Notes from the Supervisor’s Office

A

s summer begins to wind down and the school year begins, I would like to begin by reminding all of our drivers to be especially cautious on our roadways, and to encourage the parents of school-age children to make sure that their children are reminded of the need for caution when walking or bicycling. Please also remember that state law requires motorists to stop for school buses stopped and with their red flashers on. Safety is important all year long, but the changeover associated with the start of a new school year is a time for a little extra caution on everyone’s part. Our Fall Household Hazardous Waste Day falls a bit early this year, and will be held from 8:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 11 at the Town Highway Department Garage on French’s Mill Road. Those who wish to participate will need to present a coupon that can be obtained by residents without charge when they present a current vehicle registration at either the Town Clerk’s Office or the Transfer Station during normal business hours. Pack your materials safely for transport and drive to the Highway Garage, where your vehicle will be unloaded for you and the materials disposed of in an environmentally appropriate manner. Information about the materials that can be processed through this event can be found on the Town website, www.townofguilderland.org. Please call the Transfer Station at 861-6776 if you have any questions. We appreciate the

September Reading from Your Library: Guilderland's Gathering Place by Barbara Nichols Randall, Director, Guilderland Public Library

The “dog days” of summer may be past but it is possible to read about dogs, view videos about dogs or even read to dogs at the Library! Cesar’s Way by Cesar Millan, the “dog whisperer”, is just one of the books we own about how to train your pet. In addition, it is possible to see Cesar (and his amazing rapport with dogs) in Becoming a Pack Leader and the first season of his television series, The Dog Whisperer. The Library has more than seventy different books that help families choose the right dog or train the dog that chose them. We also have an exciting new book by well-known local veterinarian, Dr. John J. Brennan. This Vet has Tales tells just some of the many stories of his years in practice at the Guilderland Animal Hospital. This fall Dr. Brennan will be telling some of those tales to us when we host a reading from his book, Mystery lovers will bark with joy to read the “dog lovers” series by Susan Conant. Beginning with A New Leash on Death there are seventeen different stories where dogs and dog trainer Holly Winter lead us to a happy conclusion. Teens will enjoy (and may be inspired by) The World According to Dog: Poems and Teen Voices a compilation by Joyce Sidman that explores the unique relationship between teens and their dogs. Children of all ages will love reading about or listening to the “tails” of Norman Bridwell’s Clifford the Big Red Dog. Clifford books include board books, easy readers and chapter books. He is also a star of videos and his own CD-ROM game. Lastly Eric Knight’s classic, Lassie Come Home, can be found at the Library in both the print and video versions. You may be surprised to learn that in these stories there is no Timmy and there is no well. And if you want to see and read to a dog, watch our newsletter for the reading dog’s next visit. Happy Reading!

Barbara

Back to School Tips on Bullying by Bob Esposito Capital Northeast Martial Arts

One of the biggest concerns from parents during the backto-school season is bullying. Some 160,000 kids skip school everyday because they fear of being attacked or ridiculed by bullies. The good news is that these disturbing statistics can be limited with the proper education. As an person that has worked with hundreds of children on anti-bullying strategies, I have found that the most important skill a child should have when dealing with bullies is confidence. No matter what you teach a child, it will not be effective without the confidence to put the lessons into action. Children that fall victim to bullies usually are targets because they lack the confidence to stand up for themselves. Therefore, it is very important that you begin instilling confidence within your child if you want him or her to effectively handle bullying. Here are a few tips on how you can build confidence within your child: Make sure that you are a good listener when talking with your child. Try not to ignore your child’s feelings. Children are more confident when they feel like they are being heard. If you, as a parent, take the time to listen to your child then he or she will have more confidence to speak their mind when dealing with bullies. Pay attention to your child’s moods. If your child is grumpy or agitated, then most-likely he or she can act the same way around other children. That can increase the chance of your child falling victim to unnecessary arguments and fights with others. Factors that can affect your child’s mood include: o

o

o

Lack of proper sleep each night. Children need at least 8 hours of total sleep per night. If they are not getting the proper amount of rest, then it can affect their mood the next day. Insufficient diet. Certain foods affect children’s moods including foods that are high in sugar, caffeine or fat. Keep your child’s diet balanced with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Lack of exercise. Children that do not exercise regularly tend to have a lower level of energy which will affect his or her mood. This can also lead to obesity which makes your child more prone to bullying.

