OXFORD READING LEVELS

Oxford Reading Levels and Phonics

Talk to your Education Consultant and have your Oxford Reading Levels questions answered or book an appointment at  your school.

y Span from the very early stages of reading in Foundation (Oxford Reading Level 1) all the way up to an advanced Year 6 reader’s level (Oxford Reading Level 20)

y Are matched to age-related expectations

y Adhere to clear levelling criteria

y Support reading progression

y Follows the Letters and Sounds Phonic Sequence aligning Oxford Reading Levels to Essential Letters and Sounds Australia (ELSA) and Oxford Decodable readers

Oxford Reading Levels have been used to develop both our newest phonics series as well as many of our well-loved ones.

All of Oxford’s decodable series (excluding Read Write Inc ) follow a structured phonic progression aligned to the Letters and Sounds phonic sequence. Oxford Reading Levels follow this sequence too, letting you know exactly when new letters and sounds will be introduced in our decodable books.

Comprehension Skills Framework

Developed by leading experts, the Comprehension Skills Framework below underpins our Oxford Reading for Comprehension Discover series (see pages 30–33), and Oxford Reading for Comprehension Decodables series, (see pages 34–35).

The framework supports the development and practice of key interactive comprehension strategies and the ongoing independent application of comprehension skills. The comprehension strategies outlined in the framework are the actions readers do in the moment of reading to help build meaning; the comprehension skills are practised after reading.

FINDING INFORMATION

Retrieving literal information from the text or pictures about characters, settings and overtly expressed feelings.

MAKING CONNECTIONS AND INFERENCES

Reading between the lines of the text, finding clues and building meaning from information that isn’t explicitly stated in the text.

UNDERSTANDING VOCABULARY

Identifying the meaning of words and phrases.

ELSA: Essential Letters and Sounds Australia

An easy to implement, evidence-based phonics program built for Australian schools

Program overview

Essential Letters and Sounds Australia (ELSA) is an evidence-based whole-class systematic synthetic phonics program for Foundation through Year 2. Phonetic progression within the program is aligned to Letters and Sounds

ELSA gets students decoding words from the very first week of teaching them grapheme‑phoneme correspondences (GPCs) in a clear and engaging way. As they master more GPCs, their reading fluency and speed improve, turning them into confident, proficient readers.

Evidence of impact

ELSA has been adapted for Australian educators and learners from a very successful program, Essential Letters and Sounds, developed by Oxford University Press (OUP) in the United Kingdom (UK), which has been validated by the UK Department for Education (DfE), and which is currently being used by more than 1000 UK schools.

ELSA lessons

ELSA lessons follow a gradual release of responsibility teaching model – I Do, We Do, You Do. The lessons are simple and consistent and have been specifically designed to reduce cognitive load.

ELSA lessons take 25–45 minutes, 5 days a week, 36 weeks of the year in Foundation and Years 1 and 2. Every lesson has a front-of-class presentation which includes all the content required to deliver effective phonics lessons with ease and fidelity.

Essential Letters and Sounds has taken all the stress out of planning phonics, all the hard work has been done, and I’m ready to teach!

– Classroom Teacher 99% of teachers reported that Essential Letters and Sounds supported them to deliver consistent and structured phonics teaching to a moderate or significant extent in a 2023 impact study

On-demand training

ELSA provides online, on-demand training to ensure that teachers are well-prepared and confident in implementing ELSA in their classrooms. All teachers receive the same high-quality instruction which can be revisited whenever they need a refresher or encounter a new challenge. This allows maximum flexibility for schools and teachers and provides the highest level of support at an affordable price.

y Online, on-demand training available to review at any time

y Over 35 training videos that cover every aspect of the program

y Presenters with extensive classroom and coaching experience

Interventions

ELSA offers a system of support to ensure that students ‘keep up’ rather than ‘catch up’. Students who show signs of struggling are quickly targeted for an in-lesson intervention which allows the teacher to address learning gaps as they arise. Students who need more intensive support can be provided with a one-on-one intervention to help overcome specific challenges including:

y GPC Recognition

y Oral Blending

y Blending For Reading

Progress monitoring assessments

ELSA provides frequent progress monitoring assessments so that any gaps in students’ knowledge can be quickly identified and closed. ELSA has three types of assessment:

y Progress Monitoring Assessments F–1

– Non-verbal Progress Monitoring Assessments

y Diagnostic Assessment

y Year 1 Phonics Screening Check Practice Assessment

y Year 2 Spelling Assessments

Students are assessed on their GPC knowledge and ability to read in and out of context using both real and pseudo words (i.e. non-words).

