ow that it’s June, we can hope that the frost warnings are behind us, and that our residents have their gardens and lawns set for the summer season. Our Parks Department has been working diligently to prepare our Town facilities for the high level of use they typically see during the warmer weather. There are still openings in a good number of Guilderland’s summer recreation programs, from the three 2-week half-day day camp sessions that begin on June 28 to a broad range of sports and activity camps that run from late June through August. You can register on-line for these camps at www.guilderlandrec.com, or call the Parks and Recreation Department office at 456-3150 for more information. The Town Pool at Tawasentha Park opens for the season on Saturday, June 19. Open from noon until 7:00 P.M. on weekdays, and from 11:30 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. on weekends, the facility offers a pleasant, inexpensive opportunity to cool off in the hot weather. Senior citizens and children under 5 swim for free, and both season passes and daily admissions are available. The Guilderland Rock Adventure Barn (“GRAB�) will also be open from noon on Thursdays through Sundays beginning on June 24. With over 3,000 square feet of climbing surface available, GRAB offers an interesting and different kind of family

fun. Daily admission to GRAB, including use of the climbing gear, is $5.00 The 31st season of Guilderland performing Arts Center Thursday evening concerts at Tawasentha Park will begin on June 24 at 7:30. This popular series always provides relaxing evenings of free entertainment to Guilderland residents, and this summer will be no exception. The 2010 GPAC performance schedule is available in this issue of Our Towne Guilderland (page 8), as well as on the Town website, www.townofguilderland.org. Guilderland’s historic John L. Schoolcraft House will be the site of a lawn party from 11:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 19. The 19th Century Greek Revival house, located at 2299 Western Avenue, next to the Hamilton Union Church, is being carefully restored, and this event will allow guests to tour the site and to see the progress that has been made in restoring the home, as well as to learn more about its history and architecture. I would like to remind everyone again about our expanded plastic recycling program at the Town Transfer Station. We are now accepting plastic items #4 through #7. Some of the items that can now be accepted include plastic drinking cups, butter containers, prescription pill bottles, and yogurt containers. Please check the Transfer Station page on

the Town waybills for more details. Also, Guilderland, as one of the 14 communities that are members of the Capital Region Recycling Partnership, has launched a website devoted exclusively to recycling. You can find a lot of timely and useful information on this site, www.capitalregionrecycling.com. We are now coming into the end of the school year and summer vacations, and a lot of people will be on the move throughout our community. I can’t believe its June; the kids will be out of school very soon, camps are opening, and there is lots to do in the summer around Guilderland. Check out the Parks and Recreation booklet online or at the office on Rt 146, and you will see info about camps, walking trails, the GPAC schedule, Pool Info, Altamont Concerts at Orsini Park, and golfing at Western Turnpike. There is also the Guilderland Public Library’s Friday Night Movie series, where families can bring pillows, sleeping bags and stuffed animals and see a Disney Movie. At the chamber, we are planning Summer Restaurant Week for July 18-24th! This is our 3rd Annual, and promises to be the best yet. We do have to increase the price a little; the cost of food is really killing our participating restaurants, but it is still a bargain! For $20.10 you get an appetizer, dinner and dessert at approximate 15 local participating restaurants. Check www.tasteofguilderland.com by the beginning of July for restaurants and the menus. You can also stop by the chamber office, where we have the menus printed for you. We have a First Friday Business Breakfast at 7:30 am on June 4, with DA David Soares and ADA Chris Baines talking about small business and white collar crimes, and crime prevention programs that the DA’s office oversees. We have our 38th Annual Dinner and Award Ceremony at Albany Country Club at 5:30 on June 10, and have a local comedian hosting the event! Should be a blast!! We will be slowing down a little for July (we will be busy dining out for Restaurant week:) but will pick back up again for august, so keep watch on our website for those events we have coming. Spotlight on Mrs. Mackey Hannah Cohen first fair in 1985 was the brainchild of Mrs. Mackey and a group of ESL students who felt pre y isolated from the main¬stream GHS popula on. The first year was, in Mrs. Mackey’s words “hit or miss,” and while the day didn’t go completely smoothly, the tradi on of the cultural fair had begun.

