, satisfying our appetite for nostalgia and belonging.

Throw straight and let it fly

Welcome to the next generation of golf! As you step up to the tee pad, every variable sweeps its way through your mind—the wind, the distance, the angle. Then, adrenaline takes over as you slam the driver through the air, your breath catching as you listen hopefully for the tiny rattle of chains.

Di sc Golf

Disc golf is just like traditional golf—the rules, the etiquette, the camaraderie—they’re all the same. But then again, it’s not. It’s a swiftly growing subculture of people who live for the moment each disc takes flight and who share the ups and downs of the game with one another. Thankfully, you don’t have to sling your frisbee very far to find a great disc golf course in Choctaw Country.

You may be able to fool people, but you can’t fool a horse. They immediately know if you’re tense or relaxed, if you’re upset about the fight you had with a friend or if you’re ecstatic it’s finally the weekend, if you’re a seasoned rider or an inexperienced passenger. Horses have a way of teaching us about ourselves, reflecting our vulnerabilities and insecurities yet accepting us all the same.

For those who are fortunate enough to be known and understood by a horse, to share that special relationship of trust with one of God’s most majestic creatures, nothing can top the therapeutic feeling of watching the landscape glide by from atop your mount. If you travel to Choctaw Country, you’ll find some of the most breathtakingly scenic destinations to connect with your equine friend.

beautiful drive to clear your mind

Choctaw Country is one of the most sought-after places in the area to view autumn foliage in all her majesty. Along the way, you’ll find charming historic towns with welcoming cafés and one-of-akind shops.

Discover peace away from home

Those who camp know everything has a purpose. Leaves, fallen to the ground in tones of amber, are given new life as kindling. A slender twig foraged from among the undergrowth becomes the perfect roasting utensil. The branches overhead become our refuge, and a level stretch of earth, becomes the perfect bed.

Lo dging

Whether you’re in a tent, RV or cabin, when we strip away everything else, we connect with the ancient wisdom of our ancestors — a wisdom that tells us gratitude is found in making do with less. Comfort is found in snuggling against the cold. Accomplishment is found in struggle, and joy is found in sharing these experiences with the ones we love.

CAMPSITES

In Choctaw Country, a great view is as simple as unzipping your tent. Find the perfect spot at one of our many state parks or designated camping areas, then just pitch your tent and start getting back in-tune with nature.

CABINS

For those who love celebrating the great outdoors… indoors, cabins are always a great option. You can keep it rustic with cabins offering limited amenities, or you can go all-out in “glamping” style luxury. With cabins scattered across Southeastern Oklahoma, you’re sure to find the one that feels like home-away-from-home.

HOTELS, INNS, B&BS

Perhaps a full-service stay is more along your tastes. No worries – once again, Choctaw Country has you covered. From reliable chain hotels to quaint inns and B&Bs, they’ll make sure you have all the comforts of home and more.

RV PARKS

Ready for an adventure? Hook up your RV and head out! With RV parks spread throughout Choctaw Country, you’ll have a place to stay no matter where the road may take you. Find your spot and make some RV friends!

UNIQUE STAYS

For all its regular places to stay, Choctaw Country isn’t without its quirks. Want to stay somewhere a little different? Friends, you’re headed to the right place! Where else can you sleep overnight in a houseboat or a train car – or even a 1950’s-style hotel? Hey, whatever floats your boat!

CHOCTAW LANDING

Discover a new kind of adventure in the lush forest surrounding Hochatown, Oklahoma. Choctaw Landing brings the comforts of an exclusive casino resort experience to the gateway of the Oklahoma wilderness.

Plan your adventure and your stay with us now at ChoctawCountry.com

Hi king ail s

Stocking your pack with the necessary supplies. Shaking your boots free of the dusty remnants of your last adventure. The hunt for the trailhead. Your first true breath of freedom as you step foot onto the trail. The forest enveloping you in a protective shroud, closing off the outside world.

For a hiker, nothing is so satisfying as the return to the wilderness. To seek out paths less traveled and lose yourself on the slopes of some wild hillside. If you long to forever wander, the trails of Choctaw Country will guide you home.

Since the dawn of our existence as a species, we’ve gazed to the heavens wondering about our place in the vast tapestry of our universe. We’ve drawn pictures between familiar points and reverently given them names of meaning, as we would name our own children. We’ve planned our lives by the movement of the night skies, coordinating structures to sing in tune with the celestial bodies hovering over our lives. Even today, we search for meaning in the night sky. We see eternity in every fiery ball above us, yet we still can’t fathom the concept.

If you’ve never experienced a humbling encounter with the limitless black sky, free of light pollution and heavy with its seeming nearness, visiting these locations in Choctaw Country is a must. Most of our parks fall between 2-3 on the Bortle scale—a system that ranks the darkness of an area of sky from 1-9, darkest to lightest. This means you’ll have plenty of opportunities for breathtaking views, stellar photography and even more quiet contemplation and wonder.

e Legend o f

Bigfoot. Sasquatch. Yeti. Skunk Ape. These are just a handful of the multitude of names for the elusive creature who haunts the untamed corners of our world. He is sometimes described as apelike and massive, or even fuzzy around the edges, as if slightly out of focus. To some, he’s not of this world and to others, he’s one of the “Old Ones.” A harbinger of danger, a multidimensional traveler, a symbol of freedom from cultural obligations and norms, inhuman, shapeshifter, monster and friend.

While the existence of Sasquatch hasn’t been proven with any amount of unanimous certainty, it hasn’t been disproven either. And for those who claim to have experienced their own encounters with the creature of legend, no amount of skepticism can waver their conviction in his presence.

Whether you’re a true believer or just Squatch-curious, there’s no denying the mystery of the remote foothills of the Kiamichi Mountains, full of misty apparitions, boggy moans and who-knows-what in the distance. It’s a regular stop for renowned Bigfoot researchers, authors, TV and radio personalities, and podcast hosts. Home to the annual Honobia Bigfoot Festival and Conference, the wilderness of Southeastern Oklahoma is familiarly recognized as Squatch Country.

If you’re brave or curious enough to venture into the forests of Choctaw Country, you’ll find one thing is certain: you’re not alone out there.

Learn something new from something old

If you’re a hunter, you know the sport is about more than just trophy kills and bragging rights. It’s a return to the primitive kernel of humanity we all carry at our core. An education of the old ways of respectfully harvesting our resources.

It’s being able to easily identify the surrounding vegetation and knowing an animal by the scat it leaves, the prints that mark its passage or its call from beyond the trees. It’s knowing if the world around us were to crumble away, you could still provide for your family with your own two hands. Finally, it’s a sacred camaraderie with others who share this way of life.

The wildlands of Choctaw Country lie waiting for your careful step, your patient observation and your triumphant harvest.
