Wilkommen! Vítejte! Vienna brings Sissi, the Tritsch Tratsch Polka and Mozartkugeln to mind. We might visualise the ballroom at Schönbrunn, or dream of a scrumptious café au lait with cake at Landtmann’s. In any case, names such as Aufschnaiter, Vilsmayer or Weichlein do not occupy first place on our list of familiar images. Likewise, well-known composers like Zelenka, Schmelzer and Biber are overshadowed by the Viennese classical masters. We do not have an easy task before us, but nonetheless, this is what this Early Music Festival plans to do. We will immerse ourselves in Austrian repertoire before Mozart and reveal the enormous wealtoh that the region displayed over many centuries. Vienna was the central area from which the Habsburgs operated for centuries. Their empire was one of the greatest European centres of power. From an artistic standpoint, the Habsburg cities were a magnet for supreme talents. As is appropriate for a true crossroads, influences from all over Europe were mixed to form a genuinely unique cocktail. This Early Music Festival corrects the optical illusion regarding Austrian repertoire. What nowadays seems marginal or anecdotal was trend-setting in the Renaissance and the Baroque, and above all, possessed a refinement that outclassed the rest of Europe. Five composers serve as central figures. Make sure to leaf through to the last section of this brochure. When the final notes in Utrecht have died away, the Early Music Season will begin, with concerts throughout the Netherlands and Belgium, all year round.

habsburg This year, the Early Music Festival has not chosen a place or an era, but a dynasty. The extraordinarily powerful Habsburgs ruled uninterruptedly from 1438 until the conclusion of World War I over large portions of Europe, with Vienna and Prague as centres of Habsburg power and culture. The liveliness of these cities and the grandeur of the Habsburgs, who were neither dukes nor kings, but emperors, attracted a colourful assembly of artists and musicians from Italy, France, Germany, Bohemia, Hungary and even their adversary Turkey. Of course, the jewel in the Habsburg crown is Vienna, which is surely the capital of music. But just what kind of music? Closer observation soon shows that, in musical history terms, Vienna is a blind spot... due to overexposure. The First Viennese School – with Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and later Schubert – is so present on modern-day concert stages that most music lovers cannot have the slightest notion of the musical riches of the pre-classical period. So let this be the rewarding challenge that we address this summer.

7

8

the repertoire The Austrian Habsburgs ruled for centuries over constantly changing portions of Central Europe, with Vienna as their military bassis. The region, which nowadays has a rather sleepy reputation, was for centuries the artistic focal point of Europe. This was primarily fuelled by the power politics of the artand music-loving Habsburgs, which were peaceful but nonetheless assertive. Our musical story begins deep in the Middle Ages. It takes on genuine momentum with the marriage of Maximilian and Mary of Burgundy: the fusion of their territories not only gave rise to an immensely strong European power, but provided Netherlandish composers of polyphony with a foothold in German-speaking areas, and later in Spain. It was a pivotal moment in European musical history. The Baroque in Austria and Prague has its own remarkable story. Again, cross pollination is the order of the day, but with added value. Close observation reveals that the exchange of styles is lifted to a higher plane: everything that found its way to the Habsburg cities takes on unmistakable flair and chic. The story of this Early Music Festival is structured by a succession of prominent composers. In Heinrich Isaac and Philippus de Monte we hear two highly contrasting Renaissance masters of the 15th and 16th centuries. Biber, Schmelzer and Bertali represent typical Austrian Baroque, while Fux and Zelenka provide a link between the 17th and 18th centuries. In general, we can assert that this repertoire is sorely underestimated. However, what today seems marginal or anecdotal was trend-setting in the Renaissance and the Baroque, and above all, possessed a refinement that outclassed the rest of Europe.

ars antiqua austria gunar letzbor Ars Antiqua Austria, the ensemble led by the Austrian violinist Gunar Letzbor returns to Utrecht. Last year, Letzbor presented the unknown mass by the Austrian Muffat as the opening concert of the Early Music Festival. This year, the ensemble is proud to fulfil the role of artist in residence. In four concerts, Ars Antiqua Austria presents a very special mixture of Austrian 17th-century Baroque repertoire. The ensemble kicks off with the festive Missa Alleluia by Biber. In the second concert, Letzbor presents the two Austrian composers he loves best: Aufschnaiter and Weichlein. Finally, during the last weekend of the festival, on two successive evenings at 10:30, we make room for a complete performance of Biber’s beloved Rosary Sonatas. Ars Antiqua Austria was founded in Linz in 1989 and seeks to acquaint the public with the roots of Austrian Baroque music. Thanks to Letzbor and his musicians, countless scores have received their first modern-day performance. The ensemble enjoys demonstrating the great diversity of cultures that have left their stamp on the Austrian Baroque, when Austria’s political boundaries and sphere of influence reached much further than they do today. .

