Many of these attractions host special events and activities throughout the year, so before you go, check out VisitOKC.com for event details, hours of operation, coupons and more.
BRICKTOWN WATER TAXI
As a popular Bricktown attraction for more than 25 years, the Water Taxi takes visitors down the Bricktown Canal at a leisurely pace, while the guide narrates the history of the canal, the entertainment district and OKC’s renaissance. Along the ride, visitors pass a variety of murals and public art, including one of the largest bronze sculptures in the world, the Oklahoma Centennial Land Run Monument. Created by Native artist and multiple award winner Paul Moore, the monument is 45 figures depicting participants in the 1889 opening of the Unassigned Lands. Rather than create static poses, Moore imbued his sculptures with energy and emotion.
FACTORY OBSCURA
Part art gallery, part immersive experience, Factory Obscura is a local arts collaborative company focused on awakening wonder. The first permanent experience is Mix-Tape, a multisensory homage to and modern application of old school mixtapes – those old cassettes that were thematic collections of favorite songs. The creators describe it as a mixture of visuals, sounds, textures and interactivity.
FIRST AMERICANS MUSEUM
The First Americans Museum shares the diverse cultures, history, art, resiliency and dynamic contributions of First Americans. Visitors can experience the collective histories of Oklahoma’s 39 distinctive First American Nations through immersive family friendly activities, a museum store highlighting authentic handmade items by premiere First American artists and an outdoor cultural park where the plains, prairies and wetlands converge.
OKLAHOMA CITY MUSEUM OF ART
The Museum of Art showcases traveling and special exhibits while also housing an impressive permanent collection. Among the highlights is a piece by Kehinde Wiley, former President Barack Obama’s portraitist. As soon as you step into the foyer, you’re greeted by a stunning 55-foot-high Dale Chihuly tower, setting the tone for the artistic treasures that await. The museum also offers a carefully curated Museum Store that’s not to be missed.
OKLAHOMA CITY NATIONAL MEMORIAL & MUSEUM
Thirty years ago, a man who hated our government drove a truck to the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown OKC and exploded a 4,800 lb bomb, killing 168 and injuring hundreds more. Now, anti-government rhetoric is at an all-time high, while respectful discourse feels like a thing of the past. The OKC National Memorial & Museum provides all generations with tools and resources for Better Conversations, in addition to sharing stories of the resolve, hope and community spirit that grew after the Murrah Bombing. Built as a tribute to “those who were killed, those who survived, and those who were changed forever,” the Outdoor Symbolic Memorial is designed to be seen by day and by night – they truly are different experiences. The grounds also house the Memorial Museum, which educates the public about the tragedy, its impact and the resiliency of Oklahoma City.
OKLAHOMA CITY ZOO
OKC’s innovative approach to zoo design continues to improve the lives of zoo animals and the experience of guests. The newest installment is Expedition Africa, which features a new, state-of-the-art giraffe viewing area and vista spaces for common elands, flamingos, gazelles, honey badgers, meerkats, mongooses, naked mole rats, okapis, ostriches, wildebeests and zebras.
WHEELER FERRIS WHEEL
Believe it or not, the historic Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel now sits on the banks of the Oklahoma River in the Wheeler District. Overlooking the downtown skyline, the Wheeler Ferris Wheel stands 100 feet tall and offers some of the best views in the city.

History Buff’s Guide to OKC
Oklahoma City’s history is complex and filled with stories of grit, resilience and an underdog spirit. Those character qualities, combined with civic visionaries and a cultural melting pot, have nurtured a wide range of interesting history lessons and experiences for visitors to enjoy. Here are just a handful of Oklahoma City’s many historic sites.
The Oklahoma History Center 215,000-square-foot learning center exploring Oklahoma’s unique history of Native culture, pioneers, aviation, civil rights leaders, commerce and more. The Oklahoma History Center is a Smithsonian Affiliate and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The Oklahoma Historical Society manages the center with the mission to collect, preserve and share the history and culture of the state of Oklahoma and its people.
The Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine opened in 2023, and the 6,000-foot edifice contains a museum and gift shop highlighting the story of Blessed Stanley Rother’s life and mission. It features artifacts from every stage of his life and provides information about his martyrdom and beatification. The shrine church is designed in the Spanish-colonial style, mirroring Blessed Stanley’s church in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala: Saint James the Apostle Catholic Church.
