Notes from the Supervisor’s Office

I

t seems as if winter may finally be over, although the way that the winter of 20102011 has gone, anything is possible. I’d like to remind our residents that as they begin the process of cleaning up their yards for the spring, our Highway Department crews will be circulating through the neighborhoods to pick up bagged yard waste and leaves, along with the branches that have fallen from trees during the winter. Please help these workers to perform their tasks more efficiently by bagging all leaves and yard waste, and by setting out branches in bundles no longer than four feet and tied with twine. Bags and bundles should be of a size that can be picked up and placed on one of our trucks by a single Highway Department worker. I would also like to thank these folks for doing a really good job on our Town roads during this difficult winter. The Capital Region Electronics and Air Conditioner Collection Day will be held from 7:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 23 at Taft Furniture, located at 1960 Central Avenue in Colonie. Items accepted for recycling include: computers and computer parts; non-console televisions; phones; radios; stereo equipment; calculators; games; and room air conditioners. A charge of $2 per vehicle will be donated to charity, and a recycling fee of $15 will be charged for all room air conditioners. This event serves multiple communities and is very popular, so plan to arrive early. Guilderland’s springtime Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be May 21 at the Transfer Station. I will provide additional information on that next month, or you can obtain information at the Guilderland website, www.townofguilderland.org.

The arrival of warmer weather means that people will be utilizing recreational facilities throughout the Town. I encourage you to visit our fine Town parks and enjoy the spring in the pleasant natural environment that they offer. Also, by the time you read this, Guilderland’s Western Turnpike Golf Course may be open for the season. I say “may because, although our grounds keeping staff has been hard at work getting the course ready for play, the weather is something that the past couple of months has proven we have no control over. Brochures for our popular summer recreation programs have been mailed to Town residents, and can be completed online, or mailed or brought in person to the Parks Department office on Route 146 near Tawasentha Park. Many of our programs fill quickly, so please plan on registering as soon as possible in order to avoid disappointment. The Guilderland Town Board recently completed the process of approving a multi-partisan Board of Assessment Review to process residents’ assessment challenges at Grievance Day in May. The Town Assessor’s page at www.townofguilderland.org contains complete and impartial information on both the assessment process and on procedures for challenging assessments. This information is also available at the Assessor’s Office at Town Hall. Verizon’s application to offer fiber-optic television service in Guilderland has been approved by the NY State Public Service Commission, and the company is beginning the process of laying fiberoptic cable throughout Guilderland and seeking subscribers. Verizon is in the midst

of a billion-dollar expansion of its television service capacity in Upstate New York. Under the terms of an agreement recently negotiated by the Town and Verizon, the company will provide access to fiber-optic service to all Guilderland residents within a five-year timeframe. The agreement will offer a choice of service providers to Guilderland residents, and will provide revenue to the Town based on the number of subscribers. The Guilderland Building Department has been working with the owners of the fire-damaged Governor’s Motel site on Western Avenue in an effort to expedite a resolution to the unsightly appearance of this property on Guilderland’s principal commercial thoroughfare. The owners of the property intend to demolish the damaged portion of the motel and then to rebuild. They will need to apply for a permit to demolish the damaged section. The Building Department has found a small amount of asbestos in the building, which will have to be safely removed before the building is demolished. I hope all our residents enjoy the arrival of springtime. Kenneth Runion, Town Supervisor

Message from the Chamber... Dear Readers:Spring is on the way; it can’t be much longer. The chamber has been anticipating the start of spring, just like you. We enjoy getting out and stopping in local businesses to say hi and see what’s new. There is also more traffic in our offices, to get brochures on things that are going on in the area and in the chamber. If you get a chance, go say hello to new businesses on Western, at Stuyvesant plaza and at Crossgates mall. Keep an eye out for the Twenty Mall’s makeover and re-name to Hamilton Square. Some chamber events coming up: Wednesday, April 13th - Women in Business Cooking Class Luncheon with BFS Mediterranean Restaurant! 12:00-2:30pm. Competition

T

here was a student in the taekwondo school I was working at in Westchester; let us call him Sam. Sam noticed the other students preparing for the New York State Taekwondo Championships and he decided that he wanted to compete as well. He worked very hard at performing his form (floor exercise) and became pretty good at it. When he went to the tournament, he did well enough to qualify for the National Championships. Sam doubled his efforts in practicing, and set his dream to place at nationals. From our school that year we sent seven people to nationals. The team returned with 10 medals total! Everyone came back with at least one medal. Except Sam. As parents, coaches, teachers and friends we have to cope with this situation. Is it better to try and fail than to never have even tried in the first place? The answer is a resounding yes. My philosophy is to encourage everyone by making sure that everyone feels included and that everyone feels like a winner. These days many times everyone gets prizes and there is a reduced focus on there being a best or a winner. I love this philosophy especially for Taekwondo because everyone that chooses to work in the martial arts is winning already by improving their self defense and overall fitness and character. I do, however, believe that having a focus on a defined winner or best is also beneficial. Children need to learn what it is like to win and lose. This will give them the ability to deal with success and failure in their adult life.