collegium 1704 václav luks Václav Luks and his Collegium 1704 are our second artist in residence during this festival. In three concert programmes, this young ensemble from Prague presents a selection of music from Bohemia, with an accent on the early 18th century. Of course, the opening concert with festive music by Zelenka, T ma and Fux strikes the eye first. But just a few days later, these newcomers will again take over the main stage with a Caldara oratorio which has never been performed before, and is fittingly dedicated to Wenceslas, the patron saint of the modern-day Czech Republic. Their third concert is devoted to unknown Baroque music from their homeland of Bohemia. With Prague as its home basse, Collegium 1704 specialises in the works of Zelenka, Bach and Händel. The orchestra garnered international attention for its spectacular recording of Zelenka’s Officium Defunctorum. In only a few years, their glowing and highly energetic performances have won them a position at the pinnacle of Baroque music.

tivolivredenburg Home at last! After an extensive renovation lasting seven years, the old familiar Vredenburg is open once more. We can again enjoy the excellent acoustics of the Large Hall, which is a great step forwards. But there is more: Utrecht can now call on a good medium-sized hall for chamber (orchestra) music. The new music palace is certainly imposing. With five different halls and their accompanying lobbies, TivoliVredenburg is a location with unheard-of possibilities. Accordingly, not only concerts but lectures, symposia and the Early Music Fair will be housed here. Also, there will be guided tours for those who want to get acquainted with this fascinating building, both from the front and behind the scenes. Naturally, we will continue performances in the venues in the old centre of Utrecht, but as the festival centre, TivoliVredenburg will be a pleasant and inspiring place where every early music lover will feel at home.

young tigers of the keyboard They may be young, but make no mistake: this is no line-up of promising young keyboard players for the future. No, this is the generation that is succeeding right now. Dwarves on the shoulders of pioneers? It makes no difference. Each one of the harpsichordists and fortepianists we present to you during this Early Music Festival is a pedigreed musician who has earned a place on major concert platforms. We are happy to create a complete concert series featuring these young talents, every day at 13:00, because they deserve this. What is more, it is striking how different these players are. With their Russian, Chilean, Italian or French background, we can hear a wide spectrum of schools and aesthetic viewpoints. In this way, the series provides a sampling of everything that is happening in keyboard land in 2014. international van wassenaer competition The great acquisition of this Early Music Festival is the Van Wassenaer Competition (VWC). Since the first edition in 1986, the Van Wassenaer Competition has given a boost to the careers of beginning early music ensembles. We are proud that, as of 2014, the Early Music Festival will be the host of this renowned competition. The international jury consists of soprano CĂŠline Scheen, violinist and artist in residence Gunar Letzbor, fortepianist Petra Somlai, gambist and director of Armonico Tributo Lorenz Duftschmid, singer and director of Vox Luminis Lionel Meunier and Juilliard professor and coordinator Ben Sosland. The chairman is Krijn Koetsveld. Together they will judge a group of twelve ensembles who will compete for a place in the final. The participants who do not reach the final will be given master classes which will also be open to the public. For the winners, there is prize money to be shared. The list of participants will be published in the third issue of the Magazine for Early Music, which will appear around 15 August. the juilliard school In 2014, the Early Music Festival embarks on a project with The Juilliard School in New York, the world’s most prestigious conservatoire. For the past five years, Juilliard has had an early music department that is following an inspiring path. They will explain their pedagogical approach during the STIMU symposium Curriculum matters and a Summer School lecture, at which the current state of affairs regarding the early music scene in the United States will be described. Still more importantly, the impressive student orchestra Juilliard415 will be heard twice during the Early Music Festival. Their professors will also have their turn at a teachers’ concert and during master classes. Besides this, department coordinator Benjamin Sosland will be part of the jury for the Van Wassenaer Competition. sa 30 aug, 22.30 - Juilliard Baroque su 31 aug, 10.00 - Juilliard Masterclass with Phoebe Carrai and Dominic Teresi mo 1 sep, 11.00 - Juilliard415 Chamber Ensemble tu 2 sep, 10.00 - Juilliard Masterclass with Gonsatlo Ruiz and Cynthia Roberts th 4 sep, 9.30 - Summer School: Robert Mealy th 4 sep, 17.00 - Juilliard415 In collaboration with The Juilliard School for Music, Historical Performance Faculty, New York.

curriculum matters The International STIMU Symposium 2014 will examine in detail the early music education of the past and of today. Historical knowledge is of fundamental importance for persons who wish to be professionally active in early music. More and more, this causes growth in the appreciation of teaching methods from the past. But that is not all. Research and experimentation are becoming more important for today’s students, and a more interdisciplinary attitude is expected of them. It is time to develop a new curriculum which does have its roots in the past, but is geared towards the future. Curator Jed Wentz has assembled a three-day programme in which speakers from Oxford, the Juilliard School, Harvard, the Royal College of Music, London and the Bach-Archiv Leipzig have been invited to reflect on interdisciplinary teaching plans. This will initiate interaction between musicians and musicologists, young and old. Official language: English Speakers: Anne Smith, Jette Barnholt Hansen, Mary J. Carruthers, Michiel Schuijer, Nicola Cumer, Amy Blier-Carruthers, Julia Muller, Ben Sosland, Thérèse de Goede, Wendy Heller, Kate van Orden, Niels Berentsen, Kailan Rubinoff, Jed Wentz, Claire Genewein, Jennifer Thorp, Sharon Weller, Bernd Koska, Johannes Boer You can find the complete program on oudemuziek.nl/symposium

