LOU JOHN has worked in publishing for many years. The Worry Jar is her debut picture book and was inspired by her love of collecting pebbles at the beach and by her daughter, who is now rather more grown up than Frida is in the story! She lives in Oxford.

JENNY BLOOMFIELD graduated with distinction from the MA in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art in 2019.

She is an avid sketch-booker and draws every day. She lives in Leeds.

‘Let’s make jam, today, Frida!’ said Granny. Frida smiled. She loved cooking. ‘You know, everybody has worries,’ said Granny as they tossed strawberries into a huge pan together, ‘even me! And worrying about them makes them worse.’ Frida and Granny made lots and lots of jam, and when they were done, Granny pulled a big empty jar out of her bag. ‘I’ve had an idea to help you with your worries,’ she said. ‘You could put your worry pebbles into this jar so that they don’t weigh you down any more.’ But Frida didn’t know how to stop worrying about her worries 278273_THE_WORRY_JAR_FIN.indd 18-19 29/09/2021

Kitty had come to the train station with her mum, dad, and little brother Max, to see the Red Rocket. The famous steam train would be arriving at six o’clock that evening on its recordbreaking journey to visit every station in the whole country in ten days.

Kitty looked at the station clock— it was five minutes to six. She held her dad’s hand tightly and stood on tiptoes to peep through the crowd.

Choo-woo! The Red Rocket let out another puff of steam.

Kitty crouched on top of the train, steadying herself with one hand. Her heart pounded. The train rattled and wobbled beneath her, but she kept her balance. She’d done it! All she had to do now was get inside to find Yuma and Pumpkin.

‘That’s a great idea!’ said Carlotta.

Dad put a cup of rose-blossom tea down in front of us all and I sipped mine carefully, being extra careful not to spill any over the side of the cup. Granny and Grandpa sat opposite, asking loads of questions about school. I was just telling them about my teacher, Miss Spindlewick, when I felt something silky brush against my legs.

‘Eee!’ I squealed, and slopped some of my tea onto the table cloth, leaving a bright pink stain on the spotless lace. Oh no! I felt my cheeks turn bright red. Dad stared pointedly at me and frowned. He waved his wand to make the stain disappear before Granny and Grandpa noticed. Luckily they were now busy talking to Wilbur about wizard school.

The key took them to a beautiful, sandy beach on a moonlit night. They could hear the sound of the waves.

Kipper saw something further up the beach. There was a large, dark shape on the sand. “What’s that?” he asked.

“Let’s investigate!” said Biff.

Where was the hedgehog trying to go?

What did Biff ask the hotel to do?

Why does the hotel manager say they can turn out the hotel lights when the baby turtles hatch?

Why do you think it is important to save the turtle?

When they got closer, Chip said, “Wow! It’s a huge sea turtle!”

An older girl was sitting nearby. “Please don’t get too close,” she whispered to the children.

The turtle was pushing sand into a hole with its back flippers.

“Why is it doing that?” asked Kipper quietly.

Chapter 3

Over the last 3.7 billion years, the ocean has changed from a superheated chemical ‘soup’ to a habitat full of living things. Along the way it has shaped and reshaped the air, land, and life, in and out of the water!

Scientists think life on Earth most likely began in the oceans. The first rains would have washed all kinds of chemicals into the oceans. A sudden boost of energy from a lightning storm caused simple chemicals such as water, hydrogen, ammonia, and methane to react together, and form more complicated molecules such as amino acids—the building blocks of living things. This idea has been tested and proven by scientists such as Cyril Ponnamperuma.

B U RP

CYRIL PONNAMPERUMA

Sri Lankan scientist who was one of the first to work out how life may have got started in Earth’s oceans.

In the 1970s, Cyril helped to work out that the first living things on the planet were tiny plankton, each made up of just one cell. Some of them evolved a mighty power—the ability to capture sunlight energy and use it to reassemble simple substances into food. This is called photosynthesis, and it’s a superpower they later passed on to plants.

Reshaping the planet

One of the waste products of photosynthesis is oxygen. Over time, phytoplankton burped out enough oxygen to completely change Earth’s atmosphere. All kinds of new living things evolved to use this new, oxygen-rich air, including us!

Waves and tides carry sediments from place to place. They may deposit sand on a shore and create a beach, or cause pebbles to drift away over time. They may smash sediments against cliffs, wearing the rock away, eroding and reshaping coasts over time.

ALSO IN THE SERIES

Beaches form from whichever sediments happen to be nearby. Black sands are made from volcanic rocks, broken apart by the churning of waves. The white sands of tropical beaches are made from dead coral pooped out by parrotfish!

DICTATORSHIP

In a dictatorship, the government’s power is in the hands of a single person who rules the nation. Other political parties are not allowed, and the people take no part in politics and have little freedom to say what they want.

In the city of Leipzig, a weekly meeting of ‘prayers for peace’ grew into an activist group that organized demonstrations to demand democracy (or free elections), freedom to travel, and free speech. In October 1989, thousands of protestors risked their lives by demonstrating in Leipzig’s streets, many carrying placards saying ‘Wir sind das volk’ (We are the people). The police were outnumbered, so they did not use force against the crowds. This inspired other protests around the country that helped to force the East German government out of power later that year.

