pring is here, with all the usual buzz of seasonal activity taking place around us. People are busy tending to their lawns and gardens, and all sorts of home improvement projects are underway. Baseball and softball seasons are in full swing, and the trails and playgrounds in our Town parks are in regular use. Western Turnpike’s fairways and greens are filled with golfers. I think it’s fair to say that most people in Guilderland really enjoy the springtime. Guilderland’s Spring Household Hazardous Waste Day event will take place at the Town Highway Department Garage on French’s Mill Road in Guilderland Center from 8:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 12. Residents can take advantage of drive-through service at this event. Load your vehicle and bring it to the Highway Garage, where it will be unloaded for you, with all the materials you clear out from your garage or shed, basement or attic, all disposed of in a safe and environmentally appropriate manner. In order to participate in this event, you must present a coupon verifying Guilderland residency. These coupons are available without cost from either the Town Transfer Station on French’s Mill Road or from the Town Clerk’s office at Town Hall during regular business hours. You can check on the materials that may be brought to the event at the Guilderland website, www.townofguilderland.org. If you have any questions about the event, please contact the Transfer Station at 861-6776. Registration is open and continuing for the many popular summer programs offered by Guilderland’s Parks and Recreation Department. Both a half-day summer day camp program and a wide range of sports and activity camps are available for residents. A brochure listing and describing these programs was recently mailed to Town residents. All of the details are also available at www.guilderlandrec. com. You can register for these programs on-line, by mail, or in person at the Parks and Recreation Office on Route 146, across from the entrance to Tawasentha Park. These programs often fill early, so please do not delay your registration. If you have any questions, you can call the Parks Department at 456-3150. The golf season at Guilderland’s Western Turnpike Golf Course is in “full swing” on a course that is in good shape thanks to our mild winter. Guilderland residents enjoy discounted greens fees

when they present a resident identification card, which can be obtained at the Pro Shop at the golf course upon presentation of identification showing Town residency. For information on greens fees, course conditions, or tee times, please contact the Pro Shop at 456-0786. The Guilderland Performing Arts Center has released the schedule for its 33rd annual series of summer concerts at Tawasentha Park. The summer season will open with the Nervosity Concert, the “Battle of the High School Bands” at 6:00 on Friday, June 15. The annual Thursday evening summer concert series will begin with a performance by the Guilderland Town Band on Thursday, June 21. A complete listing of the Thursday evening concerts can be found on the Town website, www.townofguilderland.org. “Mud Mania”, a family-friendly obstacle run for children and adults of all ages, will again be held at Tawasentha Park on Saturday, June 16. There will be races for various age and “skill” levels during the day, as well as food, music and family activities for participants. There is more information available on the Town website, and you can register online for the event at www.guilderlandrec.com. If Nature does not provide mud for the event, our Parks Department will! I’d like to acknowledge the efforts of our local Boy Scouts in Guilderland in helping our Parks Department staff to maintain the trail network in Tawasentha Park. Guilderland Scouts have put in time each spring for the past six years clearing trail areas, surfacing trails, and building culverts and retaining walls. We really appreciate the efforts of these Scouts and their adult leaders! With Guilderland abuzz with its usual high level of springtime activity, I urge everyone to travel safely around Town, and to be especially mindful of pedestrians and cyclists in their travels.

IS IT REALLY TRUE THAT THE AVERAGE REAL ESTATE AGENT ONLY SELLS 8 HOMES A YEAR?

I

t may be unbelievable but yes it is true! I was reading a 2011 survey the other day and it indicated the typical real estate agent only did 8 transactions in 2010. The number is mind boggling. It means that the agent you hire may likely sell less than one home a month, yet they are negotiating what is probably the largest financial transaction you will be involved in. The bottom line is if you are thinking about hiring an agent, one of the first questions you better ask is “How many homes did you sell last year?” The report was enlightening in many ways. One of the other things that struck me was the largest expense of most real estate agents. You would probably guess that the largest expense for someone that sells homes for a living would be marketing or advertising. Nope! It was auto expenses. Think about that. The person you hired to sell your home likely spends more on their car then they do marketing your home! That may start to explain why so few homes are sold by the typical agent. In 2011, my system for selling homes was successful in closing over 100 transactions. How did I do it? By realizing the market has shifted and to sell homes effectively you need to shift with the market. The days of putting a sign in the ground and getting an offer the same day were largely over in 2006. Today, getting a home sold is about marketing, placement, and systems. I can tell you my largest expense has nothing to do with my car. My largest expense by far is marketing and advertising as it should be. If you want to sell your home you need to differentiate it from the other homes on the market.