kunstkammer wien The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna is the guardian of what is possibly the most spectacular art collection in Europe: that of the Habsburg emperors. Besides its impressive Habsburg painting gallery, the museum is also the custodian of the so-called Kunstkammer: the collection of precious metal works, decorative objects, furniture, music boxes and rare exotica of Ferdinand II and Rudolf II, among others. Each of the objects being displayed reflects the good taste of the emperors. In contrast to the often obstreperous young dynasties such as the Bourbons in France, this collection attests to a controlled self-assurance, but to relaxed playfulness and humor as well. Its quality is so high that it makes one reflect on the musical life of the Habsburg courts: that too must have possessed unimaginable finesse. As of last year, the collection in Vienna can again be viewed in a completely new display. The works are too valuable to be transported, but we are bringing them to Utrecht all the same, in the form of a multimedia installation that will be open daily in Festival Centre TivoliVredenburg. In this way, with a cup of coffee in your hand and between concerts, you can enjoy projections of these remarkable works in peace. After this visual experience, you will return to the concert hall with a completely new field of reference. het laboratorium Our festival takes the next step in exploring the relationship between music, rhetoric, gesture and declamation by initiating a new festivalonderdeel: het laboratorium. The idea behind the laboratorium is to create a forum for scholars and performers to experiment with new modes of expression, free from the pressures of mounting a fully-staged production. The laboratorium will allow musicians, actors, dancers and scholars to work together on specific aspects of theatrical performance, while allowing the audience to enjoy a ‘kijkje in de keuken’. This year’s laboratorium, it’s maiden voyage, will centre on reconstructing the declamatory style for the spoken texts in Georg (Jiri?) Benda’s 1775 melodrama Medea. The genre of melodrama, in which spoken texts and musical accompaniments altoernate in order to highlight the different powers of words and music, was tremendously popular in the late 18th century. This year’s laboratoium team of scholars and performers aims to recreate the gestures and musical speaking style associated with Medea at the time of its premier, supported musically by Ensemble Aurora led by Enrico Gatti. carillon festival early music For the fourth time, the Carillon Festival Early Music will be held in the city centre of Utrecht. Every day, a carillon concert will be given whose theme is connected to the Early Music Festival 2014 – Habsburg. The concerts this year will take place at 16:00, in between the early music concerts in the churches of the city centre. The carillonneur of the city of Utrecht, Malgosia Fiebig, will play the leading role, but she has also invited some prominent colleagues. The carillon fringe will offer room for upcoming talent. For whoever dares: at the carillon concerts on 30 August and 6 September, 15 curious souls may come on a guided tour of the Dom Tower to have a look at the carillon. On Sunday 31 August, there will be a children’s guided tour.

films Early Music was once a movement fully convinced of the purity of its quest for authenticity: many performers felt that by concentrating exclusively on the musical sources of the past and thereafter applying the information to performance, that historically informed music-making would automatically result. More recently, however, Early Music has begun to reflect on itself, and to question how the culture in which reconstruction takes place influences by the musical results: in short, there is increased awareness that the performing artist himself is a part of a larger cultural context. In order to celebrate this ever-widening philosophical stance, and with topics like musical and theatrical gesture, declamation and expression in mind, the festival this year will offer its public a varied film series exhibited in an intimate space. Movies of very different types, created between 1925 to 2012 and all related in some way to our Vienna-Prague theme, will allow the bezoekers to refresh their eyes and ears, and to ponder the dramatic changes in European theatrical culture that have taken place since WWI. From silent films with live musical accompaniment, to grim and fantastic animations, to the Romantic suikerspin of Sissi, these movies highlight the diversity of approaches in 20th- and 21st-century cinematic story-telling. Acting too has changed, from the expressive and meaningful gestures of the ‘silent’ period to the entirely naturalistic styles of today. All of the films will be preceded by a short introductory lecture to help the viewer get the most out of the experience.

Large-scale and festive: this is how we begin this Habsburg Early Music Festival. By the Viennese court composer Fux, much admired by Bach, we hear the radiant Te Deum. Then two of his best students take their turn: we hear Tůma’s Stabat Mater and Zelenka’s Missa Divi Xaverii. It will be an evening full of Baroque discoveries in which the choir, orchestra and soloists of Prague’s Collegium 1704, conducted by artist in residence Václav Luks, promise us an electrifying performance.

Treasures from the Viennese Minorite

Anne Smith

Monastery

The Pedagogical Guidonian Hand

Manuscript 726 from the Minorite Monastery in Vienna contains music from the heart of the Habsburg repertoire at the end of the 17th century. The great influence of Italian composers on Viennese musical life proves evident: sonatas by Bertali, Valentini, and Albertini are represented in the manuscript. The brilliant Croatian violinist Bojan Čičić plays several of the loveliest violin sonatas with his four-member chamber group, including a remarkable anonymous contrapunctus on Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern.

