festival oudemuziek utrecht
30 candles The Festival Oude Muziek celebrates its birthday with the most beautiful and at the same time most obvious treat we could think of: a sparkling Festival brimming with music from before the earliest Middle Ages to the late Baroque. It all centres on Rome, the city that is the foundation for our culture in so many ways. We still build on its Antique legacy, we can still feel the effects of its eventful history, from which we only have to cite examples as the Renaissance, humanism and the Papacy as a new power on the international stage and the Counterreformation as emblems. The musical developments that accompanied all this movement is still largely hidden under the surface. As the world’s biggest early music festival, Utrecht wants to be an advocate for this unknown repertoire, or for music that we only think we know. Palestrina is one of those key composers in dire need of rehabilitation. But also in the cases of Du Fay, Frescobaldi and Corelli there’s still plenty to discover. Roma – città eterna promises some unforgettable moments, but you won’t risk the black hole afterwards. From October on, we continue.. during our concert season 11-12. Welcome to Utrecht, and enjoy!

Giuseppe Maletto, tenor Artist in residence Giuseppe Maletto was part of the wave of Italians washing over early music in the 90s, revitalizing so much music. They brought their southern temperaments, but also a more expressive approach than that of the reigning northerners, thanks to their direct contact with Italian poetry and all its nuances. Maletto contributed primarily as a singer, first with Concerto Italiano, La Venexiana and other ensembles. At the same time he developed into a researcher and an artistic leader. His Cantica Symphonia are at the forefront of performing Du Fay, while he explores secular repertoires with his Compagnia del Madrigale. But still: Maletto will never be just a conductor, because he is a singer at heart. Exceptional as this seems, it is exactly how it should be. A sign of his modesty, but also of his incredible knowhow.

Diego Fasolis, conductor Artist in residence Conductor Diego Fasolis combines exceptional technique and unsurpassed knowledge of the repertoire with a huge list of accomplishments. Voices are his passion, whether he accompanies them at the harpsichord, if he works with them to put together an exquisite madrigal or if he invites them for a project with his own I Barocchisti. His efforts have been rewarded with numerous prizes for his recordings. Fasolis owes his prominent place in Utrecht mostly to the energy he devotes to Palestrina. He spends hours unlocking the hundreds of masses and madrigals that appear step by step with Edizione Nazionale, like working on a cathedral that he may not see completed himself, a tribute to a composer who is in serious need of defenders like Fasolis. The Festival could not wish for a better guest.

Veronika Skuplik, violinist Artist in residence Violinist Veronika Skuplik might just have been born in the wrong era. The 17th century is clearly her home, a period of elegant flair and sharp contrasts. Suavità combined with an almost unpolished musical power. Where many violinists take the fact of leading as their core principle, Skuplik operates from curiosity. Of course she still plays first violin this Festival, for instance with Concerto Palatino, L’Arpeggiata and her own La Dolcezza, but she takes on that role discreetly, as a prima inter pares. Her almost vocal playing lends a special patina to the Corelli sonatas she will perform in Utrecht. After peeling off all layers or out-ofplace ornamentation, she recalls the early days of the virtuoso, full of poetry and poise. The fact that she built the most creative programme around these pieces, with vistas of Germany and England, is more proof that we’re dealing with a truly Baroque spirit.

Italian harpsichord, anon. ca. 1670 Instrument in residence Italian harpsichords come in various sizes and forms, but their typical light build and limited proportions guarantee a very recognizable sound. This anonymous Neapolitan instrument was built around 1620/40. It is a rare privilige to have this musical treasure available for almost the entire Festival Oude Muziek, and to hear it being played by international top players like Pierre HantaĂŻ, Laurent Stewart and Francesco Corti. With special thanks to Historisch Centrum Het Markiezenhof, Bergen op Zoom
Carlo Russo organ, 1713 Instrument in residence The Roman organ literature from the 16th and 17th centuries is exceptionally rich, even though it is hardly played – or well understood. During this Roman Festival, we would like to change that, but that would only be possible with a suitable Italian instrument tuned in meantone. This small jewel, built in 1713 by Carlo Russo, with just 6 registers, will be installed in the Nicolaïkerk, where it will shine all day on 1 September. With special thanks to Robert Kohnen

