In honor of Andy... The Otterbein Summer Theatre Company dedicates the work of the 2019 season to the memory of our beloved friend, and mentor, Andy Baker. Andy, a 2009 graduate of the Otterbein Universit)' Theatre Design/Technology program, was an integral part of Otterbein Summer Theatre since his time as a student. As a lighting designer, he shared his creative gifts with Andy Baker 1985-2019 us for almost a decade of summer seasons, including those that featured A Grand Night for Singing, My Fair Lady, and Altar Boyz. Be yond his incredible talent, Andy was a leader and mentor to many of our students, working hand in hand with them as they retraced his path through the Otterbein program. His teachers will always remember him for his humility and grace, for his can-do attitude, and his genuine concern for the people around him. A scholarship fund has been established in Andy’s name to benefit future stu dents who exhibit the leadership qualities best modeled by Andy himself. We have already coUected half of the required amount for the scholarship to be availabUe for future students. Please consider a tax-deductible contribution to honor Andy for generations to come We will be collecting donations at all performances of our Rare Sightings Reading Series, and donations can also be made via the Otterbein Summer Theatre box office or sent directly to: Otterbein University Institutional Advancement 1 S. Grove St. Westerville, OH 43081 , i x (Please note "Andy Baker Scholarship" in the memo line of your check.) Tfiankyou for joining us for the 2019 Otterbein Summer Theatre season!

THE CREATORS Abe Burrows (Author) After studying to be a doctor and an accountant, Abe Burrows had a career in sales before becoming a successful radio script writer and writer/ performer of musical parody numbers. His first Broadway libretto was Guys and Dolls, co-written with Jo Sw^erling, with a score by Frank Loesser. Among the musicals for w^hich he provided librettos are Make A Wish, Can-Can and Silk Stockings (both with scores by Cole Porter), Say, Darling, and How^ to Succeed in Business Without Really Tiying (w^hich he also directed; score by Frank Loesser). His non-musical plays include Cactus Flow^er (wrote and directed) and Forty Carats (directed). Jo Swerling (Author) Bom in Russia in 1897, Jo Sw^erling w^as a playwTight, screenwTiter and vaudeville sketch wTiter. Mr. Swerling's long career began as a reporter and feature WTiter in New^ York and Chicago. Frank Loesser (Composer & Lyricist), one of America's great composer/lyricists, began his songwTiting career during the Depression as a lyricist, contributing songs to Broadw^ay revues and nightclub acts. His work with composer Irving Actman in the 1936 revue The Illustrator's Show led to a songwTiting contract in Hollwood, w^here he spent the next eleven years w^orking with such composers as Burton Lane, Jule Styne, Arthur Schw^artz: and Hoagy Carmichael. Some of his film songs from that period include "Two Sleepy People," "Jingle Jangle Jingle" and "I Don't Want To Walk Without You." The first song for w^hich Loesser wTote both w^ords and music w^as "Praise The Lord And Pass The Ammunition," wTitten during his World War II service. His Hollyw^ood w^ork after the w^ar included the hit songs "Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year," "A Slow' Boat To China," and the 1949 Oscar-winning song "Baby, It's Cold Outside." In 1948 Loesser w'as approached by fledgling Broadw'ay producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin to write music and lyrics to George Abbott's libretto for an adaptation of the classic Brandon Thomas play Charley's Aimt. The new' musical, w'hich starred Ray Bolger, w'as called Where's Charley? and w^as a hit. This led to Loesser's next show', the hugely influential and successful Guys And Dolls in 1950, also produced by Feuer and Martin, with a script by Abe Burrow's and lo Sw'erling. In 1956 Loesser wTOte the libretto, music and lyrics for his next show', Tlie Most Haiyiy Fella, adapted from Sidney Howard's play. They Knew Wiat They Wanted. This impressive score contains over 30 musical numbers and makes extensive use of operatic techniques and forms, including recitative, arias, duets, trios and choral numbers. In 1960 he provided the score and was co-librettist for Greenwillow. In 1961, Loesser wrote the score for the Pulitzer Prize-winning How To Succeed In Business... Without Really Trying. His last show'. Pleasures And Palaces, closed in 1965 during out-of-towm try^-outs. For more information on Frank Loesser, please visit his official w'ebsite, WWW.FRANKLOESSER.COM
