Notes from Supervisor Runion’s Office The change of seasons is certainly upon us as we move into November, and things are busy within your Town government. The Guilderland Highway Department is busy with its annual leaf collection operation. The large leaf vacuum trucks are circulating in all of the areas of the community where they are able to operate. Pick-up schedules were included in the Town newsletter, which was mailed to all of our residents in September. If you didn’t mark your calendar with the collection schedule for your neighborhood, you can check for the correct date for your street on the Town website, www.townofguilderland.org, or you may call the Town Highway Department direct at 861-5108. Please be considerate of both the Highway Department work crews and of your neighbors (particularly the children!) by avoiding leaf and brush piles or stacked leaf bags that can obstruct the vision of drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Also, please remember that brush placed by the side of the road for pickup needs to be cut into lengths no longer than 4 feet, and tied securely into bundles that can be picked up by a single worker. The McKownville Park project at the site of the former McKownville Reservoir is well under way. This project will serve two purposes. The first is to reduce both the frequency and the severity of flooding along Western Avenue in front of Stuyvesant Plaza by increasing the ability of the water body on the site to hold water in a severe storm situation, and to move that water downstream more efficiently. The second is to create a neighborhood-scale pocket park on the site for the enjoyment of both neighborhood residents and shoppers and workers in the Stuyvesant Plaza area alike. The project should be complete before the start of winter. We are extremely grateful to Assemblyman John McEneny, the New York State Department of Transportation, and to Stuyvesant Plaza for their help in providing the financial assistance needed for the completion of this project. The Guilderland Town budget for 2010 has been submitted to the Town Board, and can be viewed by anyone interested in the details on the Town website. Copies may also be obtained through the Town Clerk’s office. The budget will be voted on by the Town Board at its meeting on November 5. Budget preparation in the difficult economic climate that everyone- individuals and families, businesses, and government at every level- is in at this time is a real challenge. We have taken a conservative approach to estimating 2010 revenues, and have been equally careful about approving spending requests in creating the 2010 budget. I am pleased to report to you that the proposed budget does not reduce Town services in any meaningful way, and that it calls for the current Town tax rate of 26 cents per thousand dollars of assessed valuation to remain unchanged in 2010. The Zoning Review Committee appointed by the Town Board in August continues with its work of reviewing the Town Code and discussing various aspects of it with interested people throughout the Town. The group’s efforts involve assessing the current zoning law that Guilderland has on its books and recommending to the Town Board any changes to that law that it may consider to be appropriate. The group is also reviewing the forms and procedures used by the Town in the processing of various permit applications in the Planning and Zoning Departments to determine if changes to forms or procedures should be considered as a way to make the handling of such applications more efficient and user-friendly. November is the month when Thanksgiving occurs. We all have much to be thankful for in a community like Guilderland, and I would like to extend my personal best wishes and those of the staff of the Town of Guilderland for a safe and pleasant Thanksgiving for all of our Town’s residents and their families. Kenneth Runion, Town Supervisor
Community Caregivers Volunteers make a real difference. They’re good neighbors who drive disabled, elderly, and non-driving persons for medical appointments, visits to family in nursing homes, etc. They can either accompany a client who needs assistance or do the shopping for such items as food, prescriptions, or personal items.
They do chores and laundry – minor home repairs, carrying packages, trimming hedges, cleaning flower beds, planting, raking, mowing, organizing closets, unpacking boxes – all at no cost
Caregivers Volunteers offer Respite Services providing a caring presence so individuals and families who care for someone with dementia, a chronic illness or in end-of-life care can enjoy a break from their caregiving responsibilities.
We thank our volunteers and you can too. Join us at our 15th Annual Harvest Happening Gala on Saturday, November 21, at Albany Country Club, honoring SEFCU and Anthony W. Colonno. Dinner, wine tasting, Live and Silent Auctions. Please call for details and reservations – 456-2898
They prepare and deliver simple meals for individuals and families temporarily unable to provide for themselves, including delivering food from local food pantries. They perform light housekeeping such as dusting, vacuuming and straightening up as needed – weekly, biweekly, or monthly.

