Final Review

TARKOVKY’s STALKER “The oldest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” - H.P. Lovecraft The 1979 film ‘Stalker’ depicts a journey into the unknown. It follows a Writer, Professor and their guide, or Stalker, on a trek through the mysterious ‘Zone’ of the Russian countryside. The movie lends many themes from the book it is based on, ‘The Roadside Picnic’. References to a Zone filled with anomalies from beyond the stars are present in both. In the film, the protagonists are searching for The Room, which is said to contain little understood, perhaps even alien technology that can grand anyone their deepest desire.

THE SCENE : THE ANTERROOM The Anteroom scene takes place at the climax of the film, when the three protagonists sit defeatedly on the threshold of The Room, deciding it is too great a thing to destroy, and too evil a thing to ever use.

REPRESENTING THE SCENE Our first approach was literal taking inspiration from our scene and directly referencing it in shape and plan as shown in the film. By the second week after our tutors review we started to alter scale and space to create more symbolic and ATMOSPHERIC scenes for our room we also started to build our frame work at this point, the main material being MDF joined by L-brackets. By the third week we began work on details and filming, during which we took advice from the tutors and began to abstract our scenes and maquette so it is open to interpretation, inspired by our scene in stalker but not a copy.
