Notes from the Supervisor’s Office
W
elcome to Fall in Guilderland, New York. Cooling weather, the routine of a new school year, falling leaves, and shortening days signal the change of seasons that makes our area so interesting to live in.
Guilderland’s annual leaf pick-up program begins in October, commencing on Monday, October 19. Town Highway Department trucks will circulate through our residential neighborhoods to help with residents’ fall cleanup activities. We ask that everyone cooperate with our hard-working crews by following some simple guidelines. Please place only leaves and pine needles at the edge of the pavement in the areas where leaf vacuuming is done, or place bagged leaves at the roadside in those areas where the vacuum cannot operate. We also ask that everyone be mindful of safety. Please do not create a hazard for others by making leaf piles too high, or by situating them in a spot where they could potentially limit the vision of cyclists, drivers, and pedestrians. Specific leaf pickup dates for different streets are listed in the “Guilderland TowNews” newsletter that was mailed to Guilderland households in early September. The leaf pickup schedule is also available on the Town website, www.townofguilderland.org. If you have any questions about the program, please call the Guilderland Highway Department at 861-5108.
We are working hard on Guilderland’s Town budget for 2011. These are challenging times at the national, state, and local levels, and we are working hard to maintain a high level of Town services without increasing Guilderland’s Town tax rate. The Supervisor’s Preliminary Budget was made public on September 30, and budget workshops are scheduled to be held at Town Hall on October 14 and 28. The Preliminary Budget is available online at the Town website, and may also be viewed at the Town Clerk’s office. A Final Budget will be discussed and voted on by the Town Board at its meeting on November 4. The Sixth Annual Guilderland Police Department Halloween Extravaganza will be held on the evening of Saturday, October 30 at Guilderland Town Hall. This family-friendly event is targeted primarily at pre-schoolers and primary grade children, but all are welcome. The event will feature a Halloween Puppet Safety Show in the Town Board Room, digital fingerprinting, games, and refreshments in the building lobby, and the ever-popular “Haunted Courtyard” on the lawn in front of Town Hall. Costumes- the more creative the better- are welcome on guests of all ages. I’d like to thank all the volunteers from our public safety staff who make this event possible every year. Please call Amy Boyt of the Police Department at 356-1980, ext. 1030, if you have questions about this event. The storm drainage studies that the Town engaged a consultant to prepare for the McKownville and Blackberry Estates neighborhoods have been completed, and are being reviewed by the Town Board. The study reports indicate that the problems are indeed serious and that solutions are costly. The Town will use these studies to direct efforts to assist residents in these neighborhoods and to seek funding assistance for remediation programs. A $500,000 grant from the NY State Department of Transportation, secured with assistance from State Senator Neil Breslin, will be utilized to begin the remediation process in McKownville.

Fall in Guilderland is still a time for our residents to enjoy outdoor activities. Our Western Turnpike Golf Course is open for a pleasant round of golf in the crisp fall air, and there are some special rates available for our residents at this time of year. Please call the Pro Shop at 456-0786 for information or to book a tee time. Also, the 5-mile network of hiking trails in Tawasentha Park is open, and offers some spectacular autumn views in addition to healthy exercise for our residents. Kenneth Runion, Town Supervisor