New: Carillon Festival Oude Muziek From the start, the Dom carillon has played a major role in the Festival Oude Muziek: following the ringing of all the bells, there would always be a concert to open the Festival, and more concerts would appear during the 10 days, always with arrangements of music related to the Festival’s themes. This year, we take the next, logical step: the carillon will be the subject of its own Festival Oude Muziek. With carillon concerts by established and starting carillonneurs, a debate about the future of the carillon, visits to the playing chamber high up in the tower and a special tour of the bells for children. There is another circumstance that coincides with the Festival’s 30th birthday: city carillonneur Arie Abbenes will say his current post farewell. To mark this transition, he will play a festive programme with recorder player Saskia Coolen before formally saying goodbye on the Dom Square. The new Carillon Festival thus becomes a present from the Festival Oude Muziek for its parting carillonneur, who in turn can present it to the city and the many early music lovers who visit. Naturally, the 1664 Dom carillon built by the brothers Pieter and François Hemony features prominently. But also a second Hemony instrument, the lighter carillon of the Nicolaïkerk, will sound in the new Festival.

Madeleine Pfundt & Sara van Dijk Summer school / The road to Rome
The ‘distance’ between Utrecht and Rome isn’t that big. Many native artists hazarded across the Alps to witness the experiments of the Renaissance up close. Musicologist Madeleine Pfund and art historian Sara van Dijk discuss the relation between music and the visual arts of the era. After the duo lecture, you can visit the exhibition Utrechters dreaming of Rome for free. (see also p.77)

No student of the piano can escape Muzio Clementi: this clever pedagogue flooded the market eagerly with easy to play sonatines. But his total oeuvre is much more varied and interesting, worthy of rehabilitation. Antonio Piricone and Megumi Tanno, together the fortepiano duo Tempo Rubato, won the Van Wassenaer Concours in 2009 with a dazzling performance.

Du Fay: Motets
Cantica Symphonia won general acclaim for their complete recording of Du Fay’s motets. Giuseppe Maletto based his interpretation on his own in-depth research, not hesitating to include instruments for extra effect. Often, Du Fay would mark key moments in 15th-century Italy with his music, as was the case with ‘Nuper rosarum flores’ to commemorate the consecration of Florence’s Duomo. Today, Utrecht can enjoy the result.

Mister Zwoei, a musical children’s show
Brisk with Hans Thissen, actor, Marc Krone, director, Freija Wouters, design and costumes Mister Zwoei lives in a workshop full of flutes. Then four dolls are delivered, that might come alive through music. But they’re not playing what mister Zwoei wants.. maybe the audience can help? The musicians play 25 different flutes. The daily things gain musical meaning, and funny things happen on stage and in the music.

Victoria: Vesper psalms, antiphons, motets This quartet of soloists, including soprano Raquel Andueza, has been winning audiences for southerns repertoires for decades. Spanish composer Victoria, one of the most important foreigners in Rome and the successor to Palestrina at the Seminario Romano, is of course far from unknown. But the same cannot be said for the striking vesper psalms on this programme, that have only recently been rediscovered.

Palestrina: Missa Assumpta est Maria en Mariaantifonen; Allegri: Miserere; Anerio: Magnificat etc The Sixteen enjoys a worldwide reputation as one of the finest performers of Renaissance polyphony. This concert exclusively features music written for the Sistine Chapel, like Palestrina’s Missa Assumpta est Maria and antiphons by various Roman composers. An all-time favorite is Allegri’s Miserere with its soaring soprano part.

sat 27 aug 22.30 hrs Pieterskerk concert no. 13
Monica Piccinini incarnates Adriana Basile, Monteverdi’s muse, who sang the best known madrigals of her time in the Roman palazzo of Cardinal Montalto. Among the pieces that have reached our time is Monteverdi’s famous Lamento di Arianna.
Cantica Symphonia / Giuseppe Maletto Du Fay: Missa Ecce ancilla Domini; Mouton, Des Prez, Festa: Motets
This second, more intimate programme of Cantica Symphonia, sung by just 4 musicians, Du Fay’s Missa Ecce ancilla Domini is the key work. Giuseppe Maletto supplements the mass movements with music to the Virgin Mary by famous contemporaries like Josquin des Prez and Mouton.

