Administration Dick Reynolds, who has established himself as one of the most successful basketball coaches in the 109-year history of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), brings those winning traits to his additional position of Athletic Director. Reynolds, who took over the reigns of the men’s athletics department in 1992, was also placed in charge of women’s athletics in 1998 after Otterbein combined both men’s and women’s athletics into one department. A ten-time OAC Coach of the Year selection and two-time Ohio College Coach of the Year, Reynolds has taken his cagers to at least a share of the regular-season conference title 11 times and into the NCAA Division III Tournament 13 times. The Cardinals advanced to the Final Four in 1981 and 1991 and won the national title in 2002. He became the all-time winningest basketball coach in the OAC, surpassing Wooster’s E. M. “Mose” Hole (1926-57) in 1994 and picked up his 600th career win in 2006. Reynolds has compiled a 644-409 record over 39 seasons at Otterbein. Coach Reynolds was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009. Following graduation from Otterbein in 1965, where he was a 12-time letterman in football, basketball and track, Reynolds returned to his home town of London, Ohio, and taught seventh-grade science while serving as an assistant coach in football, basketball and track at the high school. He served three years in the U.S. Air Force (1966-69) as a personnel services officer in charge of recreation. He spent three seasons as an assistant under Otterbein head men’s basketball coach Curt Tong while teaching in the Columbus and Westerville, Ohio school districts from 1969 to 1972. Head Coach Joe Loth, entering his ninth year at the helm of the Cardinal football program, is climbing to the top of the Otterbein football coaching ranks thanks to 23 wins over the last three seasons. Loth, who coaches the quarterbacks, holds the best winning percentage among football coaches with tenures of three or more seasons at Otterbein.
“Finally, Loth said, “we try to organize our program and prepare our players to ensure we accomplish our goals of recruiting, retaining and developing our players.” Loth began his football career as a graduate assistant at Southern Methodist University (1991-93). He served as defensive coordinator at NCAA Division III schools Western Connecticut State University (1993-97) and Capital University (1997-98). Loth spent two seasons as defensive secondary coach at the University of Rhode Island (1998-00) before accepting his first head coaching job at Kean in February 2000. Over the last three summers, Loth has worked as a guest coach in the Canadian Football League, coaching wide receivers at Winnipeg in 2010 and 2011 and Saskatchewan in 2009.
The Cardinals, 6-4 overall in 2010, have recorded three-consecutive winning seasons under Loth’s leadership. Otterbein compiled an 8-2 record in 2009, which followed a record-setting 2008 season.
Loth was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at defensive back as an undergraduate at Otterbein. He earned second team All-OAC honors his senior year in 1990 and still holds the Otterbein career record of 13 interceptions. He received his bachelor’s degree in business.
The Cardinals set a school record for wins in 2008, going 9-2 overall and advancing into the NCAA Division III Football Championship for the first time in school history. Otterbein finished second in the Ohio Athletic Conference with an 8-1 record, with its lone conference loss coming at the hands of Mount Union, who went on to win the national championship. Loth was named “OAC Football Coach of the Year” for the second time in his career as well as “Ohio Coach of the Year” by OhioCollegeFootball.com.
In 2006, Loth was inducted into the Riverside High School Hall of Fame in Painesville, Ohio. Coach Loth and his wife, Keri, have two sons, Zachary, 11, and Tyler, 9.
Loth, a 1991 Otterbein graduate, returned to his alma mater in 2003 after serving three seasons as head football coach at Kean University. The Painesville, Ohio, native has taken part in rebuilding programs throughout his 20-year coaching career. When coming to Otterbein, Loth inherited a program that had just one winning season in the previous 21 years. Over the last six seasons, Loth has guided the Cardinals into the upper half of the tough OAC five times, compiling a 39-22 mark over that period. The Cardinals, under Loth, turned the corner in 2005, finishing the year 7-3 overall and 6-3 in the OAC for their first winning season since 1999 and only their second since 1982. Loth was selected “OAC Football Coach of the Year” by his peers. At Otterbein, the 44-year-old coach has assembled a coaching staff that, including himself, features four former Cardinals. “If you look at the great NCAA Division III programs and the staffs they have, most of their coaches have gone through their program,” Loth said. “I think that’s important.” Loth and his staff have employed a four-step approach in raising the success of Otterbein football. “The first step is to recruit,” Loth said. “We want to recruit as well as anyone in the OAC. The second is retain our studentathletes. It is not always how many student-athletes you bring to campus, it is how many student-athletes you have retained. Thirdly, we look to develop our players mentally and physically, and create a great feeling of team.
