Otterbei'n Is Muskie Foe In Opening Home Game Tonight's game is the first at home this sea son and it also marks the first time since 1953 that the Huskies have come up to their third game without a victory. Coach Bob Stokes promised some changes after last Saturday night’s 7-0 defeat at the hands of Marietta and this week’s practice has emphasized “fundamentals”, he said, pointing to mistakes which accounted for the 13-13 tie in the opener at West Liberty and the loss at Marietta. The Cardinals of Otterbein College are re ported stronger than the team which bowed to the Huskies 53-7 last season. In this year’s opening game, they lost by only one point, 27-26, to Susquehanna of Pennsylvania, and last week were defeated by Ashland, 42-14. Although his name does not appear in the starting lineup, Eric Nuppola, a freshman from Toronto, Canada, is the Otterbein ball-carrier to watch, according to advance word from Wes terville. He is expected to divide the tailbacking chores with Steve Deringer. Nuppola is the leading ground-gainer up to now, carrying 34 times for 114 yards. Muskingum’s offensive star to date has been Dave Heimerl, a junior, who has accounted for 228 of the team’s 252 rushing yards to date. In a 35-game series dating back to 1905, Mus kingum has won 21 games, Otterbein 12, and two have ended in ties. The Huskies have taken the last six.

Facts About Muskingum Muskingum College is a coeducational liberal arts school, founded in 1837 by a group of far sighted citizens of New Concord to supply an op portunity for higher education in a rapidly-de veloping area which was still a part of the Amer ican frontier. Since 1870, Muskingum has been associated with the United Presbyterian Church. The enrollment last year was 1405, the stu dents coming from 33 states and nine foreign countries. President of the college is Dr. Harry S. Manley, who came to the campus three years ago from Monmouth College, Illinois, where he was academic dean. A graduate of Westminster Col lege in Pennsylvania, he received the Doctor of Philosophy degree from Duke University. Muskingum’s campus is considered one of the most beautiful in the country, occupying 215 acres of rolling land overlooking the village of New Concord. There are 15 major buildings in cluding three residence halls for men and three for women. Soon to be built on the campus is a $4 million Science Center which will make it possible to convert the present science building, Cambridge Hall, to other academic uses. Among the best known of Muskingum’s alum ni are William Rainey Harper, now deceased, founder and first president of the University of Chicago; John Glenn, the first American astro naut to orbit the earth; Agnes Moorehead. the actress, and the Rev. Howell Forgy, World War II navy chaplain who originated the famous battle cry, “Praise the Lord and Pass the Am munition.”

MuskingurrCs football team has not one but six captains this fall Kneeling, left to right, are Bruce Rannow, Athens; Vern Albery, Newark, and Joe Handrahan, Glenshaw, Pa. Standing: Hank Martensen, Columbus; Greg Freda, Braddock, Pa, and Pete Brookhart, Newark. All are seniors.

“Four Big Huskies’’ is the title of this picture. Left to right are three Muskingum linemen: Eric Humston, defensive end, 200 pounds; Bruce Rannow, offensive end, 215 pounds, and Scott Graeler, offensive tackle, 225 pounds. The line backer behind them is “Big Muskie,’’ 27 million pounds. The name has been given by the Ohio Power Co. to the world’s largest dragline, w’hich is being assembled near Cumberland, 10 miles south of the Muskingum campus, for strip mining work in the company’s coal fields. ONE

Athletic Director Had Great Coaching Record Athletic director at Muskingum College is Ed gar A. Sherman, who retired from active foot ball coaching at the end of the 1966 season fol lowing 22 years of unparalleled success at the Muskie gridiron helm. Sherman is a Newark high school graduate, having been an All-Central Ohio League quar terback there. At Muskingum, he played var sity football under the legendary Bill Lange, who is remembered as one of the great coaches in Ohio Conference history. Graduating in 1936, Sherman began his coaching career that fall at Newark high school. In 1943, he returned to Muskingum as swim ming instructor for the war-time ASTP unit and to assist in football and basketball. The next year, he went to Miami University as football assistant to Sid Gillman. He came back to Mus kingum once more in 1945, this time as head football coach and director of athletics. Sherman’s success has even eclipsed that of hero. Bill Lange. Only twice in his 22 years did the Muskies have a losing sea son. During that time, they won 141, lost 43 and hed 7. Six times, his teams have led the Ohio Conference and were unbeaten three times m regular-season play. In 1955 and again, in 1965, Sherman was se eded as the Ohio College Coach of the Year. Early last year, he received national recognition

Edgar A. Sherman

in the form of the Helms Award and the Sports Magazine Award, and was honored by Ohio State University with its “Winningest Coach” award.

George Klein, Jim Burson. Boh Stokes, Ron Fenik and Walt Nadzak. BOB STOKES, Head Coach

Now in his second year at the Muskie coach ing helm, Robert S. Stokes emerged from his initial season with a team that won eight of its nine games. Stokes, native of Frazeysburg, graduated in 1953 from Muskingum, where he was an out standing football and basketball player, winning All-Conference honors in both sports and Little All America recognition as a football halfback. After graduation, he was a member of the Muskie coaching staff for three years, then coached basketball at Ashland College for seven seasons before returning to his alma mater in 1965 as head basketball coach and assistant pro fessor of physical education. WALT NADZAK, Offensive Line Coach

Walter Nadzak Jr., a former Denison Uni versity athlete, is serving his fourth year on the Muskie coaching staff. In addition to his foot ball duties, he is also varsity baseball coach. Nadzak is a graduate of Ambridge high school in Pennsylvania and graduated in 1957 from Denison, where he was an All-Ohio Conference lineman for three years. In his senior year, he was co-captain and most valuable player on the Denison team. For three years after gradua tion, he was a Marine officer and now holds the rank of captain in the Marine reserves. He received his master’s degree from Xavier Uni versity. JIM BURSON, Offensive Backfield

Another former Muskie athlete, Jim Burson, returned to his alma mater three years ago as assistant basketball coach. He also coached the

varsity tennis team. With the appointment of Stokes as head football coach last year, Burson was named varsity basketball coach. After graduation from Muskingum in 1963, Burson coached for a year at Worthington high school under Ralph Sabock, another former Muskingum athlete, before returning to his alma mater. In 1966, he received his master’s degree from Ohio State University. RON FENIK, Defensive Line

A native of Lorain and a former All Mid American Conference lineman at Ohio Univer sity, Ronald J. Fenik joined the Muskingum coaching staff last fall after receiving the mas ter of education degree from Xavier University. He holds the rank of instructor in the depart ment of physical education. Fenik coached high school football at MacArthur and Bellefontaine before joining the staff at Xavier University in 1965. In his senior year at Ohio University, he was co-captain and most valuable player on the Bobcat football squad. GEORGE KLEIN, Trainer

George Klein, former Muskingum College basketball star, returns to his alma mater this fall as a physical education instructor, football trainer and assistant basketball coach. Klein compiled an outstanding record during the past two years as head basketball coach at Worthington high school where his teams won 35 games while losing only six. A native of Louisville, in Stark County, he graduated from Muskingum in 1962 and re ceived his master’s degree from Ohio State Uni versity in 1965. SEVEN