An end for the carillon?
Panel discussion with Leo Samama To highlight the new Carillon Festival, carilloneurs Arie Abbenes, Bernard Winsemius and Geert D’hollander and Bob van Wely discuss the future of their instrument. The discussion will be led by musicologist Leo Samama.
Rinaldo Alessandrini, harpsichord
Frescobaldi, Pasquini: Partitas and toccatas Rinaldo Alessandrini is the leader of the famed Concerto Italiano, but he keeps equally busy as a harpsichord player. Today he kicks off a series of concerts around the oeuvre of Frescobaldi. His works are contrasted with those of the unknown Bernardo Pasquini, the missing link between Frescobaldi’s keyboard style and the high Baroque.

Daedalus / Roberto Festa
Musa Latina: De Rore, le Jeune, Tritonius et al. At the dawn of the 16th century, the humanist movement found fresh inspiration in the poetry of Horace, Virgil and Ovid. Composers created a new ‘antique’ way of declamations that would turn vocal music in a completely new direct. Ensemble Daedalus is a specialist of the Italian Renaissance repertoire and show how Antiquity got reinvented in Rome.

Just like Palestrina supplied the Christian church with polyphony, Salomone Rossi provided the Italian synagogues with a repertoire of their own.

Guido Magnano teaches mathematics at Turin university, but he is also the organ player in Cantica Symphonia. With live examples from Du Fay’s Missa Se la face ay pale he explains the crucial role of numbers on the structures in the composers’s music.
Laurent Stewart, harpsichord Frescobaldi, Froberger
Through Froberger, probably the best-known of Frescobaldi’s students, this particular style made its way to Germany and France, where it found an enthusiastic audience. Laurent Stewart juxtaposes both masters with a robust sense of poetry that makes him the exceptional keyboard player he is.

La Dolcezza, the group around the German violinist Veronika Skuplik, will give ravishing interpretations of a selection from opus 1. Pairing Corelli with trio sonatas by famous contemporaries Rosenmüller and Purcell, his music is heard in a surprising context.

Concerto Italiano, at the international top for over 20 years, sings 17th- and 18th-century music that is seldom performed. Bis surprises from this Roman repertoire are Fabri’s 9-part Confitebor and Melani’s 9-part Litanie per la Beata Vergine. As a cherry on this delicious pie, they will perform Scarlatti’s famous 10-part Stabat Mater.
La Fenice / Jean Tubéry
Kapsberger, Stradella, Pasquini et al.: Canzonas, sinfonias, sonatas, toccatas La Fenice, lead by cornettist Jean Tubéry, explores the popular early Baroques repertoires of the Roman courts. Kapsberger was part of the entourage of Cardinal Barberini, Stradella was a favorite of ex-Queen Christina of Sweden, while Pasquini operated under the protection of Prince Giambattista Borghese.

Schola Gregoriana Pragensis / David Eben Music from early Gregorian traditions
At the end of the 10th century, Adalbertus, bishop of Prague, fled to Rome because he was unable to manage his boisterous flock. The Pope sent him back immediately, a group Benedictine monks following in his wake, to found a monastery in Bohemia. Their chants became the way to christianity.

Graindelavoix / Björn Schmelzer
Palestrina: Missa Papae Marcelli, motets Graindelavoix’ unconventional approach to Palestrina’s impressive Missa Papae Marcelli starts from the great variety of virtuosic vocal styles and traditions present in Rome. Björn Schmelzeen insiders the piece as a laboratory where he searches for a balance between artificial and natural pathos and where equilibrium, structure and ornament find each other in a polyphonic fabric.

