MUSIC FROM THE REFORMATIONS

Foreword

MUZIEK VAN DE REFORMATIES Xavier Vandamme directing manager

This year countless events are taking place to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Luther’s theses concerning indulgences. The year 1517 gained overwhelming symbolic significance as the official start of an unstoppable revolution within European history. But Luther’s act of rebellion was anything but an isolated event. Throughout Europe there were ideological shifts going on, with movements of many hues springing up in different regions and in different contexts. In this Festival, therefore, we are not going in search of some hypothetical unique essence of ‘The Reformation’. We prefer to present a multitude of ideas and movements, large and small, which together created an exciting field of influence. In terms of the music we are concentrating on the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, plus their immediate antecedents and the direct results of so much revolutionary energy. A few special projects immediately catch the eye: the inAuguration of TivoliVredenburg’s new large Baroque organ, a mini-festival with 150 psalms set by an equal number of composers, a dance spectacle at the court of the French king François I – everything that Calvin so abhorred! – and Benjamin Alard playing Bach’s Clavier-Übung in its entirety. The Counter-Reformation also receives attention, and the theatre production Musica Fugit reminds us of the hundreds of thousands of religious refugees in the seventeenth century. The STIMU symposium and the new series entitled What's new? reflect on both the past and the future of the Early Music Movement. It’s going to be a colourful Festival, with depth and with room for reflection, and, as always, packed with festive moments. A huge thank you and congratulations to our many partners and friends, and a warm welcome to you this summer in Utrecht! %%% %

Sing, Fight, Weep, Pray / Music from the Reformations

It is 500 years since Luther nailed his 95 theses concerning indulgences to the doors of the Castle Chapel in Wittenberg, which at that time served as the university’s notice board. The rapid dissemination of his message – initially in print and later also by means of music – set in motion a revolutionary machine whose field of influence stretched far beyond religion alone. A somewhat delayed but no less innovative reaction developed in response: the Counter-Reformation. Luther loved music with a passion: he was an admirer of the Flemish composer Josquin Desprez and composed music himself. However, a festival dedicated to Reformations – in the plural! - cannot be restricted to early Lutheranism alone. This is why we will also explore the revolutionary power generated by the writings and deeds of Calvin, who, like Luther, was one of the great intellectuals of his time. We will also turn our attention to England, where the context and political undertones are of a totally different order. But here, as elsewhere, events result in fascinating social shifts….and in violence. ‘There’s nothing new under the sun.’ Our story focuses on the 16th century, which, with its new revolutionary spirit, vigorously combats ecclesiastical abuse of power, and on the 15th century, which prepares the way for a complex web of reformations and heresies. With large-scale cantatas, liturgical hymns, cheerful songs, exuberant spectacles and intimate chamber music, this promises to be an exceptional Festival: a musical narrative about shrewd minds, innovators and emotions running high. 555 5

Inwijdingsfestival voor het nieuwe barokorgel in de Grote Zaal

ORGELFEEST@TIVOLIVREDENBURG INAUGURAL FESTIVAL FOR THE NEW BAROQUE ORGAN IN THE LARGE HALL On Friday, 25 August 2017 the new large organ in TivoliVredenburg is being christened! The instrument, built according to the Baroque standard, is given pride of place under the balcony behind the main stage. The case was designed in close consultation with the concert hall architect Herman Hertzberger, while the organist Peter van Dijk designed the instrument and the Utrecht organ builders Van Vulpen constructed it. It will definitely be a new pearl in the Festival’s crown: fifteen registers, two manuals and a pedalboard, plus an ingenious design that renders the instrument suitable for repertoire from Baroque up to Early Romantic. We’re putting it to the test straightaway. As well as the inAuguration of the organ by artist in residence Lorenzo Ghielmi during the opening concert, every Festival day’s programme will incorporate a concert that illustrates one of the organ’s many different facets. 555 5

KOP LORENZO GHIELMI SUBKOP & LA DIVINA ARMONIA Inleiding

The ‘Uomo universale’does exist! Lorenzo Ghielmi is a researcher and author, composer, organist, harpsichordist, fortepianist, master improviser and conductor.