Four Guilderland High School Friends Organize Walk For A Cause What is HunƟngton’s Disease? Hun ngton's disease is a rare, but deadly gene c disorder that is passed from parent to child. People with HD are born with a malfunc on in their gene c code where they produce too much of a protein in the brain, called Hun ng n. This protein a aches itself to neurons in the brain and nerves throughout the body, making it difficult for the pa ent to perform normal func ons. Effects include uncontrolled movements, loss of intellectual ability, a lack of coordina on, and emo onal disturbance. Each child of a Hun ngton's diseased parent has a 50 percent chance of inheri ng the diseased gene. A person who inherits the Hun ngton's disease gene will sooner or later develop the disease. The disease is usually found in people who are 30-50 years of age. In 1 to 3 percent of individuals with Hun ngton’s disease, no family history of can be found.

We decided to raise money for Hun ngton’s Disease because we saw its terrible effects. A family in Guilderland is currently greatly affected by Hun ngton’s Disease. In April, they lost their eight year old daughter to the disease and the father currently suffers from it as well. Hun ngton’s Disease (HD) is a rare disease and therefore it does not get the a en on it deserves. We decided that a community event would be the best way to spread the word about HD and to raise money to support research and families suffering from it. Why a walk? We chose to raise money for Hun ngton’s Disease by hos ng a walk because we felt that it was an ac vity both families and individuals in our community could enjoy while giving to a great cause.

September 2010 - - -

Can you give some details of the walk? The walk will take place on September 18th at Tawasentha Park (188 Route 146 Altamont, NY) from 9am to 1pm (runners should arrive at 8:30). It will begin with a 5k Compe ve Race followed by a half mile Children's Race (for 5th graders and under) and a 2-mile community walk. There will be food, vendors, prizes, live music and lots of fun! All proceeds will go to Hun ngton's Disease Society of America (HDSA). How can a business/individual sponsor? A business can sponsor the walk by comple ng the form on our website and mailing it to us with a check made payable to Hun ngton's Disease Society of America (HDSA). For individuals who cannot make it to the walk, but would s ll like to donate to our cause as a sleep-in, you can visit our website for a registra on form and mail it to us along with your check. Walkers can also have sponsors. Simply print out the walker registra on form on the website and bring your dona ons to be collected the day of the walk. Where can someone go for more informa on? You can visit our website at: h p://sites.google.com/site/guilderlandhun ngtonswalk/ or email us at hun ngtonswalk@yahoo.com to find out more about the walk and/or contact us. NO, DISC’S DON’T “SLIP By Jennifer L. Noonan, Spinal Wellness Center

Spinal discs are the “shock absorbers of your spine. They lie between your vertebrae, separating them with a gellike cushion, creating a space for spinal nerve roots to exit the spinal cord. Healthy discs also allow freedom of movement, particularly in bending and rotating. Discs anywhere in your spine can tear, bulge or herniate, but they do not “slip. The more common disc “bulge occurs when a weakened area of the disc protrudes out, like a soft ice cream sandwich. A “herniation implies a more serious compromise of the disc in which the soft center pushes out of the disc through the outer cartilage layer due to trauma or degeneration. Both scenarios can safely respond well to chiropractic care. Chiropractic care along with restorative exercises, is a proven safe and effective form of treatment, frequently eliminating the need for surgical intervention. In fact, in one study 80% of the patients studied had a good clinical outcome with resolution of abnormal clinical examination findings. Anatomically, after repeat MRI scans, 63% of the patients studied revealed a reduced size or completely resorbed disc herniation! It’s disappointing that with all the studies and information

available that patients are still advised by “concerned friends or health care providers, who have no relevant knowledge base or experience in the profession of chiropractic, that chiropractic adjustments should be avoided. That is like advising someone against dental care for a cavity. Ridiculous. In the majority of cases, the chiropractic adjustment is not only indicated, but is the most essential element of treatment. And it is the chiropractor who is most qualified to make the judgment to treat or not to treat. If you have a herniated disc and would like to avoid surgery or dependency on pain medication, I would be happy to speak with you. Please call 869-3415 for a free consultation and mention this article. Dr. Noonan resides here in Guilderland with her husband David, who is also a Chiropractor, and her sons Connor, Noah and Aiden. She is a graduate of Guilderland High School, SUNY Cortland and New York Chiropractic College. She has served families in the community with chiropractic for over 17 years.