Bell pealing & and Bell walking tours

Malgosia Fiebig

Quacking, growling, meowing and nightingale song: these are sounds that we do not readily associate with the carillon. However, the sounds of nature have always spoken to the imagination of composers, and were especially loved in the Austrian Baroque. City carillonnneur Malgosia Fiebig presents works by festival composers Schmelzer, Biber and Kerll.

The Utrecht Bell Ringers’ Guild stirs all the bells of Utrecht’s city centre to life. It begins with the peal of the Dom Tower, which gradually swells to a “grand peal” with all 14 bells. This can only be heard a few times a year: at Easter, on New Year’s Day, and during the Early Music Festival. Then bells from other parts of the city join in, so that the music of the bells wafts over the city. At 12:15 two bell walking tours directed by guides will start out at Domplein, a western and a southern route, that will follow the relay from close at hand.

+ Looking at the carillon in conjunction with Utrecht Tourism Starts 10.30 AM, duration: 75 min Gather at the Domtoren entrance, Domplein 21 €10 pp, order number 03 No live-streaming at this concert.

12:15: Bell walking tours led by a guide, western and southern route. Free, but space is limited. Tickets must be claimed from 10:00 onwards in the Festival Centre TivoliVredenburg.

In the mid-18th century, the familiar harpsichord and the still young fortepiano led a brotherly existence side by side. The Russian Olga Paschenko, a pupil of Alexei Lubimov and Richard Egarr, plays both instruments alongside each other. The great Fux, who survived three emperors as court composer in Vienna, is represented by his Capriccio and Fugue in g. With his Gradus ad Parnassum, Fux created an influential pedagogical work on counterpoint, of which Haydn handed on his copy, covered with notes, to Mozart.

Sances: A Key Figure in Vienna

Tiburtina Regina lucti – The Mourning Queen

The Italian Giovanni Felice Sances arrived in 1636 in Vienna, where he worked till his death in 1679 as a singer and chapel master. Sances grew to be one of the key figures in Viennese musical life: from there his fame reached across all of Europe. Ensemble Vivante paints his portrait with vocal duets and fragments from his operas Apollo deluso and Aristomene Messenio, which he produced along with Schmelzer and Draghi for the Habsburg emperor Leopold I.

The eight female voices of Tiburtina from Prague sing, with harp accompaniment, religious and lyric poetry from the court of the culture-loving king Wenceslas II. He ruled around 1300 over the turbulent region of Bohemia. Tiburtina concentrates on the tragic life of his wife, Judith of Habsburg, who died at age 26, only days after her coronation. For the first time in 700 years, we hear poetry dedicated to her. 43

Per Sonat / Sabine Lutzenberger The Habsburg Mayor of Augsburg

Emperor Maximilian I, who married Mary of Burgundy, was called “the mayor” in Augsburg because he spent so much time in this city. As a warlike Renaissance man with a taste for grandeur, Maximilian was always short of money, and he owed enormous sums to his Augsburg friend and Maecenas Jakob Fugger. After all, Maximilian invested heavily in his ensembles, and composers such as De la Rue, Josquin, Isaac and Senfl were members of his personal circle. A great deal of their music is contained in an anonymous manuscript, the Augsburger Liederbuch, of which some works are even dedicated to Fugger.

As early as the Renaissance, Italian composers were received at the Habsburg court in Vienna with open arms. In the Baroque, Bertali and Sances created a sensation there, and they influenced many Austrian composers with their “modern” Italian operas and chamber music. Schmelzer was one of these: tonight we hear a Germanlanguage song of his. Soprano Céline Scheen possesses the necessary poetic feeling and imagination to bring 17th century repertoire to life, and in the process she will be in the excellent company of Philippe Pierlot and his musicians.

Tore Tom Denys Workshop Renaissance Singing

Singing from the Book

Long before Mozart and Beethoven, the musical life of Vienna was dominated by Franco-Flemish composers such as De Monte, Vaet and Regnart. Under the supervision of Tore Denys (Cinquecento, La Capilla) you will sing works of those composers that worked for the Viennese court and in Praha. One of the works will be the beautiful Miserere of De Monte.

The on-the-spot (ex tempore) creation of polyphony on the basis of existing Gregorian melodies was an important skill for the Renaissance singer. “Singing from the book”, as the theoretician Tinctoris called it, was probably an indispensable step in learning how to compose counterpoint. The musicologist Niels Berentsen sheds light on research into the reconstruction of the practice of improvised counterpoint in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Children’s Treasure Hunt

Is it not unfortunate that Froberger’s music, which can be counted among the finest repertoire of the 17th century, is almost exclusively reserved for harpsichordists and organists? Why not hand this repertoire to a couple of chamber musicians and see what happens? That is the novel approach of the gambist Nima Ben David. In the violinist Koji Yoda and the harpsichordist Pierre Trocellier, she has found two like-minded, poetic souls to conduct this experiment.

