Notes from Supervisor Runion’s Office As 2009 draws toward a close, I would like to take a moment to look back on some of what has happened here in Guilderland over the past year, and to look forward to the year ahead. I would like to express my appreciation to all of the citizens of Guilderland who participated in last month’s Town elections. Whoever you may have voted for, the important thing is that you exercised your right to vote. Citizen involvement is really at the heart of the democratic process, and everyone who participated should be commended for their help in making that process work. Guilderland, along with the rest of the Capital District, experienced the issues resulting from the severe recession that has plagued the entire nation for over a year now. We have worked hard to maintain the level of Town services that our residents need without adding to their already-challenging tax burden. I am happy to report that Guilderland will enter the new year operating under a budget that maintains all essential services, but that does not increase the Town taxes paid by our residents. We have been able to do this through the success of the cooperative efforts of all of our Town departments to find ways to conduct their operations more costeffectively without compromising the services that they provide to our residents. I would like to remind everyone that Guilderland’s parks offer recreation opportunities close to home and at little or no cost during the winter season. Residents can enjoy Tawasentha Park for hiking, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, depending on the weather. The hill in the Winter Recreation Area will be available for sledding and snow tubing. We will again offer cross-country skiing on groomed trails at Western Turnpike Golf Course as the weather allows. Ski rentals will be available on weekends. You can call our Parks Department Office at 456-3150 to inquire about current conditions. For the Town’s dog owners, we offer the dog park facility at our Nott Road Park all year long. Please check the Guilderland website, www.townofguilderland.org, regularly for updated information about recreational opportunities throughout town during the winter months, as the site is updated frequently. The drainage improvement and pocket park project at the site of the former McKownville Reservoir is now substantially complete. The project will reduce the frequency and severity of the flooding along Western Avenue in front of Stuyvesant Plaza, in addition to providing a pleasant passive-use park facility for residents, shoppers, and office workers. The project that the Town embarked on several years ago to provide water service to residents of Guilderland’s West End, an area that had long experienced issues with the quantity and quality of water available from wells, has been completed. I am pleased to report that this project was not only completed in a timely manner, but also that the final cost of these improvements will actually be less than what was originally budgeted for the project. The engineering studies commissioned by the Town to evaluate storm flooding in the Blackberry Estates and McKownville neighborhoods are well under way. While studies will not solve these problems, they are a major initial step in identifying the causes of the problems and the ways in which they may be resolved. With this information in hand, the important work of evaluating the costs of resolution and identifying funding strategies can be undertaken. I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of Guilderland’s elected officials and Town employees, to express my sincere best wishes to all of our Town’s residents for a safe and enjoyable holiday season, and for a happy and successful New Year. Kenneth Runion, Town Supervisor

Capital District YMCA Guilderland Branch 250 Winding Brook Drive Guilderland, NY 12084 518-456-3634 The Guilderland YMCA Offers Nutritional Support Services for All Interests Are you confused about nutrition facts labels and health claims on the thousands of items in the grocery store? Sorting fact from fiction is difficult since conflicting nutrition information confronts us daily. What should we eat for better health? The task of planning and preparing healthy meals can be a daunting task! Take advantage of our nutrition services alone or in combination with personal training sessions. The Guilderland YMCA offers a variety of nutrition packages and classes to meet your needs. Linda Crowley is a Registered Dietitian with 25 years of experience as a clinical dietitian and nutrition educator for sports teams, children’s programs and colleges. Her approach is a practical, proactive one focusing on real-foods and meal planning for a healthier life-style. Seven visit packages designed just for you are available. Below is just a few examples of the numerous packages we offer. ONLINE NUTRITION AND PHONE SUPPORT PACKAGE Too busy to meet one-on-one with our dietitian but desire support to tackle a nutrition issue? This package is perfect for the busy health-conscience individual who would like all the benefits of a nutrition consultation visit without leaving their own home or office. Includes an initial 1-hour phone session, daily e-mail support, and weekly phone calls so that you may have the accountability you need to achieve your nutrition goals. STOP DIETING, LIVE RIGHT! This package takes a life-style approach to losing weight rather than dieting. Includes healthier eating and exercise strategies. Meet with our dietitian for three sessions that total two hours and learn practical tips to make smart food choices. Spend two, one-hour sessions with a personal trainer to round out your total health package. A perfect combination to help you achieve your weight loss goals. HEALTHY MOM-TO-BE Thinking about becoming pregnant or pregnant already? This 3 session package includes an initial one-hour nutrition screening focused on determining areas for nutritional improvement and two 30-minute follow-up sessions. Advice on the must foods for pre-pregnancy nutrition, nutritional supplements, healthy weight status, and how to plan a healthy meal plan for conception through birth are provided.

