DIRECTOR’S NOTE

The Heidi Chronicles by Wendy Wasserstein was the first play written by a woman to win a Tony and represented several other “firsts” in the theatre world.

As this show strives to tell the coming-of-age story of Heidi Holland, it also tells the evolution of U.S. feminism, its impact on society from the late 1960s to late 1980s, and the birth of second wave feminism. Our production has the opportunity to use the modern-day technology of theatrical projections which helps establish the world of the play. As the show progresses through the years our projections designer, Doc Davis, sought to bring in a visual art form of the time, the Joshua Light Show, to represent the subconscious of Heidi and her evolution through the story.

Hugely popular in the 1960s-1980s, the Joshua Light Show, or “liquid light show,” consisted of projected pure color light, concrete imagery, and colored oil and water dyes. The Joshua Light Show served as a lighting backdrop behind many live music performances including Janis Joplin, Grateful Dead, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, The Band, The Doors, Frank Zappa, Lou Reed, Television, Vanilla Fudge and Ravi Shankar among others.

Our production looks to focus on the struggles and achievements of women, not just in this time period but today as well. We look to tell the story of the women who set the foundation of the feminist movement in a truthful and vulnerable manner.

BIOGRAPHIES T.J. Gerckens (Chair/Producing Artistic Director, Lighting Advisor) is the lighting design faculty member at Otterbein University, a USA829 Union Lighting Designer, and proud Otterbein alumnus. At Otterbein, he has designed the lighting for Gentleman’s Guide, Into a Lamplit Room, Dance Concert 2020: The Wild Within (with John Diver), Chicago, Oklahoma!, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Diary of Anne Frank, Adding Machine: A Musical, Damn Yankees, Dance 2016: The Goddess, The Crucible, Fiddler on the Roof, Dance 2015: Famously Yours...Forever, Dance 2014: Tell-Tale Poe, and Into the Woods. As a freelance lighting designer, T.J. has been part of the design team for the Tony Award winner and MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Mary Zimmerman for the last 27 years. Most recently, he designed lighting for the new opera Eurydice, by Sarah Ruhl and Matthew Aucoin at the Metropolitan Opera and L.A. Opera, The Music Man at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, The world premiere of The Steadfast Tin Soldier at Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre, the recent revival of Metamorphoses at the Guthrie Theatre and Berkeley Rep, and Rusalka at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC. Other notable designs include The Odyssey at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Wonderful Town at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Guys & Dolls in L.A., and Treasure Island at the Lookingglass Theatre and Berkeley Rep. His lighting designs have been

seen at regional theatres across the United States, on and off Broadway, and at the Metropolitan Opera. Internationally, he has designed in England, Australia, and at the LaScala Opera House in Milan, Italy. He has received numerous awards for his designs including New York’s Drama Desk Award and Lortel Awards for his lighting of Metamorphoses on and off Broadway, Jefferson Awards for The Odyssey and Metamorphoses in Chicago, and an award for “Exemplifying the Art of Collaboration” given to the Zimmerman design team by Entertainment Design Magazine. You can see his designs for Lucia di Lammermoor and La Sonnambula on DVDs released by the Metropolitan Opera. T.J. holds a BFA from Otterbein University and an MFA from Boston University. He is married to set designer, scenic artist, and Otterbein adjunct instructor Stephanie R. Gerckens.

Eleni Papaleonardos (Director) is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre at Denison University, where she directs and teaches courses in acting, physical theatre, and devising. She apprenticed at Actors’ Theatre of Louisville, studied theatre at the Ohio State University, and was a member of the first M.F.A. company in Contemporary Performance at Naropa University, where she studied performance and devising techniques with prominent innovators including Barbara Dilley, Wendell Beavers, Meredith Monk and the House, SITI Company, and Tectonic Theatre Project. Eleni joined Columbus-based Available Light Theatre (AVLT) in 2008 and has served as Artistic Director since 2015. She has a passion for devising and developing original works, including creating her solo show about dyslexia Stop Sign [language] and originating the solo role in Erik Ehn’s Sealskin, at the Humana Festival of New American Plays at Actors’ Theatre of Louisville. In recent years, her directing has focused on immersive, site-specific, and interactive productions which break the constructs of traditional realist theatre including Everybody by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Information for Foreigners by Griselda Gambaro, and Paradise Park Zoo