Johann Jacob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll both displayed the cosmopolitan attitude that characterised many German composers of the 17th century. In addition, the similarities between them are striking: both studied in Rome, worked in Vienna and converted to Roman Catholicism. The Romanian harpsichordist Alina Rotaru, who made a great impression in 2012 with her Sweelinck recital in Utrecht, places these two masters of the keyboard side by side.

Fede e amore

Friend and Enemy of the Habsburgs

Viennese Baroque music for voices and virtuosic trombones: this is an intriguing combination that provides instant insight into the high technical and musical level that composers like Caldara, Fux and Conti demanded from their musicians of the Viennese court chapel in the first half of the 18th century. The timbre of the British countertenor Alex Potter blends perfectly with the warm glow of the trombones of Catherine Motuz and Simen van Mechelen.

The specialist ensemble Leones employs (sometimes coarse) songs of love, fate and war to create a unique portrait of the Minnesinger, bon vivant and diplomat Oswald von Wolkenstein. During his turbulent life, “Oswald the Cosmopolitan” travelled to every corner of the known world and was constantly at odds with the Habsburg princes. Thanks to his interest in a new development, polyphony, he is one of the earliest German Renaissance composers.

A great director tackles a great opera. Bergman partially filmed his version of The Magic Flute in the well preserved and beautiful 18th-century theatre at Drottningholm. Easter Cantatas by Zelenka

Contrapunctus De Monte, Lassus, Padovano

The Collegium Marianum from Prague focuses on music from the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly by Central European composers. Their efforts were rewarded by UNESCO in 2010. Today’s programme offers music by Zelenka, who admittedly spent most of his career in Dresden. However, a number of remarkable works by him are known that are linked to the area of his birth, around Prague. The magnificent Sepolcri were performed for Easter and demonstrate Zelenka’s feeling for colour and drama.

The British ensemble Contrapunctus guarantees the highest level of performance with their clear, flexible voices. The weddings of the Habsburg princes provided the perfect opportunity to underline their power with visual and musical display. Contrapunctus sings mass movements and wedding motets by De Monte, including his superb Missa Si ambulavero and the theatrical Europam pueræ, and works by Padovano and Lassus. 55

The Ricercar Consort presents music dedicated to Mary by three generations of Viennese court musicians. The Stabat Mater, the supreme Marian lament, was not permitted to be sung during the liturgy in the late 17th century, but its popularity remained undiminished. Sances’s moving setting was probably heard in the private chapel of Leopold I, who for that matter was a more than serviceable composer in his own right. The star of the evening is the Spanish countertenor Carlos Mena.

The Schola Gregoriana Pragensis is one of the leading ensembles for the performance of Gregorian and medieval religious music from Central Europe. The music of the Polish cleric Petrus Wilhelmi de Grudencz, born in 1392, was sung in Bohemian churches till the beginning of the 17th century. Around 1440, he was in the service of Frederick III, and presumably accompanied the emperor on many travels. As a composer his roots were in the Middle Ages, but intellectually he already belonged to the Renaissance.

A post-war fantasy of more innocent times, Sissi retains its sentimental appeal, even in our more cynical times. Capriccio Stravagante / Skip Sempé Profeti della Quinta / Elam Rotem

Capella de la Torre / Katharina Bäuml Music for Emperor Ferdinand I

Music in the Kunstkammer

Capella de la Torre is unmatched in repertoire for Renaissance reed instruments like the shawm and dulcian. The central figure of this programme is Ferdinand I, Archduke of Austria, who became emperor in 1558. Ferdinand was a music lover and maintained an excellent court chapel. The music of his chapel masters, such as Jacobus Vaet and Arnold von Bruck, is preserved in sources from Bohemia, Hungary, Germany and Poland.

Surrounded by projections of the exotic treasures which the Habsburgs collected for their spectacular Kunstkammer, Skip Sempé presents music for the “Prague” emperor Rudolf II. With chansons and madrigals by Willaert, De Rore, and Byrd for voices and consort of viols, this concert should give an impression of the finesse and the virtually inconceivable craftsmanship of a vanished age. 71

Praga Magna

Les Cornets Noirs / Johannes Strobl

At the end of the 16th century, Emperor Rudolf II summoned the finest artists to his residence in Prague, thereby transforming the city into one of the most important cultural centres in Europe. Court composer De Monte, who entered the service of the Habsburg emperor in 1568 after travels in Italy and England, was at that time one of Europe’s most renowned musicians. His 8-voice Missa Confitebor tibi Domine originates from that period. The Prague ensemble Cappella Mariana presents De Monte’s mass alongside several of his madrigals and works by his colleagues Zanchi and Regnart

Leopold I: Emperor and Composer

Emperor Leopold I was actually more interested in music than politics. Not only did he have outstanding musicians like Schmelzer in his service: music also flowed from his own pen. Les Cornets Noirs explore his vocal and instrumental works, including the Marian motet Vertatur in luctum and sonatas for four gambas and basso continuo. The Tres Lectiones, which the emperor wrote after the death of his second wife, are impressive for their musical maturity and tangible personal sorrow. 73

Workshop Baroque Dance 2: Gigue

Declamation and Gesture in German Theatre

Due to great success, the workshop in Baroque dance returns. Have you always wanted to know more about the secrets of Baroque dance? Rachel Farr guides you into this wonderful world of music and movement with a different dance each day. Today this will be the gigue. Of course, you will be taking to the dance floor yourself.