Once co-founder of Il Giardino Armonico, he now has his own ensemble, La Divina Armonia (2005): this is no crazy turbo Baroque, but hyperefficient declamation and a sound culture that commands respect. Anyone who has heard Ghielmi play the organ or harpsichord live can confirm that his insight into form and style results in exceptionally concentrated performances. Thanks to the attentive phrasing and crystal-clear articulation, each work becomes an unforgettable narrative that captivates the listener until the very last note. Ghielmi is performing three times in Utrecht: he will christen the new organ in TivoliVredenburg, present ‘Organistenmusiken’ from Luther’s Germany, give an organ recital of repertoire from the Reformation and CounterReformation, and even play a work of his own. 222 2 2

Flamboyant Renaissance spectacle with Doulce Mémoire

MAGNIFICENCES AT THE COURT OF FRANÇOIS I An evening without television, computer games or internet: boring? Not at the court of the French king François I! This Renaissance monarch achieved fame with his victories on the battlefield, but this was possibly exceeded by the notoriety he acquired due to his excessive court spectacles, or ‘Magnificences’: a series of tableaux with musical entertainment of various sorts – from filthy chansons and wild dances to theatre and acrobatics. This copious menu sent the courtiers into ecstasies, but must have filled one man with horror: church reformer John Calvin, who must have found few signs of godliness in the festivities of the Catholic court. Doulce Mémoire has created a programme from pretty well everything Calvin didn’t like: a farmers’ party, war songs, an allegorical ballet, a dance battle, an ode to the Harmony of the Spheres and much more... With Tarot cards determining the order of the tableaux, you won’t know where to look: Renaissance costumes made of miles of the most splendid silk, rare columnar recorders and complex choreographies… a journey through time you’ll never forget! $$$ $

The Holy Grail of keyboard music in 7 concerts

BENJAMIN ALARD PLAYS BACH’S CLAVIER-ÜBUNG Harpsichordist and organist Benjamin Alard has been following in Bach’s footsteps for years now, and during this edition of the Festival he will climb the Parnassus of his hero’s keyboard oeuvre: the Clavier-Übung, a four-part collection of compositions for various keyboard instruments. Alard has pieced together seven breathtaking solo recitals. On the organ and harpsichord he will play the six Partitas (Book I), the Italian Concerto and the Overture in the French Style (Book II), the German Organ Mass and the four duets (Book III, which Bach published in 1739 on the occasion of the festivities in Leipzig surrounding the 200th anniversary of Luther’s Reformation sermon in the Thomaskirche), finishing off with Book IV, the Goldberg Variations. And as if the challenge weren’t great enough already, he will play it all by heart. 444 4

Taking flight with Kamchàtka

MUSICA FUGIT During the past year there was not one newspaper or news broadcast that didn’t report on the plight of refugees, driven out by hate and violence and in search of a better life. But streams of refugees have appeared throughout history. For example, in 1685 Louis XIV caused a mass migration by revoking the Edict of Nantes, thereby bringing to an end the tolerant attitude towards Protestantism. Hundreds of thousands of Huguenots fled intolerant France, to settle in England and the Netherlands. Not until a hundred years later was religious freedom restored. Street theatre group Kamchàtka plunges us into the world of the refugee. Fleeing is here perceived as an act of rebellion and an expression of personal freedom. A person in flight can’t make it alone: the solidarity of travel companions, neighbours and passers-by is crucial. Musica Fugit is a confrontational but above all warm, humane homage to refugees. In this wordless production you too can become part of the show. Suspense, mystery, solidarity, melancholy, hope and generosity permeate the journey you are taking alongside the actors and musicians. The last note does not signify the end of the journey: out of the togetherness emerges a new beginning. 444 4 Sa 26 Aug 10.00 and 14.00 / Leeuwenbergh Musica Fugit