Following this, teachers are supported with examining and analysing assessment data to inform the next steps for each student and the class as a whole, and decide which interventions, if any, are needed.

Students will read one book in pairs during the explicit teaching weeks (one book between two students), and two or more books in pairs across each review week (one book between two students).

# Early Adopter discount applies to schools adopting Essential Letters and Sounds as their Phonics Program. Speak to your Sales Consultant for more information.

A note on student reading for Foundation Weeks

In Foundation Weeks 31–36, Phase 5 graphemes are first introduced to students. We recommend students shouldn’t be reading books containing these graphemes until they are taught again in Year 1. So, for these Weeks we suggest students read the Essential Blending Books 18–23 (included in the ELSA eLibrary †) and read the earlier print books in the above Foundation Pack. You can also consult our Decodable Readers map for our many other OUP decodable titles matched to each week of the ELSA program, this document is available in your ELSA Online Teaching Subscription. Week 35 is the exception, as it is a Review week. The Week 35 title Adopting a Cat reviews Phases 3 and 4.

† ELSA eLibrary School Subscription is a separate purchase.

Read Write Inc. Phonics

Transforming reading progress for every student in every school for Years F–4

Reading and writing right from the start

Read Write Inc. Phonics provides a systematic and consistent approach to transforming your teaching of reading and writing.

It develops students’ reading, writing, spoken language, vocabulary, grammar and spelling in a fully integrated way, to raise literacy standards and spark a lifelong love of reading.

Features:

y Integrated comprehension, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and handwriting means that Read Write Inc. is more than just a phonics program and helps develop key literacy skills for every student.

1. Assessment

Students are assessed and grouped according to their phonic knowledge. Each student is then taught at the level of their phonic knowledge to ensure quick progress.

5. Levelled progression

Ongoing assessment means that any struggling students are picked up the moment they fall behind and if necessary given intensive one-to-one tutoring to catch up fast. Groups are adjusted regularly so all students make the best progress.

y Includes a large range of matched decodable Storybooks and Book Bag Books, for both fiction and non-fiction, to increase reading fluency.

y Other resources include flashcards, posters, word cards, Handbooks, online teaching resources and eBooks to ensure you have everything you need to teach effectively.

Read Write Inc. Training

Accredited Ruth Miskin Training for Read Write Inc.  is available to support your staff with the full implementation of the program. The training is matched to the needs and requirements of your school and is delivered by an outstanding trainer who will show you how to teach effectively and confidently using Read Write Inc. Phonics

145 lively, fully decodable storybooks and 35 non-fiction titles

2. Teaching sounds

The 44 sounds and corresponding letters are introduced and taught systematically.

4. Developing reading and writing

Students read a series of levelled decodable texts, both fiction and non-fiction, and complete integrated writing activities including spelling, grammar, vocabulary and handwriting practice.

Take home reading

3. Teaching words

Students learn to blend sounds to read words. Then they use short ‘ditties’ to practice early reading and writing before being taught more letter-sound correspondences.

For extra practice at home, teachers can send home the black and white versions of the Storybooks and full-colour fiction Book Bag Books, to reinforce students’ classroom learning. This ensures the books sent home are matched to the phonics students are practising in class.

This program has had the greatest impact on learning that I have ever seen.

Read Write Inc. Comprehension

A Year 2 Comprehension program from Ruth Miskin

Read Write Inc. Comprehension, written by Ruth Miskin, is a 20-week program that provides a transition from Read Write Inc. Phonics to Read Write Inc. Literacy and Language

The program:

y Uses the key teaching strategies in Read Write Inc. Phonics to maintain momentum and student progress.

y Develops students’ reading fluency and comprehension of fiction and non fiction texts.

y Improves students’ writing by developing their vocabulary, grammar and spelling.

Flying Start to Literacy: Phonics

Common sounds of consonants and vowels

Flying Start to Literacy: Phonics follows an explicit and systematic sequence of skills and knowledge from common sounds of consonants and vowels to less common letter-sound correspondences.

