Notes from the Supervisor’s Office As winter winds down here in Guilderland, residents should think ahead to some of the recreational opportunities offered in the Town in the warmer weather. Local recreational offerings are always attractive, and rising gas prices make them even more of a bargain for residents. Tawasentha Park offers two picnic pavilions that can accommodate groups of various sizes. An availability calendar can be found on the Guilderland website, www. townofguilderland.com. Reservations for pavilion use may be set up by calling the Parks Department office at 456-3150. Annual memberships for seasonal play at Western Turnpike Golf Course are available for residents and non-residents alike. People who play on a regular basis will realize a considerable cost saving by purchasing an individual, couple, family, or junior membership at Western Turnpike, with extra discounts provided for Town of Guilderland residents. Please call the Pro Shop at 456-0786 or the

Parks Department office at 456-3150 for additional information about membership. The course opening date is typically in early April, but is ultimately determined by seasonal weather conditions. The Town Board, at its February 2 meeting, approved the dedication of 191 acres of land owned by the Town of Guilderland to the Albany Pine Bush Preserve. The land, which is located in the East Lydius Street area of the town, has been acquired over the years, primarily as open space dedications provided by developers in connection with various projects. The Town will retain legal ownership of the land under the dedication arrangement, but management will now be handled by the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission, which works with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to preserve the rare inland pine barren ecosystem of the Preserve and to protect Guilderland’s natural resource base. The Preserve Commission has the technical expertise and the staff resources to efficiently manage this land and to enforce existing environmental

protection regulations at no cost to the Town. This dedication will expand the total acreage of the Albany Pine Bush Preserve by approximately six percent to a total of nearly 3,300 acres in the Towns of Guilderland and Colonie, and in the City of Albany. The pace of things in town is slow at this time of year, but spring really is just around the corner. Next month’s notes will include reminders about our summer recreation programs for Guilderland’s youth, our springtime Household Hazardous Waste Day program, and all the other things we associate with the return to warmer weather. Kenneth Runion, Town Supervisor

Message from the Chamber... Dear Readers-I am sure many of you, like me, have been following the current state and local issues; the State Budget, the school district budget deficit, the possible closing of Thacher Park‌ and I am even trying to keep up with federal health care reform. The common theme that all of these issues have is that our economic slowdown has aected every aspect of our lives at this point. I think we as a society and a town can learn some things from these hard mes; much as our parents or grandparents did during the great depression. At the chamber, I also see businesses struggling to hang on through this recession and we are helping them as much as we can. Over the last few years, we have promoted “stayca oning,â€? ea ng local through restaurant week, shopping local, and have highlighted local blessings like fall apple season and more! Stay tuned, because we are organizing a “contract localâ€? home improvent show right here in Guilderland—and admission will be free! More on that in the next issue. Upcoming business seminars and events: Business A er Hours Mixer-Tues. WRIST PAIN? IT MIGHT BE A NECK PROBLEM By Dr. Jennifer L. Noonan, The Spinal Wellness Center Pain in your wrist must mean there’s a problem in your wrist right? Not necessarily. Chiropractors take a larger view and often have more effective results with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) by looking not only at the wrist, but the spine as well.

NOW ENROLLING!

The Maria College

Campus School A PRIVATE PRESCHOOL AND DEVELOPMENTAL PRE-K PROGRAM

Building strong foundations, shaping tender hearts.

In a review of medially confirmed CTS, it was discovered that the majority of patients examined also had concurrent problems in the cervical spine. Chiropractors have been effectively treating CTS for decades, preventing the risky use of drugs and often preventing unnecessary injections and surgery. We take a fundamentally different approach than traditional care. A chiropractor knows that if your hands have pain and tingling, the first place to look is your neck. That is where the nerve roots which traverse the arm and hand originate. Cervical adjustments, which are proven safer than commonly used over-the-counter anti-inflammatories, remove the compression at the nerve root and make a full recovery from CTS more likely. The other critical component of effective treatment is the adjustment to the carpal bones, which become fixated, contributing to irritation within the tunnel. I can tell you from years of personal experience with this common disorder, it is extremely effective. I have even treated cases where the patient has had surgery, which failed, but they went on to recover with the get-to-the-cause approach that I take. Several years ago I also began using cold laser therapy as part of my treatment protocol for CTS. It works on the principal of bio-stimulation, which facilitates cell repair and regeneration. It works particularly well on nerve-related pain such as CTS. I wish all patients with CTS would try chiropractic first, drugs second, and surgery as an absolute last resort. The Guilderland Chamber of Commerce Women’s Business Council chooses an annual charity to benefit from the proceeds of several fundraising events including its annual silent auc on, and this year, the group chose The Guilderland Public Library because of its far reaching eects on women, children and families in the area. The silent auc on; this year to be held on May 5 (Cinco de Mayo!) at Colonie Golf and Country Club, is the 4th annual event, and the one-of-a-kind auc on items usually generate between $3,000 and $4,000 for the lucky non-profit. Auc on items are already coming in, and include numerous restaurant gi cer ficates, exclusive jewelry and art, themed baskets, and even a Cape Cod vaca on home!! The event is usually sponsored by CDPHP, Key Bank’s Key 4 Women, and many other businesses, and a ended by 80-100 people. Tickets are only $35 for this fun networking-for-a-cause event! The Library was chosen because of its numerous programs that benefit women and children in our community; the Disney Family Fun Night, the Baby Expo, and many women’s programs oered by the library that are not funded by taxpayer dollars. The Women’s Business Council looks to support and promote women in business and programs that benefit them in the Guilderland area. The Guilderland Public Library is one of the key community organiza ons in Guilderland, serving all residents of Guilderland, NY and the surrounding areas with a variety of adult, youth, and children’s programs and fun community ac vi es. The Guilderland Public Library has 29,786 members who rely on it as a resource to our community. The members and community residents also use the library as a central gathering space that connects many dierent aspects of the community together.

