During that time, the Colleges mission has been to balance academics and athletic competition. Our commitment has been to the whole person, both in and out of the classroom. Our coaches are teachers first, mentors who make deep and lasting impressions on their students. While the drive to win is important, our real commitment lies in develop ing leadership traits and the competitive spirit, which will aid our scholarathletes throughout their lives. On behalf of Otterbeins faculty, students and administration, we thank you for your support of Otterbeins athletics programs in 2008-2009 and for your continuing involvement in their successes.

Administration Dick Reynolds, who has established himself as one of the most successful basketball coaches in the 105year history of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), brings those winning traits to his additional position of Athletics Director. Reynolds, who took over the reigns of the mens athletics department in 1992, was also placed in charge of women’s athletics in 1998 after Otterbein combined both men’s and womens athletics into one depart ment. A ten-time OAC Coach of the Year selection and two-time Ohio College Coach of the Year, Reynolds has taken his cagers to at least a share of the regular-season conference title 11 times and into the NCAA Division 111 Tournament 13 times. The Cardinals advanced to the Final Four in 1981 and 1991 and won the national title in 2002. He became the all-time winningest basketball coach in the OAC, surpassing Wooster’s E. M. “Mose” Hole (1926-57) in 1994 and picked up his 600th career win in 2006. Reynolds has compiled a 618-359 record over 36 seasons at Otterbein. Following graduation from Otterbein in 1965, where he was a 12-time letterman in football, basketball and track, Reynolds returned to his home town of London, Ohio, and taught seventh-grade science while serving as an assistant coach in football, basketball and track at the high school. He served three years in the US. Air Force (1966-69) as a personnel services officer in charge of recreation. He spent three seasons as an assistant under Otterbein head mens basketball coach Curt Tong while teaching in the Columbus and Westerville, Ohio school districts from 1969 to 1972. He became head coach in 1972. Reynolds and his wife, Ellen, live in Westerville. They have two children, Amanda and Chad, and five grandchildren.

Head Coach Joe Loth begins his sixth sea son as head football coach at Otterbein College.

nator at NCAA Division III schools Western Connecticut State University (1993-97) and Capital University (1997-98). Loth spent two seasons as defensive secondary coach at the University of Rhode Island (1998-00) before accepting his first head coach

Loth, a 1991 Otterbein graduate, served as head football coach at Kean University, Union, N.J., for three seasons before coming to Otterbein in 2003.

ing job at Kean in February 2000. Loth was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at defensive back as an undergraduate at Otterbein. He earned second team All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors his senior year in 1990 and still holds the Otterbein career record of 13 interceptions. He received his bachelor’s degree in business.

The Painesville, Ohio, native has taken part in rebuilding pro grams throughout his 16-year coaching career. At Kean, Loth inherited a program riding a 16-game losing streak. In Loths final season, Kean posted its best record in eight years.

In 2006, Loth was inducted into his high school’s Hall of Fame at Riverside High School in Painesville, Ohio. Coach Loth and his wife, Keri, have two sons, Zachary, 8, and Tyler, 6.

In 2005, Loth guided the Cardinals to their first winning season since 1999 and only their second since 1982. The Cardinals fin ished the year at 7-3 overall, and 6-3 in the OAC. Included in the win column—a 17-14 decision over cross-town rival Capital— who made the NCAA Division III playoffs. Loth was selected “OAC Football Coach of the Year” by his peers. “To me, the award is a team accomplishment for the Otterbein football program,” Loth said after receiving the coach of the year award. “Our players, my assistant coaches and the support staff here at Otterbein are as responsible as myself in earning this award. At Otterbein, the 41-year-old coach has assembled a coaching staff that, including himself, features three former Cardinals. “If you look at the great NCAA Division III programs and the staffs they have, most of their coaches have gone through their program,” Loth said. “I think that’s important.” Loth and his staff have employed a four-step approach in raising the success of Otterbein football. “The first step is to recruit,” Loth said. “We want to recruit as well as anyone in the OAC. The second is retain our student-athletes. It is not always how many student-athletes you bring to campus, it is how many student-athletes you have retained. Thirdly, we look to develop our players mentally and physically, and create a great feeling of team. “Finally, Loth said, “we try to organize our program and prepare our players to ensure we accomplish our goals of recruiting, retaining and developing our players.” Loth began his football career as a graduate assistant at Southern Methodist University (1991-93). He served as defensive coordi

The Ohio Athletic Conference Commissioner: Timothy W. Gleason Information Dir.: Lindsay Rickel

The 2007-08 year proved, once again, why the OAC is one of the most prestigious Division III conferences in the country. The Mount Union football team advanced to their 11th Stagg Bowl, while Capital advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the third consecutive time. The Ohio North ern volleyball team team made its eighth straight NCAA III Tournament appearance and the program recorded its NCAA-record 31st straight winning season. The Heidelberg volleyball team reached the NCAA Regional Semifinals following an appearance in the OAC Tournament Finals. The Muskingum softball team advanced to the Division III World Series for the eighth time. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced the induction of Muskingum Head Coach Donna Newberry into the NFCA Hall of Fame in December 2008. Newberry is the alltime winningest softball coach in NCAA Division III. Heidelberg wrestling sent five to the NCAA Division III National Tournament and placed two. Ohio Northern Head Coach Ron Beaschler was inducted into the National Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The Otterbein womens golf team placed fifth at the NCAA Tourna ment, while the Mount Union men placed 12th. Individually, the Con ference was represented by 64 All-Americans and two national titles in track and field. Mount Unions Dan Gund won the outdoor shot put title and Heidelberg’s Judy Bataille claimed the indoor 55-meter dash title. Academically, the OAC boasted numerous CoSIDA ESPN the Maga zine Academic All-Americans, along with regional and national coach ing honors. sociation (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself and has survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently the Conference con sists of 10 members, including Baldwin-Wallace College, Capital Univer sity, Heidelberg College, John Carroll University, Marietta College, Mount Union College, Muskingum College, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein College and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school, on July 1, 2000. In the OACs first year of existence, 1902, the first Conference cham pion was crowned Case Tech won the football title with a 5-0-0 record. Outdoor track was added a year later and a third sport, cross country, became a Conference sport in 1914. More sports were steadily added to the OAC s repertoire throughout the years, culminating in the addition of women s sports in 1984. The Conference currentiy sponsors champi onships in 21 sports, 11 men's and 10 women's. The enrollments at the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century and have long and outstanding academic reputations. W^ile maintaining these high academic standards, Ohio Athletic Conference athletic teams and athletes have consistendy enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The atldetic competition IS viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the educational programs.