Oklahoma National Guard Museum, formerly known as the 45th Infantry Division Museum, is a cherished institution of remembrance and education, celebrating the illustrious history of the Oklahoma National Guard, a living testament, honoring the sacrifices and achievements of the brave men and women in uniform.
Heritage Hills and Mesta Park are two of OKC’s earliest neighborhoods, located adjacent to one another. With historic mansions like the Henry and Anna Overholser Mansion, these wide, leafy streets are a great place to stroll and admire.
The Harn Homestead is an Oklahoma treasure that reflects the territorial history of Oklahoma City. It was established by William and Alice Harn in 1897. Today, the Harn Homestead is a living museum, with historic buildings, self-guided walking tours, limited hands-on activities in the Farmhouse building and a small gift shop.
The Anchor from the USS Oklahoma, attacked at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, was recovered from the wreckage and is now permanently on display at Campbell Park on a small patch of land at 13th Street and N. Broadway Avenue.
The Oklahoma State Capitol is available for walkup tours on weekdays at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at no cost. Tours are run by the Oklahoma Arts Council which maintains the Capitol Art Collection, more than 100 permanent sculptures, murals and paintings located throughout the Capitol’s hallways, rotunda and grounds. As you finish exploring the Oklahoma State Capitol, consider continuing your journey along historic Route 66.
At its zenith, U.S. Highway 66, AKA Route 66, AKA the ‘Mother Road,’ was a bustling, 2,400mile highway stretching across two-thirds of the country, from the banks of Lake Michigan to the sunny Los Angeles shore of the Pacific Ocean. Here in Oklahoma City, it spans 51.5 miles and back in the day was also known as the Will Rogers Highway. It traverses five commercial districts and is dotted with about 200 signs, making it an easy drive to follow.
The historic Tower Theatre opened in 1937 and is one of Oklahoma City’s last original movie houses with an intact auditorium and iconic neon marquee. After many years of movie premieres and historic runs of classic films, the Tower Theatre closed in 1989. In 2017, Tower Theatre returned as a live music, movie and event venue in the heart of OKC’s Uptown 23rd district.
Built in 1924, the Lake Overholser Bridge boasted a unique design for the time, using the latest steel truss technology and combining a variety of trusses in unusual ways. The Overholser Bridge lost its official association with Route 66 in 1958 when a new highway section and wider bridge was built to the north, but its size and symmetry and long-time service as part of old Route 66 solidified it as a Mother Road landmark. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
The Milk Bottle Grocery Building, at 2426 N. Classen Blvd. in Oklahoma City’s Asian District, is a Route 66 landmark. The little triangular building was constructed in the 1930s. You can’t miss the giant milk bottle on top, which was added in 1948. In 1998 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. For up-to-date information on Route 66 as it gears up for its centennial in 2026, head to VisitOKC.com/things-to-do/route-66/ for the latest events, attractions and hidden gems along Oklahoma City’s stretch of the Mother Road.

MATT
@MATTKIROUACYORK
A perfect day in OKC, for me, starts with a leisurely breakfast at 30th Street Market, sipping locally roasted coffee on the dog-friendly patio with one of their irresistible house-made granola bars (or one of their pastry specials, like a piña colada bar). From there, I’d go for a sunny walk along the Bricktown Canal, before finding a shaded spot in Myriad Gardens to read a book (likely from Commonplace Books or Full Circle). For lunch, I’d pop into Empire Slice House for one of their slices of the day, then shop for vintage swag at Bad Granny’s Bazaar or Magoo’s Attic. Later, my favorite spot for date night is sitting at the bar — and sharing a flatbread — with my husband at Stella. And if we timed it right, we’d catch sunset (and live

Our day in OKC begins with a delicious breakfast at Scrambl’d, where you can enjoy a Luther Burger, which is a cheeseburger on donuts, or fluffy pancakes with an espresso martini. After fueling up, we’d head to Ski OKC at RIVERSPORT for a unique indoor skiing adventure—I never thought I would go skiing in OKC of all places! For lunch, spice things up at Naija Wife Kitchen inside a small food hall. They are serving big flavors like jollof rice, pepper soup and suya that transport your taste buds straight to Nigeria. Post-lunch, we’d stroll through the beautifully blooming Myriad Botanical Gardens. As evening approaches, we would catch a stunning sunset from the Wheeler Ferris Wheel and enjoy the breathtaking city views. Finally, we’d wrap up our day with a romantic dinner at Grey Sweater, where you can delight in a tiered tasting menu paired with exquisite wines or craft cocktails.

