OTTERBEIN CARDINALS VS. Mount Union
1982 Observations from the President’s Box THOMAS J. KERR, IV
Football and Fall! In Ohio the two are synonymous. We love the crispness and coloration of Fall. The excitement and pageantry of college football add flavor to Fall. They create not only an atmosphere of fun but one of significant symbolism. Otterbein, like its Ohio Athletic Conference competitors, is a liberal arts college with a strong Christian tradition. We are committed to the education of the individual for life as well as profession. The classroom experience is primary. The total experience in the Otterbein environment offers additional opportunities for personal growth. Football is representative. Football symbolizes hard work and deep commitment, both individual and collective. It symbolizes discipline and fair play. Values and self identity are explored by competi tion, team play, leadership and followership all in creative tension. The efforts of the marching band, cheerleaders, broadcasters, statisticians, managers and trainers provide similar learning opportunities through creative experiences. Most symbolic of all, the pageantry of football builds sense of community for students, faculty and staff and for alumni and friends. An Otterbein football game involves nearly one-fifth of the students. I commend each for contributions and com mitment which bring you growth while bringing enjoyment to others. I congratulate Head Coach Rich Seils, in his tenth season, Band Director Gary Tirey, in his 15th year, and their staffs for superb leadership. To each fan, I say enjoy the game. But look beyond momen tary pleasure with pride to the meaning of total experience.

The 1981-82 year was a very successful one for Otterbein athletic teams. At the onset of this year's sports season, commencing with football and cross country, the entire college and in particular the players and coaching staff, are eager to begin with the same enthusiasm for success. We appreciate the college and community support and will strive to provide excit ing competition for our fans. The Ohio Athletic Confer ence and NCAA Division stimulates keen competition among its members and Otterbein plans to be competi tive in every sponsored sport. May I extend good luck to all our teams and look forward to seeing all of our fans at the games as we launch our 92nd year of football.

COACHES HEAD COACH RICH SEILS
In seven seasons at the helm of the Otterbein College football program Rich Seils has compiled a 38-23-2 record—good for a 62 percent winning percentage. After a 4-5 campaign in his initial season, Seils’ Cardinals have only once slipped below the .500 mark. In short, Seils has built a solid program at Otterbein. 1982 offers another big challenge for Seils. Six All-OAC per formers are gone from a veteran 1981 defensive unit, which posted consecutive shut-outs against Capital and Marietta while permitting Ohio Wesleyan and Oberlin only one touchdown each. The '82 offense appears strong with experience and depth at every position but tight end. The Cardinals will once again be a dominant ball control team with several talented ball carriers return ing from the run-oriented Otterbein offense of 1981. The potential is promising for the Cards to be serious OAC con tenders again in 1982. Coach Seils has a tradition of excellence in the Ohio Conference, in which he starred as a center for Denison University and was cap tain in 1966 when the Big Red went 8-1.-The 1967 graduate was selected his team’s Most Valuable Player and earned All-OAC honors. At Ohio University he received a master’s degree in physical education in 1969, assisted with freshman football in 1967 and directed the frosh in 1968. In the fall of 1969 Seils moved to Grandview Heights High School as assistant football coach and head wrestling coach, a year later assuming the head football spot. Defiance College was Seils’ next station. In 1971 he assumed responsibilities as offensive coordinator for the Yellowjacket gridders as well as being DC’s head wrestling coach. In 1973 Otterbein Coach Robert “Moe” Agler brought in Seils as an assistant, and he assumed the top job following the 1974 season. Last year, Seils served as president of the OAC Football Coaches, and he is currently serving a one-year term as president of the Westerville Rotary. As a member of the Westerville community, Seils has been involved in many local projects including fundraising activities for Boy Scouts and the American Cancer Society. He and his wife, Robin, have two children.
ASSISTANT COACHES FRED DONELSON . . . defensive ends . . . former Otterbein offensive line coach of three years ago. Fred played fullback for Otterbein from 1972 to 1975. He is currently a teacher at New Albany High School where he teaches science and serves as the varsity basketball coach. He and his wife live in Gahanna. dick REYNOLDS . . . offensive backs ... 12th year at Otterbein. Dick received a BA at Otterbein where he earned 12 varsity letters and was a defensive back, wide receiver, and quarterback on the football team. He was also a guard for the Cardinal basketball team and a pole vaulter and long jumper in track. Reynolds received an MS degree from Xavier University in 1971. He is the head basket ball coach at Otterbein and is the winningest cage coach in the school’s history. Dick has posted a 164-93 career record, and his 1981 squad advanced to the final four of the NCAA Division III tour nament. Coach Reynolds, 38, and his wife Ellen have two children.
DOUG WELSH . . . offensive line . . . Beginning his sixth season with the Cardinals, Welsh is a 1968 graduate of Muskingum College where he was a stand-out defensive back for four years. He still holds the OAC career interception record of 20. Welsh is presently a teacher at Reynoldsburg High School where he was a former baseball and football coach. Doug, 36, is married and has two children.
PORTER MILLER .. . defensive line ... A twelve year Cardinal coaching veteran, Miller received his BA from Otterbein in 1966 and an MA from Xavier University in 1972. Porter was an offensive guard at Otterbein and now is an instructor in the Otterbein College physical education department. As head track coach, he has coached eight All-Americas. Coach Miller, 40, and his wife have three children. JOHN HUSSEY. . . linebackers .. . Although he enters his first season as coach, John Hussey is no stranger to Otterbein football. A 1978 graduate of Otterbein, John was an All-OAC selection at middle guard for the 1977 team which recorded an 8-1 mark. Hussey is currently a teacher at Reynoldsburg High School where he gained coaching experience as an assistant with the Reynoldsburg football team. BILL HILLIER . . . defensive backfield . . . After a one year absence in 1981, Bill returns to Otterbein for this third year as a Cardinal assistant coach. Hillier was a four-year starter at quarterback for the Cards from 1974-1977. His career total of 5,074 yards ranks him third on the OAC career total offense chart. Bill was the leader of the 1977 Otterbein squad which finished 8-1—tying the school’s record for best football season ever. Bill is married and has one child.

