Gave us the grand tour ( 36.6007° N

We love our kids dearly … but taking a grownups’ getaway was great. Seeing everyone in their element, reconnecting with old hobbies, is a rare treat. The spark’s still there — it just ends up on the back burner so often. Fishing at Twin Bridges from dawn to dusk. Taking long walks around the lake. Tearing up the Disney Off-Road Area. Watching the sunset at our Honey Creek campsite. You know that special sort of exhaustion that sets in after a day spent doing things you love? I’ll chase it every chance I get at Grand Lake.

Route 66 & I-44 Oklahoma has more of Route 66 than any state, and there are still plenty of great things to see. From the Coleman Theatre in Miami, to historic Afton, to the second oldest Oklahoma town, Vinita, there are lots of things to see on Route 66. Just outside of Miami is the last

section of the original nine-foot wide “Ribbon Road” that is listed as an Oklahoma National Historic Landmark. Although a part of the Historic Highway, this section predates Route 66, having been built in the early 1920s. Legend has it that when the road was built, Oklahoma’s budget was tight, so rather than covering half the mileage, they covered half the width. This remarkable piece of vintage pavement zigzags for 13 miles between Miami and Afton. Another small section of the original road also lies farther south in Narcissa. And if you’re lucky, you might catch a classic car or motorcycle cruising the Mother

I-44 is the Interstate that takes travelers all around the country with a little quicker pace. But don’t let the speed fool you — you can exit at several locations and see the great sites all around Grand Lake.

2020 GRAND LAKE VISITOR GUIDE FOR THE GRAND LAKE REGION

Open Saturdays 10am-4pm

Some of the best bass and crappie fishing in the world is found right here on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees. We also take pride in having some of the nation’s top anglers and guides call Grand Lake home. WHITE BASS This sporty little fish rarely gets above three pounds, but a two-pounder will test your tackle. During their spawning period in late February or early March, a good place to catch them is the upper end of Elk River, Spring River, and Neosho River above Twin Bridges. After spawning, White Bass move to deep flats and underwater islands. This can be the time to fish for whites. Schools can be found in 5’ to 20’ water. Use gigging spoons straight up and down. By the middle of August when the shad have reached the size of minnows, the White Bass move to the shallows. They’re easy to catch trolling or casting on windy points and gravel shorelines. They can be taken with white or light blue jigs, with or without a float, light-colored Roadrunners, white or yellow Rooster Tails, and, on occasion, top water lures. This action generally lasts until the first of December, at this time the White Bass go back to the upper end storing for the spawn. WHITE CRAPPIE Some of the larger Crappie are caught in the winter months from fishing docks with the brush around them and in deep sunken brush. Most public brush piles are marked on the shoreline. Crappie spawn in 55-60 degree F. shallow water (about April). A small, light colored jig fished 18 inches under a float works well. During hot summer months and cold winter months, Crappie can be found in deep brush, outside or inside fishing docks in 15-25 feet of water. Live minnow work well during all those conditions. Grand is nationally known for winter crappie fishing. SPOTTED BASS This fish is locally referred to as a Kentucky bass. This bass follows about the same water temperature changes as the largemouth, although he likes rocky ledges and is generally caught in deeper water than the largemouth. This fish can be distinguished by a rough spot on the tongue, and his mouth does not extend

past his eye. Best lures are jig and pork, salt craws, plastic worms, deep jerk baits and spring lizards. BLUEGILL They are well represented in Grand Lake and average four to seven ounces. They are caught during summer months around boat docks and along rocky shorelines. Most are caught on baits such as earthworms, grub worms, insect larva, crickets, and grasshoppers. Small flies or cork-body popping bugs work well on a fly rod. CHANNEL CATFISH Catfish can be caught through December in many ways: trotlines, throw lines, limb lines, and jug lines or rod and reel. Good baits are beef liver, chicken liver, blood bait, stink bait, live minnows, live crawfish, crappie entrails and shad. Drift flats in five-fifteen feet of water most anytime of the day or night. Channel spawn when water temperature reaches 75°F (late May or early June). During spawn, Channel can be caught around rock fills, breakwater fills and bridge fills. BLACK BASS January, February and March can be great months to bass fish on Grand. Stink baits and jigs work well. In April, May and June, the bass will spawn and then move to the willow tree points and boats docks. July, August and into September can still be good on Grand as the bass stay shallower than most lakes. October, November and December are the favorite months to fish for many of the local bass fisherman. FLATHEADS Flatheads can be caught in spring and summer, but the best action will occur in Fall (September, October and November.) These freshwater giants feed mainly around structure, old sunken timber or rocky, river channel edges. Live bait is a must (shad, perch, goldfish.) All work well when fished with a rod and reel, jugline or trotline. BLUE CATFISH Blue Catfish can be caught year-round with the best rod and reel fishing being in the Fall and Winter. Bluecats feed heavily in the winter months due to the natural shad kill that takes place when the water temperatures drop below 42°F. 25’ to 45’ flats or the edges of river channels are hot spots. Limits of bluecats are also caught on jug-lines or trotlines in Spring or Summer in 20’ to 30’ of water with live or cut bait.

SPOONBILL These prehistoric fish are one of Grand Lake’s main attractions for fishermen. Fish in the 35-pound to 75-pound class are very common. The best time to catch spoonbill is during the spring spawning run, snagging them in the old river channels. When snagging spoonbill, heavy gear is a must:─30-50 pound line, heavy action rods and large capacity reels are a necessity. Spoonbill do not feed on lures or bait, they are a filter feeder feeding on tiny organisms called plankton.

Pensacola Dam

Oklahoma’s First Hydro-Electric Facility When its construction was completed in 1940, Pensacola Dam began its mission to produce renewable hydroelectricity, provide flood control and hold back the waters that create majestic Grand Lake. We invite you to come see firsthand how this important and historic structure still meets the same mission that spurred its creation all those years ago.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