@BLACKADVENTURECREW
Start your day with a flavorful, Latin-inspired breakfast at Café Kacao. The Mexican cold brew and Omelet Ranchero are an unbeatable combination for me, while my kids and husband loved the signature pancakes and french toast. Once fueled up for the day, we’d head to Scissortail Park to work off our meals. With so many opportunities for climbing, running, splashing and relaxing by the river and gardens, this park captures the interests of our whole family. Afterwards, an immersive Oklahoma culture and history lesson at the First Americans Museum is a perfect educational and fun family friendly outing. From there, head to Lake Hefner for a picnic dinner and family photos by the lighthouse. We’d end the day with a sweet treat from Tizo’s Pops & Ice Cream.

From the Boathouse District, the trails lead north to Lake Overholser Boathouse, where you can enjoy a climbing wall, paddleboard and kayak rentals and access to Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge. Oklahoma City’s 100-mile trail network connects nearly every part of the city, ideal for serious bikers and runners. You can find an interactive map at okc.gov to plan your route.
If you prefer skateboarding or BMX, the Oklahoma City metro features three skate parks, including Mat Hoffman Action Sports Park, complete with an 11-foot half pipe, a 10-foot over-vert pocket, a street course and bowl course. If you’re looking for an outdoor adventure immersed in nature, Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge on the west side of OKC is adjacent to Lake Overholser and features a thousand acres of hiking, fishing, bird watching and exploring. Whitetail deer, beaver, egrets, cormorants and hundreds of species of migratory birds and waterfowl move through Stinchcomb regularly. Martin Nature Park, which is located in north OKC, is 140 acres of lush grasslands, rocky streams and rich foliage. Martin Nature Park is known for its trails, birdwatching and educational programs. Finally, Bluff Creek Park is north of Lake Hefner and offers picnic pavilions and lots of green space to explore.
Lake Hefner also has trails for biking, running, in-line skating or a casual walk to enjoy a beautiful Oklahoma sunset. While you’re there, stop by and take a photo at the picturesque lighthouse on the east side of the lake (make sure to use #SeeOKC for all your awesome Instagram pictures). The gorgeous water feature offers sailing and kitesurfing and is home to one of the state’s largest public golf courses.
Speaking of golf, Oklahoma City is a haven for any golf lover. The Modern Frontier boasts five public golf courses with varying degrees of difficulty. They are distributed throughout the city, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a good place to tee off. Lincoln Park has two courses that will challenge you, and Trosper Golf Club is described as the fastest playing course in OKC. If you’ve already played a full round on the aforementioned courses, be sure to give the James E. Stewart Golf Course or the Earlywine Golf Course a try.

Five to Try
Oklahoma City is teeming with food traditions. From old-school classics that have endured since the Land Run, to newfangled innovations and immigrant cuisines, there are so many dishes that have come to symbolize the increasing diversity of the city and its ever-growing restaurant scene. Here are five dishes to try in OKC, as well as the best places to try them.
PIZZA
An all-American comfort food, good pizza can be found in practically every corner of the country. But here in OKC, great pizza is just as commonplace, exemplified by the sheer array of pizza styles, toppings and traditions.
Empire Slice House: This Plaza District pieoneer made an enduring name for itself with its punk-rock aesthetic and punk-rock pizzas, wherein New York-style slices come clad with atypical toppings like almond-basil pesto, buffalo chicken nuggets and barbecue chips.
Stella Modern Italian: Inspired by her time abroad in Rome, owner Lori Burson brought a heartfelt slice of Italy to Midtown — and slices of wood-fired pizza, served on crackery crust and topped with seasonal, chef-driven ingredients like prosciutto and peach, or chicken meatballs with hot cherry peppers and fresh basil.
Rendezvous Pizza: It’s the best of both pizza worlds at Bricktown’s Rendezvous Pizza, where both Detroit- and New York-style pies share the saucy spotlight. Try the Red Top Original Pepperoni, a thicker, almost deep-dish-style pie. And/or the New York Supreme, with large, floppy slices.
