It is with great pride that I welcome you to Choctaw Country!
During the spring and summer months, there’s no shortness of things to do: fishing, swimming, boating, waterskiing, offroading, you name it. You can come for the thrill-of-a-lifetime with activities filled with excitement – or simply set-up camp somewhere, do some fishing, and enjoy a gorgeous hike at your own pace. Yes, spring and summer are a great time to visit.
Then, when the air starts to cool down and the leaves begin to change, I find myself getting excited. In Choctaw Country, there are so many wonderful things to look forward to during the fall and winter seasons! Take a brisk (or long) hike through the stunning fall foliage, find some of the greatest hunting and fishing spots for miles around, or treat yourself during perfect camping temperatures to a spectacular view of the stars.
Whether you are looking for a peaceful retreat or a weekend adventure, our community members are here to welcome you with open arms and true southern hospitality.
At every turn, you will find history, nature, excitement and, most importantly, culture. So come experience the Choctaw Nation and see for yourselves!

BREWERIES, DISTILLERIES & WINERIES
There are so many ways to experience the bliss of your favorite drink. For some, it’s a flight of craft brews in varying shades of amber and russet, the lacing on the glass as you tilt it to your lips. For others, it’s uncorking a new vintage and exploring the balance of sharp acidity, bright florals and fruity undertones over an intimate conversation with a friend. Still, others live for the warmth of a good whiskey and the smoky-sweet flavors that accompany every smooth sip.
Whatever your preference, Choctaw Country offers an abundance of spirits to explore in places designed for making lasting memories.

Whether in a tent, RV or cabin, when you retreat from civilization, you give yourself the space to live in the moment and appreciate the beauty constantly taken for granted. Gathered in a circle around the hypnotizing dance of fire, the conversations become more intimate as stories are told and laughter is shared. The stars seem to have multiplied and hang heavy in the night like pale sentinels over the wilderness.

Nature exists outside the boundaries
HIKING TRAILS
From your first footstep onto the trail, the finest details of life become magnified as crucially important: The shiver of wings from the treetops as the birds mark your presence. The smell of damp earth. The soft crunch of dead leaves underfoot, like scattered paper bones. The feathered edges of moss catching the most vibrant green in the sunlight, blazing like tiny emerald flames against the tree bark. These are the stories of life we eternally carry, cherished as escapes later sought behind closed eyelids amidst the crowd.
If you share that familiar ache to set your boots upon paths unknown, these trails will lead your wandering heart home.

FOLIAGE SIGHTSEEING
“I hope I can be the autumn leaf, who looked at the sky and lived. And when it was time to leave, gracefully it knew life was a gift.”
– Dodinsky
Autumn is undeniably one of the most celebrated seasons, and it’s no mystery as to why. The cooling temperatures beckon us outdoors, and our lungs fill with the crisp breath of a new season that washes away the stale tang of summer.
Many are under the misconception you have to travel to the northern part of the country for stunning autumnal views, but they’re much closer than you think—right here in Southeastern Oklahoma. These places are a must if you’re searching for ‘gram-worthy photo ops and back-roads vibes.

STARGAZING
Countless galaxies and endless pinpoints of light lay cradled in the inkiness of our wild skies. They reach out to us from millions of light years away, waving from the past as if to say, “I was here. I exist.”
Perhaps that’s what we find so entrancing about the limitless nighttime sky. We see a reflection of our own desire to make our mark on an incomprehensibly vast universe. To leave a lasting impression that burns for eternity.
Breathtaking opportunities for stargazing are seemingly just as boundless in Choctaw Country.
Your best bet for capturing awe-inspiring constellations lies in the area between Noshoba and Smithville, or in the seclusion of one of our peaceful state parks, like McGee Creek, Robbers Cave or Beavers Bend.

FISHING
Choctaw Country is known as a fishing mecca. The Glover River offers great opportunities to land smallmouth bass. At Lake Carlton, you’ve got a good chance at landing some muskie, saugeye and red-ear sunfish. Broken Bow Lake harbors largemouth of incredible sizes. Mountain Fork River routinely allows great catches of walleye, spotted bass and brown trout. Here’s a closer look at some amazing places to fish in Choctaw Country.

THE LEGEND OF BIGFOOT
You’re alone in the woods, and the unexpected snapping of a nearby twig catches your attention.
As you turn to look, you’re confronted with the outline of a hairy creature... too tall to be human, yet with the familiar stance of a man.
Before you’re able to make any sort of distinction, it’s gone—vanished into the night.
From the casually curious to avid enthusiasts with an unshakeable faith, the legend of Bigfoot has captivated generations of people for at least 400 years. Whether you’re canvasing the woods for prints or attending a local festival in honor of this elusive creature, it’s no wonder that the untamed woods of Choctaw Country are known as ‘Squatch Country.
Is there actually a
creature—somewhere between man and beast—lurking
in the woods of Southeastern Oklahoma?
The truth is out there. Waiting to be found.