1,000 years of choral music in 12 concerts

150 PSALMS For monks they are beacons in time: the musical rhythm of the day. Jews consider them the heritage of King David, who in his poetry portrayed the human soul. And for music addicts they form the foundations of a majestic repertoire, which encompasses the most diverse forms and styles… The Psalms are primeval songs in which every strong emotion and life theme is represented. Far more than merely being ‘the word of God’, they are the expression of what man thinks and feels. In cooperation with the Nederlands Kamerkoor we are presenting 150 Psalms: the largest mini-festival imaginable, in which all 150 Psalms, by an equal number of composers, can be heard. Four choirs – joining the Nederlands Kamerkoor are the Renaissance specialists, The Tallis Scholars, the excellent Det Norske Solistkor and the New York Trinity Wall Street Choir – will perform the Psalms over two days, in a massive twelve-part concert cycle, supplemented by speakers in the fringe programme. We will hear not only centuries-old psalm settings, but also brand new works, commissioned by the Festival. $$$ $ $

PICCOLA ACCADEMIA DI MONTISI HARPSICHORD MASTERCLASSES The renowned Montisi harpsichord summer course is coming to Utrecht for the second time. For up-and-coming keyboard heroes this intense week is an absolute must. Founded by harpsichord and clavichord builder Bruce Kennedy, the course has in previous Festival editions been able to count on a constellation of top teachers – from Gustav Leonardt and Christophe Rousset to Bob van Asperen and Pierre Hantaï. During the day individual study alternates with concerts, musical encounters and many other delights – from monuments and museums to cafés and culinaria. Work hard, play hard! But in the morning it’s only the keys that count: in demanding masterclasses given this year by the international keyboard stars Pierre Hantaï, Marco Mencoboni and Richard Egarr, the musicians explore new terrain and push back frontiers in the areas of repertoire, technique and interpretation. The summer school is a win-win situation: while the young lions take their place at the keyboard, you as an observer can enjoy the instructive interaction with their teachers. 555 5

The finest produced by the man from Magdeburg

MAGICIAN TELEMANN Georg Philipp Telemann, one of the very greatest figures in Baroque music, died precisely 250 years ago. He was more popular than his good friend J.S.Bach! Idolized by his contemporaries, Telemann then proceeded to be forgotten for centuries. It is time for a serious re-evaluation of him, in which the Early Music Festival is glad to play a leading role. The wealth of colours in his music, the unique way in which he reconciles French, Italian, Polish and German elements, the inventiveness and unbridled imagination: discover the magician Telemann during various Festival concerts and a genuine Telemann weekend. Special attention is being given to the solo Fantasies which he composed for different instruments - violin, harpsichord and traverso - and to the only recently discovered one for gamba. There is an opera evening, and the renowned recorder player Erik Bosgraaf is playing trio sonatas with violinist Dmitry Sinkovsky. A selection from Telemann’s cantatas provides the icing on the cake. 444 4

STIMU-symposium Bovenkop

WHY LOOK BACK? KOP SUBKOP THE SEDUCTIVE POWER OF THE MUSICAL PAST During this edition of the STIMU symposium – our annual Inleiding encounter with experts from the field of performance and musicology – the Early Music Festival is looking in the mirror. Why early music? Did the seductive power of the past (as Wanda Landowska described it) rightly win the day, or was Richard Strauss’ Platte feartekst of a reactionary tendency 5 5 the Early Music Movement well-founded? It is now clear5that 5 was no 20th-century phenomenon, but dates from at least a hundred years earlier. In this symposium the account of the historical approach to music becomes itself an object of reflection. The lectures examine basic principles such as objectivity and the use of original instruments on the one hand, and figureheads such as Frans Brüggen, Marie Leonhardt and Paul Sacher on the other. But attention is also paid to evolutions in research WITHhods (e.g. ethnomusicology), shifting attitudes (religious versus aesthetic principles) and trends in theory and practice. The Movement’s story, however, becomes primarily a portrait of its champions and of the often surprising reasons for their rapturous

The pealing gradually grows to become an imposing ‘full peal’, in which all fourteen bells of the Dom Tower sound together, including the enormous Salvator from 1505. This happens only twice a year. Welcome to the early music city of Utrecht!