else in the school. He put his body through the exercise necessary to train for performance. He put his mind and body through the pressure of performing in front of scrutinizing panel of judges and audience. He can now advise others that want to try competition. He sounds like a winner to me. In general, students under pressure of evaluation try so much harder. For example, in English class, which is the better written paper? One that is not read by the teacher, one that is read as a small homework, one that is scrutinized for a test score, or one that qualifies the student for a scholarship to their school of choice? It takes a really special student to write the same paper for each of those situations. Most step up the level to match the importance of the situation. Competition brings out your best – win or lose. There are a lot of corny expressions about winning and losing. The bottom line is that it takes tremendous courage and preparation to compete and the competitor benefits from it in ways that they may not even realize. Last month I wrote about perseverance, the month before, integrity. Applying both of these character traits allows competitors to have the discipline to practice alone and the character to keep trying whether they win or lose. I keep in touch with Sam. He may find himself back at Nationals this year. Win or lose, I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Laughing our Way into Spring at the Guilderland Public Library by Barbara Nichols Randall, Director, Guilderland Public Library Many different cultures have had days of foolishness around the start of April, give or take a couple of weeks. The Romans had a festival named Hilaria on March 25, the Hindu calendar has Holi, and the Jewish calendar has Purim. .Perhaps there’s something about the time of year, with its turn from winter to spring, that lends itself to lighthearted celebrations. This month I want to highlight some of the many books, CDs and DVDs that the library owns that can help us laugh.

Steve Martin is an actor and comedian who is also an author. His autobiography Born Standing Up is both interesting and funny. Hearing him read his own words and tell some of his more famous jokes on our audio book version, makes this book doubly enjoyable. After hearing or reading it I guarantee you are also going to want to borrow one of his DVDs, Three Amigos, perhaps, where he shows off his rope tricks or The Crow his CD of original and traditional fivestring banjo tunes.

Another author whose audio books feel like private performances is David Sedaris. Whether creating fairy tales, Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk, or spinning tales of his family, Naked, Sedaris is always entertaining. His sister Amy is also amusing whether “teaching” tongue in cheek crafts, Simple Crafts, or acting in the cult TV show Strangers with Candy.

You can read or come and enjoy Shel Silverstein’s “Pilly Soems” here at the Library. April 20th there will be a special program for grades 1-3 creating a clay sculpture and participating in a poetry slam. Runny Babbit, Falling Up and Where the Sidewalk Ends are just a few of his fun books.

Mystery lover’s can laugh along with Stephanie Plum and Grandma Mazur in the Janet Evanovich number series, One for the Money… Sizzling Sixteen.

And we have scores and scores of jokes books from Bennett Cerf to Sandra Boynton, we have them all!

12

And in the spirit of the season, I have to share three library knock knock jokes: Knock knock. Who’s there? Cardigan. Cardigan who? Oh, no! I went to the library and forgot my card-igan! Knock knock. Who’s there? Snow. Snow who? Snow better place to hang out than the library! Knock knock. Who’s there? Clothes on. Clothes on who? The library’s clothes on Easter, but we’ll be open again on Monday! Happy Reading & April Fooling, Barbara

Free Report Shows How To Stop Paying Rent Forever And Buy A Home Of Your Own Instead! Guilderland, NY - John was so excited, he could hardly stand it. Finally, he and Mary were homeowners! He was standing outside the apartment building they had lived in for the last five years, watching the movers load the last piece of furniture into the van. (How did they ever fit all that stuff into that teeny apartment he wondered). As the van pulled away, John turned to Mary and said, “Come on, we’re out of here! As they drove up to front of their new home, Mary had tears in her eyes. She couldn’t believe she was pulling into her driveway and not someone else’s! What a different feeling it was. She turned to look in the back seat of their car, at their 3 year old son Johnny, and her eyes filled with tears again. “Honey, look, we have our own house from now on. See that swing set? It’s all yours to play on any time you want! As they happily opened the front door, Mary remembered all the times she had prayed they would be able to get out of the small apartment. All that changed one night, as Mary was reading the paper, and saw a FREE REPORT called “How to Stop Paying Rent Forever and Own A Home Of Your Own Instead! She was curious, so she called for the report. A few days later it came in the mail. And when she read it, she learned that there were ways to buy a home she and John had never heard of before! Without a lot of money or income. Only three weeks after getting the information, John and Mary found a home and bought it. Without the money they thought they needed! To get a copy of this free report, just call the toll-free recorded message line below. Call now to find out what your landlord is hoping you never read. Q. Dr. Oshins, why is it important to floss?

Guilderland Event Slated for May 21st On May 21, 2011, GHS will host its second annual Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society. Relay is an overnight event at the GHS football field but you don’t have to stay all night to experience its magic. The opening ceremony is a celebration of survivorship as our Guilderland neighbors who have battled cancer take to the track for a victory lap, cheered on by family and friends. At sunset, candles in white luminary bags light the track in honor of those we have lost to this disease, and those still fighting. The event includes a DJ, games, activities and of course, food. Those who choose to stay all night pitch tents around the track, and “camp out to fight cancer, taking turns walking the track throughout the night, or sneaking a nap!