On June 15, the book “The New Rise of Real Estate” that I co-authored with some of the greatest real estate minds in the country will be released. The book details a few of the methods we utilize to differentiate our listings and sell over 100 homes a year. Where are you located? We just opened our new location last month at 2261 Western Ave. Guilderland, New York where we have renovated a historic Victorian home just West of the Guilderland Library on the right hand side.

What is A Gracious Event? More than your average wedding and event planner, A Gracious Event is an all-inclusive special occasion service, fulfilling all of your wedding and event needs, including design, planning, and orchestrating. Garden wedding guidance and destination weddings are my passions. I invite you to visit our unique wedding center where you can relax and seek inspiration in the bridal library, try on a beautiful selection of garden wedding gowns and attendant dresses by Dessy, and even browse an array of elegant invitations for the perfect introduction to your wedding experience. We will help you plan your dream wedding whether it’s around the corner or around the globe.

Why did you start A Gracious Event? After 30 years of hosting weddings at the Appel Inn, I realized that professional guidance should be available to all. Couples can benefit from guidance at every level – whether it’s coming in and brainstorming with me for an hour or having my team help with all of the details from beginning to end. We added the Sandals luxury Inclusive resorts to our services, as we believe that everyone should have an amazing honeymoon. Visiting Sandals, I was impressed by their amazing value, attention to detail, and their philanthropic philosophy. They were the perfect partner for A Gracious Event – also a fabulous destination for renewal of vows, family vacations and destination weddings.

What does a wedding planner actually do? Whether it’s a consultation, full planning, or just day of coordination, we give couples the resources, knowledge, and help they need to plan their dream wedding. We can and will do anything and everything to make sure their time of engagement and their wedding day are enjoyable and stress ¬free. We make sure that the couple really feels like a VIP guest at their own wedding. We will help plan out their budget, find the perfect venue for them, help them take their vision to reality, orchestrate their day, take care of any problems and much, much more.

How does a wedding planner add to the budget? Wedding planners can actually save you money – and certainly save you time and stress. We have the experience to rapidly help guide you to the best professionals for your budget. The more experienced the planner, the more contacts and knowledge to turn your vision into a reality. Time after time you hear about someone who thought he or she could do it alone or with the help of a friend or family member. And then after the wedding you hear how the couple wished they had used a professional planner.

Do you support local charities? I believe very strongly in giving back. For years at The Appel Inn we have been supporting the YMCA and various other charities. With A Gracious Event we will be continuing that practice. Right now we have a fabulous search on for a couple getting married June 9th of this year in need of a day of coordination. The fee will be donated to the Habitat for Humanity.

What do you love most about the business? It’s hard to pick just one thing. I love to create amazing memories for the couple and their guests – it makes me happy to see the genuine smiles we helped put on their faces. It’s always great when I trip over a couple whose wedding I helped with 20 years ago and still see them happily married. I feel privileged to know that I got to be a part of making someone’s special day even better than imagined.

Is there education or certification available to event planners? Yes, I have attained Master Wedding Vendor accreditation through the Association of Bridal Consultants of which there are only 10 in the country, as well as Accredited Bridal Consultant. I am one of a very few members to have dual accreditation out of the 5000 members of ABC. I also require that my assistants be members of Association of Bridal Consultants and continually take part in continuing education. I believe their favorite parts are the Sandals Familiarization trips. I do not believe in representing anything I have not seen. Therefore, I have just finished visiting all 17 Sandals resorts and 4 islands so that I can offer the best guidance to my clients. I am Sandals Certified as well as one of the few in the Albany area that are certified Sandals Weddingmoon specialist.

Are you known for anything special? We have always been known for service at The Appel Inn and that is what we are taking to A Gracious Event.