When one thinks of unique tradi ons at Guilderland High School, the cultural fair is definitely one a major thing that comes to mind. With the en re school in a endance and hundreds par cipa ng, the event, run by interna onal club, is extremely important here at GHS. Also, since everyone par cipa ng in the fair, from dances to henna, must become a member, Ever since 1985, the Interna onal Club is the fair has steadily grown largest club at our school. According to Mrs. Mackey the fair “opens doors” and makes students step outside their comfort zone, helps form friendships, and is an all around enjoyable experience. During cultural fair me, we see a different side to many people, for example, the cultural fair is the only place you’ll find a football player willingly wear a skirt, for the Haka dance. Mrs. Mackey says she o en looks at kids par cipa ng in the fair compared to how they are in the classroom and thinks “Is this the same person?” Something about the fair opens our minds and brings us together as we learn about world cultural through designated country booths, dances, foods, and ethnic items.

Because of the fair kids who wouldn’t normally interact join groups and make friends. Students some mes amaze me with what they do. The fair is truly a community event and to not have it would be a very sad thing.” Indeed, it would be, because the enthusiasm towards the fair is proven. Mrs. Mackey says that she has been told in the past that the day of the cultural fair is one of the highest a endance days of the year. No one wants to miss out on the experience.

It’s true that the cultural fair is a day that brings us all together, but it’s also a lot of fun. The Guilderland community would be missing out on a lot if it is unable to con nue.

We’re coming upon the summer months and the end of school. This o en can mean a change in rou ne and the adop on of other ac vi es and programs in your child’s daily schedule. While summer is a wonderful me of year to relax and try new things, it’s important for your child to maintain a balance of structured and unstructured me. It’s advisable to keep some consistency in your child’s ac vity schedule so that the transition back at the end of the summer is not jarring or diďŹƒcult. I have been asked about whether a child should or shouldn’t “take a breakâ€? from their lessons or classes during the summer. Obviously, there’s no one answer since no child is the same. However, in my experience, maintaining at least 1-2 classes per week during the summer helps a child to feel a sense of accomplishment and stability. At the same me, they’re able to strengthen their character and keep their commitment to learning alive. This helps them to be classroomready when school resumes. Children get very uneasy if they feel that they’re missing something or that someone is advancing ahead when they are “on a break.â€? This can nega vely impact children’s confidence levels and make them feel reluctant to rejoin once the break is over. Of course, if a week long vaca on is planned, a prepared parent can side step any nega ve ramifica ons by having their children take an extra class before leaving or an extra class when they return. Front loading classes (without overwhelming) can ease the feeling that they are “falling behindâ€? or someone else is “ge ng

ahead.� In addi on, ge ng a tutor, such as a more advanced student or a willing instructor, can help a child to stay on the path to success when a vaca on is planned.

Brian explained that currently, he trains 12 hours a week. But, when he was between the ages of 14 and 16, he used to train for approximately 20 hours a week. The most intense consump on of me he has trained for was 25 hours a week back during the summer of 2008. Throughout his fencing career, Brian has competed in numerous USFA events (such as the Junior Olympics,

COMMUNITY CAREGIVERS 6TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT Orchard Creek Golf Course, in Altamont will be the site of the Community Caregivers 6th annual golf tournament to be held on June 21, 2010. Sponsors for the event include Adirondack Environmental Services, Inc., SEFCU, Times Union, Atlas Copco and Wells Fargo Advisors. Golfers will enjoy 18 holes of golf with carts, box lunch, refreshments on the course, cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres and a chicken and rib dinner. Price per golfer is $125. Cocktails & dinner only is $50 per person. The format is a scramble with three divisions, mixed, women and men.