There are three modules and seven units organised into teaching units that contain lesson plans, reviews and an overview of the accompanying decodable texts.

Decodable Texts

… support each phonic focus taught in  the Teacher Resource Books

Exciting, engaging decodable texts match the teaching sequence and support the students as they develop fluency by providing practice at decoding and word recognition.

Module One: Common sounds of consonants and vowels

This Module consists of Units One–Three and focuses on common sounds of consonants and vowels. The 30 illustrated texts in Module One support the practice of the letters and sounds and selected high utility words.

The module includes:

y Teacher Resource Book

y The Big Book of Rhymes

y Alphabet Cards

y Decodable Texts × 30: 10 texts per unit

Module Two: Double letters, adjacent consonants and long vowels

This Module consists of Units Four–Five and focuses on double letters, adjacent consonants and long vowels. In Modules Two and Three, the texts are paired as Informative and Narrative – and are read in sequence.

The module includes:

y Teacher Resource Book

y Decodable Texts × 20: 10 texts per unit

Module Three: Less common letter sounds

This Module consists of Units Six–Seven and focuses on less common letter sounds. In Modules Two and Three, the texts are paired as Informative and Narrative – and are read in sequence.

The 70 engaging, decodable texts follow the same sequence for the independent practice of newly learnt skills.

The module includes:

y Teacher Resources

y Decodable Texts × 20: 10 texts per unit

Flying Start to Literacy: Phonics

The Big Book of Rhymes … Entertaining. Engaging. Supportive.

y The Big Book of Rhymes is used with the teaching lessons in Module One (Units One−Three). A rhyme supports the alphabet letter-sound introduced to your students in each lesson.

y The Big Book of Rhymes reimagines a selection of traditional and contemporary rhymes, with each rhyme supported by engaging illustrations. The rhymes develop an enjoyment of language while introducing a rich vocabulary.

Alphabet Cards … Clear. Concise.

Supportive.

y Accurate and automatic recall of the names of the letters in the alphabet, both upper case and lower case, is a focus of Module One.

y Letter names can be learnt by singing ABC songs. Songs and chants are included in the Module One Teacher Resource Book.

y The Flying Start to Literacy: Phonics Alphabet Cards support revision and practice of the alphabet. Each Alphabet Card features an upper-case and lower-case letter, a picture and a word for each letter sound.

Teacher Resource Books

… offer structure and support for the explicit teaching of phonics.

y The Teacher Resource Books provide teachers with explicit instruction using lesson plans, review lessons, assessment tasks and consolidation activities.

y Each lesson facilitates the explicit teaching of oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, morphology and high-utility words around the one phonic focus.

y Writing instruction is also included in each lesson.

y All the support required is contained in the reproducible resources that support the learning in each unit (also downloadable at FSTLphonics.com.au)

y Assessment is built into the program to organise your students for learning, and to monitor their progress.

Build Literacy Learning

A supportive, explicitly taught, structured literacy program that builds young readers’ skills and knowledge

Build Literacy Learning aligns with the science of reading and reflects the findings of key research reviews and national enquiries into teaching reading.

When is it needed?

It is the follow on from phonics, when decoding skills have developed and students are reading words with less common letter sounds. They are building automaticity and are becoming skilled readers. This is when students need to further develop their literacy skills with engaging and conceptually-rich texts.

What is needed?

At this stage, readers need to grow and expand their abilities – fluency and comprehension in particular – and build knowledge about their world. They need to build a body of knowledge through a deeper and wider view of particular topics. For books that are rich in content, engaging and enlightening, you need Build Literacy Learning

Why are Build Literacy Learning books right for your students who have finished with their initial decodable texts?

The collections of books in Build Literacy Learning contain words with letter–sound correspondences that students have already learnt. Therefore, they are ideal for students to use to apply their phonics knowledge and practise their skills. The books will support students to build automaticity and become skilled readers.

How do skilled readers Build Literacy Learning?

Young students need explicitly taught, relatable texts that build on their existing knowledge to create new knowledge networks. They need the Build Literacy Learning program.

All the books are paired, and each pair is supported by a Lesson Plan for each book. The books with the Lesson Plans form a Text Study Unit. Each Text Study Unit provides explicit teaching and learning opportunities related to the

and content in the pair of books the students are reading.