Message from the Chamber... Dear ReadersThe leaves are falling, the trick-or-treating is over, and all across Guilderland, signs of the holiday season are starting to appear. I cannot believe how fast the fall has flown! Make sure you check the town’s website for the leaf pick-up schedule, and get those winter coats out. To get in the mood for the holiday season, you are welcome to join us at the Appel Inn for a pre-holiday mixer catered by Elegant Touch on November 12 at 5:30 pm. If the upcoming holiday season on your mind yet, I am sure the ongoing debate on health care reform is. The initiative can be confusing to understand. Thus, the GCC will have a timely panel discussion on how to lower your health care costs. It will be sponsored by Heritage Village/Burns Management, and held at the Heritage Village Community Room, located off of 155, on November 19 from 11:30 am-1pm. One of the upcoming events I look forward to every year is the GCC annual holiday party. It is the celebration of a fantastic year that all members of the chamber and community can enjoy! This year, we are keeping the party at the GCC offices. It is sponsored by Key Bank and will be held on December 2. It is themed “A Taste of Guilderland, as it will feature fantastic hour devours, light entrees, and decadent desserts from 6 different restaurants from the Guilderland area. We will also be showcasing gift baskets from area businesses from November 18 until December 2, when they will be raffled off in a Chinese raffle at our holiday party. The GCC also prides itself on its desire to give back to the community. The holiday season is one of the best times of year to do this. Once again, the GCC will hold its Holiday Angel Program that allows members of the community to “adopt a family in the Guilderland school district. Last year, we adopted 25 families and brightened their holidays with donations of toys, grocery store, shopping mall and wal-mart gift cards. Trust me, it makes for a happy holiday for everyone. Check out these and our other business programs and events as well as times, locations and costs, at www.guilderlandchamber.com or call us at 456-6611.

Back to School Tips on Bullying by Bob Esposito, Capital Northeast Martial Arts One of the biggest concerns from parents during the back-to-school season is bullying. Some 160,000 kids skip school everyday because they fear of being attacked or ridiculed by bullies. The good news is that these disturbing statistics can be limited with the proper education. As an person that has worked with hundreds of children on antibullying strategies, I have found that the most important skill a child should have when dealing with bullies is confidence. No matter what you teach a child, it will not be effective without the confidence to put the lessons into action. Children that fall victim to bullies usually are targets because they lack the confidence to stand up for themselves. Therefore, it is very important that you begin instilling confidence within your child if you want him or her to effectively handle bullying. Here are a few tips on how you can build confidence within your child: Make sure that you are a good listener when talking with your child. Try not to ignore your child’s feelings. Children are more confident when they feel like they are being heard. If you, as a parent, take the time to listen to your child then he or she will have more confidence to speak their mind when dealing with bullies. Pay attention to your child’s moods. If your child is grumpy or agitated, then most-likely he or she can act the same way around other children. That can increase the chance of your child falling victim to unnecessary arguments and fights with others. Factors that can affect your child’s mood include:
10
• Lack of proper sleep each night. Children need at least 8 hours of total sleep per night. If they are not getting the proper amount of rest, then it can affect their mood the next day. • Insufficient diet. Certain foods affect children’s moods including
foods that are high in sugar, caffeine or fat. Keep your child’s diet balanced with plenty of fruits and vegetables. • Lack of exercise. Children that do not exercise regularly tend to have a lower level of energy which will affect his or her mood. This can

with your child about anti-bullying strategies. Here are five strategies that you should review with your child: 1. Assert yourself. Have your child practice standing tall and using a strong voice saying: “That’s teasing. Stop it. or “Stop making fun of me. It’s mean. 2. Use “I want. Role-play with your child by having him or her address you (the bully) by saying: “I want you to leave me alone, or “I want you to stop teasing me. 3. Question it. Have your child practice responding to an insult with a non-defensive question: “Why would you say that? or “Why would
Keep your child active in extracurricular sports and activities. Your child will make plenty of new friends and learn skills which can build confidence. Make sure the activities are healthy and are focused on character development. Also make sure that the teachers and coaches are experts at working with children and building confidence. If you pick the right activity, then you will notice a change in your child’s confidence almost immediately. Is your child a confident individual? If so, then the next step is to speak