When Kids Want To Quit by Bob Esposito Capital Northeast Mar al Arts

Children quit for all different reasons. Some children feel bored while others feel overwhelmed. Some children have unrealis c expecta ons that they are going to be performing the kind of mar al arts, gymnas cs, swimming, or other sport that they see “in the movies” or in the Olympics on the first day that they a end. Other children see “today’s ac vity” simply as another ac vity that they do—easily interchanged with football, basketball or dance lessons– so why s ck with one thing? S ll other children feel invisible to the instructor, picked on, misunderstood or scared when they take class. The first major reason for qui ng is the instance of a curriculum-based clash. Simply put, when children feel overwhelmed or under-challenged, they will want to quit. A er all, when something is too difficult or too easy, it isn’t fun anymore! The over-challenged child may feel as though he cannot keep up, catch up, or otherwise progress at the pace that the other children in class are progressing. The underchallenged child may feel uninterested, disinterested, or just plain bored. You can determine this if your child would rather play with friends than go to class or fights you on prac cing when they used to find it exci ng to do so. Whatever it is, there is clearly a clash between the child’s learning level and the curriculum they’re learning at this me. These children will surely start looking for other ways, whether it is in football, hockey, dance or marching band, to fill their me and hold their interest – some mes, they just keep moving from ac vity to ac vity looking for something to hold their interest. 18

It’s important that we delve into this issue with our child because it’s easy enough to move our children to a different class, get them extra help, or have them take some extra classes to address this issue. The second major reason for qui ng is the case of the value-based clash. If you, as a parent, don’t value what the child is learning at their current ac vity, the child will o en sense it and want to quit. For example, if you regard their current ac vity, like mar al arts or gymnas cs, as “just another stop on the way between football and piano,” the child will too. A er all, a child will want to quit something if it has li le or no perceived value to the parent. Children tend to take their cues from their parents— so when Mom and Dad do not care, neither will they. As parents, we need to make sure to check our own a tude when determining why our children might be qui ng. If we can adjust our own behavior and a tude, our children will too. The third major reason for qui ng is the o en elusive personalbased clash. When children or

parents feel uncomfortable at an ac vity, uncomfortable around a coach or teacher, uncomfortable around another child or another parent who is there at the same me, or undervalued by staff, they will likely want to quit. Perhaps there has been a misunderstanding or a miscommunica on. Boundaries may have been breached or bu ons may have been pushed in some way. Perhaps the most common personal clash is when the child perceives that the teacher or coach doesn’t “like him” or “care about him”. It’s vital to find out if something happened between your child and another person in the class so that the issue can be addressed and any misunderstandings can be cleared up. Bob Esposito is the owner of Capital Northeast MarƟal Arts. His school is located at 1811 Western Ave. in Guilderland. He currently holds the rank of 3rd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and 3rd Degree Black Belt in Hapkido. Guilderland Public Library Receives Large Grant to Support Adult Literacy GUILDERLAND, NY, The Guilderland Public Library is one of eleven libraries and library systems statewide which will be ge ng help from the New York State Library to support adult literacy library projects, New York State Librarian Bernard Margolis announced yesterday. The Library will receive a total of $27,889 over two years, one of the largest program grants the Library has ever received. “New York State’s Adult Literacy Library Services grants help adult students and their families use library resources to con nue their educa on and develop workforce skills,” said Mr. Margolis. “The Guilderland Public Library and its project partner, Literacy New York Greater Capital Region, are thrilled with this grant,” said Maria Buhl, Adult Services Librarian at the Library. “Given the financial constraints we’re all working under, this funding couldn’t come at a be er me. We’ll be able to develop new methods of adult literacy instruc on to reach even more members of our community who want to learn or improve their English skills. It’s con nued proof of the tremendous value of libraries and their community partners.” The money will be used for a “Team Up for Literacy” campaign that will ul mately train volunteers to teach language and life skills to adult learners. The Library and Literacy Literacy New York Greater Capital Region are developing a model training program for small-group instruc on in which two or three tutors will work together with classes of six to ten adult basic literacy or English language learners to refine the program. The Library is holding an orienta on session for prospec ve “Team Up for Literacy” volunteers on Tuesday, March 9, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Addi onal sessions will also take place at the Library. To register for the program, please call Literacy New York Greater Capital Region at 518-452-3382. For more informa on about the grant program, see h p://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/literacy/ index.html or contact Cassandra Artale, Library Development Specialist, New York State Library / Division of Library Development, 518-474-1479 or cartale@mail.nysed.gov. Mango: A whole new flavor in language learning The Guilderland Public Library (along with Voorheesville and Bethlehem Public Libraries) is now offering online access to a great new language-learning tool: Mango Languages! Mango features a fun way to start learning a new language or to brush up on old skills. Best of all, it’s free! Guilderland Public Library patrons can access the Mango system through the Library’s website at www.guilpl.org, and then entering the number on the back of their library cards, Guilderland patrons have instant access to learning tools for a wealth of languages, including Spanish, French, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Mandarin Chinese, Greek, Italian, and Russian . 22 languages in all! Mango continues to add languages to their list. The English for Speakers of Other

