Game Day 2001
Message
from the
President
Otterbein College this year continues its proud tradition of athletic and academic excellence. As the new millennium begins, Otterbein has enjoyed over 100 years of intercollegiate competition. During that time, the College's mission has been to balance academics and athletic competition. Our commitment has been to the whole person, both in and out of the classroom. Our coaches are teachers first, mentors who make deep and lasting impressions on their students. While the drive to win is important, our real commitment lies in developing leadership traits and the competitive spirit, which will
C. Brent DeVore
aid our scholar athletes throughout their lives. On behalf of Otterbein's faculty, students and administration, we thank you for your support of Otterbein's athletics programs in 2001-2002 and for your continuing involvement in their successes.

Administration Dick Reynolds, who has established himself as one of the most successful basketball coaches in the 98-year history of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), brings those winning traits to his additional position of athletics director. The 58-year-old Reynolds, who took over the reigns of the men’s athletics department in 1992, was also placed in charge of women’s athletics in 1998 after Otterbein combined both men’s and women’s athletics into one department. Head Coach Paul “Rocky” Alt begins his first season as head coach at Otterbein College. Alt, 52, comes to Otterbein via Northern Illinois University where he served as quarterbacks coach. He brings over 29 years of coaching experience to his new assignment. The native of Crestline, Ohio, replaces Head Coach Wally Hood, who retired "Rocky" Ait from coaching at the end of the 2000 season. “Coach Alt brings the right qualities to our football program, and I think Otterbein is a good match for him as well,” said Otterbein director of athletics Dick Reynolds on Alt’s appointment last January. “We expect coach Alt to pick up where we are right now, and further enhance the program to make us more competitive in football,” Reynolds said. This marks Alt’s first collegiate head coaching position. “We want to be wide open,” Alt said about his philosophy on offense. “We want to run the ball and throw the ball. We want to spread people out—put the defense on islands, so to speak—to make it easier to run and easier to throw. “Defensively,” he continued, “I expect us to be hard-nosed, hard hitting and aggressive. I don’t want us to be timid. I don’t want us to hold back. I want us to pressure people. I expect our guys to play hard and tough all the time.” Alt, who has spent his entire career on the offensive side of the ball, served as quarterbacks coach at Northern Illinois (1996-2000); running backs coach at the University of Hawaii (1990-95) and the University of Kansas (1986-88); and offensive coordinator at Morehead State University (1984-86). Northern Illinois led the Mid-American Athletic Conference in scoring, 37.2 points a game, and total offense, 427 yards per contest, on its way to a 6-5 record in 2000. While at Hawaii in 1992, the Rainbow Warriors tallied an 11-21 record, won the
Western Athletic Conference, and defeated the University of Illinois, 27-17, in the Holiday Bowl. His teams at Morehead led the Ohio Valley Conference in passing—setting six school records on offense—in 1984 and finished second in 1985. A two-sport standout at Wittenberg University, Alt graduated in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. He received his master’s degree in physical education in 1972 from Bowling Green State University. As a quarterback at Wittenberg, Alt led the Tigers to a 19-0 record and Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) titles in 1969 and 1970. He won the Mike Gregory Award, presented to the most valuable offensive back in the OAC, and earned honorable mention AllAmerica honors in 1970. He was a two-time all conference selection as a pitcher in 1970 and 1971, finishing his career with a 1.64 ERA and 241 strikeouts over 248-1/3 innings of work. He was inducted into the Wittenberg Hall of Fame in 1993. Alt began his football career as a graduate assistant at Bowling Green (1971-72), followed by stints as quarterbacks and receivers coach at Marshall University (1974-75), offensive line coach at Wittenberg (1976-77), and quarterbacks and backfield coach at Southern Illinois University (1977-78). Along the way, Alt coached at several Ohio and Indiana high schools. He served as head football coach at Center Grove, Greenwood, IN, from 1980-84 and 1988-90; and quarterbacks and backfield coach at Hamilton (OH) Taft, from 1978-80, and Struthers (OH), from 1972-74. He and his wife. Sue, have two children, a daughter, Traci, 31, who lives in Dayton, OH, and a son, Brian Paul, 24, who lives in Rochelle, IL. They have three grandchildren. The Alts reside in Westerville.

Otterbein Breaks Ground on New Recreation Center Otterbein College broke ground on The Frank and Vida Clements Recreational and Fitness Center at a special ceremony hosted by the Ot terbein College Board of Trustees May 19. The $9.5 million center will enhance the curriculum and clinical experiences for students preparing for careers in health, fitness and athletic training. In addition, the center will significantly increase the enrollments in the athletic training, sport management, and health and fitness programs; increase the health, wellness and recreation programs for students, faculty and staff; enhance Otterbein’s capacity to
attract future students; and expand the opportunities for partnership with the wider Columbus community. The center will have two components: a 70-80,000 squarefoot field house, complete with a sanctioned six-lane, 200-meter indoor track; and a two-story connector to the existing Rike Center, which will feature a high-tech cardio-vascular fitness area, fullyequipped training and rehabilitation center, coaching offices, classrooms and a student lounge area.
Fundraising continues for this new building, with $7.2 million of the $9.5 million needed already pledged or committed. The campaign is expected to extend up to the completion of the building in the fall of 2002.
