Notes from the Supervisor’s Office
W
e’re into the latter stages of summer as I write this, and between the heat and humidity and many people being on vacation, things around Guilderland have slowed down a bit, but there are still some items worth a mention. I continue to remind residents of the activities available to them at no cost or at a discounted rate through Guilderland’s Parks and Recreation Department. Whether it is hiking the nature trails, swimming in the Town Pool, or having a family picnic, Tawasentha Park offers a range of recreational activities for summertime enjoyment. Thursday evenings in August will see the continuation of the Guilderland Performing Arts Center concert series, with free music under the stars at 7:30. The Town’s Western Turnpike Golf Course also continues to offer the opportunity for residents to enjoy a pleasant round of golf in our wellmaintained facility at a discounted rate. Please check the Town website at www.townofguilderland.org for details on what’s available. Despite the well-documented economic issues at the national and regional level, our local business community continues to show its vitality through the opening of new businesses and the expansion of
existing ones. Some recent examples include the opening of Chrispy Cuts Barber Shop and Clancy Real Estate on Western Avenue and Forever 21 in Crossgates Mall, and new ownership at Quizno Subs in the 20 Mall. We also saw the expansion of local businesses, including Old Navy in Crossgates Mall and Different Drummer’s Kitchen in Stuyvesant Plaza. We would like to wish these operations every success, as the vitality of our business community contributes to the overall quality of life here in Guilderland. We were recently notified that the Town of Guilderland has been nominated for $500,000 in funding under the New York State Department of Transportation’s Multi-Modal Program. The office of Senator Neil Breslin worked with the Town to advance this nomination. The funding will be utilized for the first phase of a project to relieve the issues of street and basement flooding that have plagued residents of the McKownville neighborhood on Guilderland’s eastern edge for many years. While a full resolution of the problem will require significant additional work, securing this funding will be a significant first step

toward resolution of this longstanding issue. The Village of Altamont recently dedicated a new pocket park named in honor of longtime resident and former Trustee Phyllis Schilling. This was a richly-deserved honor, as Phyllis Schilling has been an active member of the Village community for many years, with a well-known dedication to preserving and building on the beauty and family-friendly environment of Altamont. Message from the Chamber...
Summer is flying by, and I have seen a lot of you at the events and happenings going on here in Guilderland. Several hundred people and businesses helped Friends of Guilderland Athletics raise $18,500 at the BBQ in July and it made me proud to be a resident of Guilderland. Also great to hear that so many folks participated in Guilderland restaurant week! Our restaurants reported that they were packed; and community residents reported that they were stuffed! Everyone benefits. The Chamber staff are having fun attending all the summer events, and gearing up for a busy fall. We will be having networking mixers at Uno, Creo, and Londonderry CafĂŠ, and are coordinating the second annual Ladies Night Out Health and Wellness event on Sept 30. That is free and open to the whole community. We are also again partnering with the Guilderland Public Library and SUNY Small Business Development Center for our “Start Upâ€? series in October on 3 Saturdays, and getting ready for Health Insurance Open enrollment by offering the Lowest Prices on health insurance for business owners and employees. Please visit our website for more information on these events and more. Our website has town information, a local business directory, a calendar of events, and a ton of information on what the chamber does for business. www.guilderlandchamber.com Enjoy your August, and I hope I see you around town!

Guilderland Chamber Helps Host Old Navy Re-grand Opening Guilderland Chamber and Old Navy representatives cut the ribbon on their newly remodeled store at Crossgates Mall on Saturday July 24 while over 150 customers watched and waited for the free giveaways! Left to righ - GCC’s Kathy Burbank, Supervisor Ken Runion, Old Navy’s Jeff Green, Store Manager Rosa, and GCC board member Joanne Hook. Old Navy has recently remodeled its Crossgates Mall store. In honor of its makeover, the store has decided to throw the public a family fun day. The event will begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony and will feature a DJ, face painting, raffles, a fun wheel, cotton candy, popcorn, a clown, and appearances by various dignitaries. The store will also feature blowout sales on some of its most popular items. Old Navy expects at least 300 people to attend the event. The first 200 people in line have a chance to win either a $500 shopping spree, a $200 shopping spree or free Old Navy jeans and graphic tees. “The Guilderland Chamber is proud to be part of such an exciting event, Kathy Burbank, the executive director of the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce, said. “Not only is Old Navy offering fantastic sales, but the store is going above and beyond by providing the community fun activities in their own backyard. Proceeds from the raffles will benefit two non-profit organizations—Blue Star Moms and the Mohawk Hudson River Humane Society. Blue Mothers is a support group for mothers of active sons or daughters in the United States military. The group also participates in various projects and activities that benefit members of the armed services. The Humane Society is a group dedicated to saving the lives of unwanted or abused animals. The society was established in 1887.