VEGETARIAN VARIETY Following a vegetarian diet may provide many health advantages, however there are several nutrients that need special attention in order to eat healthfully. This package includes a nutrition assessment based on 3 days of food records and a 1-hour session with our dietitian to explain the results. Learn tips, techniques, and recipes to optimize your everyday eating plan to meet nutrient needs while following a vegetarian plan. NUTRITION FOR SENIORS As people age, body composition changes and so does your nutrition needs. Poor nutrition can lead to many diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. This 1-hour session with our dietitian evaluates your diet and develops an eating plan to help you look and feel younger! MEDICAL NUTRITION THERAPY Take control of your health by changing the way you eat. Manage diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, or celiac disease through improved nutrition. Our dietitian provides cutting edge nutrition information related to your medical issue and gives you the needed support and guidance to put into practice medically proven nutrition strategies. Meet with our dietitian initially for one-hour and return for a 30-minute follow-up appointment to get all of your questions answered.

Check what Community Caregivers services can do for you. Our volunteers can drive disabled, elderly, and non-driving persons for medical appointments, visits to family in nursing homes, etc. They can either accompany a client who needs assistance or do the shopping for such items as food, prescriptions, or personal items. Caregivers Respite provides a caring presence so individuals and families who care for someone dementia, a chronic illness or in endof-life care can enjoy a break from their caregiving responsibilities.

They’ll do chores and laundry – minor home repairs, carrying packages, trimming hedges, cleaning ower beds, planting, raking, mowing, organizing closets, unpacking boxes. PLUS – Referrals to other agencies, visitations to homebound people, telephone assurance and assistance with bill paying, completing forms.

Call us to learn what YOU can do for Community Caregivers when you join us to give your neighbors a helping hand.

They will prepare and deliver simple meals for individuals and families temporarily unable to provide for themselves, including delivering food from local food pantries. They can perform light housekeeping such as dusting, vacuuming and straightening up as needed – weekly, biweekly, or monthly.

Q A

with Deborah Larned, Louis DiCrescenzo, and Mike DiCrescenzo

Q. Where are you located? A. We are located at 3001 Furbeck Road, Altamont, NY 12009. Take Settles Hill Road to Furbeck Road. Approximately 12 miles west from the end of I-87 on route 20, We are very close to Altamont Orchards. Q. What year did your business start? A. We started reestablishing the vineyard and remodeling the winery in December of 2006. The vineyard had seen better days but we had faith that the vines were still fruitful and the location was one of a kind. In 2008, we formed Altamont Vineyard and Winery, focusing on the local supply of grapes and wines. Since that time, we have produced approximately 30 tons of grapes and roughly 1200 cases of wine to be sold. We are very lucky to be able to represent the local community and Albany County as it’s first and only vineyard and winery. We have found our neighbors appreciate seeing the vineyard being managed after many years sitting unattended. Q. What kind of wines do you sell? A. We produce and bottle wines made from hybrid grapes grown on the premises. The grapes planted have been developed to sustain the cold-harsh winters and wet-humid summers. Vines were planted starting in 1981 to 1996 as experiments by Larry Grossi, who opened Larry’s Vineyard and Farm Winery in 1988. We have a white wine resembling a Riesling called Edelweiss, which Larry also made and is still very popular, and St. Pepin, a cold-hearty grape variety developed at the University of Minnesota by Elmer Swenson. We also have a Cabernet-style