Mike has a good chance to step into one of the vacated secondary spots in ’82. Seils describes him as “having good football instincts.” Dietzel brings intelligence and an ability to read offenses to a young Cardinal defensive backfield. He will be in heated competition for a starting berth in August. Mike is a life science major.

Burdette had a strong finish in 1981, gaining 92 of his 104 yards in the season’s final two games. He scored a key touchdown in the Capital game to put a close defensive strug gle out of reach. Possessing deceptive speed for a back of his size, Burdette could surface as a strong offensive sparkplug in the Cardinals’ dominant ground game. As a freshman, Rick gained valuable experience which should help him become a starter in 1982. Burdette is a business administration major.

The three-year letterman was a valuable asset to the Cardinals special teams last season, leading Otterbein in punt returns with 51 yards on 17 attempts. According to Seils, “John could be a great player when he develops his strength to its full potential.” John majors in business administration.
A pleasant surprise last season. Rick surfaced as a truly talented ball carrier. His 388 yards topped all Cardinal rushers, and Goodrich’s 7.1 yard average is even more impressive. Rick scored a game ending 8-yard TD against Kenyon to seal a 28-20 victory, and tallied three other times during the ’81 season. “Rick has a good speed and enough moves to break the long one for us,” said Seils. “I think his statistics speak for themselves. Denijs is a business administration major.

With a few breaks and continuance of his past consistency, Jim Hoyle could surface as'a bona fide All-America candidate in 1982. The three-time All-OAC kicker has twice tied the Otterbein record for extra points in a game (6), and shattered Cardi nal marks for most PAT’s in a season (29 in 1981), and career (51). Hoyle has also equalled the school’s record for most field goals in a game (2), and a single season (8 in 1980). If Jim con nects on four field goals in ’82, he will break the career mark for three-pointers at Otterbein and assure himself of at least a share of every Cardinal kick-scoring mark in the book. The veteran placement specialist is also quite adept at driving his kick-offs into the opposition’s end zone, giving the Cardinal defense many opportunities to create outstanding field posi tion. Hoyle, who was named Most Valuable Freshman in 1979, hit .405 for the Otterbein baseball team last spring. Jim is a business administration major. Seils noted, “Chris could help us as a return specialist as well.’’ Roark holds a career 3.2 yards per carry average. Chris is a health and physical education major. TOM
SCHORR OT 6’2” 230 Sr Lancaster (Lancaster) “This should be Tom’s year,’’ said Seils. Big, strong, and talented, Schorr will return to his starting right tackle position of 1981. A possible All-OAC candidate, Tom brings experience and leadership to the offensive front. He will be a key force behind this year’s offensive effort. Shorr majors in health and physical education.
SKIP
RAUSH TE 6’4” 210 Sr Columbus (Independence) The only offensive area where Coach Seils feels the Cardinals are lacking experience is at the tight end position Senior Skip Raush will be involved in a battle for that job. Skip was primarily used in goal line situations in 1981 but will be a top candidate to handle the regular duties which were vacated by the gradua tion of Steve Hakes. Raush is a health and physical education major.
MONTE
SIMMONS C 6’0” 190 Dayton (Northridge)
Sr
Simmons was the Cardinal starter at center for seven games last fall but will be involved in competition with Ron Kyle for the starting berth in August. A two-time letterman, Simmons has the strength arid size to get the job done in the middle. Monte is a student in Otterbein’s art department.