Keep your child active in extra-curricular sports and activities. Your child will make plenty of new friends and learn skills which can build confidence. Make sure the activities are healthy and are focused on character development. Also make sure that the teachers and coaches are experts at working with children and building confidence. If you pick the right activity, then you will notice a change in your child’s confidence almost immediately. Is your child a confident individual? If so, then the next step is to speak with your child about anti-bullying strategies. Here are five strategies that you should review with your child: 1. Assert yourself. Have your child practice standing tall and using a strong voice saying: “That’s teasing. Stop it.” or “Stop making fun of me. It’s mean.” 2. Use “I want.” Role-play with your child by having him or her address you (the bully) by saying: “I want you to leave me alone,” or “I want you to stop teasing me.” 3. Question it. Have your child practice responding to an insult with a non-defensive question: “Why would you say that?” or “Why would you want to tell me I am dumb and hurt my feelings?” 4. Ignore it. Bullies love it when their teasing upsets their victims, so help your child find a way to not let his or her tormentor get to him/ her. Pretend they’re invisible, walk away without looking at them, quickly look at something else and laugh, or look completely uninterested. 5. Make Fun of the Teasing. Teach your child how to reply to bullies by saying something like: “Wow, you are so smart because you pick on other kids.” Or, “Did you think of that all on your own?” Remember, the key to dealing with bullies is all about how confident your child feels. The strategies above only work if your child is confident enough to say them. Role-playing is only half of the lesson. You child must be exposed to enough rolemodels and equipped with the proper amount of stimulants that increase confidence.
Conclusion
Like it or not, almost every child will come face-to-face with a bully. If you follow the tips in this article, you will equip your child with the skills necessary to deal with bullying. Although bullying cannot be prevented, it can be limited. Children will become more resilient as they overcome obstacles and build more skills. Bullying is one obstacle that your child can overcome. Q. What do you love most about the business? Q. Are you known for anything special? A. Our teaching staff has many years of experience and we always try to bring our love of dance into each and every class. We are committed to providing a supportive learning environment for all of our students. The studio has 2 large dance floors and a sizable waiting room with big observation windows to each floor. Observation of every class is welcome at all times. Q. What hours are you open? A. We have classes Monday – Thursday evenings starting at 4:00pm and all day Saturday. We also offer some weekday morning classes. Q. Do you sponsor any local teams, if so which ones? A. Not yet, but certainly would be interested too!
A. Besides sharing our love for dance and always trying to provide a creative, quality dance education, it is the wonderful studio family that has developed throughout these years that I love most. It is a joy for all of us to see our students and parents happy and truly feeling like they are a part of this family. It is so amazing to now to be teaching children of kids we taught years ago!! Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business? A. As we grow, we always try to find ways to be sure our students receive personal attention. Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. In November, I am adding Gymnastics and Karate!! I have an additional new space in Charles Park in Building #4 which will be our Gymnastics and Karate Center.

PACK MULE OR STUDENT? By Dr. Jennifer L. Noonan, Spinal Wellness Center, Western Ave, Guilderland Am I the only parent who cringes each morning watching their children struggle to maneuver an overloaded back pack on and walk hunched and bent as they make their way to the bus stop? Not to mention accessories such as soccer bags and musical instruments adding to the load! If you haven’t actually weighed your child’s back pack you may want to and here’s why; According to the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission there are estimated to be 20,000 visits to emergency rooms, doctors’ offices and clinics as a result of backpack-related injuries. The injuries from backpacks range from neck, back and shoulder strains to contusions and even fractures from falls. Improper backpack use can also lead to chronic poor posture. Girls and younger kids are especially at risk for these injuries because they’re smaller and may carry loads that are heavier in proportion to their body weight. I am here to tell you that back, neck, nerve pain and headaches in children is not as uncommon as it used to be. I see these types of conditions all the time. The short-term effect can be as simple as muscle strain and minor joint restrictions or misalignments. The long-term effects of chronic strain can be much more serious and cause permanent structural problems and pain if left untreated. If a child complains of neck, back or shoulder pain-don’t ignore it. Get them seen by a chiropractor (preferably at The Spinal Wellness Center) as quickly as possible. The American Chiropractic Association recommends that a backpack should not weigh more than 10 percent of a child’s body weight. This figure may vary, however, based on the child’s body strength and fitness level. If you would like a complementary consultation with Dr. Noonan, please call 869-3415 and mention this ad.
Dr. Noonan resides here in Guilderland with her husband David, who is also a Chiropractor, and her sons Connor, Noah and Aiden. She is a graduate of Guilderland High School, SUNY Cortland and New York Chiropractic College. She has served families in the community with chiropractic for over 17 years.