“CONQUER THE MOUNTAIN” By Dr. Jennifer L. Noonan, Spinal Wellness Center Those are the words one of my favorite Pastors keptt repeating in a sermon recently. Conquer The Mountain. As I aimlessly y pondered a topic for this month, it kept coming to mind in terms of ones health. When you feel so completely etely unhealthy- fatiqued, joint nt pain, digestive problems, s, PMS, headaches, stress, weight gain (sounding familiar?)gaining control and obtaining optimal health can seem like an unconquerable mountain. It’s not.
What makes a curious reader?
Let me help you focus. There are 3 components of health that if you include and work on will change your life and health. #1. Chiropractic Wellness Care; The spine, nervous system and all the vital process’ they control are the very foundation of any optimal health program. You cannot have optimal health if your nerve, lymphatic and circulatory system (all effected by chiropractic care) are sluggish. #2. A diet rich in whole, organic, nutrient rich food and supplementation; I don’t mean the outdated, marketdriven food pyramid-type diet either. And no matter what you are told, you cannot get the nutrients needed for vibrant health by diet alone. You have to supplement. ( Read “Diet For A New America” by John Robbins) That too can be made simple with very little effort. #3. Regular exercise; Every day I counsel people on how to obtain fitness without spandex, gym memberships or hours of sweating. I have started people with chair exercises if needed. There is a program for everyone, you just have to want to feel better and have a teensy bit of motivation to get started. The pay-off is huge. August Reads (& Listens) Summertime, when the reading is easy… Will August be as hot as the rest of the summer? Whether you call them “dog days” or have the “doldrums” I know that I just want to sit in the shade with a nice glass of lemonade and read something cool, upbeat, and uncomplicated. Everyone by now has heard of the “Chicken Soup for the ……. Soul” series. Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen compiled the first 101 stories. There are now well over 101 books with themed stories. Speaking of stories, the library has many short story collections from classic to contemporary collections; all can be found in 808.3. The annual compilations include annual “best of” as well as genre collections. The even easier way of reading is to borrow one of our many “Playaway” books. Complete books are recorded on a 2x3 inch player that you can slip into your pocket. Using your own ear buds, you can listen to classics like Sherlock Holmes or one of James Patterson’s latest. If even listening to a book is too much heavy lifting try some music with the Library’s new service, Radio GPL. You can listen to playlists of music from our collection and the reserve the CDs that strike your fancy. This month we feature Latin jazz, big band sounds and cowboy songs. EXERCISE: 7 BENEFITS OF REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY You know exercise is good for you — but do you know how good? From boosting your mood to improving your sex life, find out how exercise can improve your life. Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps even live longer? Look no further than old-fashioned exercise. The merits of regular physical activity — from preventing chronic health conditions to promoting weight loss and better sleep — are hard to ignore. And the benefits are yours for the taking, regardless of age, sex or physical ability. Need more convincing? Check out seven specific ways exercise can improve your life. 1. Exercise improves your mood. Need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A workout at the gym or a brisk 30-minute walk can help you calm down. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed than you were before you worked out. You'll also look better and feel better when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your selfesteem. Regular physical activity can even help prevent depression. 2. Exercise combats chronic diseases. Worried about heart disease? Hoping to prevent osteoporosis? Physical activity might be the ticket. Regular physical activity can help you prevent — or manage — high blood pressure. Your cholesterol will benefit, too. Regular physical activity boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good," cholesterol while decreasing triglycerides. This one-two punch keeps your blood flowing smoothly by lowering the buildup of plaques in your arteries.

