Notes from the Supervisor’s Office
A
s we approach the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, I’d like to take this opportunity to ask all of our residents to be especially conscious of all of their neighbors moving around Town at this busy time of year. Please be careful as you drive or walk, and let us all make safety a primary concern for this season. I With the winter season approaching, residents should remember the seasonal recreational opportunities that we offer in Guilderland’s parks. When the ground is bare, the trails in Tawasentha Park, the Winter Recreation Area, and the Community Gardens are available for hiking. When there is snow on the ground, the same trails are available for snowshoeing and ungroomed cross country skiing, and sledding is offered at the Winter Recreation Area. Groomed trails for cross-country skiing are offered at Western Turnpike Golf Course. Limited amounts of rental equipment are available. Please contact the Parks and Recreation Office at 456-3150 for information on what specific activities and equipment are available on any given day.
Don’t forget to make your 2011 Custom Family Photo Calendar!
Just give us 13 of your favorite photos* and we’ll give you a calendar you’ll cherish long after the year is over. *Copyright restrictions apply

Guilderland’s Western Turnpike Golf Course will be offering a new gift opportunity this Christmas season. 2011 season memberships will be available at a special discounted rate for those who pay their membership fees by December 15, 2010. This represents an extra discount in addition to the normal early bird discount offered for membership fees paid by February 1. Total savings amount to a reduction of almost 20% off regular seasonal membership rates. Please call the Parks Office at 456-3150 for more information. The difficult economic environment that has plagued the nation and the state and the region for the past two or more years has created a variety of issues for our residents. The Town has worked hard throughout this challenging period to maintain essential services without adding to the tax burden of our residents. Stringent expense controls have been accompanied by the ongoing exploration of ways in which Town departments can work together to increase the efficiency of Town operations without compromising the efficient delivery of services. We have also worked with both unionized and non-unionized Town employees to participate in our efforts, and as a result, there will be no cost-of-living increases provided to Guilderland employees in 2011. These efforts have combined to produce positive results, and Guilderland will enter 2011 with a Town budget that maintains a strong program of municipal services while one again requiring no increase in the general Town tax rate. The holidays are a special time of year for Guilderland residents of all backgrounds and traditions. However you may celebrate in your own household, I would like to take this opportunity to express to you, on behalf of all our Town’s employees and elected officials, my sincere good wishes to all Guilderland’s families for a safe and enjoyable holiday season and for a New Year ahead that will bring happiness and success. Message from the Chamber...
D
ecember is here; I know how busy you are- I do hope you slow down and enjoy the holiday with family and loved ones, and I also hope you have remembered to shop local. I am certainly trying. The chamber coordinates some charitable giving through the Holiday Angel program to benefit Guilderland School District families, and now the Salvation Army kettle Challenge; (Guilderland Chamber and Crossgates Mall vs. Colonie Chamber and Colonie Center). This keeps us busy, and if any of you are looking to volunteer at a kettle, call me! We can’t let Colonie win!

The Kitten Who Thought He Was a Fish A Special Seasonal Event at GPL
“The Kitten Who Thought He Was a Fishâ€? is just one of the stories contained in a marvelous new book – This Vet Has Tales – written by local veterinarian Dr. John “Jackâ€? Brennan, DVM, who will speak at a free Local Notable Author Event at the Guilderland Public Library on Friday, December 17 at 7 pm. In the words of one reviewer, Dr. Brennan’s book is “lively, endearing, informative and a pleasure to read from beginning to end. He discusses his education as a vet, and his practice in the animal hospital he founded near Albany. He introduces the reader to a variety of animal and the people with whom they live. Many of the stories are amusing, but – as with any medical practice – there is sadness as well.â€? Dr. Brennan will speak his experiences as a vet ‌ and as a recently published author. With a practice that began during the Eisenhower Administration, Dr. Brennan has witnessed the changes and growth of Albany County. As farmland transitioned to family homes, his practice underwent a subtle but unmistakable shift, one that’s reflected in the story he relates. Remarking on this aspect of the book, another reviewer commented, “If you enjoy history as described by those who lived it, you will treasure this book.â€? Many who read this article know Dr. Brennan as a fixture in an around Guilderland, and will be delighted to find that he has written this account. Others will simply be pleased to find that a local vet has penned an animal-centric portrait of the area that provides a wealth of amusing insight into the foibles of animals ‌ and the people who care for them. Either way, all will enjoy the warm and humorous flavor of Dr. Brennan’s presentation on December 17. Copies of This Vet Has Tales will be available for sale after the Q&A portion of the program, and Dr. Brennan will be more than happy to sign them. Please note that this book makes a great gift for animal lovers everywhere. The Guilderland Public Library is located at 2228 Western Avenue, Guilderland. Call 456-2400 x 12 for more information, or visit the Library's website at www.guilpl.org. Become a Facebook Fan of the Library, follow the Library on Twitter (@GuilderlandLib), and listen to the Library’s online radio station, Radio GPL. It all starts at guilpl.org.

