Notes from the Supervisor’s Office I’d like to welcome all of the readers of Our Towne Guilderland to 2011, and to once again express my gratitude to publisher Lowell Knapp for providing the Supervisor’s Office with the opportunity to stay in touch with Guilderland residents through the use of this column. I believe that is important for our residents to be informed about what’s happening with Town affairs, and this is one way to achieve that goal. I would also recommend that readers check in from time to time at our official website, www.townofguilderland.org. The site is updated continuously, and contains all sorts of information on how different parts of Town government work, as well as current event information and downloadable forms for a variety of uses. You can also use this site to sign up for e-mail updates on agendas and minutes of the Guilderland Town Board and other boards and committees. Unfortunately, the tough economy is persisting into 2011 across the nation, the state, and the region. While we are all hopeful for a rebound in the year ahead, we are doing our best at the Town level to keep down the cost of local government in order to limit the tax burden imposed on our residents. Guilderland’s 2011 Town budget once again contains no increase in the Town tax rate, yet continues to maintain the level of government services that we believe are what our residents want and need to maintain the quality of life in our community. Guilderland’s ability to effectively strike a balance between the need for services and sensitivity to the tax burden borne by residents was significantly enhanced in 2011 through a high level of cooperation between the Town workforce and the Town administration. The willingness

n He

of Town employees to forego increases in salary rates for 2011 made a significant difference as we worked to hold the line on the Town tax rate, and we are pleased that our workforce has shown such a high level of awareness and sensitivity regarding the financial stresses that are impacting so many of their neighbors. We believe that this was a clear demonstration of responsible citizenship on their part, and we are gratified by their willingness to work with us through these challenging financial times. I am sure that many of our residents will be looking for affordable recreational opportunities close to home this winter, and Guilderland’s park system has a number of these for you to choose from. Cross-country skiing will be available in two locations. Weather permitting, there will be groomed trails available at Western Turnpike Golf Course, while Tawasentha Park and the Winter Recreation Area offer the opportunity for skiing along the ungroomed hiking trails. Ski rentals are available for $7 on weekends at the Western Turnpike Pro Shop. Residents who snowshoe can use the trails throughout Tawasentha Park. A limited number of snowshoe rentals are available at a cost of $5 at the Parks Office on Route 146 during the week and at the Western Turnpike Pro Shop on weekends. We ask that you refrain from snowshoeing on the golf course, though. As always, the sledding hill in the Winter Recreation Area is

open, and gets plenty of use after every snowfall. Golf is always on the minds of some of our residents, even when it is cold and snowy outside. This is the time of year when golfers may want to think about obtaining or renewing a seasonal membership at the Town’s Western Turnpike Golf Course. Memberships offer the opportunity for regular players to get out on the course at a very reasonable rate, In addition, early-bird discounts on membership rates are available until February 1. Check the Town website or call the Parks and Recreation Office for more information. Current information about the recreational activities available in our Guilderland parks is available on the Town website, by calling the Parks Department Office at 4563150 during the week, or by calling the Western Turnpike Pro Shop at 456-0786 on the weekend. On behalf of the Town of Guilderland and all its employees, I’d like to offer my best wishes for the New Year to all our residents.

Q. Dr. Oshins, at what age should my children have their first visit to the dentist? A. We typically have patients bring their child in between the ages of one and two to get acclimated to the office. We recommend coming in at 3 years old for the first exam. Going to the dentist can be scary for your child. Try to make it a positive experience. Talk with your child about how big they are, now that they are old enough to visit the dentist. At this age we are laying the foundation for good oral hygiene habits. Early visits also give us the opportunity to detect any problems and to prevent potential problems in the future.

Keep Your New Year’s Resolution Now that the New Year has come and gone many of us have charged ourselves with following through with the resolutions we have made. If you did make one, it probably has to do with improving your body in a way related to fitness or diet. The best way to complete your commitment to your improvement is with your children. If diet is your promise then now is the time to improve the way your whole family eats. Doing this will give you the sense of unity you desire and the togetherness your family needs. During a time when child obesity is on the rise, this is the perfect time to help your children make the right choices by leading by example. Keeping your whole family involved will give you the motivation to continue. If you are promising to improve through exercise it is also best to do so through a family effort. That is because the unity you will feel will help you stay on the path you have chosen. There are many activities that a family can participate in together. One of them is martial arts training. Together you can improve your physical fitness, agility, flexibility and self defense skills, while developing better, stronger character and family togetherness.

The family program at Guilderland Martial Arts is very strong, fun and an absolutely delightful community of people who by and large attest to improved performance at school and work, or at least increased focus or coping methods. That is not to say that everyone should start the martial arts; it is an option that fits the needs of many families in our community. If you have ever thought about martial arts training, then it is worth a try to see what it is like. You will find it more fun and less intimidating than you might have thought. It truly is for everyone, but not everyone is ready for it. What ever you chose, choose health and fitness with your family. Q A 

with Kathy Burbank, Executive Director

Guilderland Chamber of Commerce

Q. What year did the business start? A. The Chamber was officially incorporated in 1972, but was active as a group of businesses wanting to promote Guilderland and help educate fellow businesses for many years before that. It is a membership organization now with about half of Guilderland’s businesses as members. Q. Where are you located and were you always in the same location? A. The chamber is located at the intersection of Western and 155, in Star Plaza. We started as a kiosk with local information at the end of the Northway, and have moved a few times. Most people remember the location by the Stuyvesant Plaza pond the best. Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. I have been with the chamber for 3.5 years, after working in the non-profit management field for 12 years. I live in Guilderland with my husband who grew up here and five kids, and we all live “chamber life” daily. Guilderland is a small town, and my family interacts with member businesses and uses town amenities all the time.

good sponsor opportunities. For a team or even a nonprofit like American Cancer Society, belonging to the chamber connects them to businesses that they may not otherwise get to know. Q. What do you love most about the business? A. I love the variety of things that we do; from business programs on tax issues to our charity silent auction, every day is different at the chamber. I am a problem solver, and look forward to coming to work every day to see what my new challenge is going to be.

