OTTERBEIN CHATTER By BOB WHIPP, Publicity Director

It’s homecoming in more ways than one. Otterbein is playing its first home game of the season with Marietta. The first six games have taken their toll, mentally if not physically. Muskingum, with one of the best teams in recent years and still undefeated in the Ohio Conference, was the first to set back the Cardinals, doing it in a night game 3*^ to 0. Case, very much out of the Otterbein class, sent our boys home with the little end of a 51 to 0 score. Wittenberg at Springfield, claiming the strongest team in years, also 51 points while Otterbein went scoreless. The Cardinals went visiting in Pennsylvania and had another 32 to 0 game with Waynesburg. Bowling Green, among the leaders in the state, .scored 26 points but Bob Weaston, Westerville policeman and three-sport man, intercepted a pass and put the ball in scoring position for Bill Henry, another Westerville product, who made the first and only score of the season. Ashland won the last road game 18 to 0 in a snow storm.

The boys are home. Their own field, friends in the stands, and the determination to win may change the picture. Marietta has always been a tough opponent for Otter bein, even . when the Cardinals were the

stronger of the two. They have the edge to day but they have been defeated twice and can be again. In the Ohio Conference they have scored only one touchdown the same as Otterbein, while opponents have made 52 points. The grads are home. Among them is the new president, himself a football player who found that other teams were sometime stronger in scoring power but not in spirit. “J. R.” has been in the stands rooting for the team. His support in the early games away from home has been felt and appreciated. There are others on the faculty and ad ministrative staff who are home. They have found wa3vs they can repay Old Otterbein for some of the unseen blessings bestowed in the past. After the game President and Mrs. Howe, “J. R.” and “Betsy” or “Mar)^ Elizabeth” to many, will open their home to alumni and friends. Then at 6:30 there is the annual homecoming banquet for alumni, followed by the play. At 10:30 there will be another homecoming—with literary societies revived for a night.

Win or lose—and we are all pulling for a win—it will be a grand homecoming.

GREETINGS TO ALUMNI AND FRIENDS OF OTTERBEIN Greetings to Alumni and Friends of Otterbein: Welcome home! We are happy to salute you and to pass a word for '‘auld lang syne” as you come back once again to the campus and to the halls of old Otterbein. May this Homecoming be rich in fellow ship and in festivity and in the renewed com radeship of golden days that are gone and yet that shall be ours forever. But more import ant still, may this day be the occasion of new dreams and fairer visions of the Otterbein that is to be. In behalf of your college, I congratulate you upon the things you have already helped licr to accomplish. A great advance, both in enrollment and in achievement, already marks the record of the new year. There are great days ahead for ‘'our loved Otterbein”. I covet for her your enthusiastic and loyal sup port and for each one of you the privilege of sharing wholeheartedly in the record of the glorious things that are to come. Cordially and sincerely yours, J. R. HOWE, President.

OTTER BEIN COACHES Sam T. Selby, new athletic director and head coach, is the product of an Otterbein graduate, Elmo Lingrell, ’17, of Middletown, Ohio, high school. He attended Ohio State University and was awarded three football letters, being captain in 1930, his senior year. Based upon his splendid performance as Ohio State guard, Sam was chosen on the 1930 all east team and given honorable mention on the All-American. Otterbein is happy to welcome Mr. Selby as an important cog in her “new era” program.

John K. Cox, Colgate University captain and center in 1929, is the new assistant foot ball coach. He graduated from Stuebenville, Ohio, high school in 1925 and attended Adrian College where he was varsity tackle and a member of the basketball team. He went to Colgate on a full scholarship and played center in 1927-1929 without missing a game. He wns a member of the all-east team that de feated the western group 19-7 on January 1, 1930. Mr. Cox comes to Otterbein from Alfred College and Martins Ferry High School.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT ISSUES LIFETIME PASSES TO ALL VARSITY O MEMBERS

Homer Lambert of Anderson, Ind., captain of Otterbein’s football team in 1910 and again in 1911, has been honored with Varsity “O” pass No. 1 for 1939-40. His selection is the result of his continued support of athletics since his graduation in 1912. The issuance of an annual pass to members of the Varsity “O” association is one of the innovations of the new athletic director, Sam T, Selby, with the cooperation of the new president. Dr. J. Ruskin Howe, himself a member of the lettermen’s group. The pass admits men who won letters to all home events. In the past a pass has been issued for only the homecoming football and basketball games. The holder of No. 1 pass is not considered the outstanding athlete produced at Otterbein but rather a representative player who made and is still making a defininte contribution to his alma mater. Lambert, the first to receive No. 1 pass, is the son of a former president of the board of trustees and Lambert hall was erected in memory of his mother. Mrs. E. M. Hursh is a sister. Children of an older sister have also made definite contributions to Otterbein’s ath letics.