978-0-19-278030-0

In 1903, decades of peaceful talks had not achieved results, so an activist named Emmeline Pankhurst started a new group called the Women's Social and Political Union, also known as the suffragettes. She believed that only extreme actions would make people change their minds about votes for women, and this was summed up in the motto,

‘Deeds not words’.

The suffragettes called on followers to take part in acts of violence and civil disobedience and their tactics included planting bombs, setting buildings on fire, breaking windows, and disrupting speeches. Many disagreed with their methods, but Emmeline argued that violence made headlines, drawing attention to their cause.

Speak like an activist DEMOCRACY

Democracy is rule by the people— a type of government where people can take part in the decisions that affect the way their country is run.

On 9 November 1989, officials opened the country’s borders with West Germany.

There were amazing scenes at the Berlin Wall where thousands of people celebrated by climbing on it, hammering chunks from it, and flooding through to the other side. Soon after this, the wall was torn down and the whole country was reunited, bringing democracy to East Germany.

7

Founded the suffragettes in Britain.

Almost 1,000 suffragettes, including Emmeline, were arrested and sent to prison where they went on hunger strike (a tactic where people protest by refusing to eat).

The First World War began in 1914 and Emmeline helped organize women to take on many of the jobs done by the men who were fighting. After the war, the contribution that women had made changed public opinion towards the women’s vote. Finally, in 1918, over fifty years after the first petition, middle- and upper-class women over 30 were given the vote. Ten years later, in 1928, just a few weeks after Emmeline died aged 69, this was reduced to age 21, in line with all men.

Simple machines

Nearly 2,500 years ago, a genius called Archimedes did something that his strongest friends couldn’t do (and the Greeks were a sporty lot—they even invented the Olympics!). He single into harbour using a compound pulley he had invented.

The compound pulley

The compound pulley, like all simple machines, works by changing the force that the user applies in some way. Its secret is that by pulling one rope a long distance fairly gently, another rope moves a far shorter distance, but much more forcefully.

W h a t i s E n e r g y ?

Science is all about simplifying the way the world works. One very simple but very scientific way to understand it is to say that the world is made of just two things: matter and energy. Matter includes most of the things you can see around you: solids like the earth, liquids like water, and gases like air. Energy is everything else, like light, heat, sound, and electricity.

Speak like a scientist

ENERGY

The word ‘energy’ comes from a word from ancient Greece, ‘energia’, which means ‘activity’. Energy is what you have to have in order to do work. When you whack a ball, you give it some energy.

Energy exists in many forms. Imagine a thunderstorm— as well as the light energy and sound energy of lightning and thunder, the falling raindrops and rushing wind in a storm have energy too: the energy of motion.

Zeus introduced Pandora to Prometheus’s brother Epimetheus (‘Hindsight’), along with a gift of a large jar that contained all the world’s troubles. Epimetheus forgot he’d been told never to accept any gifts from Zeus, and now it was too late: Pandora opened the jar and the troubles escaped, leaving only Hope still trapped inside when she slammed the lid shut. Is there now no hope, because Hope is shut in the jar? Or do we at least have hope, if nothing else?

Earth - diving and cosmic eggs

Right across the world there are tales of how a creator sent an ‘earth-diver’ into the primal waters to bring up little bits of mud and sand, which gradually formed dry land. In the oral tradition of the Ainu people of Japan, one variant of the creation story says that the earth-diver was a type of bird called a water wagtail.

a water wagtail

It used its wings to splash the waters and reveal little patches of ground, which it packed down using its feet and tail to form the islands where the Ainu live.

Speak like a mythologist

PANDORA’S BOX

The modern expression ‘to open a Pandora’s box’ means to do something that will cause lots of problems that you haven’t thought about. In the original story, Pandora didn’t have a box. She had a jar called a pithos in Greek, but a sixteenth century ce scholar called Erasmus made a mistake when he was doing a translation, and her container has been called a box ever since.

ALSO IN THE SERIES

The world was a much more interesting place with human beings in it. But the gods didn’t necessarily love the humans, and the humans would often try to trick the gods as they worked out how to deal with all the challenges that life brought them.

In the next chapter, we will explore the rich stories of some of the most amazing humans who lived in this world of myth and legend.

7

He pushed up half of the broken shell to form the heavens and used the bottom half to make the earth.

Then Ta’aroa made soil from his own skin, clouds from his insides, oceans, lakes, and rivers from his tears, mountain ranges from his bones, trees from his feathers, sea creatures from his guts, and the colours of the sky and rainbows from his blood.

Finally, he created children who hung the sun, moon, and stars in the sky, and helped to make more plants and animals. Ta’aroa then made the first people.

Ta’aroa

These creation stories are how people from various cultures explained how the world began. In the next chapter we can explore some intriguing tales that tell us how the gods made human beings.