Languages (ESOL) component feature 14 modules, tailored to the user’s native language. For example, there is English for Vietnamese speakers, and English for Korean speakers. With Mango, users create a personal profile and keep track of their progress through the lessons, picking up right where they left off. The colorful, self-paced instruction includes images, visuals, high quality sound, and pronunciation help. The interactive system puts the focus on conversation, but also includes grammar concepts and discussions of cultural differences. “If an individual wanted to buy a oneyear subscription to Mango, it would cost $345, so the Library’s providing this free service is a great value to our patrons,” said Margaret Lanoue, head of the Library’s Adult Reference

ZZZ 8SVWDWH5HKDE FRP

department. “And,” she added, “it can be used for multiple languages.” To use Mango Languages, go to the Guilderland Public Library website at www.guilpl.org, and use the icon, Or choose the Adult tab and select “Databases and Research”; then choose Languages. The Guilderland Public Library is located at 2228 Western Avenue, Guilderland. Mark Your Calendars Now for Baby Palooza Baby Palooza, the Guilderland Public Library’s first-ever fair focused exclusively on the needs, wants, and comforts of new and soon-to-be parents, will be held in the Library’s Helderberg Room on Saturday, March 20, from 11 am to 2 pm. Parents of newborns have many questions about their new roles. The library along with local and community organizations are putting together this event to give workshops, presentations, and demonstrations about services new parents need. It’s a one-stop source for information on everything related to meeting the need of mothers during pregnancy and post-pregnancy, for babies at birth, child care for infants, and much more.

Among the Baby Palooza workshops are: Baby Itsy Bitsy Yoga® – Ages: 6-weeks to Nearly Crawling. Baby Itsy Bitsy Yoga classes contain dozens of unique yoga postures designed to support baby’s development. No yoga experience required. Kim’s Signing Solutions Storytime – Learn how sign language can help minimize baby’s crying and temper tantrums, reduce their frustrations (and yours), and help you communicate with your child -- and them with you -- before they can speak. Baby Massage (newborn to noncrawler)– Find out how to provide loving massage strokes to your baby from the very beginning. This demonstration is designed for babies of all abilities including those with special needs.

Prenatal Yoga –This class will introduce expectant mothers to the many ways in which yoga can enrich the journey through pregnancy. Class will include a sequence of gentle yoga poses and will end with guided relaxation.Yoga experience not necessary. Protecting Your Family from Household Hazards – The Outreach Health Educator for Community Cradle will provide a presentation on exposure to ecological and environmental hazards that your family should be aware of. Ask the Lactation Consultant – An IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) will answer your questions about breastfeeding, including where to find breastfeeding help ... How often to feed your baby ... How to tell if your baby is getting enough milk ... How to get enough sleep ... What foods to avoid.

On March 1, visit www.guilpl.org/ youth/babypalooza.php for a complete list of workshops, workshop schedules, and exhibits. Josalyn Wilder, one of our Youth Services librarians has been awarded an American Libraries Association’s Books for Babies grant, which, with the help of the Friends of the Library, will allow us to distribute 200 Books for Babies kits to new parents at the Baby Palooza. The Guilderland Public Library is one of only 20 libraries nationwide to be awarded this year’s grant from Nordstrom and ALTAFF, the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations, a division of the American Library Association. For information on this free program, please contact the Youth Services Department of the Library at 456-2400, extension 9, the Public Information Office at 456-2400 extension 12, or email pio@ guilpl.org.
