FY15-295
RIPPED OFF BY AN UNREGISTERED CONTRACTOR? TELL L&I AND HELP OTHER CONSUMERS So you’ve been duped by a dishonest contractor and lost hundreds, perhaps thousands, of dollars intended for your dream remodeling project. Maybe you’re too embarrassed to tell anyone. Maybe you don’t know if there’s an agency that takes such reports. You could file a report with your local police or sheriff’s department. But if it has to do with a construction contractor or tradesperson, make sure you also file a complaint with the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I). Stepping forward could benefit you and prevent other consumers from sharing your fate! If you report it to L&I, the department may assign an inspector to the case and cite the contractor with a civil infraction or recommend the prosecutor file criminal charges. Once you speak with L&I staff, you can learn the options you may have to resolve your issue with the contractor. It’s easy to file a report. Go to www.Lni.wa.gov/Fraud or call 1-888-811-5974 and choose option 1. Consider the case of more than seven Vancouver-area homeowners who felt they were cheated by a paving company. They filed complaints with L&I, and spoke
with L&I construction compliance inspectors and an L&I investigator. L&I submitted the investigation to the Washington Attorney General’s Office, which charged the Vancouver man with unregistered contracting, doing business without workers’ compensation insurance and failing to report or pay workers’ comp premiums. The case is pending. Of course, the best strategy is to avoid problems in the first place. Hiring a registered contractor is a good start. The state requires contractors to register with L&I. The department confirms that they have a business license, liability insurance and bond, which gives homeowners some monetary recourse if something goes wrong. Unregistered contractors often have no bond or liability insurance and fail to provide workers’ comp insurance for their employees. It’s a risky combination that leaves homeowners financially vulnerable if workers are injured on their property or the contractor does shoddy work. Learn how to protect yourself at www.ProtectMyHome.net.

CHIP HANAUER— RETIRED HYDROPLANE DRIVER “Lessons From a Dangerous Life”
The first hydroplane Chip Hanauer, “drove” had a string attached to it and was towed behind his bicycle. By the age of 10, Chip was racing outboard hydroplanes at 30 mph in a class of boats for children from ages 9 to 12 years old. This was the beginning of what would become one of the storied careers in powerboat racing and Seattle sports figures. Chip went on to 61 career victories, seven National Championships and a record 11 Gold Cups in the unlimited class of hydroplane racing. Chip was named by Sports Illustrated as the 19th greatest sports figure from the state of Washington in the twentieth century and, “The thinking man’s racer driver.” Chip is the youngest person ever inducted into the International and the American Motorsports Hall of Fame. Chip was twice nominated as Seattle’s, “Athlete of the Year.” Today Chip studies flamenco guitar, skis, races sailboats, does commentary for KIRO television and volunteers for a number of causes he cares deeply about in the Seattle area.