Mary Helen Dupree earned her doctorate in German literature at Columbia University, and focuses her research on historical stage performances. In this Summer School, as an introduction to the laboratory staging of Medea (3, 4, 5 September), she tells about the 18th-century German traditions of declamation and gesture in the theatre, with special attention to the genre of melodrama.

Il Rossignolo

Viennese Pastries

In the mid-17th century, Alessandro Poglietti was of the opinion that the development of music was completed: perfection had been reached. The solution that allowed him to continue composing was to dot his music with sounds, objects and events from the physical world. In this way, he dedicated a cycle inspired by the song of the nightingale to his patron Leopold I. The Canadian harpsichordist Mark Edwards unleashes all his talents on the programmatic music of Poglietti, Frescobaldi and Kerll. Edwards won the harpsichord competition of Bruges in 2012.

A baker’s son who astonished people with his violin playing; a harpsichordist who travelled through all of Europe in order to play with the best musicians; an Italian violinist who composed magnificent but textless recitatives; and a violinist who murdered a singer in the cathedral of Messina and had to flee his country. All these personalities produced the most fascinating and original Austrian music of the 17th century. Gli Incogniti presents this programme like a basket full of sweet rolls that you cannot stop eating. 79

Servir Antico / Catalina Vicens

Are you curious about the new TivoliVredenburg? Then our daily guided tour both in public areas and behind the scenes is just for you. And with a bit of luck, you may sneak in a portion of a rehearsal as well.

A Dynasty of Founders

In late 14th century sources, the young Medieval specialist Catalina Vicens discovered sacred music from Austria and Switzerland (where the Habsburg castle can still be found). The throne of the Holy Roman Empire was at that point not yet occupied by the Habsburgs, but the moment was soon to come. The organetto, slide trumpet and vielle of ensemble Servir Antico accompany soprano Els Janssens-Vanmunster in repertoire from a turbulent period.

Benda’s Medea

Violin Sonatas on Carillon

A team of musicians and researchers collaborate on a theatrical mini-production, with the accent on experimentation. Benda’s melodrama Medea (1775) is the departure point of an investigation into the interaction of music, declamation, rhetoric and gesture. The musical contributions are in the hands of the Ensemble Quartet directed by violinist Enrico Gatti. As an introduction, you will receive a short presentation on the main themes of the research.

City carillonneur Malgosia Fiebig turns her attention to a special area of Austrian repertoire: violin sonatas by festival composers Pandolfi Mealli, Biber and Schmelzer. The violinists in this region were of an incredible calibre, which resulted in technically very challenging music that also evokes astonishment on the carillon. + Guided tour for children 5+ Mandatory adult accompaniment. Gallicantus The Secret Link between De Monte and Byrd

Švankmajer is an internationally lauded Czech film-maker whose surreal, multimedia work has inspired a younger generation of animators and artists. His love of puppets led to the creation of the disturbing short film Rakvickárna, in which hand-puppets battle it out to the death: and yet somehow Svankmajer can find humor in the exaggerated violence. The public is advised, however, that his films are certainly not suitable for children. They remain, in their intensity, their virtuosity and their perverse wit, monuments to 20th-century black humor.

According to an 18th-century manuscript, De Monte came to England in 1554 to accompany his employer Philip II, and met William Byrd there. Did they find themselves to be of a similar mind, with their shared Roman Catholic faith and comparable musical language? Years later, they made an exchange of motets by post: an intriguing musical correspondence, which is reconstructed in this concert by the British ensemble Gallicantus. You will hear Super flumina Babylonis by De Monte and Quomodo cantabimus van Byrd, in addition to other motets by these soul mates.

Violin Sonatas by Schmelzer and Organ

A first: the International Van Wassenaer Competition for early music ensembles finds its new place at the heart of the Early Music Festival, with the semi-final taking place today. Ten ensembles of varying distribution will display their best efforts in repertoire from the 17th and 18th centuries. They will be judged by a jury whose members include artist in residence Gunar Letzbor and Juilliard professor Benjamin Sosland. Only four to six will go on to the final on Saturday!

Works by Kerll Kerll

Schmelzer and Kerll were colleagues in the imperial chapel in Vienna: Kerll was the organist and Schmelzer the Kapellmeister, incidentally one of the few non-Italians to hold that post. Emperor Leopold I was extremely impressed by the improvisations that Kerll played during his coronation mass in Frankfurt and succeeded in bringing him to Vienna. The duo Édouard-Eichelberger presents sonatas, toccatas and battaglias from the loft of the great organ in the Geertekerk.

In the Renaissance, composers enjoyed playing with the material from pre-existing compositions. There are numerous arrangements by Heinrich Isaac in which he virtuosically fleshes out an existing chanson into a quodlibet, or weaves a small motif into a network of counterpoint. This was no coincidence: a tradition of rosary devotion had existed in Salzburg for some time, and the 15 mysteries had also been depicted elsewhere on paper and canvas, or in stone. Art historian Kathleen Nieuwenhuisen of the University of Utrecht provides insight into this special form of Marian art.

