Football is a great tradition at Otterbein College. It launches the fall athletic competition and provides an atmosphere of school spirit for the entire com munity. One of Otterbein's strengths lies In the total college commitment to competitive football, as well as the superb pageantry provided by the marching band. The athletic staff is appreciative of the support re ceived from the college administration, faculty, stu dents, community and the "O" Club. Otterbein athletic teams are preparing for another successful year in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Go Otters!!

COACHES Rebuilding is a never-ending job for a football coach sixth-year Cardinal Coach Rich Seils is again faced with filling some very big shoes. The ability to rebuild and rebound from a poor season was evident at Otterbein as the Cardinals came off a 2-6-1 season in 78 to finish 6-3 in 79. Despite losing two All-Americas to graduation, Seils is confident that Otterbein football is again in fine shape in this' rebuilding ' year. Such confidence is due to consistency—re gardless of the variety of talent over the years. Seils has managed to mold his charges into hard-hitting, power running teams which have now won 60 percent of their games (26-17-2). Although the bounce of the ball can mean triumph or defeat in many games, consistence over the seasons is due to the program . . . the time, effort and sacrifice of players and coaches. Coordinating the many facets of strength and strategy will be the job of Coach Seils. A 1967 graduate of Denison University, Seils captained the 1966 Big Red squad to an 8-1 record for which he was honored as the team’s Most Valuable Player and earned All-OAC honors. Off to Ohio University where he received a Masters Degree in physical education in 1969, Seils assisted with freshman football in 1967 and oversaw the frosh fortunes in 1968. In the fall of 1969 Seils moved to Grandview Heights High School as assistant football coach and head wrestling coach. One year later he assumed GHHS's head football spot. Defiance College was Seils' next station where in 1971 he assumed responsibilities as offensive coordinator for the Yellowjacket gridders as well as being DC s head wrestling coach. Then 1973 brought Seils to Otterbein as then coach Robert "Moe " Agler's top assistant. Seils took over the Cardinal head coaching reigns following the 1974 season. In 1975 Seils coached Otterbein to a 4-5 record which was quite successful for a school which was used to just two or three victories each year. Seils’second campaign produced his first winning season asa college head coach, 6-2-1. Then 1977's edition tied the best ever school record with an 8-1 showing before key injuries and the loss of eight All-Conference players dropped the cardinals to 2-6-1 in 1978. The rebound and rebuild of 79 left Otterbein at 6-3 and 4-1, only one game from the Blue Division title. For '80, Seils is hoping the consistency of past teams combines with the speed and versatility of top-notch Cardinal players to produce that elusive championship team at Otterbein.

HAVENS

SCOTT

GASSER 170 QB 60' Logan(Logan)

Humphrey has seen action at several positions. . .lettered as a freshman when he was the top backup linebacker. . .tested at defensive end. . .considered a starting candidate at left defensive end. An All-City defender for Walnut Ridge in 1977, Seils Considers Humphrey a "quick, aggressive and strong" player Who has been underrated in the past. . .expects a versatile starter in '80.

Saw limited duty as a quarterback in 1979 after starting four games in 1978. A top athlete with good speed and physical ability .... Seils hopes to convert those attributes to defense where Krumpak is a good prospect for defensive secondary In 78 he passed for 315 yards on 28 of 66 attempts, scored two IDs rushing.

PLAYER PROFILES DOUG

IS

ALWAYS

A

" WINNER"

The man who wins is an average man, Not built on any peculiar plan; Nor blest with any peculiar luck Just steady and earnest and full of pluck.

So he works and waits till one fine day There’s a better job with bigger pay; And the men who shirked whenever they could Are bossed by the man whose work made good.

When asked a question, he does not guess He knows and answers, ‘No’, or ‘Yes’; When set a task that the rest can’t do. He buckles down till he’s put it through.

For the man who wins is the man who works Who neither labor nor trouble shirks; Who uses his hands, his head, his eyes -The man who wins is the man who tries.

Year 1980 is very special to the Otterbein "O" Club marking our 25th year supporting Otterbein College Intercollegiate Athletics. Membership, which consists of former Varsity "O" Lettermen, other alumni, friends and businessmen, has grown from 85 to 1526 over the past twenty-five years. Over the past years, the "O" Club has had a number of projects which have benefited the Athletic Department and the College. The most recent project-the purchase of two new twelve passenger vans for use by the athletic teams and coaches for away games. In addition to these projects, the Club contributes annually to the purchase of athletic equipment for all sports from annual dues. President Kerr, his staff and the trustees have always expressed their appreciation for the support that the "O" Club has given -he Athletic Department, and acknowledges that without your support they could not maintain a sound, respectable and competitive ath letic program. The "O" Club Officers and members extend best wishes to all the teams for a successful 1980 - 1981 year.