you want to tell me I am dumb and hurt my feelings?â€? 4. Ignore it. Bullies love it when their teasing upsets their victims, so help your child find a way to not let his or her tormentor get to him/ her. Pretend they’re invisible, walk away without looking at them, quickly look at something else and laugh, or look completely uninterested. 5. Make Fun of the Teasing. Teach your child how to reply to bullies by saying something like: “Wow, you are so smart because you pick on other kids.â€? Or, “Did you think of that all on your own?â€? Remember, the key to dealing with bullies is all about how confident your child feels. The strategies above only work if your child is confident enough to say them. Role-playing is only half of the lesson. You child must be exposed to enough role-models and equipped with the proper amount of stimulants that increase confidence. Conclusion Like it or not, almost every child will come face-to-face with a bully. If you follow the tips in this article, you will equip your child with the skills necessary to deal with bullying. Although bullying cannot be prevented, it can be limited. Children will become more resilient as they overcome obstacles and build more skills. Bullying is one obstacle that your child can overcome. TREAT EAR INFECTIONS NATURALLY ‌IT WORKS BY DR. JENNIFER L. NOONAN, SPINAL WELLNESS CENTER
I remember one of my son’s ďŹ rst ear infections and thought, â€œâ€Śbut we’re chiropractors! He can’t have an ear infection!â€? But like many families, we had a child prone to ear infections. It’s how we handled them that was dierent. For starters we did not use antibiotics. Ear infections account for over 35% of all pediatric visits in the US. Antibiotics are not always eective and, as much research has shown, are likely to increase the chance of recurrence . For over 100 years chiropractors have been treating vertebral subluxations (joints of the spine that have lost their proper alignment causing stress on the body, particularly the nerve system). Subluxations of the upper cervical spine cause impairment of eustachian tube drainage and create abnormal tension on the muscles of the head and neck, impairing vital lymphatic drainage. The result? Ear infections. The infection is merely a symptom of an underlying issue-that is why antibiotics are ineective. Parents love our approach because it is so simple, so safe and so eective. The child is examined speciďŹ cally for upper cervical dysfunction, as well as any other structural problems. On that same visit we gently reduce it with a pediatric adjustment that requires little more than a light touch or “pulseâ€? with a ďŹ ngertip at just the right place and direction. Children are great getting adjusted because the chiropractic oďŹƒce is very non-threatening and not scary for them. I also try to remind parents that a fever is not the enemy! It’s actually one of our body’s greatest defense mechanisms. Bacteria and viruses cannot survive the heat. Shutting down that defense with acetaminophen or ibuprofen weakens healing ability and just prolongs the illness. Don’t medicate your children needlessly. Our bodies are designed to heal naturally and chiropractic is a phenomenal tool to facilitate that. Give us a call, we’d like to help!

HOW TO GET YOUR HOME SOLD IN JUST 23 DAYS! John and Mary had never felt more frustrated in their life. Here it was, almost 3 months since they listed the house, and no buyer. If they didn’t sell soon, John would lose the job offer he wanted so badly. They assumed that hiring a real estate agent would be the right thing to do, to sell the house quickly. They figured that a professional would be able to get the highest price, in the shortest period of time. Listen to what happened. The first agent they hired told them their house was so beautiful, it would sell immediately. (No such luck.) Weeks went by and produced nothing but empty promises. Then their agent told them they needed to spend $3,500 to “fix-up” the house in order to get it sold. After they spent the money, there were still no firm offers, even though everyone told them that “the house looked nice”. A few days later, Mary happened to be reading a magazine that offered a FREE REPORT called “How to Sell Your Home Quickly, At Your Price”, and she sent away for the report.