A. Brushing our teeth removes food particles, plaque, and bacteria from all tooth surfaces, except in between the teeth. Unfortunately, our toothbrush can’t reach these areas that are highly susceptible to decay and periodontal (gum) disease. Daily flossing is the best way to clean between the teeth and under the gumline. Flossing not only helps clean these spaces, it disrupts plaque colonies from building up, preventing damage to the gums, teeth, and bone. Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (acids) that cause cavities and irritate and inflame the gums. Also, when plaque is not removed above and below the gumline, it hardens and turns into calculus (tartar). This will further irritate and inflame the gums and also slowly destroy the bone. This is the beginning of periodontal disease. &RPPLWWHG WR FRQWLQXRXV WUDLQLQJ DQG XVLQJ VWDWH RI WKH DUW HTXLSPHQW DQG WHFKQLTXHV WR PDLQWDLQ WKH KLJKHVW TXDOLW\ RI GHQWDO FDUH

Relay for Life (RFL) was launched in 1985 by Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon from Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Klatt combined his passion for running, and his desire to fight cancer into an event that has raised over $3 billion since its inception. And while most of us will walk the track instead of running, nearly 5,000 communities nationwide will host Relay for Life events this year.

THE PAINFUL TRUTH ABOUT OBESITY AND BACK PAIN By Dr. Jennifer L. Noonan, Spinal Wellness Center, Western Ave, Guilderland

I

t’s no secret that obesity is at epidemic proportions in the U.S. where the overweight/obese population is approaching 75%! Being overweight not only increases ones risk of hypertension, high cholesterol, type II diabetes, coronary artery disease, stroke, respiratory problems and some cancers, but is also associated with an increased incidence of low back pain. In addition, being overweight or obese can significantly contribute to symptoms associated with osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and degenerative disc disease. The spine is designed to carry the body’s weight and distribute the loads encountered during rest and activity. When excess weight is carried, the spine has to accommodate that burden. This causes damage to the joint, discs and surrounding soft tissue. The human body is not designed to carry such excessive loads over time. It breaks down. Unfortunately it is not uncommon for overweight individuals to blame back pain on other things and not address the real issue. Recognizing the consequences of obesity and deciding to do something about it are two very important hurdles to get through. So what is an overweight person with back pain supposed to do? My first suggestion is to seek spinal care immediately. Tremendous relief can be obtained with chiropractic care and specifically prescribed exercises while someone begins a weight loss program. Waiting for weight loss only allows the condition to worsen. Even modest amounts of weight loss can help back pain and make mobility easier, thus making a lifestyle change towards weight loss much more enjoyable and successful. Don’t be discouraged by excess weight or back pain. There are ways to get better and at the Spinal Wellness Center we are uniquely qualified to help.

Dr. Noonan resides here in Guilderland with her husband David, who is also a Chiropractor, and her sons Connor, Noah and Aiden. She is a graduate of Guilderland High School, SUNY Cortland and New York Chiropractic College. She has served families in the community with chiropractic for over 18 years.

March 31, 2011—The NYS Legislature passed the 2011-12 state budget late last night/early this morning. School districts around the state have spent the week eagerly awaiting the state aid runs to find out how much more money they would receive from the $270 million in aid that was restored above the Governor’s original proposal. The runs were not available until around 9 p.m. last night, just before the education bill was brought to legislators for debate. Guilderland Central School District received an additional $328,195 in aid. “Despite the efforts of the legislature to help ease some of the financial burden outlined in Governor Cuomo’s executive budget proposal, the fact is we are still looking at a significant loss of funding for the coming school year, said Superintendent of Schools Marie Wiles. Under the approved state budget, Guilderland is facing a total loss in aid of more than $678,000 compared to the aid the district is expected to receive in 2010-11. In addition, in the coming year GCSD—like districts across the state—will see the end of federal stimulus funds that partially offset last year’s state aid reductions. Increases in fixed costs such as pension, health care, and fuel only compound the problem. “While the restoration isn’t as significant as we might have hoped, in these extraordinary fiscal times every little bit helps, said Wiles.

Please call Pat at (518) 768-2579, or visit him at the next adoption clinic for Greyhounds as Companions which is held at the Delmar Pet Supply every third Saturday of the month from 11am-2pm.

Maria is a lovely 2 yr, old small spayed female tiger. She loves to be around people, enjoys sitting on your lap, & will want to sleep in your bed at night. Maria loves to play and adores being held like a baby. She gets excited when you arrive home and will rub against you to say hello. Contact her foster Dad, Ray, at (518) 370-7128, or rcolucciellojr@nycap.rr.com.

SAVE THE DATE! June 11, 2011 – Guilderhaven, inc. annual Bake & Book Sale; homemade baked goods, lots of books, plants, and BBQ. Held at the Altamont Orsini Park. Call Sue at 861-6861, or Georgia at 439-9264 for more information, or if you would like to volunteer to help us set up.