What do you think is your greatest challenge with the business? The greatest challenge will be educating couples on how event planners really help keep the wedding planning a fun and enjoyable experience as well as keeping them on budget not adding to it. And no matter how great the plans are, the day of the wedding couples, family and friends should be enjoying and creating amazing memories letting a professional worry about the details and orchestration.

Time for Spring Cleaning....of your smile! Your spring cleaning may just need to extend past cleaning the cobwebs out of your home or reorganizing the garage. It may be time for a literal spring cleaning‌ of your teeth! How long has it been since your last cleaning? Remember, it’s recommended that you have a cleaning at least every six months. Sometimes we think we can get away with waiting longer than six months between dental visits. You may believe that you clean your teeth well enough on your own. You probably do a great job of caring for your teeth if you brush and floss at least twice daily but we all naturally develop plaque on our teeth from the foods and drinks we consume daily. When you glance at your smile in the mirror and think all looks well, it is important to know that there are some dental conditions that may be present without a single symptom. Gum disease, the infection of the bones and gums that surround the teeth, can be symptomless especially in its early stages. Oral cancer is another often symptomless disease that your dentist can spot early during a routine examination. So no matter how pretty your pearly whites look to you, it really is necessary to get another set of eyes to evaluate your oral health every six months. Remember, a routine dental cleaning and checkup is usually a relatively quick appointment lasting less than an hour. his week I am using my writing space to tell you about my students below, who have demonstrated excellent character in pursuing success at the NewYork StateTaekwondo Championships in Queens on March 31st. Competition raises intensity and improves skill. These fine students worked very hard and persevered through the scrutiny of judges that I saw working at the National Championships last year! It was awesome to see them overcome their fears and perform excellently. The team brought home 5 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.

O

nce again, I submitted this month’s article at the ninth hour, mostly because I couldn’t drag myself away from my garden. So at the end of a day of bending, pulling, pushing and lifting, how does one come away with minimal back and body aches? 1. Don’t jump right into it. Remember, this is an activity your body hasn’t done for 7 loooong months. Take it slow and warm up a little. Perform a few upper body and low back stretches to prepare for the work ahead. It only takes a few minutes and will be well worth it. 2. Take frequent breaks. Trust me, the work will be there when you get back. Work in 20- 30 minute increments. Go in the house and stretch or even apply an ice pack. Then do another 20-30 minutes. 3. Change positions frequently. Use a knee pad to kneel or sit on. Don’t bend over at the waist! Changing positions frequently will prevent one muscle group from getting over worked. So alternate kneeling, sitting and going on all fours. This way, different muscles and joints share the load with minimal strain to your back. 4. Avoid the bend/twist and twist/throw combos. These movements are very typical when throwing mulch and moving heavy urns or bags of dirt and fertilizer. These are also the movements most likely to cause injury. Most importantly, if you have pain call The Spinal Wellness Center as quickly as possible. An injury that sits around because you “thought it would get better� is much more difficult to treat. he Albany NY / Western MA / Southern VT Affiliate of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) and Guilderland Key Club are raising awareness about this devastating genetic neurological disease through their community Team Hope Walk! Huntington's disease (HD) is a devastating, hereditary, degenerative brain disorder that results in a loss of cognitive, behavioral and physical control, and for which, presently, there is no cure. HD slowly diminishes the affected individual's ability to walk, think, talk and reason. Symptoms usually appear in an individual between 30 and 50 years of age and progress over a 10 to 25 year period. Cases of juvenile HD have been diagnosed in children as young as two years of age. Eventually, a person with HD becomes totally dependent upon others for his or her care. More than 30,000 people in the United States are currently diagnosed with HD. Each of their siblings and children has a 50 percent risk of developing the disease, therefore 250,000 are at risk. Although medications can relieve some symptoms in certain individuals, research has yet to find a means of conquering or even slowing the deadly progression of HD. The Team Hope Walk is HDSA’s largest national grassroots fundraising event, which takes place in over 80 cities across the U.S and has raised over $3 million since its inception in 2007. Thousands of families, friends, coworkers, neighbors and communities walk together each year to support HDSA’s fight to improve the lives of people affected by HD and their families.