Due to its great success, the workshop in Baroque dance returns. Have you always wanted to know more about the secrets of Baroque dance? Rachel Farr guides you into this wonderful world of music and movement with a different dance each day. Today this will be the allemande. Of course, you will be taking to the dance floor yourself. Violin Sonatas of Mozart, Beethoven, Hummel

Early Music Exhibition

The Russian violinist Sergey Malov made an impression two years ago at the Early Music Festival with his performances of Bach’s cello suites on viola da spalla. Now this young super-talent takes up his classical violin for a programme with the Salzburg fortepianist Florian Birsak. They play the Sonata in B-flat, KV 454 by Mozart; the Sonata in E-flat, Op. 5, no. 3 by his student Hummel; and the Sonata in A, Op. 12, no. 2 by their friend Beethoven.

More than 75 musical instrument builders, music publishers and CD producers will be on hand with advice and/ or demonstrations of their instruments. The perfect chance for professionals and amateurs to try out and compare historical stringed, plucked, keyboard and wind instruments for themselves. Jean Rondeau

St. Walburgis

Palestrina, Fux, Muffat, Wagenseil and Haydn on the Harpsichordel

In the 8th century, Walburgis, a king’s daughter, entered the convent at an early age. She evangelized large portions of what was to become the Habsburg Empire and was canonized after her death. Her grave in Eichstätt (South Germany) became a site of pilgrimage. The Flemish ensemble Psallentes presents the Gregorian office notated for Walburgis in an antiphonary in Zutphen. The power and purity of Gregorian chant make this an intense, almost hypnotic homage to this remarkable saint.

The influence of Fux’s volume on couterpoint Gradus ad Parnassum, which can be freely translated as “steps to perfection”, is noticeable among his students, but also on the autodidact Haydn, who learned to compose by painstakingly going through all the exercises. Harpsichordist Jean Rondeau, winner of the harpsichord competition in Bruges and a thoroughly inspiring player, places the master and his students side by side. 100

A team of musicians and researchers collaborate on a theatrical mini-production, with the accent on experimentation. Benda’s melodrama Medea (1775) is the departure point for an investigation into the interaction of music, declamation, rhetoric and gesture. The musical contributions are in the hands of the Ensemble Quartet directed by violinist Enrico Gatti. As an introduction, you will receive a short presentation on the main themes of the research.

Director: Karel Zeman

Zeman’s cult classic tells the fabulous and nonsensical tale of Baron Munchausen who flies from the moon to 18th-century Turkey. Zeman’s movie displays a clever, witty and artistic mix of live action and animation, and was hailed as a masterpiece upon its release. Terry Gillian, of Monty Python fame, is an especial fan.

Poglietty wrote this piece as a birthday gift for the Empress. In a colorfull procession, folk musicians from multiple parts of the Habsburg empire pass by in twenty variations.

The British vocalists of Stile Antico turn their attention to music for two great Habsburg princes: Maximilian II and his grandson Charles V. Anthony Bailes

Few works for the violin speak so strongly to the imagination as the 15 Rosary Sonatas by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber. They are full-fledged Baroque affect machines, and highly virtuosic besides, demanding the maximum from both the player and the instrument. The violin is tuned differently for each sonata, thereby increasing the expressive possibilities. Artist in residence Gunar Letzbor presents this tour de force in two parts, tonight and tomorrow evening.

The Lute in Austria

Around the year 1700, the popularity of the lute in Austria was undiminished, in contrast to a country such as France, where the guitar was on the rise. Master lutenist Anthony Bailes presents music by composers such as Johann Anton Losy, Aureo Dix and Matthias Sigismund Biechteler. Their works attest to the waning influence of French lute repertoire, in favour of the more tuneful style of Italian opera.

Universi populi

Director: Jan Hřbejk

Fuelled by tales of miracles, the cult of Ludmilla and her grandson Wenceslas, the patron saints of Bohemia, grew rapidly in the 12th century, especially in Benedictine monasteries. The monasteries gave a boost to the musical life of Bohemia, which was further strengthened by the construction of the new cathedral of Prague and the founding of the University. Discantus follows a musical line from the 12th to the 15th century, during which the liturgical traditions of Prague were enriched by the beginnings of polyphony.

A black comedy, Pupendo tells the story of a talented artist in Czechoslovakia, who has been blacklisted by the communists. He and his family survive by producing kitsch ceramic objects. The arrival of an art historian who rediscovers the artist’s work brings the promise of well-deserved recognition. But fate has a surprise in store that upsets the plans of all involved. Vivaldi in Prague

This ensemble, whose name is just as piquant as its style of playing, investigates the relationship of Vivaldi with Prague. In 1730, Vivaldi conducted his opera Il Farnace there, and his music had considerable influence on young composers from Prague like Jiránek and Miča. In addition, Count Wenzel von Morzin, Vivaldi’s Maecenas, maintained an excellent orchestra there for whom the composer wrote virtuosic concertos. The mysterious glass harmonica

Biber: Rosary Sonatas (II)

Everyone is probably familiar with the effect: when you rub your finger over the rim of a wineglass, a tuneful, almost unearthly sound issues forth. The peculiar glass harmonica was built on this principle in the mid-18th century. The instrument swiftly gained popularity, and composers such as Mozart, Reichardt and Röllig composed curious music which the Wiener Glasharmonika Duo plays and explains during this intimate midnight concert.