by Savannah Reich. In the pandemic Eleni has focused on creating outdoor immersive and interactive performances as well as remote solo “audience as performer” experiences. A dual citizen of the USA and Greece, Eleni teaches across languages and cultures, exploring physicality and imagery that may not be as accessible when working only in English. Her teaching is devoted to and rooted in the experimental nature of the rehearsal room as laboratory and the value of failure. Eleni focuses on embodiment as a grounding principle in performance and places this work in the context of students’ future lives as artists and citizens. She seeks to create a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and consent-based classroom where she encourages students to work from where they are each day to unlearn the ideas of scarcity, competition, perfectionism, disconnection/ disembodiment, and product-focused practices.

She is grateful to TJ, the Department of Theatre & Dance, and the entire Heidi Chronicles team for their generosity and warm welcome.

Gabriela Ahumada Mier y Concha (Scenic Designer) is a junior BFA Theatre Design/Technology major with a minor in Art History. Previous Otterbein credits include Scenic Artist for The Pajama Game, Prop Master for A Lie of The Mind, and Set Dresser for Into a Lamplit Room. Gabi would like to thank the production team, her friends and family for supporting her every step of the way. She would also like to give a special thanks to her dad, who mistakenly considered himself a “failed artist,” for being her greatest source of inspiration.

Morgan Joyner (Costume Designer) is a junior Theatre Design/Technology major from Dallas, TX. Previous Otterbein credits include A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder (Assistant Designer), The Tempest (Draper), and Into A Lamplit Room (Wardrobe Master). This is Morgan’s first role as a designer. She would like to thank Rebecca White and Anna Grywalski for their guidance and mentorship. She would also like to thank Tiffany Stone and her family for the support.

Jacob Gooch (Lighting Designer) is a third-year Student in the Design and Technology program from Wooster, OH. Previous notable Otterbein credits include Lead Electrician for A Lie of the Mind (2021) and A1 for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder (2021). Outside of Otterbein, Jacob holds various professional and academic positions such as: Video Lead at the Lincoln Theatre (Columbus, OH) and Technical Director at Westerville Central High School (Westerville, OH), to name a few. Jacob would like to extend his heartfelt thanks to all those who have made his theatre career possible, especially his family and teachers.

Kailey Miller (Sound Designer) is a recent graduate of Otterbein and a local freelance sound designer and engineer. To date, credits include co-designing Into A Lamplit Room (Otterbein 2021) and acting as A1 for various university events. She is grateful to see live theatre starting to be able to come back in earnest.

Doc Davis (Projection Designer) was born and raised in Pearl, MS. After receiving a BA in Theatre from Belhaven University, he continued his education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While completing his MFA in Sound Design, he worked as a sound engineer at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, assisting such acts as Mark Morris Dance Company, The National, Derek Trucks Band, Keb’ Mo’, Ralph Lemon Dance Company, and more. After receiving his MFA, he acted as a Mastering Engineer, Sound Designer, A1, Location Recordist, Video Designer, and Re-Recording Mixer for various theaters, companies, and films. Since moving to Columbus, OH, Davis continues to design shows many times a year and especially loves sharing his approach to Audio Engineering and Sound Design with students of all ages!

Anna Walker (Stage Manager) is a senior BA Theatre major from Barrington, IL. Previous Otterbein credits include The Tempest (Stage Manager), A Lie of the Mind (Assistant Stage Manager), and An Enemy of the People (Assistant Stage Manager), as well as Michelle Silva’s upcoming Advanced Directing Project of Sunday on the Rocks (Stage Manager). Anna is honored to have worked on The Heidi Chronicles, and she plans to continue working in stage management upon graduation. As this is her last mainstage production at Otterbein, Anna would like to thank her friends and peers as well as the department faculty for an incredible four years. She would like to especially thank Eleni Papaleonardos and Brian Sekinger for their incredible guidance and trust in her, as well as Izzie, Libby, and Aaron for their hard work and support. Finally, Anna dedicates her work on The Heidi Chronicles to her favorite members of the Baby Boom Generation, Mitch and Sarah.