Sauced on Paseo: For the widest array of pizza options — and irreverent toppings — in OKC, hit up Sauced on Paseo, a kitschy counter-service joint that tops thin, NY-style slices with the likes of vegan “chicken parmesan,” whipped ricotta, hot honey glaze and candied bacon.
Dado’s Pizza: An homage to New York-style slice shops, Dado’s Pizza keeps it simple, classic and authentic, with 20-inch pies strewn with toppings like pepperoni, hand-torn basil, fresh mozzarella and juicy Roma tomatoes.
CHICKEN-FRIED STEAK
One of the main facets of the Oklahoma state meal, chicken-fried steak has been a tried-andtrue local pastime since ranchers first sidled into Oklahoma Territory. Today, the decadent dish is just as popular, while contemporary iterations speak to OKC’s ever-growing restaurant scene.
Cattlemen’s Steakhouse: The oldest continuously operating restaurant in Oklahoma, Cattlemen’s Steakhouse is a rightful Stockyards City icon, known for timeworn recipes like chicken-fried steak, flat-griddled and served with cream gravy.
McClintock Saloon: As one of the top cattle markets, it’s fitting that Stockyards City is known for its steaks. Indeed, McClintock Saloon serves a pitch-perfect chicken-fried steak, topped with gravy, in a transportive space laden with taxidermy and polished wood furnishings.
Cheever’s: Chicken-fried steak gets a glow up at this upscale Uptown 23rd standout, where the ambience skews special-occasion worthy and the house version comes with jalapeño cream gravy and garlic red-skinned potatoes.
The Press: The steak comes a little thicker, and a little richer, at The Press, a Plaza District spot that chicken-fries a ribeye filet before serving it with thick country gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans.
Jamil’s Steakhouse: Another old-school classic, Jamil’s is a Lebanese steakhouse known for its smoked bologna and housemade tabouli — but don’t sleep on the chicken-fried steak, a 10-ounce hand-battered beauty heaped with buttery gravy.
PHO
Home to tens of thousands of Vietnamese people, as well as a full-blown Asian District, OKC has become a hub for pho, one of the foremost foods popularized by immigrant communities — so much so that the anise-scented noodle soup is as locally ubiquitous as steak.
Pho Cuong: A cornerstone in the Asian District, this humble and homespun eatery serves a bracing bowl of pho, laden with tender slivers of brisket, tendon, tripe and more.
Pho Lien Hoa: With a few locations scattered around town, Pho Lien Hoa has cemented itself as a local go-to for soulful bowls of herbal broth, brimming with vermicelli noodles, spices and sprouts.
Twenty Pho Hour: Unlike any restaurant in town, Twenty Pho Hour holds the unique distinction of being America’s first 2D noodle restaurant, which means the immersive blackand-white art on the walls makes the dining room feel like one giant comic book.
Riviere Modern Banh Mi: This Midtown mainstay toes the line between classic and contemporary, where scratch-made pho bowls are adjoined by banh mi tacos, bulgogi fries and panko-breaded calamari.
Lido Restaurant: Vietnamese and Chinese cuisines share top billing at this sprawling Asian District staple, where the something-for-everyone menu includes superlative pho slow-simmered with the likes of brisket, tendon, tripe and meatballs.
ONION BURGERS
During the Great Depression, Oklahoma-style onion burgers were invented in nearby El Reno, as grill cooks began smashing thin beef patties with a boatload of slivered onions to help stretch their products and reduce costs. A century later, onion burgers are still a source of Okie pride.
Sun Cattle Co.: Onion-fried hamburgers are the star of the show at this relative newcomer on Film Row, where vintage-inspired decor conjures an air of Wild West lore and the thin ’n’ crispy patties are seared to perfection.
Tucker’s Onion Burgers: A burgeoning local minichain, onion burgers get the fast-casual treatment at these sunny shops, featuring caramelized onions, crispy edges and beef supplied by local farms.
Nic’s Grill: This frills-free, cash-only fixture is easy to spot — just follow the wafting aroma of caramelized onions and the inevitable line. The queue is worth the wait for these fanfavorite burgers, heaped with onions on thickerthan-average patties and fluffy buns.