Bertrand Cuiller, harpsichord
Frescobaldi, M. Rossi, Ferrini, Cifra, Gaffi, Pasquini Frescobaldi has put many of his contemporaries in the shadow because of his notoriety. Even so, many of them contributed greatly to the flourishing of the Roman keyboard repertoire. Bertrand Cuiller, who may be one of the most convinving harpsichordists active in France today, freshens up our image of the 17th-century keyboard literature.

Summer school plus / Rome as a layered space Music is sound in space, as simple as it gets. But is that the truth? Musician and thinker Björn Schmelzer has for years been fascinated by the notion of locus (place) and opens the discussion in this extended summer school, talking with specialists like architecture historian Deborah Howard. The topic is Rome as a multi-faceted space, the importance and dynamics of space, sound and psycho-acoustics…
Jean-Marc Aymes, harpsichord
De Macque, Luzzaschi, Pasquini, Frescobaldi, Froberger et al. Jean-Marc Aymes recently completed his recording of Frescobaldi’s keyboard oeuvre. This makes him the ideal guide in our voyage of discovery through this delicate and largely unknown repertoire. Genius Frescobaldi appears between De Macque and Froberger, reconciliating pure polyphony with new and expressive instrumental liberties.

I Barocchisti & Coro della Radio televisione svizzera / Diego Fasolis Caldara: Polychoral sacred music
Caldara succeeded Handel as the maestro di cappella at the Roman Ruspoli residence. The manuscript at the heart of this programme is from that period. Diego Fasolis selected some polychoral psalms for choir and orchestra and takes a spacial approach: the musicians are placed at 4 different locations in the church, creating magnificent dialogues between choirs and soloists.
Cappella Mediterranea / Leonardo García Alarcón with Mariana Flores, soprano & Fernando Guimarães, tenor Monteverdi, Mazzocchi, Strozzi, L. Rossi et al.: Madrigals Argentinian harpsichord player Leonardo García Alarcón evokes a warm Roman summer evening with his young group Cappella Mediterranea. Soloists Mariana Flores and Fernando Guimarães sing madrigals from Rome and Venice.
Pierre Hantaï, harpsichord
Frescobaldi, Byrd, Bull, Farnaby, Gibbons et al.: Capriccios, fantasias, toccatas French harpsichord player Pierre Hantaï is known for his personal approach to music. In this concert he looks at parallels between Frescobaldi’s exquiste keyboard works and those of the English virginalists. During his only travel abroad, the Italian encountered British music in Brussels. The question is: who inspired whom?

Alma van der Berg
Summer School / Madrigal poetry The tales of Ariosto and Tasso are central to the Italian literature, and thus a major source of inspiration for the madrigal composers. Musicologist Alma van der Berg finished her PhD research into this emotional poetry in 2010 and knows music and text like no other.
Francesco Corti, harpsichord
Palestrina, M. Rossi, Trabaci, Gesualdo, Frescobaldi et al.: Ricercares, toccatas, canzonas Young Italian harpsichord player Francesco Corti, who followed part of his eduction in the Netherlands, clarifies the way in which the Roman keyboard music evolved in the 16th and early 17th centuries. From the pure polyphony of Palestrina, Gesualdo and Trabaci developed individualism, leading to Rossi and Frescobaldi who blazed a trail for the Baroque.

Corelli devoted his final printed opus to the brand new concerto grosso: a group of soloists called concertino enters a musical duel with the strings of the ripieno. The idea was attractive to other big composers like Handel and Muffat. Baroque orchestra Concerto Copenhagen invited Swedish soprano Maria Keohane to complement the programme with arias from Handel’s early, Roman period.

La Sfera Armoniosa took its name from the collection of songs published by Quagliati in 1623 to celebrate the marriage of a cousin of Gregory XV with a niece of Gesualdo. The pieces, mostly in a modern concertato style for one or two sopranos and violin, will be performed with a rich continuo section.

At the same time, she was a woman of remarkable artistic and intellectual power. Stradella, Pandolfi Mealli, Lonati, Biber: Sinfonias and solo sonatas Until the end of the 17th century, string composers Stradella and Lonati were the big names in papal Romes. Meanwhile, in imperial Vienna, Pandolfi Mealli and Biber led the pack – until Corelli sprinted ahead of them all with his revolutionary innovations. Violinist Gunar Letzbor is a specialist of the Austrian Baroque repertoire and explored some new sources.