Yesterday, the Austrian violinist and artist in residence Gunar Letzbor played the first part of the virtuosic Rosary sonatas by Biber: today part two follows. The 15 sonatas each represent one of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary. With this high technical level and emotional depth, Biber left an example for all violin composers after him. Gottfried Finger was born in Moravia, but spent a great deal of his career in England. Although the viola da gamba was not nearly as popular in Eastern Europe as it was in France and England, Finger’s music clearly bears the characteristics of the Austrian-Bohemian violin acrobats Biber and Schmelzer, and shares their virtuosic idiom. The Prague gambist Petr Wagner, who once was a student of Wieland Kuijken in The Hague, recorded these demanding sonatas for CD last year.

In 1453 Constantinople, which was then the most prosperous city in Europe and the capital of the once mighty Roman and Byzantine Empire, fell into the hands of the Ottomans. This was a painful loss for Christianity, but the closing of the door to the East did establish the claim of the Habsburg princes to the throne of the Holy Roman Empire, which was visible in the two-headed eagle on their shield. The American ensemble Cappella Romana, a specialist for 20 years in this repertoire, sings Byzantine hymns and the so-called Byzantine motets of Dufay.

Zefiro, led by oboist Alfredo Bernardini, is known as the pre-eminent Baroque wind ensemble. In this new concert programme, they compare music for one or two oboes, strings and continuo by the master Fux (including his concerto Le dolcezze e l’amarezze della notte) with that of his Bohemian pupil Zelenka (Ouverture and the well-known Hypochondria) and Antonín Reichenauer (Ouverture en Concerto in Bes). Bernard Winsemius

Director: William Wellman

Biber, Schmelzer and Bach on Carillon

This silent film follows the experiences of two American soldiers in WWI, and in doing so makes a strong pacifist statement. The cinematography was groundbreaking in its day, and the spectacular airborne battles of the fighter pilots are still thrilling to watch. Wings received the first ever Academy Award for best picture. Its stark anti-war message serves not only as commemoration of the beginning of the war 100 years ago, but also as an upbeat to the closing concert of the festival, Vox Luminis’ performance of a requiem for the Habsburg family: The Great War marked the end of the Habsburgers’ empire and power.

Bernard Winsemius is one of the most famous carillonneurs in the world, and we welcome him with pride back to our festival. Until 2012, he was city carillonneur in Haarlem and Amsterdam, and he has taught at such institutions as the Rotterdam Conservatoire and the Carillon School in Amersfoort. In 1981, he was appointed alongside Gustav Leonhardt as organist of the monumental historic organs of the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, a position he still retains. Today he plays arrangements of sonatas for violin and basso continuo by festival composers Biber and Schmelzer, and by the great Bach. 122

Companyia Musical / Josep Cabré

Exotic Baroque: Schmelzer, Biber, Fux

Isaac: Missa in festo assumptionis Beatae Maria Virginis

The young Swiss violinist Meret Lüthi and her orchestra present Baroque music from around 1683, when the Turks were again knocking at the gates of Vienna. This inspired many composers to write programmatic works which imitated the sounds of battle, such as Schmelzer’s Fechtschule and the Türkenschlacht by his son Andreas Anton. Elements of Turkish folk music make Turcaria by Fux one of the most exciting, exotic works of the Baroque.

Today, the Companyia Musical, directed by the baritone Josep Cabré, sings the rarely heard mass for the Assumption of the Virgin by Heinrich Isaac. The composer, who very likely came from Brabant and served the Viennese emperor Maximilian I from 1497 till his death in 1517, alternates polyphonic movements with Gregorian chants from the Viennese Graduale Pataviensis. 123

Friends make it possible Do you love early music and find it important to support new talent? Do you like to have the best concert seats, and would you like to receive a discount for our concerts? If so, become a Friend of Early Music. Each year, 75,000 music lovers attend over 250 concerts that we present during the Early Music Festival and the Early Music Season. However, we cannot do this work without your financial support. For this reason, we ask you to contribute to the preservation of early music culture in the Netherlands. Of course your donation is meant to support the Organisatie Oude Muziek, but it also affords you a number of privileges. You receive the Early Music Magazine four times per year (in Dutch), are welcome to attend our yearly Friends’ Concert, and receive a discount on all admission prices and CDs. In addition, you can order advance tickets for the Festival, thus providing an opportunity to get the best seats. As a Friend, you make a contribution towards keeping Early Music alive for yourself and for coming generations. You can be a Vriend and profit from the advantages from ₏ 40 per year. Your friendship is valid for a season.