We Need Just Three Things In Life Thanksgiving is behind us and we move toward the New Year. As I have been getting older, time moves through holidays and family celebrations with increasing velocity. It has been said that we need just three things in life: something to do, something to look forward to and someone to love. I believe that this does in fact account for most of our emotional needs; it really does ring true. If you are busy, looking forward to future events and you have someone to share it all with, well, that’s a jackpot worth more than any in Vegas. As you look forward to the holiday season, take the time to enjoy the anticipation and be selfless to others. Take the time to enjoy the excitement of your children and friends. Lead by example for your children and help them do something nice for someone else in the spirit of the giving season. If, like me, you are hosting an event, don’t stress too much, the people coming love you and will enjoy being a guest. Enjoy and be grateful that you have people to love and share events with. When 2011 arrives, use the opportunity of the new start. In consideration of “something to doâ€? remember that you require a tripod of three main elements for balance in your life. Physical activity, mental activity and great spirit. Most call them body, mind and soul. As corny as it sounds we really do need them together. For some people it is walking the dog, ZZZ 8SVWDWH5HKDE FRP doing Sudoku, and reading a book to their child even though the day was long and challenging. For others it may be a three mile run, solving a calculus problem and donating time to the local food bank. Whatever it is for you, make it happen each day that you can. Use the new year to resolve to balance these :DVKLQJWRQ $YH 5HQVVHODHU 1< KLQJWRQ $YH 5HQVVHODHU 1 three elements of your life. Too many local businesses are struggling to stay afloat these days and why go out of town when we have so many different places to shop right here?” states Erika Gauthier, Program and Membership Manager for The Guilderland Chamber of Commerce. “Many of these retailers and shops are the same people who give back to the community numerous mes a year and support many different organiza ons. We should all do our part. It’s really very simple. If we are going to spend money, we should spend it right here.” Gauthier went on to say. The Latest News from the Gingerbread Public Library The Guilderland Public Library has been transformed for the holiday season into the Gingerbread Public Library! From special events, such as the Gingerbread Storytime on December 11 and the Annual Holiday Concert on December 19, to the decorations throughout the Library, it’s ginger and sugar (and free gingerbread men to our younger patrons) to celebrate the holidays. Here are just a few Gingerbread Public Library free activities coming up.
Gingerbread Storytime Kindergartners to Second Graders and their parents or caregivers are invited to come to the Gingerbread Public Library on Saturday, December 11, at 11 am, for a special Gingerbread Storytime! Children will make a small, non-edible gingerbread house to take home. Gingerbread is a yummy part of many stories, such as Hansel and Gretel. We’ll be reading and viewing some classics and some new, funny favorites, too. Please register for this Storytime by calling 456-2400 x 9.
Holiday Concert The singing group Suburban Sounds will hold their free, Annual Holiday Concert at the Library on Sunday, December 19, at 2 pm. This concert has become a favorite refuge from the weekend-beforeChristmas holiday hustle and bustle. Come and enjoy traditional carols – you might be asked to sing along – and newer selections that are gaining increasing popularity. This is a fun, relaxed concert for families. (Wearing of holiday apparel is encouraged!)
Please give to the Gingerbread Public Library’s Annual Giving Tree You rely on the Guilderland Public Library’s vast collection of books, music, online services, free programs, and cultural events. And now we ask: Can we rely upon you to donate to our Giving Tree? You’ll help underwrite the many programs not supported by tax dollars that make the Guilderland Public Library the cultural center of our community. Your Giving Tree gift supports events such as the Notable Author Speakers Series, the Annual Summer Reading Club, Literary Garden Events, Family Fun Days, and so many more. These are events that people throughout the community rely upon. So your holiday gift is a gift for yourself and the people of Guilderland. So next time you stop by the Library to pick up that book you wanted, or the DVD your family is going to spend an evening watching, please stop by the Giving Tree and make a donation. Your Giving Tree gift is tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. The Guilderland Public Library is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.
Stuck for a Gift for that Person Who’s Tough to Shop For? So were we until we came across the coolest – well, warm, actually – gingerbread-themed gifts: Cozy Cookies, the soft, cuddly, plush Cookie you can warm up! Stick one of these Gingerbread Boys – or Gingerbread Girls – in the microwave, take it out, and you’ll fill the room with the wonderful smell of gingerbread and the recipient’s heart with holiday joy! There are Gingerbread Chef hot-pads as well; plant a hot plate or pan on the chef’s face and the gentle holiday scent comes through.
16
These really hot items are available at the Library: Gingerbread Boys & Girls are $12 apiece, and the Gingerbread Chef is just $3. Proceeds from these sales go to the Library’s Staff Development Fund. The Guilderland Public Library is located at 2228 Western Avenue, Guilderland. Call 456-2400 x 12 for more information, or visit the Library’s website at www.guilpl.org.

