ARTISTIC NOTE

2019 SEASON DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF ANDY BAKER

Join us for Otterbein Summer Theatre’s most ambitious, exciting, and far-reaching season yet. We are thrilled and honored to share with you three theatrical dazziers. They all abound in joy, wisdom, hilarity, drama, heart, and the power of great storytelling. A talented array of guest artists will join our dynamite ensemble of Otterbein students - working both onstage and behind the scenes - to bring you a first-rate season of professional theatre that will surely refresh the spirit, stimulate the mind, and gladden the soul.

The Otterbein Summer Theatre Company dedicates the work of this season to the memory of our colleague, friend, and mentor, Andy

We kick off the festivities with our first remounting of SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN, the rousing gospel and bluegrass phenomenon that has remained one of OST’s mok cherished productions since it was first staged in 2002. Our own beloved David Caldwell ’86 returns to once again helm the production.

Baker. Andy, a 2009 graduate of the Otterbein University Theatre Design/ Technology program, was an integral part of Otterbein Summer Theatre

We follow with “MASTER HAROLD”... AND THE BOYS, Athol Fugard’s acclaimed comingof-age play about friendship, injustice, and reconciliation. Exhilarating, spell-binding, and universally moving, this not-to-be-missed production will be directed by our very own and very gifted Melissa Lusher. We finish the season with GUYS AND DOLLS, one of the brightest stars in the musical theatre galaxy, featuring a sensational cast of 18 - the largest in OST recent history - in a staging that is at once intimate and lush. Add to all of this a staged reading series - including a children’s theatre production of FROG AND TOAD, a concert setting of Franz Lehar’s lilting operetta, THE MERRY WIDOW, and a presentation of a true masterpeice, WAITING FOR GODOT - and this is a season that truly offers something for everyone.

since his time as a student. As a lighting designer, he shared his creative gifts with us for almost a decade of summer seasons, which included “A Grand Night for Singing,” “My Fair Lady,” and “Altar Boyz.” Beyond his incredible talent, Andy was a leader and mentor to many of our students, working hand in hand with them as they retraced his path through the Otterbein program. His teachers will always remember him for his humility and grace, his can-do attitude, and his genuine concern for the people around him. With the help of a generous gift from Otterbein Theatre &

So join us for this landmark season - one that promises to overflow with gusto, grit, soul, melody, big ideas, and joy - that offers countless opportunities for celebration, contemplation, and renewal. We can’t wait to see you at the theatre!

Set in 1950s South Africa, this searing coming-of-age story is considered Fugard’s masterpiece. A white teen who has grown up in the affectionate company of the two black waiters who work in his mother’s tearoom in Port Elizabeth learns that his viciously racist, alcoholic father is on his way home from the hospital. His ensuing rage unwittingly triggers his inevitable passage into the culture of hatred fostered by apartheid

lump into a colorful world of underground gambling, showgirls, and high-stakes romance in one of America’s most enduring musical comedies. In mythical I950s New York City, career gambler Sky r Masterson makes the bet of a lifetime to win the heart of “Save-ASoul” missionary Sarah Brown while long-suffering nightclub star Adelaide laments foot-dragging beau Nathan Detroit’s 14-year failure to tie the knot. Big, brassy, and timeiessly exuberant, “Guys and Dolls” is rich with beloved show tunes (“Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ The Boat,” “If I Were A Bell,” “Luck Be A Lady”) and old-fashioned Broadway fun.