Melinda Murphy (Voice and Movement Coach) teaches Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais Method® in the Otterbein Theatre and Dance Department, with application to movement, voice, characterization, singing, and dance. Melinda is one of the few teachers trained in both methods; she combines them in her private practice in Columbus, and in classes and seminars for performing artists at other Ohio colleges. Since coming to Otterbein, she also trained to teach Fitzmaurice Voice work for its specialized tools for improving the voice and breath. Melinda has coached Otterbein productions since the turn of the century. She has also coached equestrians, figure skaters, musicians, and competitive barbershop quartets and choruses including the two-time international gold medalist Southern Gateway Chorus.

Dr. Aviva Neff (Intimacy Coach) is a rustbelt artist-scholar-educator with an expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion in the arts. Dr. Neff is an experienced director who enjoys working in devised theatre and theatre for social change. She is an ensemble member with Teatro Travieso, with whom she recently premiered her solo performance, Blood, Earth, Water. Dr. Neff is the Director of Youth and Community Learning at Columbus College of Art and Design and an adjunct faculty member with Otterbein University Department of Theatre and Dance.

Brian Sekinger (Production Manager) joins the Otterbein team this year with experience as an AEA Stage Manager, Line Producer, Consultant, and Educator in the performing arts industry.

Brian has a BA in Educational Theatre & English from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and an MFA in Production Technology & Management with a concentration in Stage Management from Carnegie Mellon University. Most recently, he was the Resident Production Stage Manager at Northern Stage and the Production Stage Manager at the New London Barn Playhouse.

His passion for new musical development and working with early career Stage Managers has had him jet setting around the country with companies including the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center Education, Davenport Theatricals, DreamWorks Theatricals, RKO Stage, Musical Theatre Factory, Prospect Theatre, Playwrights Realm, Folger Shakespeare, and many others.

Patrick Stone (Faculty Technical Director) began his tenure as the Technical Director at Otterbein in the fall of 2014. He spent the previous seven years at the University of Arkansas as the Technical Director. He holds an MFA from the University of South Dakota and a Bachelors of Arts from Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. He teaches classes in stagecraft, properties, metal working, technical direction, wood working, and motion scenery. Patrick also enjoys consulting with local and regional theatres ranging from professional through junior high school. Patrick has just returned from a semester long sabbatical wherein he completed the prestigious Entertainment Technician Certification Program in Theatrical Rigging. He’s glad to be back because, “Giving tough exams is WAY less stressful than taking them.”

Emma Bailey (Becky/Clara/Denise, Heidi u/s) is a freshman BFA Acting major from Jacksonville, FL. Previous Otterbein credits include Eggs (Girl 1). She feels deep gratitude for the cast, crew, Eleni, and Aviva. Thanks to Mom, Dad, Caroline, and Reilly for making her a better woman.

Kandy Boakye (Fran/Molly/Betsy/April) is a sophomore BFA Acting major from Westerville, OH. Kandy is so excited to be able to do theatre at this time. She would like to thank Eleni and the cast and crew for creating such a positive work environment.

Zoya Bokhari (Wardrobe Lead) is a senior double major in Theatre and Business Administration/Management with minors in Arts Administration and Marketing from Dallas, TX. Previous Otterbein credits include Radium Girls (Lead Electrician), The Tempest (Assistant Stage Manager) and Dance 2018: Gloriously Grimm (Board Op). Zoya plans to graduate in December and attend graduate school overseas. She would like to thank her friends and family for their constant love, and would like to specially thank her class for growing with her these last 4 years. It’s been a wild ride.

Libby Carroll (Assistant Stage manager) is a freshman Design/Technology major from Pittsburgh, PA. Libby would like to thank her family for always being supportive. She would also like to thank Anna and Izzie for being so welcoming and wonderful to work with!