Bunny’s: As retro as it is hot-pink, this kitschy diner-style joint continues the legacy of the former Joe’s Onion Burgers that stood in its place in the late ‘70s. Nowadays, the vibe is still classic, and the burgers still come smashed with fried onions and specialty toppings like chili, ranch and barbecue sauce.
Burger Punk: For an irreverent option, Burger Punk is the kind of place that tops burgers with truffle mayo, hoisin and Nacho Doritos. It’s also known for its rotating specials, as well as originals like the French Dip Burger, with Swiss, caramelized onions, mayo and au jus.
BISCUITS
Indicative of OKC’s geographic location at the nexus of the South, the Southwest and the Midwest, biscuits are a true-blue Southern comfort food found on many a menu around town, from decadent breakfast sandwiches to buttery side dishes.
Hunny Bunny Biscuit Co.: Biscuits are the star of the show at Hunny Bunny Biscuit Co., an adorable — and wildly popular — counterservice cafe known for its piled-high biscuit sandwiches, like the Charleston, with fried chicken collard greens, hot sauce and an egg.
The Jones Assembly: Scratch-made biscuits are a frequent fixture at The Jones Assembly. At dinner, they’re an apt appetizer, served with honey butter, or alongside Nashville hot chicken, while brunch finds them served with seasonal house jam, or accompanied by hash.
Aurora: Biscuits are the bread and butter at Aurora, a warm and inviting breakfast and brunch favorite in the Plaza District. Try them with classic gravy, maple sausage, white bean hummus or sarsaparilla-braised pork.
Toast & Coffee: Don’t let the name fool you — the jalapeño cheddar biscuits are just as good as the toast and coffee at Toast & Coffee. Fresh outta the oven, these goldenbrown beauties boast ooey-gooey cheese that’s nicely balanced by the peppery bite.
The Red Cup: For a fresh take on biscuits, go meat-free at The Red Cup, an eclectic vegetarian haunt that puts its own stamp on classic comfort foods, like biscuits and gravy made with gluten-free biscuits, herb gravy, scrambled tofu and poblano.
Brunch Like You Mean It
Ask yourself a serious question: Is there a better meal than brunch? Think about your favorite brunch food. Now check yourself – are you smiling? Of course you are. Brunch is the meal of meals! Eggs, cheese, bacon, pastry, pancakes, burgers, coffee and booze all in one meal? Yes, please. Follow it up with a leisurely stroll or a great big nap, and you’ve got the recipe for a darn good day. Lucky for you, OKC is really great at brunch – we’re pretty sure we’ve perfected it! Just look at these choices – you certainly won’t go home hungry!
click here for more info about brunch in OKC
DO YOU DREAM OF PASTRIES?
L’Arc Patisserie in Casady Square will blow your pastry-loving mind. The coffee is fantastic too. Owned by a classically trained chef, the wares are almost too beautiful to eat. Does pastry and coffee qualify as brunch? That’s the beauty of brunch – it does if you say it does! Here, the Cloud Petite, a fluffy concoction of cream cheese mousse, mango puree and berry coulis resting gently atop a sablé cookie, sort of the French version of shortbread. Sometimes the simple choice is the sublime choice, like dunking a perfect rum raisin scone or pecanstudded financier into a steamy bowl of latte.
Kitchen No. 324’s Maple French Cruller is insanely delicious. Also on the regular rotation: apple fritters, cinnamon rolls big enough to share, Danishes, croissants and – for the savory pastry people – a smoked cheddar and jack sausage roll. Quiche is technically a pastry, and Kitchen’s five onion iteration (egg custard, red onion, yellow onion, green onion, leek, shallot, roasted tomatoes and goat cheese, served with a simple arugula salad and crispy potatoes) is heavenly.
The Harvey Bakery & Kitchen has become an instant classic. It really is an “everyday kind of place.” Cheddar, gruyere and green onion scones, classic chocolate croissants, vanilla bean brownies and a daily bread schedule so you can take a loaf home with you. Plenty of gluten-free and vegan options; also plenty of meaty delights like the croque monsieur – ham, provolone, Dijon and bechamel on sourdough.
THE EGG-CEPTIONAL,
THE EGG-CENTRIC AND THE EPIC
Steak and eggs mean something totally different at Cattlemen’s Steakhouse. Filet mignon, T-bone steaks, a perfect rib eye, ham steak with red gravy, a 24-ounce Porterhouse and chicken-fried steak are among your choices here. Hearty three-egg omelets, thick Texas toast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, French toast and more are yours for the asking at this venerable Oklahoma City institution.