Q. Are you known for anything special? A. Over the past 39 years, the chamber has been responsible for many events that promote the town, and connect the town, community, and businesses. You may remember Gelder Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the Day, Pig-Tacular, the Bicentennial Parade, and now we have business? Souped Up on Guilderland and Restaurant Week. A. In tough times, businesses may not see our membership fee as a priority, and they discontinue membership with Q. Are you doing anything new? us. My biggest challenge is to get all businesses to see the A. As the economy slowed over the past few years, we have value of a local chamber that provides local businesses with been doing events and programs that involve sectors of industry so that we can promote them locally, like Restaurant the tools they need to operate. Many businesses could not survive without our health insurance program, our Week, Ladies Night Out Health and Wellness event, and free or low cost local marketing or educational programs. the Guilderland Home Improvement Expo last year. We are Continuing membership in this chamber is crucial to also working hard right now to help our members promote promoting shopping local and a local economy. themselves and teach them how we can help them. Q. What hours are you open? A. The chamber hours are 8:30-4:30, but the staff goes to evening events and meetings as well as weekend events that our members are having. Q. Do you sponsor any local teams, if so which ones? A. We help our member teams and organizations like Pop Warner, Guilderland Youth Soccer, and Lacrosse identify 14

Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. The community should know that we have local business information and a directory, visitors information and maps, and a variety of resources at our office, not just for businesses but for anyone; schools, residents, non-profits. They should also know that if they know anyone who owns a business in Guilderland, they should start at the chamber.

HOW TO GET YOUR HOME SOLD IN JUST 23 DAYS! John and Mary had never felt more frustrated in their life. Here it was, almost 3 months since they listed the house, and no buyer. If they didn’t sell soon, John would lose the job offer he wanted so badly. They assumed that hiring a real estate agent would be the right thing to do, to sell the house quickly. They figured that a professional would be able to get the highest price, in the shortest period of time. Listen to what happened. The first agent they hired told them their house was so beautiful, it would sell immediately. (No such luck.) Weeks went by and produced nothing but empty promises. Then their agent told them they needed to spend $3,500 to “fix-up” the house in order to get it sold. After they spent the money, there were still no firm offers, even though everyone told them that “the house looked nice”. A few days later, Mary happened to be reading a magazine that offered a FREE REPORT called “How to Sell Your Home Quickly, At Your Price”, and she sent away for the report. She discovered a unique marketing strategy that wasn't being used by their first agent. After their listing agreement expired, John and Mary began applying the simple tips outlined in the report and... 23 days later their house sold! What Mary and John learned wasn’t any kind of magic. What they learned is there are specific techniques that can be used to sell a home quickly, for the highest price. But for some reason, some real estate professionals are unaware of them, or don’t make use of them. To get a free copy of this report, just call the free recorded message line below, and a copy of the report will be sent to you. In fact, we are so certain our systems will be successful we will guarantee it. Ask about the exclusive Clancy Real Estate Guaranteed home sale program! INDEPENDENT STUDIES & PATIENT SURVEYS FAVOR CHIROPRACTIC CARE FOR BACK AND NECK PAIN. RESEARCH SHOWS WIDE USAGE AND SATISFACTION By Dr. Jennifer L. Noonan, Spinal Wellness Center, Western Ave, Guilderland

80% of all people will experience back pain in their lifetime. That is an irrefutable fact. With sedentary jobs and obesity being so prevalent, this number is expected to rise. Over the years, study after study has shown chiropractic to be the most effective form of treatment for back pain of all kinds, having greater long-term benefits than any other treatment. Its great to have all these studies on our side, but what do our patients have to say? A study, which surveyed more than 14,000 consumers, was conducted by the Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center. According to the report, the respondents tried a variety of treatments and rated them on how helpful and satisfied they were with the results. The conclusion? “Eighty-eight percent of those who tried chiropractic manipulation said it helped a lot, and 59 percent were ‘completely’ or ‘very’ satisfied with their chiropractor.” Chiropractic works and people like it, that is the bottom line. Conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, facet syndrome, whiplash, and chronic mechanical pain syndrome are all treated successfully in my office. Many times, chiropractic is the only treatment to give significant broad-based long-term relief. One of the reasons for our success is that we treat the cause (the spinal dysfunction and nerves) rather than covering up the problem with drugs which, in essence just ignores it and allows it progress further. With a variety of manual and non-force at my disposal I also treat patients according to their specific condition. No “cookie cutter” care. I urge people to at least come in for a consultation and get information on their specific problem. What have you got to lose other than your pain? For more information please schedule a complimentary consultation by calling 869-3415

Dr. Noonan resides here in Guilderland with her husband David, who is also a Chiropractor, and her sons Connor, Noah and Aiden. She is a graduate of Guilderland High School, SUNY Cortland and New York Chiropractic College. She has served families in the community with chiropractic for over 18 years.

Call 869-3415 for a consultation.