The Corsinis, a rich bankers’ family, led an opulent life in Rome. To celebrate the marriage between the heir Bartolomeo and Maria Vittoria Altoviti, they pulled out all stops. Scarlatti’s Flora pellegrina was performed at the garden party and went on to become an international success. B’Rock invited soloists Sabine Devieilhe, last year’s star in arias by Rameau, and equally bright-futured Antonio Giovannini.

The foundation under Palestrina’s 6-part Missa Ut-re-mi-fa-sol-la is breathtakingly simple. Still, he manages to manipulate this range of 6 tones into a true masterpiece, one of the best works in his oeuvre. The Huelgas Ensemble, celebrating its 40 years, chose some accompanying motets by Palestrina’s excellent Roman colleagues.

Hopkinson Smith has been an indefatigable advocate for his instrument since the 70s. Brunch con maestro Van Nevel Interview: Thea Derks
The Huelgas Ensemble celebrates its 40 years, which is a great opportunity to invite artistic leader Paul Van Nevel to the Festival’s traditional Sunday brunch. Van Nevel has a colourful reputation: our premier specialist of polyphony and an ardent lover of the cigar brought out a CD titled The Art of the Cigar for this anniversary. Thea Derks will interview him about this and more of passions.
Farewell to Arie Abbenes city carillonneur of Utrecht
He is Utrecht’s best known and at the same time most anonymous musician: after 25 years of service, Arie Abbenes is about to retire. All this time, he has put his heart into the Festival Oude Muziek, so of course he is there when we create a new carillon festival. At 13h, Arie will play his farewell concert with recorder player Saskia Coolen, after which the audience can say goodbye in person on the Domplein.

The Rare Fruits Council / Manfredo Kraemer Corelli, Stradella, Scarlatti, Geminiani, Muffat: Concerti grossi and sinfonias
This programme illustrates through the works of Corelli’s Roman colleagues and students how influential the creater of the concerto grosso was. Geminiani even arranged Corelli’s solo sonatas to fit the new genre, with the La Follia variations as the undisputed highpoint. The Rare Fruits Council with star violinist Manfredo Kraemer is strong as always in this repertoire.

cantoLX / Frank Agsteribbe
Frescobaldi: Arie Musicali; Cage: Aria & Song Books The non-conformist musicians of cantoLX set up a refreshing musical battle between two radically different styles of singing. Even though the esthetics and sound world of 17th-century Frescobaldi and the 20th-century Cage are miles apart, both went on a solitary search for new ways of expression, resulting in surprising and sometimes shocking vocal feats.
Cantar Lontano / Marco Mencoboni
Danckerts: Missa de Beata Virgine, motets Danckerts, composer from Zealand, entered the papal chapel in 1538. Recently, a yet unknown manuscript was discovered, from which Cantar Lontano assembled a programme around the virgin Mary. In 2007 Marco Mencoboni led an extraordinary vespers reconstruction, and he will now once again play with the acoustic possibilities of the Domkerk.
L’Arpeggiata / Christina Pluhar Monteverdi: Mariavespers
Audience favorite L’Arpeggiata, led by lutenist Christina Pluhar, ensures a magistral final concert. Monteverdi’s Vespro were once written as a job application to the Pope. In vain, because Paul V made history by denying the most important innovator of the 17th century.

Free fringe concerts Outside of the official programme, the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht offers numerous free fringe concerts every day, performed by young musicians, some still in their studies, some starting out their career in early music. These concerts are a welcome addition to the already charged Festival schedule and may be a step towards a concert in the official programme of Festival or Season. The concerts take place in historic venues all over the historic centre and last generally 45 minutes. Due to the often very small venues, for some venues free tickets must be obtained at the Festival Box Office (max. 2 per person) on the day of the concert. Afterwards, the musicians will ask for a voluntary contribution. The complete fringe programme will be published on www.oudemuziek.nl, as well as in the August issue of the Magazine and the pocket-sized Festival overview.
