Time Travel

Oklahoma sits at the crossroads of our nation, both in location and history.

You will fnd America’s story here. From pioneer settlers, the great cattle trails and the descendants of 67 American Indian tribes, to fortune seekers following oil boom riches and travelers migrating during the 1930s across Route 66, Oklahoma played a vital role in building the heart of the country.

With a state history this varied and layered, you may also discover your story here. Today, Oklahoma is home to 39 federally recognized tribes and preeminant Western and pioneer history collections, drawing genealogy travelers here to explore their roots along our roots.

In 1541, Francisco de Coronado entered what is today Oklahoma. Coronado, a Spanish explorer, was searching for the golden city of Quivira. Cornado and his men traversed part of what is now the Oklahoma Panhandle.

Just visit TravelOK.com/Genealogy to access a comprehensive listing of resources designed for genealogy.

We’ll point you to research libraries that contain copies of the Dawes Rolls if you are tracing Native American ancestors, county courthouses that contain original land patents for pioneering settlers who made the land runs into Oklahoma, and interment lists for many Oklahoma cemeteries.

We’ll introduce you to friendly genealogical and historical societies with a wealth of frsthand knowledge about the records and resources of their counties. And we’ll even provide recommendations for things to see and do near each site you visit.

The Federation of Genealogy Societies awarded the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department the organization’s frst-ever Genealogy Tourism Award in 2011.
