The set of integers includes positive whole numbers, negative whole numbers and zero. Negative integers are less than zero in value and are always preceded by a negative sign, −, placed directly before the first digit. Positive integers are greater than zero in value and can be represented using a positive sign, +. The positive sign can also be left out. increasing value

positive integers
In the real world, negative numbers are used to represent quantities that lie on a scale that goes below zero. A sign is used to indicate direction relative to the reference point of zero. For example, a negative temperature indicates that the temperature has dropped below the reference point of 0°.