$/%$1<
And there's more. Regular physical activity can help you prevent type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and certain types of cancer. 3. Exercise helps you manage your weight. Want to drop those excess pounds? Trade some couch time for walking or other physical activities. This one's a no-brainer. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn — and the easier it is to keep your weight under control. You don't even need to set aside major chunks of time for working out. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk during your lunch break. Do jumping jacks during commercials. Better yet, turn off the TV and take a brisk walk. Dedicated workouts are great, but physical activity you accumulate throughout the day helps you burn calories, too. 4. Exercise boosts your energy level. Winded by grocery shopping or household chores? Don't throw in the towel. Regular physical activity can leave you breathing easier. Physical activity delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. In fact, regular physical activity helps your entire cardiovascular system — the circulation of blood through your heart and blood vessels — work more efficiently. Big deal? You bet! When your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you'll have more energy to do the things you enjoy. 5. Exercise promotes better sleep. Struggling to fall asleep? Or stay asleep? It might help to boost your physical activity during the day. A good night's sleep can improve your concentration, productivity and mood. And you guessed it — physical activity is sometimes the key to better sleep. Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. There's a caveat, however. If you exercise too close to bedtime, you may be too energized to fall asleep. If you're having trouble sleeping, you might want to exercise earlier in the day. 6. Exercise can put the spark back into your sex life. Are you too tired to have sex? Or feeling too out of shape to enjoy physical intimacy? Physical activity to the rescue. Regular physical activity can leave you feeling energized and looking better, which may have a positive effect on your sex life. But there's more to it than that. Regular physical activity can lead to enhanced arousal for women, and men who exercise regularly are less likely to have problems with erectile dysfunction than are men who don't exercise — especially as they get older. 7. Exercise can be — gasp — fun! Wondering what to do on a Saturday afternoon? Looking for an activity that suits the entire family? Get physical! Physical activity doesn't have to be drudgery. Take a ballroom dancing class. Check out a local climbing wall or hiking trail. Push your kids on the swings or climb with them on the jungle gym. Plan a neighborhood kickball or touch football game. Find a physical activity you enjoy, and go for it. If you get bored, try something new. If you're moving, it counts! Are you convinced? Good. Start reaping the benefits of regular physical activity today!

Strawberry Shortcake What better way to conjure up memories of the joys of youth than strawberry shortcake? Strawberry shortcake consists of sliced strawberries that have been macerated with whipped cream served over a white cake or biscuit. I'm from the camp that insists that strawberry shortcake is made with a biscuit, not a cake. Growing up we always made the shortcake biscuits with Bisquick baking mix, which now, thankfully, has a zero-transfat version of their product. The best of course are biscuits made from scratch, using butter and cream. I've included recipes here for excellent homemade biscuits, the Bisquick biscuits, and also wheat and gluten-free biscuits for those who don't want to give up strawberry shortcake just because they can't eat wheat. Strawberry Shortcake Recipe INGREDIENTS • Strawberries and whipping cream: • 3 baskets of fresh strawberries • 1/2 cup sugar • Whipping cream • Vanilla
METHOD Remove the stems from the strawberries. Slice into thin (1/4" to 1/8") slices. Put into a large bowl. Add 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of sugar (depending on how sweet the strawberries are to begin with) and mix into the strawberries. Set aside at room temperature to macerate (which means that the sugar will soften the strawberries and help release their juices). After the strawberries have been sitting for 20 minutes or so, take a potato masher and mash them a little. Not too much, just enough to get more juice out of them. Whip the cream, adding a drop or two of vanilla and a teaspoon of sugar. To serve, break up one biscuit per person into big pieces into a bowl. Ladle strawberries over the biscuit. Add a dolop of whipped cream. Bisquick biscuits: 2 1/3 cups Bisquick baking mix 3 Tbsp butter, melted 1/2 cup milk 3 Tbsp sugar The strawberry shortcake biscuit recipe used to be on the side of the Bisquick box. For some unfathomable reason, the company has started to print the recipe on the inside of the box. Talk about not understanding your customers! If you can't find the recipe, here it is: Heat oven to 425°F. Stir baking mix, melted butter, milk, and 3 Tbsp of sugar in a mixing bowl until soft dough forms. Drop by 6 spoonfuls on to a greased cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Makes 6 biscuits. $// '5< &/($1,1* '21( 21 35(0,6(6

EXPLORING THE CAREGIVERS JOURNEY WORKSHOP SPONSORED BY COMMUNITY CAREGIVERS This interactive workshop explores Gail Sheehy’s new book, PASSAGES IN CAREGIVING. In weaving our own experiences into the wisdom of the book, new insights emerge for our own situations of caregiving, whether for a family member, an organization or ourselves.