Altamont Vineyard & Winery red called Passione, a blend of DeChaunac and St. Croix; a Burgundy-style red called Leon Millot; two sweet wines, Elefante and Spider’s Rose; two types of Cayuga White one of which is oak aged and Patience, a blend of white wine grapes featuring citrus and herbaceous tones. Q. Are all the wines made from grapes grown at your vineyard? A. This year all our wines are made from grapes grown in our vineyard. We are currently working with Wagner Farms, a vineyard in Seneca Lake, to create more varieties for next year. We are in the process of making Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay and Riesling. We have the red grapes hand-picked and white grapes mechanically picked, crushed and pressed for the highest quality.

Q. Do you offer tastings and tours? A. We offer free tastings Friday, Saturday, and Sunday noon to 5 pm or by appointment. Vineyard tours will start in May and winery tours are available by appointment.

Q. When are you open? A. The store is open Friday through Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Q. What are some of your biggest challenges? A. We are at the mercy of Mother Nature, which is a huge challenge, especially as we try to reestablish a decades old vineyard to the health it should be. There are 23 different grape varieties in our vineyard, which all require a different kind of care. We’re a small operation with a limited budget. There are only three of us, so we all work long hours and depend on our friends and family, especially during harvest season. Q. What makes you keep at it? A. Love of the land and it’s challenges. Living so close to nature and watching the vines grow each year makes it very rewarding. And to taste the wines evolve over the winter is quite fulfilling. Looking forward to see the reaction when patrons taste wines grown, produced, and bottled in their hometown. We invite you to taste our passion and visit before the holidays. Wine makes a great gift and being locally produced adds to the flavor.

Team Up For Literacy: Training Volunteers to Teach Make Guilderland Count! - Take Language and Life Skills to Adult Learners Part in the 2010 Census Join us this March and April for a rewarding volunteer opportunity! The Guilderland Public Library, in partnership with Literacy New York: Greater Capital Region, has been awarded a two-year Adult Literacy Education grant of $30,926 from the New York State Library, New York State Education Department. If you’ve been looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity that can change someone’s life, here’s your chance! Our partnership seeks to recruit and train volunteers to become tutors in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) or BL (Basic Literacy, primarily reading and writing) – we provide the training, the materials at no cost (the grant will cover your $35 materials fee), and ongoing professional support and workshops to help you work effectively with adult students who want to improve their English. With funds from the grant, the Library is also adding literacy materials to our growing collection, all of which you can check out with your library card. Participants who complete the seven-session training will be matched with one student or will work with another tutor to lead small-group instruction sessions, depending on your interest. Your commitment to our “team” is just one or two hours a week – but the results can last a lifetime! Why not give the gift of literacy to someone this season? Our first tutor-training dates are: March 9, 15, 17, 23, 25, 30, and April 1. All sessions will meet 9:30 am – 12:30 pm at the Library. To register, call Literacy New York at 452-3382.

Thursday, January 14, 7 pm Assemblymember Jack McEneny explains why we should all take part in the 2010 Census when the forms arrive in our mailboxes. Every ten years the Census Bureau takes a detailed tally of the entire population; this count affects everything from funding for schools and hospitals to your representation in government. Make sure you’re counted! All information collected is strictly confidential. The population count assures that we will get the services and benefits we deserve through 2020. Assemblymember McEneny was chair of the US Census for the Capital District in 1980 and is well qualified to describe the impact and benefits of census participation in our community.

INDEPENDENT STUDIES & PATIENT SURVEYS FAVOR CHIROPRACTIC CARE FOR BACK AND NECK PAIN.