The Early Music Festival 2017 will start off with a bang! The opening evening is not just the first concert with artist in residence Lorenzo Ghielmi, but also the very first concert involving TivoliVredenburg’s new large Baroque organ! Soloists: Lorenzo Ghielmi, orgel Alice Rossi, soprano GiuSeppina Bridelli, alt Wolf Matthias Friedrich, bass

And who but Bach could provide the perfect soundtrack for that? With the splendid Prelude, Adagio and Fugue BWV 545/564,2 and the Aria variata we first get to hear the new arrival in a solo role. Then the organ, in concertante mode, enters into dialogue with the orchestra and solo voice in the cantata Geist und Seele wird verwirret. Finally, all the stops can be pulled out for a party worthy of Bach! The cantata Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild, composed for Reformation Day 1725, underlines the exuberant character of the occasion. hh h

By means of the Edict of Nantes the French King Henri IV – himself a protestant who had converted to Catholicism – managed to quieten down the religious conflicts in his country. But his grandson Louis XIV held a different view about the Huguenots: ‘My grandfather loved them, my father was afraid of them; I myself don’t love them and neither am I afraid of them.’ In 1685 the Sun King revokes the agreement with the Protestants. The result: a mass exodus of hundreds of thousands of Frenchmen heading north and to England. The programme presented by Ensemble Correspondances focuses on Louis’ power with regard to religion. He was the man who devised a ritual in which the king played as central a role as God himself. Music plays a crucial part in this power game, and we hear how the young Louis, together with Dumont, develops the new genre of the grand motet in order to underline this. In the second part of the concert we hear the grandly conceived music that we associate with the older Louis, as well as Charpentier’s Te Deum, which begins with the ‘Eurovision signature tune’. Whether Charpentier worked directly for the king or not, the piece was probably written for a military victory in 1692, which reveals to what a great extent religion, politics and art were intertwined. $

It is not so strange that the confirmed Lutheran J.S. Bach composed religious music with a Latin text: the Magnificat and the Missa Brevis were also sung in Protestant churches. However, Bach’s Mass in B minor belongs to some extent outside this context. It is more than merely music to be used in the liturgy: with its brilliant mix of different styles and techniques it demonstrates just what he was capable of, and all in all it was 35 years in the making. A business gift for some prince or monarch, or music for a Roman Catholic church consecration? In other words: a Catholic Bach? The objective has always remained a mystery, but that has not prevented it from becoming part of the canon of classical music. Your guides through this amazing universe are Lionel Meunier and Vox Luminis, who were artists in residence in 2014. Since then the Utrecht Early Music Festival is unthinkable without them! ---

In the best Baroque tradition, Hensen – winner of the International Carillon Improvisation Competition in 2015 – is rounding off his programme with an improvisation on Ein feste Burg, one of Luther’s most famous chorales. + Monday 28 August

John Browne, the star of the Eton Choirbook, made a particularly good name for himself with his compact and imaginative polyphony. ‘If God be for us, who can be against us?’ With this rallying cry the Catholic Church went to war against the Reformers in the mid-16th century. Whilst internally there was some fine-tuning of doctrine and liturgy going on, artists such as Bernini and Borromini were making the Counter-Reformation tangible. The musical counterpart of these showpieces was the euphonious polyphony of Palestrina and the Roman School. Of the post-Council of Trent composers Orazio Benevolo is without doubt one of the most sensational. His eight-choir Missa ‘Si Deus pro nobis’ is remarkably theatrical and is brimming with ingenious counterpoint. In a breathtaking evocation of a religious service in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi, the musicians make this age-old repertoire sparkle as in days of old. +++ +