Neighborhood Jam falls into this category for a number of reasons. First, its many meat menu categories: ‘Meats,’ ‘Fancy Meats’ and ‘Faux Meats’ sections of the menu. Ground bison (fancy), fried chicken (meat), tofu or soyrizo (faux) and andouille (fancy) are all part of the fun, and there’s more. Also, you could brunch there every day for a year and have a totally unique meal every day. Start with the Whiskey Pig Cakes – candied baconinfused pancakes with bourbon butter, caramel drizzle and a lemon cream swirl, paired with a bottomless drip coffee or an espresso martini.
The Hutch is a little upscale in a very clubby, comfy, wood-paneled way. Frankly, a great way to start is a shared plate of white cheddar and chive biscuits – they come with honey butter and gravy – and, on the right day, a nice, ice cold, perfectly dry martini. From there, the sky’s the limit. If you’re feeling more lunchy than brunchy, the pulled pork sandwich is a thing of beauty. There’s also a classic diner-style breakfast, salmon and eggs or a crispy, pillowy Belgian waffle with strawberries, whipped cream and maple syrup.
OKC BRUNCH LEGENDS
Café Kacao is where to go when you want to brunch like the locals. Do what we do and get on the online waitlist, go about your morning and arrive when it’s your turn. Coffee drinks here are brilliant (see our coffee side bar) and so are the cocktails and mocktails, like the La Casa Verde – rum, cantaloupe, lemon, mint and cucumber bitters. The Cuban omelet is a crowd pleaser – it’s stuffed with shole black beans and Monterrey jack cheese and topped with tendercrisp shredded beef and onions. The crème brulee lava French toast is brioche bread, with passion fruit sauce, fresh fruit and whipped cream. You literally can’t go wrong, so try something exciting!
Look, you need to know about the bleu cheese potato chips at Cheever’s – they’re the ultimate shared starter, so good you’ll find yourself thinking about them days later, maybe for the rest of your life. It’s a tower of house-made Kennebec potato chips topped with plenty of bleu cheese fondue, crumbles, green onion pesto and bacon. Equally decadent? The mascarpone-stuffed French toast, topped with caramelized peaches. The Cheever’s Bloody Mary is a thing of beauty, almost a meal in itself, thanks to the pickled okra, celery and jalapeno. You’ll definitely need a reservation, though, so plan ahead if you can.
Cafe Antigua is a delicious little spot, filled with hearty, beautifully seasoned egg dishes like Mayan eggs (rice, black beans, cheddar, chirmol Guatemalan style salsa, cilantro, avocado and chips) or the Suave Amanecer (eggs, scrambled with black olives, red bells, chives, tomato and onion, served with a bowl of Guatemalan style oatmeal, toast and fruit). Go ahead and sleep in – at Cafe Antigua, breakfast is served all day!
COFFEE: CAFFEINATE AND SEIZE THE DAY!
Café Kacao makes our must-try coffee list because of its excellent classic cuppa Joe thanks to a partnership with local Topeca Coffee Roasters, but even more so for the super-creative coffee concoctions. Try the banana Nutella, horchata, crème brulee or salted caramel pepita lattes! Milk options include oat, almond, coconut or cow.
Not Your Average Joe, in addition to being a darn fine coffee shop, is also a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire the community by hiring students and adults with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities. Add really great coffee, a pretty patio and cute merch to the mix, and it’s a win for everyone!
You’ll find Junction Coffee two ways – the storefront in Automobile Alley and the doubledecker bus that parks and brews in regular locations throughout the week. Here on a Saturday? Enjoy a stroll at Scissortail Park or Myriad Gardens and you might just get lucky! The London Fog is a non-coffee delight – Earl Grey tea, foamy milk and house-made vanilla syrup.
Elemental Coffee roasts its own beans. There are two locations – Midtown and OKC Will Rogers International Airport. The coffee shop standards are excellent thanks to the phalanx of expert coolkid baristas – think flat white, cortado, latte and their ilk – but it’s their pour-overs that really shine. You’ll have to wait a few minutes, pourovers aren’t instant, but it’s well worth the time.