BY DR. JENNIFER L. NOONAN, SPINAL WELLNESS CENTER 80% of all people will experience back pain in their lifetime. That is an irrefutable fact. With sedentary jobs and obesity being so prevalent, this number is expected to rise. Over the years, study after study has shown chiropractic to be the most effective form of treatment for back pain of all kinds, having greater long-term benefits than any other treatment. It’s great to have all these studies on our side, but what do our patients have to say? A study, which surveyed more than 14,000 consumers, was conducted by the Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center. According to the report, the respondents tried a variety of treatments and rated them on how helpful and satisfied they were with the results. The conclusion? “Eighty-eight percent of those who tried chiropractic manipulation said it helped a lot, and 59 percent were ‘completely’ or ‘very’ satisfied with their chiropractor. Chiropractic works and people like it, that is the bottom line. Conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, facet syndrome, whiplash, and chronic mechanical pain syndrome are all treated successfully in my office. Many times, chiropractic is the only treatment to give significant broad-based long-term relief. One of the reasons for our success is that we treat the cause (the spinal dysfunction and nerves) rather than covering up the problem with drugs which, in essence just ignores it and allows it progress further. With a variety of techniques at my disposal, I treat patients according to their specific condition. No “cookie cutter care. I urge people to at least come in for a consultation and get information on their specific problem. What have you got to lose other than your pain? For a complimentary consultation please call 869-3415 today. Dr. Noonan resides here in Guilderland with her husband David, who is also a Chiropractor, and her sons Connor, Noah and Aiden. She is a graduate of Guilderland High School, SUNY Cortland and New York Chiropractic College. She has served families in the community with chiropractic for over 17 years.

Seven Tips to Help You Choose a Martial Arts School for Your Child by Bob Esposito Capital Northeast Martial Arts

Selecting a martial arts school for your child is not difficult, if you know a few hints that will help you find a school your child will enjoy and teach him or her the lessons most important to you. Choosing a martial arts school begins with how you want your child to benefit from the training. Martial arts lessons at most full-time professional schools can include training in self-defense and bully and abductor avoidance; physical fitness to lose weight, discipline, self-esteem, concentration and leadership skills. Remember, because martial arts are not a commodity product, martial arts schools can be very different. Some may emphasize more of these benefits than others. Many schools include age-appropriate programs for preschoolers, as well. Tip #1: The style of martial arts that a school teaches is not that important. What’s important is that the lessons are structured appropriately for children, making the experience fun and exciting as well as educational. Tip #2: Be a wise consumer and take some time to talk to parents of children at martial arts schools in your community. It’s very likely one of your child’s friends is taking lessons or knows someone that does.

Tip #3: Ask local schools if they have any external events scheduled, such as a demonstration, tournament or other student activities, that you can attend and observe with your child. Tip #4: Do some research. Many schools have Web sites, which have answers to many of your questions, before you call the school. Don’t hesitate to check with the Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau about schools you are considering. Full-time, commercial schools may offer more than a part-time instructor, but that doesn’t mean the full-time program is better. Tip #5: Take advantage of the free introductory lesson or trial offers that most schools offer. It can be very helpful to determine if your child shows interest in martial arts before you make a commitment. During your introductory visit, take some time to inspect the school for safety and security. Make sure the floors are well padded and the classroom is well lit. Observe a random class: How do instructors interact with the students and how students react to instruction? Martial arts are based on respect and positive attitudes, so look for those qualities in students and instructors. Tip #6: Martial arts schools are structured similarly to a

private educational institution. There are various levels of curriculum – beginning, intermediate and advanced – of various lengths of time and tuition rates. At some point in the introductory process, you will probably be offered an agreement. Read it carefully to understand you investment thoroughly. Tip #7: Wise consumers also use their instinct to make wise choices. Regardless of what products and services you are selecting, your “sixth-sense should always be operating. If something doesn’t seem right, then it probably isn’t; and you’ll be better off moving to the next school on your list. There’s much more you can learn about choosing a martial arts school for your child than just looking on the Internet. Remember, your primary goal is to find a teacher and classes that your child likes and a curriculum that can change your child’s life for the better.