Luca Fragiotta (Assistant Technical Director) is a sophomore BFA Design/Technology major and Film minor from Lewis Center, OH. Previous Otterbein credits include Stage Manager for The Devising Project: Land of Ours, Assistant Stage Manager for The Pajama Game, and Carpenter for A Lie of the Mind. Luca thanks Sophie for her incredible guidance on this project, and his family for supporting him throughout his journey!

Daniel Keeling (Scoop) is a junior BFA Acting major from Naperville, IL. Previous Otterbein credits include, A Lie of the Mind (Mike), The Tempest (Boatswain), and The School for Scandal (2nd Gentleman, u/s Careless). Brittany Koscinski (Heidi) is a junior BFA Musical Theatre major and Dance minor from Orlando, FL. Previous Otterbein credits include The Pajama Game (Mabel), Into a Lamplit Room (Female Swing), and the Advanced Directing Project Art (Marc). Brittany would like to thank the entire cast and crew for creating a wonderful space to play and create an amazing piece of theatre. She would also like to send love to her family and friends for always supporting her.

Kate Larson (Properties Lead) is a sophomore Design/Technology major from Cambridge, MN. Previous Otterbein credits include A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder (Wardrobe Lead), and The Pajama Game (Draper). Kate wants to thank her lovely friends for being so wonderful and kind.

Isabelle Lindsey (Assistant Stage Manager) is a junior double majoring in BA Theatre and BA in Music from Gahanna, OH. Previous Otterbein credits include A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder (Assistant Stage Manager) and Into a Lamplit Room (Props Lead).

Luke Maynus (Male Understudy) is a sophomore BA Theatre and Political Science double major from Charleston, WV. Previous Otterbein credits include The Bald Soprano (Mr. Smith) and Hand to God (Jason/Tyrone). Luke would like to thank Eleni Papaleonardos for her wonderful direction, and for complimenting his plaid pants that one time. He didn’t know if they matched his outfit or not, but if Eleni likes them, you know they’re good; ‘ya know?

Aaron Mendoza (Assistant Director & Assistant Sound Designer) is a sophomore BFA Design/ Technology major and Film minor from Commerce City, CO. Previous Otterbein credits include Assistant Stage Manager for A Lie of the Mind and Production Assistant for Into a Lamplit Room.

Aaron has loved working on this amazing show, with all of the wonderful people that have made it possible. He is overjoyed that this production was his first assistant director experience, as he has learned so much and gained confidence in his directing abilities.

Victoria Mesa (Susan Johnston) is a junior BFA Musical Theatre major from Miami, FL. Previous Otterbein credits include The Pajama Game (Gladys Hotchkiss), Into a Lamplit Room (Company), and Dance 2020: The Wild Within (Sage). Victoria would like to thank her cast, company, roommates, family, and Eleni for consistently reigniting the twinkle in her eye. A special thank you to Hannah Schmidt who makes her a better human/cook--besos and breadsticks to all!

Sophie Rodriguez (Technical Director) is a senior BFA Design/Technology major from Houston, TX. Previous credits include Otterbein’s The Pajama Game (Assistant Technical Director), Into a Lamplit Room (Assistant Technical Director) and The Tempest (Assistant Technical Director).

Sophie was recently the Scenic Apprentice with Theatre Aspen for their productions of Chicago and Rock of Ages. Sophie would like to thank her family and professors for supporting her throughout the past several years during her time at Otterbein!

Beth Sanford (Jill/Debbie/Lisa) is a junior BFA Acting major with a minor in Criminology and Justice Studies from San Francisco, CA. Previous Otterbein Credits include The Tempest (Miranda), End Game (Hamm) and An Enemy of the People (Ensemble). Beth would like to thank her amazing friends for being her support system. She is so thankful for the opportunity to create theatre always, especially with such an incredible cast.

