EVENTS SEPTEMBER 18 / BUTTERFIELD BIKER BASH The now famous Butterfield Trail was the main route for pioneers traveling west to search for gold, adventure and a better life. While the old trail has been replaced with modern paved roads, and the stagecoaches and wagons of yesteryear have all but gone away, you can still feel the same thrill of winding your way through the picturesque landscapes and majestic mountain ranges in Latimer County. Historical markers are placed at five original station locations, so be sure to stop for selfies! SEPTEMBER 22 / AUTUMNAL EQUINOX AND DECEMBER 21 / WINTER SOLSTICE WALKS The Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center boasts the only prehistoric Native American archaeological site in Oklahoma that is open to the public. The Caddoan people who lived in the area from 900-1450 AD built 12 mounds along the Arkansas River, some of which line up with solstice and equinox sunsets. Learn about the importance of these mounds and their relationship to the changing of the seasons, as well as Caddoan life on a special guided tour of the grounds with a park archaeologist who will also thrill you with tales of unusual happenings associated with the mounds. In addition to the popular Bigfoot Conference, the Honobia Bigfoot Festival also offers helicopter rides, arts and crafts, children’s activities, live music and storytelling. There’s truly something for everyone, so bring the whole crew and watch out for Bigfoot! OCTOBER 2 / HARD TIMES FESTIVAL Venture into the small town of Hartshorne for the Hard Times Festival and be transported back into the 1930s. This festival celebrates the enduring spirit of those who survived the trying years of the Depression. Enjoy cheap eats like burgers and homemade pies as you share the streets with gangsters and various citizens in period dress and participate in old-fashioned relay races, contests and more. In addition to these festivities, enjoy music by local artists throughout the day. In the evening, attend the Poor Man’s Supper to feast on beans and cornbread or join the fun at the annual Roadhouse Dance. OCTOBER 9-10 / RUNEFEST Don your most creative Renaissance costume and head over to RuneFest, held annually in Heavener Runestone Park. Stroll through a living Viking encampment and then enjoy a giant smoked turkey leg for lunch while you listen to musical stories and folktales from the Celtic tradition. FISHING If you’ve got fishing on the brain, Broken Bow is recognized as one of the premier locations known throughout the U.S. It’s a haven for housing some of the largest variety of freshwater fish and provides ideal conditions for the cooler seasons of the year. Largemouth, smallmouth, white and spotted bass are all signature catches for the area, along with a broad range of trout and walleyes. So, if you’re into adventure – and the colder climate – come drop a line in any one of these sweet honey holes. GLOVER RIVER
MOUNTAIN FORK RIVER
With a thriving, genetically pure population of Ouachita-strain smallmouth, you’re likely to pull out a few 1-to-3 pounders or even larger. Don’t be surprised if you land the occasional spotted or largemouth bass, as well.
While the Upper Mountain Fork River is great for bringing in smallmouth, spotted and even largemouth bass, you just might hook into the occasional white bass or walleye. And if you cast out near the Broken Bow dam, you could even have fresh trout for dinner. Ranging from calm pools to deep areas and aggressive rapids, Mountain Fork River provides a wide variety of different fishing opportunities and species with every cast.
BROKEN BOW LAKE Cast your line into the deep, clear waters at long points extending out into the river, and you’ve got a fairly strong chance of pulling out a largemouth bass upwards of 14 pounds. Broken Bow Lake also harbors both smallmouth and spotted bass to keep the anglers guessing. Don’t forget to take a moment after each cast to soak in the untouched serenity of this gorgeous place.

HUNTING After sitting in the deer stand for hours in the quiet stillness of the early morning dew, the crackling of leaves in the distance alerts the hairs on the back of your neck. Carefully, you take aim, getting the sights perfectly aligned with the animal. You breathe in the crisp air and – as you exhale – you squeeze the trigger. Congratulations, the trophy is yours. This is the thrill of a lifetime for a hunter, and Choctaw Country offers our hunting visitors some of the best areas anywhere for seasonal hunting: from turkey to wild hog and boar to game bird and whitetail deer, bear and even exotics. Come see for yourself – and maybe even come home with the prize of a lifetime. CHOCTAW HUNTING LODGE / DAISY
POGUE RANCH / STRINGTOWN
If you’ve not yet seen Choctaw Hunting Lodge for yourself, it’s an absolute must. The Lodge is surrounded by 44,000 sprawling acres of gorgeous, largely untouched Native American soil. Hunt some of the largest whitetail deer on the same grounds Native hunters have relied on for centuries.
Nestled on over 2,000 acres of breathtaking hunting terrain, hunt exotics like axis, fallow buck, gemsbok and scimitar oryx, or traditional game – any time of the year. The Ranch offers over 9,600 square feet of five-star accommodations for up to 60 guests. You can’t go wrong with this weekend getaway. WILD BOAR RIDGE HUNTING RANCH / SMITHVILLE Wild Boar Ridge offers many hunting options – Fallow Deer, Rams, Feral Goats, and Buffalo to name a few – but their main attraction is their wild boars of incredible sizes – weighing up to 400 pounds! Imagine bringing that trophy home! BIG PRAIRIE BUCKS / ATOKA Besides offering some of the best hunting in southeast Oklahoma, Big Prairie Bucks is over 5,000 acres of some of the most beautiful, undisturbed country you will ever see. An abundance of wildlife makes for a fun, adventurous weekend in the woods. Guided hunts are available for whitetail deer and wild hog using bow, muzzle or gun.