Dance was a thorny subject in the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. Protestant ministers fulminated against dancing as a 'popish wickedness'. Wiens brood men eet, diens woord men spreekt (He who pays the piper calls the tune): this was the motto of many a composer in Reformation Europe. During the English Reformation many remained in the service of the same middle-class, noble, regal or religious employer, even when their religious convictions differed. This happened to the Catholic William Byrd, who in an Anglican England suddenly had to keep his head above water somehow. Out of necessity his Catholic oeuvre went ‘underground’ and was performed only in private – often even in secret. His instrumental consort music was however still played in public. Ironic, because this intimate chamber music was in fact intended for private performance. Masters of ceremony Skip Sempé and GiuSeppe Maletto direct the singers and consort players in a programme that contains, as well as Byrd’s Gradualia I, songs and instrumental works. The perfect counterpart to Byrd’s ‘music for cognoscenti’ is Richard Dering’s Cries of London, which transforms the sounds of the streets of London into music. c

Everything that Calvin found dreadful! Music and dance mean magic: that was something the French Renaissance king François I (14941547) also realized, and he managed to unite his people by means of military victories and artistic triumphs. Refined court spectacles – ‘Magnificences’ – acted as the display window of France’s musical opulence. In a colourful succession of scenes, a whole spectrum of entertainment would unfold like a fan, from short concerts of polyphony to allegorical ballets. For this Festival edition Jordi Savall has compiled a largescale homage to the Renaissance composer Heinrich Isaac, who died exactly 500 years ago. The story told by Savall begins in 1450 and ends with Luther’s death: we are thus presented with a colourful historical and musical fresco, which leads to the Reformation. Little is known about Isaac’s education and his earliest activities. He was probably Franco-Flemish, and we first catch up with him in Florence, where he lived for some considerable time and became a family friend of the powerful House of Medici. Isaac would later visit the most important cities of the Holy Roman Empire, as part of the retinue of Emperor Maximiliaan I. The wanderlust of this adventurous composer is reflected in a rich and multifaceted oeuvre, from which an exquisite selection of motets, instrumental works and German songs has been made for our delectation. !!! !

TivoliVredenburg, Cloud Nine 60 minutes

€ 5,00 Order number 68

Dutch Calvinism is considered to be a cold force with the sinfulness of man at its core. But this image is too limited. Not only was Calvin known as 'the Prince of the Renaissance', but Calvinism itself can also provide an impetus to create new forms of beauty, from the whitewashed walls of the churches to the impressive rhetoric of the fire-and-brimstone sermon and the many Reformation songs.

The new baroque organ in the Large Hall of TivoliVredenburg can be admired during the Festival. Today the French violinist Paulet will stand beside the organ. David against Goliath? Not at all: the combination of violin and large organ used to be common, and Baroque organs may be sonorous, but they do not relegate other instruments to the background. In a rhetorical tête-à-tête they juxtapose this music with works by Brade, Bruhns, Bach and Strungk.

‘Bach’s best suite’ – this is how the final Partita from Clavier-Übung I has been described. Like the other compositions from this first book, the work is designed as a suite consisting of various dances. In his sixth session of ‘keyboard practice’ Benjamin Alard pairs Partita 5 and 6 with the first duet from Clavier-Übung III: an ingenious ‘invertible’ fugue in which the parts pursue one another through a waterfall of scales!

In the 1660s Calvinism worked its way, via Antwerp and Ghent, into the Netherlands, where it soon became the faith associated with the revolt against Spain. In Reformed churches they sang in unison from Datheen’s translation of the Genevan Psalter, while Polyphonic settings by Le Jeune, Goudimel and Sweelinck were intended for domestic use. A song by Reynier Telle looks back on a hundred years of Reformation.

WHAT’S NEW? MAGGIE URQUHART THE VIOLONE AS A CONTINUO INSTRUMENT IN BACH'S MUSIC

Language: English.

TivoliVredenburg, Hertz 30 minutes The use of 16-foot and 8-foot violones in Bach’s music remains a controversial subject. It is not certain which types of violones were used or how they were used. Twenty-eight years ago, in his pioneering book ‘Bach’s Continuo Group’, Laurence Dreyfus proposed that three types of violone were used. In her doctorate Urquhart investigated how violones in Bach’s music might have sounded, and here she shares that information with us.