“One of the best all-around athletes on the squad,” noted Sells, Jim should see plenty of action at one of the two halfback slots. The fourth leading returnee in rushing yardage. Smith has also proven himself as a fine receiver (five recep tions for 90 yards in ’81). Voted Most Valuable Freshman in 1980, Smith was also the OAC’s best pole vaulter during the 1982 track and field season. Jim is majoring in health and physical education.
Brian became a factor late in the season last fall, seeing con siderable action at split end. His only catch of the year was a key 35-yarder which set up the opening touchdown of the Oberlin game. Valentine has “confidence and good football sense,” Sells said. He will be a strong competitor for the first string split end job. Brian is a business administration major.

John Should be right in the thick of the fight for starting defen sive line positions in August. He has “good quickness and strength,” Sells said, and will be given serious consideration at tackle. Voytilla, a two-year letterman, is a history major.
After missing the first two games last fall, Torgerson came back to lead all Cardinal receivers with 15 catches for 234 yards. Dave has “great hands and can get open,” said Sells. He will be Brook McDonald’s primary target once again in 1982. Torgerson’s best outings in ’81 were against BaldwinWallace (four catches for 66 yards) and Kenyon (three for 65 yards). YURICH
Coach Rich Sells has placed a defensive end on the All-OAC team in each of his seven seasons as the Otterbein head men tor. Gary Ubry appears to be the heir to the Cardinal wide side end position—a spot which perennially creates a lot of atten tion. 1981’s Most Valuable Freshman, Ubry started every game as a defensive end last fall. “He has all the tools necessary to be a great defensive ballplayer,” said Sells. “We’ll be counting on Gary’s experience and ability this year.” Ubry is a business administration major.

RAIDERS FEATURE DANGEROUS ATTACK by Rich Dalrymple Otterbein Sports Information Director The Purple Raiders of Mount Union College bring a “new look” offense into tonight’s clash with Otterbein at Memorial Stadium. The Raiders, who are traditionally a strong running team, have developed into a balanced power with a potent blend of passing and the usual solid MUCg round game. The big name behind the offensive attack is Tony Colao — a 6-4, 218 pound strong armed quarterback — who came to coach Ken Wable’s squad via a transfer from the U.S. Naval Academy. Colao has hit for 26 of 52 passes for 374 yards and 3 touchdowns in directing the Raiders in opening victories over Alma and Hiram. Colao’s primary receiver thus far has been running back Dave McLaughlin — 6 receptions for a 17.8 yard average. “Mount Union is a dangerous offensive threat from anywhere on the field,” commented Otterbein head coach Rich Seils. “They throw the ball well, and have two very talented ball carriers in (Phil) Tartt and (Dave) McLaughlin.” Tartt, a senior running back, has collected 248 yards with a 5.5 average in 1982, while McLaughlin has picked up 126 yards rushing in two games. Both seniors were first team All-Ohio Athletic Conference performers last fall — and together, the duo gives coach Wable the finest rushing combination in the conference. The Tan and Cardinal effort to shut down the Mount Union ground game will be a major factor in determining tonight’s outcome. Otterbein’s defense found great success against the running game in last week’s 23-14 win over Kenyon. The Cardinal defensive front — led by middle guard Tony Keels and sophomore defensive end Gary Ubry — permitted Kenyon just 11 yards net rushing a week ago. Keels spearheaded the attack by racking up 13 tackles, 3 sacks, a broken pass, and a forced fumble — en route to being named the OAC’s defensive player-of-the-week. Another key sidelight to the Cardinal-Raider match-up will be the Otterbein secondary —and how well the Cards can contain Colao’s aerial attack. Paced by safety Tom Lucas, who scored two touchdowns in as many weeks on first quarter interception returns, the Otterbein defensive backfield will once again be put on the spot. The Otterbein offense appears to be coming into its own after some early season errors. The Cards have averaged 23.5 points per game and are led by quarterback Brook McDonald (156yards passing and 36 yards rushing) and senior placekicker Jim Hoyle. Hoyle, who has tallied 17 points on the year, has booted field goalsof 44, 40, 37, and 26 yards. In last week’s win, he establishedanall-ti me Otterbein field goal mark of 22 career three-pointers. Another Mount Union trademark, however, is its aggressive and stingy style of defensive play. This year’s squad — led by former Westerville South star Mark Kingston — looks to be rather strong once again. It all adds up to a very interesting evening of college football. Forthe record — Seils has compiled a2-3 record against Mount Union, while Raiderscoach Ken Wable is 5-2 against Otterbein. MUC leads the all-time series with a 10-4 victory margin. The Otterbein—Mount Union rivalry began in 1937.
