An important attraction running directly through the heart of Miami is Historic Route 66. With a deep history as America’s most beloved highway, Route 66 has played a large part in the history of Oklahoma and Ottawa County. Often referred to as the “Birthplace of Route 66” Oklahoma was part of the road’s beginning and is blessed to have more miles of this historic 2,400 mile roadway than any other state. Miami is home to the longest Main Street on all of Route 66 and is proud to have the Gateway Sign on South Main Street welcoming all those traveling the Mother Road. Just outside of Miami is the last section of the original nine foot wide “Ribbon Road.” Visit the original 9’ section south of Miami at the junction of E. 140th Road and S. 550 Road. It is listed as an Oklahoma National Historic Landmark.

at the Coleman Theatre

Located on Route 66, the Coleman Theatre Beautiful is a beacon for tourists from around the world. Programming ranges from ballets and operas to country and western acts to jazz and dance bands. Visitors from around the world flock to the historic vaudeville theatre to experience the Spanish Colonial Mission-style exterior and the Louis XV interior. They marvel at the use of gargoyles, dolphins, cherubs and faces throughout the facility. The theatre still holds its original pipe organ, the “Mighty Wurlitzer” which provides music and sound effects for the silent movies. The Coleman Theatre Beautiful guest book reads like a geography text book with the number of different countries represented. And, all of those visitors have done their homework. How do we know that? Because they all want to hear the organ. The organ was built in 1928 and delivered for installation on Feb. 21, 1929. It sold for $35,000 in 1929 and is one of only a handful of Wurlitzer organs still in its original home. The theatre, built by George L. Coleman Sr., was built in less than a year at a cost of $600,000. The Coleman Theatre opened on April 18, 1929, to a full house of 1,600, each paying $1.00 per ticket. Although the theatre has transformed from a vaudeville theatre to a movie house over the years, it has never been “dark.” Among the many stars who have performed on the Coleman Theatre stage are Will Rogers, Tom Mix, Sally Rand, Jim Thorpe, the magician Harry Blackstone and Moscelyne Larkin. COLEMAN THEATRE

Route 66 Adventure Waylon’s Ku-Ku Burger, Ribbon Road and Mickey Mantle’s statue are all in Miami on “The Mother Road.” Visitors from around the world still enjoy the freedom of the open road to discover the people and places that give travelers their “Kicks on Route 66!”

Historical Tour Miami is rich in history and culture. The Dobson Museum is home to thousands of artifacts that highlight mining, military, Native American culture, famous residents, and local industry. The G.A.R. Cemetery is the final resting place for 15 British Cadets who lost their lives here training for WWII. The Coleman Theatre, built in 1929 by mining magnate, George Coleman, is a must-see for any history buff.