A journey on foot of 400 km - that is what Bach was willing to do to be in Lübeck to attend the Abendmusiken (Evening Music) of the legendary Dietrich Buxtehude. Buxtehude’s contemporaries idolized him, not only as an organist but also as a composer. The Nederlandse Bachvereniging is going to introduce you to some of his most beautiful and largescale cantatas. In Frohlocket mit Händen alle Völker an impressive array of musicians launches an enthusiastic appeal for peace. By contrast, Herzlich lieb hab’ ich Dich, o Herr is a sumptuous chorale setting with mysterious tremolo, and Nimm von uns Herr is a clever sequence of refrains with a memorable main melody. And then there’s also that irresistible ostinato in Jesu, meines Lebens Leben: guaranteed to become earworm of the day! The crowning glory of the programme will be the intimate Muss der Tod: a lamentation on the death of Buxtehude’s father, from whom he had inherited the musical gene. The choir and orchestra of the Nederlandse Bachvereniging will use TivoliVredenburg’s new large Baroque organ in the role of continuo instrument.

The music of anniversary boy Telemann is their dream playground, with virtuoso quartets and solo cantatas – including Glaubet, hoffet, leidet, duldet – which unfold as an intimate but expressive dialogue with God.

The commissioned work by the young Estonian Evelin Seppar is right up Det Norske Solistkor’s street: the ensemble has already notched up over two hundred premières.

MANFREDO KRAEMER TELEMANN’S FANTASIAS FOR SOLO VIOLIN

TivoliVredenburg, Hertz 60 minutes Together with the solo concerts of Rachel Brown, Philippe Pierlot and Francesco Corti, this violin recital creates an exquisite quadruple. And a fine homage to G.Ph. Telemann – the Baroque master who died 250 years ago. The genius of the man from Magdeburg leaps off every page: the Fantasias are little miracles of variation and contrast, rhetoric and melodic ingenuity.

Telemann is said to have composed fifty operas. Traces of twenty-nine can be found in documents and personal testimony. Only nine works have stood the test of time intact – a blistering outcome, given that Telemann is considered the most important composer of German opera of the eighteenth century. Soloist: Inga Kalna, soprano

In addition, the surviving works give you a taste for more. Orpheus, for example: a unique crossover between tragédie lyrique and opera seria. The arias juggle with different languages and styles to match them – typical of Telemann the chameleon. In a selection of these songs the Latvian soprano Inga Kalna appears as Orasia, queen of Thracia, who thanks to her passionate but irresponsible love for Orpheus ends up in a downward spiral of revenge. The interval is followed by the cantata Ino, in which Pomo d’Oro gives us a taste of Telemann at work at the age of 84: a successful mix of the Baroque and the galant style, with which he shows that he has always remained young at heart.

Corti rounds off this recital with works by Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach.

‘My swan song’ was how Victoria described his Officium Defunctorum. Victoria’s Office of the Dead was not only his last composition, but it also brought an era to an end. Before the Baroque era begins, this work briefly gives the ‘stile antico’ of the High Renaissance a new, modern look: tradition and innovation go hand in hand. Compagnie Musicale will provide a robustly resonating performance of this Counter-Reformation cathedral of sound.

During this Festival edition Christina Pluhar and the highly praised L’Arpeggiata team up with a couple from vocal royalty: soprano Nuria Rial and countertenor Philippe Jaroussky. For the first time the ensemble is focusing on repertoire from Protestant Germany, which enters into dialogue with Italian Counter-Reformation music. The result? An exciting journey of discovery that leads from German songs of Schütz and Bach to motets of Monteverdi, Cazzati and Sances. Halfway through we can relax and enjoy J.J. Fux’s exotic turqueries. The programme bears the title ‘Komm, süßer Tod’, after the song of the same name by Bach: a beautiful gem in which the prospect of a heavely hereafter brings peace and rest. With a hundred years of music in one stunning programme, this exquisite collective promises to demonstrate precisely why they are so admired, by astonishing us with the best the Baroque era has to offer.