Stella Nova is a relatively new kid on the block, but it’s quickly become a favorite. Try a toasted cinnamon cold foam cold brew or a skinny vanilla latte that tastes truly decadent. The non-coffee drinks are top-notch, too. Frozen lemonade is an absolute gift on a steamy Oklahoma day.
Coffee Slingers Roasters is one of OKC’s first roasteries. Its coffees are handcrafted works of caffeinated art. Some drinks are only available hot and some are recommended to be enjoyed cold, like an aerated iced Americano. Perhaps most unique is the delicious Golden Milk Latte – a house-made blend of turmeric, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon and black pepper, decaf coffee and milk.
The Red Cup serves only LEAP Roasters’ free trade organic coffee, with bean choices including Brazilian, Ethiopian, French, Guatemalan, Mexican, Rwandan, Sumatran or decaf. The vibe here is artsy, cool, casual and a little funky. Sit outside and the neighborhood rooster might pay you a visit as you sip your Sexi Mexi, a mocha latte spiked with cinnamon and Cayenne.
Picks for Every Palate
THE SPLURGES
James Beard winner Chef Andrew Black (Best Chef Southwest 2023) opened Perle Mesta to national acclaim in summer 2024. Located in the historic Skirvin Hotel, the modern American restaurant serves breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. Lunch is very business friendly, but dinner is an elegant dive into Chef’s love of caviar, steak and chops, seafood and truffles.
You can also experience Chef Black’s award-winning fare at Grey Sweater, a tasting menu only concept in a stunning setting. All seatings are for the entire night, so you can enjoy a leisurely meal with brilliant cocktails and an expansive wine selection while tasting dishes with ingredients sourced worldwide.
James Beard Award-winning chef Kelly Whitaker unveils a new, guest-driven concept at Nonesuch in Oklahoma City, featuring collaborative tasting menus with more approachable price points and a la carte options—all grounded in zero-waste practices and locally sourced Oklahoma ingredients.
FOR THE FOOD GEEKS
Chef Jeff Chanchaleune is the rare culinary pro to land on The New York Times’s “The List,” Bon Appetit’s Best New Restaurants, and James Beard’s finalist list twice and semifinalist once. When you taste the food at Ma Der Lao Kitchen, it will all make sense. He presents traditional Lao Cuisine (nam khao, jaew bong, khao soi, etc.) in a modern setting with a chef’s elevated sense of technique, flavor and presentation.
Sedalia’s Oyster and Seafood also landed on Bon Appetit’s list on the strength of Chef Zack Walters’s skill with fresh seafood. Yes, Oklahoma City gets fresh seafood flown in nearly every day of the week. His specialties are crudos, oysters – raw and roasted – sauces and grilled fish of every variety. It’s all served small plate style, and the menu is focused enough that it’s normal around here to order every item, especially the focaccia.
Frida Southwest garnered a James Beard nomination for Best Bar Program in 2023, but that’s only part of what they do extraordinarily well. Executive Chef Quinn Carroll and Pastry Chef Rachel Porter are one of the best one-two punches in Oklahoma, meaning Frida delivers delicious southwestern cuisine from empanadas to seafood alongside scrumptious desserts like Mexican hot chocolate cheesecake complemented by a forward-thinking, adventurous wine list and great cocktails.
FOOD FOR THE PEOPLE
Florence’s was the first James Beard Award winner in Oklahoma, when then 92-year-old Florence Jones received an American Classics Award for what she calls “country cooking.” Her menu is a mashup of soul, Southern and Okie country cuisine, featuring yamfried chicken, turkey neckbones, catfish and Southern specialties like cornbread and okra.
The Jones Assembly combines a massive indoor “patio” with conscientiously sourced food, a robust cocktail program and outstanding service. It’s a brunch destination, but dinner is phenomenal, too, and the patio makes it the perfect place to bring the family. You’ll find live music there many nights, and there are dishes for everyone from kids to omnivores to vegetarians. The drink menu includes classic cocktails, craft beer, an extensive wine list and an inventive beverage program.
No one has won more barbecue championships in the past 15 years than owner of Clark Crew BBQ Travis Clark. And his awards include a win at the famous Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue. It seems Clark has won a championship for nearly every item on the menu, but you’ll want to start with the amazing beans and burnt ends before moving on to brisket, turkey, ribs or even the meal-for-two Diablo Burger.