Ben Sanford (Chris/Mark/Steve/Ray) is a freshman BFA Acting major and Philosophy minor from Minneapolis, MN. Previous credits include Blue Water Theatre Company’s Into the Woods (The Baker), and Brighton Beach Memoirs (Stanley Jerome); and St. Louis Park High School’s Legally Blonde (Emmett Forrest). Ben would like to thank his friends and family for the immense love and support they have given him throughout the years. Quincy Shaindlin (Peter) is a sophomore BFA Acting major and Creative Writing minor from San Mateo, CA. Previous credits include Otterbein’s The Pajama Game (Myron Hassler) and Death of a Salesman (Biff Lohman); and Los Altos Stage Company’s Admissions (Charlie Mason).

Quincy is also a proud co-founder of The Refuge (a theater company based in San Francisco).

In the future, he plans on making movies and eating a lot of Chipotle!

Claire Stancy (Female Understudy) is a freshman BFA Acting major and Dance minor from Chesapeake, VA. Previous credits include The Washington Ballet’s The Nutcracker (Snow and Flowers corps de ballet) and Swan Lake (Swan corps de ballet). She would like to thank her family, professors, and classmates for making her first year at Otterbein so memorable.

Gabe Whitnack (Lead Electrician) is a sophomore BFA Design/Technology major and Film Studies minor from Durham, NC. Previous Otterbein credits include The Pajama Game (Assistant Lead Electrician) and Launch 2021 (Lighting Designer). Gabe would like to thank Josie Rocca for being a great assistant lead electrician and Kelly Ganley for teaching him an exuberant amount about multimeters.

Wendy Wasserstein’s play The Heidi Chronicles won the 1989 Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, and Susan Smith Blackburn Prize; the New York Drama Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards; and earned her a grant from the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays. For The Sisters Rosensweig she received the 1993 Outer Critics Circle Award, a Tony Award nomination, and the William Inge Award for Distinguished Achievement in American Theatre. Other plays include Old Money and An American Daughter and Third (Lincoln Center); Uncommon Women and Others (Phoenix Theater); Isn’t It Romantic (Playwrights Horizons); a musical, Miami (with Jack Feldman and Bruce Sussman); Waiting For Philip Glass, included in Love’s Fire (The Acting Company). Wasserstein’s screenplays include The Object of My Affection, produced as a major motion picture starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd. For PBS Great Performances she wrote Kiss, Kiss Darling; Drive, She Said; and adaptations of John Cheever’s The Sorrows of Gin and her own Uncommon Women and Others. She adapted The Heidi Chronicles for TNT (1996 Emmy Award nomination for Best Television Movie) and An American Daughter for Lifetime Television. Her adaptation of The Nutcracker was performed at The American Ballet Theatre at The Met, and her adaptation of The Merry Widow premiered at San Francisco Opera. She was the librettist for the original opera Festival of Regrets: Central Park, which had runs at Glimmerglass Opera and New York City Opera. She wrote Pamela’s First Musical, a children’s book, which adapted with Cy Coleman into a musical which premiered in Spring 2006. Her other books include the essay collections “Shiksa Goddess” and “Bachelor Girls.”

She contributed to “The New Yorker,” “The New York Times,” “New York Woman,” and “Harper’s Bazaar,” among many other publications. She was the recipient of an NEA Grant, Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. She served on the Council of the Dramatists Guild, on the Board of the British American Arts Association, School of American Ballet, WNET/Thirteen, and The Educational Foundation of America.

She taught at Columbia University, New York University, Juilliard School, and Princeton University, and held an Honorary Doctorate from Mount Holyoke College. Wasserstein was born in Brooklyn and raised in Manhattan. She was a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and the Yale School of Drama.

SOUND DESIGNER NOTE During intermission, you will hear excerpts from speeches, interviews, and panels given by (in order of appearance) Gloria Steinem, Shirley Chisholm, and Angela Davis. These women, especially Chisholm and Davis, not only pushed for the barriers to women’s rights to be removed, but also stressed that even within the women’s rights movement there are additional and/or worse barriers for those women who belong to additional minority groups (such as those of race and sexual or romantic attraction).

We wished to highlight these points they made, and we invite the audience to explore more of their content after leaving the theatre tonight. A wonderful place to start is by listening to the 1972 panel “Do Women Dare?,” of which an excerpt shall be played tonight and which is available to listen to for free online via The New School’s Archives and Special Collections.