She discovered a unique marketing strategy that wasn't being used by their first agent. After their listing agreement expired, John and Mary began applying the simple tips outlined in the report and... 23 days later their house sold! What Mary and John learned wasn’t any kind of magic. What they learned is there are specific techniques that can be used to sell a home quickly, for the highest price. But for some reason, some real estate professionals are unaware of them, or don’t make use of them. To get a free copy of this report, just call the free recorded message line below, and a copy of the report will be sent to you. Q A ď Ť
with Susan Kindlon
Updo To You
Q. What year did your business start? A. I started Updo To You in 2005 as a convenience to local and out of town brides and bridal parties. Q. Where are you located and were you always in the same location? A. I am located at Avanti Hair Studio in Guilderland. Updo To You is a business that is done primarily at the Bride’s location. Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. I started doing upsweeps on hair in 1990 in the salon. Bridal parties would come in together to have their hair done for the big day. I always love to make women beautiful and on a wedding day all the girls are princesses. Sometimes there was some stress on the bridal party when one of the girls was lost and could not find the salon, or one of the girls was not quite on time. The bride would sometimes stress that the veil would get caught in the car when she had to drive home. My idea of a perfect wedding day is NO STRESS for the bride. So this is when Updo To You was born. All the girls have their final slumber party after the rehearsal dinner and I go to them in the morning. No getting lost, late or wrinkled. It is the most comfortable for the bride and her girls. I take care of all the timing and I am at their service. The girls can have a great time and are comfortably dressed just hanging out with their best friend, the Bride. Q. Do you have many regular customers? Is there anything specific that they are always coming in for? A. Most of my customers are one time only for their weddings. However, I do get many referrals from the brides and bridal parties. I also go on location to make girls going to proms beautiful as well as special events such as runway beauty shows. Girls that I start doing for proms tend to be the repeat customers. I do their hair for their junior prom, senior prom and then wedding day.

Q. Are you known for anything special? A. I am a hair stylist at Avanti Hair Studio. I specialize in hair coloring, precision cutting and putting hair up on location. Q. What hours are you open? A. I go to locations as early as 5 a.m. if needed. The timing depends on how big the bridal party is and what time the photographer is arriving. I like to be finished with all the girls one hour before the photographer arrives. This keeps everyone on time. I give each girl one hour of my time. Q. What do you love most about the business? A. What I love most about my business is that it gives me the opportunity to make other women happy. They are comfortable, relaxed and beautiful. I love to see a smile on their faces before the big day. I also love my business because it is a fun morning for me. I have a great time with all the girls. Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business? A. My biggest challenge is distance. I will travel anywhere to take care of a wedding party or special event. I do charge a travel expense if they are one hour or more away from Albany. I have done weddings in Las Vegas, Long Island, Cape Cod and New York City. Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. I would like the community to know that I am here to make a bride as comfortable as possible on her wedding day! Please call me at 495-6054 if you would like more information regarding Updo To You.

At COLES COLLISION we have mastered just that. Our referral rate and repeat customer rates are very high. We try to ask every customer how they got our name and we ďŹ nd a lot of the new customers are through word of mouth. This we can not buy with any advertising dollars. We must connect with each individual customer, and earn this business. As a customer I like to be treated well when I have a need or purchase to complete and we strive to create that for our customers. Our free detail at the end of the job or the attention to correctness of the repair are some of the everyday things we do. Although it doesn’t seem like it, you do have a choice of your repair facility and the insurer has to respect this by law. Why pick a shop that only cares about volume and doesn’t see each individual repair? We operate on fairness and integrity, and treat every repair the same, with care and concern that someone’s family is in that vehicle and we are responsible for that. The standards Coles is built on are the ones my father and I set in place as I was up and coming in management in my career. COLES COLLISION OF COLONIE is the last thing we accomplished together before I lost him to cancer. Let us show you customer service at a premium level and allow us to earn your business as we conduct ours with honor. See our website at www.colescollision.com or contact us at (518) 213-2070 Coles provides you with the highest standard of repair equipment and methods. With the at home family atmosphere; give us a try: 213-2070.