CHIROPRACTICS FOR SENIORS RESEARCH SHOWS WIDE USAGE AND SATISFACTION By Dr. Jennifer L. Noonan, Spinal Wellness Center, Western Ave, Guilderland
M
y heart is greatly saddened watching seniors around the country having to worry, fight and hope not to be disregarded and rationed out of healthcare and hence the quality of life they so richly deserve. I care about each of my patients, but there is a special place at the Spinal Wellness Center for all of our seniors. So here is a ray of hope for those who may be suffering from arthritis-related pain or immobility. CHIROPRACTIC IS A PROVEN SAFE AND EFFECTIVE TREATMENT FOR YOUR PAIN AND STIFFNESS. A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine has found that Chiropractic was not only the most sought after form of alternative treatment for patients with rheumatoid, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia, but it was also among those found to be most helpful for these conditions. 73% of patients studied found chiropractic care to be helpful, placing chiropractic second behind spiritual healing. The American Geriatrics Society listed chiropractic care among the non-pharmacologic strategies for pain management, which carries few, if any adverse effects. (Whereas anti-inflammatories kill tens of thousands annually.) In fact, the patients who received chiropractic care had fewer hospitalizations and used fewer medications than patients receiving medical care only! That is an extremely impressive and important statistic. My treatment takes into consideration the nature of the aging spine and any abnormalities present to provide a safe and effective experience. Through the use of gentle adjustive techniques, appropriate stretching and exercise programs, and nutritional recommendations, pain is reduced, flexibility and mobility are improved, and degeneration is minimized. Patients are then able to remain active, feeling fully alive. Chiropractic can add life to your years and years to your life! For more information please schedule a complimentary consultation by calling 869-3415
Dr. Noonan resides here in Guilderland with her husband David, who is also a Chiropractor, and her sons Connor, Noah and Aiden. She is a graduate of Guilderland High School, SUNY Cortland and New York Chiropractic College. She has served families in the community with chiropractic for over 17 years.
Call 869-3415 for a consultation.

This month our theme is gingerbread! We will have displays of gingerbread houses and gingerbread people. Two of our book discussions this month focus on classic gingerbread stories. Who says “Run, run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread _____?” Is it a) a man, b) a boy, c) a girl, d) a doll, e) a friend f) a cowboy or g) a pirate? At the Library the answer is all of them!
Authors Jan Brett, Lisa Campbell Ernst, Richard Egielski, Janet Squires Susan Tews, Kristin Kladstrup and Matt Tavares have all written fun books expanding on the classic tale.
The Brothers Grimm featured gingerbread in the classic tale of Hansel and Gretel. Their story has also been reimagined. Local illustrator and author Will Moses gives us Hansel and Gretel: a retelling. Vivian Vande Velde writes about Tales from the Brothers Grimm and the Sisters Weird.

Join Us on Facebook! www.facebook.com/ourtowneguilderland Adam Gidwitz follows Hansel and Gretel on additional adventures in Grimm Fairy Tale Land in A Tale Dark and Grimm. And, my favorite, a story written by the witch (transcribed by Keith McGowan), The Witch’s Guide to Cooking with Children.
In 2010 mention of gingerbread would be complete without referring to Gingy, the brave and enduring gingerbread man from the Shrek movies and video games.
The Library owns DVDs of Shrek, Shrek2, and Shrek the Third. The latest video, Shrek Forever After will be available after its December release date. The Library also owns the Shrek Forever After videogame, the holiday musical CD “Shrek the Halls and the CD for Shrek – the original cast recording. And, although the story doesn’t include Gingy, we also own Shrek! by William Steig, the original book that inspired the animated movie.

And, of course, the Library is the place to go to borrow cookbooks on baking gingerbread! And if you are feeling really creative and want to make your own gingerbread house, check out Susan Mateson’s The Gingerbread Architect: recipes and blueprints for twelve classic American homes.
