ell, we’ve already had some of every type of summer weather here in Guilderland already, from steamy heat to cool and dry, with pretty much every stop in between. In other words, a pretty typical summer in Upstate New York. I do urge our residents to be careful during the hot spells, and to be particularly cautious when it comes to children, the elderly, and to pets. As you enjoy the summer season, please be sure to take advantage of all the recreational opportunities you will find right here in Guilderland. I hear regularly from residents who enjoy different elements of our Town parks system, whether it is using the dog park facility at Nott Road Park, visiting one of the neighborhood –scale pocket parks located throughout Guilderland, hiking the trails in the Winter Recreation Area, or bringing their family to Tawasentha Park for basketball, tennis, or a swim in the Town Pool, followed by a picnic at one of the picnic areas scattered around the park. Thursday evenings in August offers you the opportunity to visit the Guilderland Performing Arts Center at Tawasentha for the tail end of our annual summer concert series. Bring a lawn chair, catch a breeze, and enjoy some varied musical program under the stars. The golf season at Guilderland’s Western Turnpike Golf Course continues to be enjoyable for players from all over the region. We have received positive feedback on the work done this year to improve course conditions. Remember that Guilderland residents are eligible for discounted greens fees! Please call the Pro Shop at 456-0786 with questions, or to book a tee time. A Town crew has been working this summer on constructing a new sidewalk on Elmwood Street in McKownville. This was a pilot project to see how well we could do this type of work. Our efforts were successful, and we anticipate doing other similar small projects in other parts of Town in the future. The economic downturn is not over, either nationally or regionally, but I find it heartening to see some evidence of private-sector confidence in Guilderland, as evidenced by several new development or redevelopment projects, both commercial and residential, going on along Western Avenue this summer. It’s been a while since we’ve seen that level of activity. Stay safe in your travels around Guilderland and beyond, and enjoy the rest of the summer season. Generally speaking, changes in interest rates and bond prices have an inverse relationship. Consider ABC Corp, which issues a 10-year, $1,000 bond with an annual coupon payment of 5%, or $50. If interest rates on similar bonds suddenly jump to 7%, a holder of the ABC Bond would be interested in selling her bond so that she can buy a bond paying the current rate of 7%. However, potential buyers of the ABC Bond would be aware that they could earn a higher coupon rate elsewhere, and will therefore offer the current owner a discounted price on the bond. As summer winds down it is timely to think about the upcoming physically active season for both students and adults. The National Youth Foundation for the Prevention of Athletic Injuries Inc. reports that dental injuries are the most common type of orofacial injuries resulting from participation in sports. Protecting your mouth and jaw from deliberate or accidental impact can be best accomplished by seeing your dentist for a custom fitted mouth protector or guard. Mouth guards may also prevent or reduce the harmful effects of a concussion in the presence of an injury to the jaw.

ome celebrate the 120th Altamont Fair! In such a fast paced world, remember a simpler time of family fun, when many families lived in villages and most lived on family farms. The Fair of those days represented an opportunity to visit with the neighbors to compare notes on growing vegetables, determine the best livestock, and the best pie. Not to mention enjoy great cotton candy, play some midway games, see the many attractions, take in some music and experience the rides! One hundred twenty years later, we are still doing that and more!

researching and repairing the Fair owned equipment, getting the gas powered machines tuned up and ready for live demonstrations of early hay baling, bone crushing and log sawing. There are two new exhibits this year – first, the windmill that pumps water. The windmill is totally refurbished thanks to a generous donation by John Van Wormer, and illustrates how farms pumped water without electricity so important in rural areas. Also, there will be an exhibit of shingle making, an important component in the construction of homes and businesses. Flower and Fine Arts building, where you will find amazing artwork, flowers and vegetable exhibits vying for first prize. You can vote for your favorite while you are there. Would you like to see how we lived in the late 1800’s? The Altamont Fair has many museums to visit – Schoolhouse, Farmhouse, Village and Carriage, Circus, Auto and Antique Machinery. Enjoy a quiet moment exploring the Hardware store seeing early washing machines and vacuum cleaners. The Auto Museum is hosting Satan Cycles of Ravena. The Altamont Fair is the home of one of the finest Antique Farm Machinery collections on the East Coast. The dedicated volunteers work all year long to prepare the exhibit for the Altamont Fair,

The Altamont Fair depends heavily on our volunteer community. Meet Don Miller, a volunteer and
member of the Fair. Walt Miller, Don’s father, served as Treasurer, and the wagon pictured was Don’s grandfather’s wagon from their family farm. Don and Bette kick started our 1890’s roof replacement fund in 2012 – come see the Miller wagon and say Thank You to Don and Bette Miller! Don’t forget the unlimited rides. Unlimited rides are hosted by Reithoffer Shows, the largest traveling midway in the world, providing rides for “kids” of all ages. Success at Nationals and Our Environment
T
he trip to Chicago for the Taekwondo National Championships, was superior. We saw a good portion of this great country and saw all 8 of my student competitors place in the top ten in divisions that had between 20 and 80 competitors and the overall attendance of registered participants of nearly 4,200. We won 2 gold medals and 4 bronze medals. It was a huge success and a delightful journey with the wonderful families I have managed to surround myself with. On the way to Chicago we dropped my in-laws off at Kennedy airport and then drove through the entire length of Pennsylvania on route 80. Once you get out of the excitement of the Water Gap, it is nearly 300 miles of broccoli and cauliflower. Other than the occasional lonely small truck stop, there isn’t really much else at all. It made me think quite a bit about how much of the world is still quite free of our development – even in the populated northeast. I also realized that just over the hill from the highway, there could be a huge open pit coal mine, or some sort of factory. On the return trip from Chicago we stopped at Niagara Falls. There are a lot of really excellent activities to do at the falls, but the most awesome, by the true measure of the word, is the Maid of the Mist. If you have not treated yourself to that close-by experience, you really ought to. Lesson 1 learned: The beauty that surrounds us is plentiful and awesome. Even while driving it can be seen. Take the time to look at it and appreciate it. People have been telling me to stop and smell the roses for years. It is really true. I went to Tawasentha Park the other day with my son. We saw so much wild life while fishing in the Normanskill. I encourage you to get out and see what you can see.

2563 Western Avenue ~ Park Place Plaza ~ Guilderland Next to Candy Kraft www.guilderlandmartialarts.com *$179 rate for first time students only.
Lesson 2 learned: There is a lot to save; there is a huge amount of beauty and undeveloped area. While that area is great, it is getting smaller, and the parts that are developed are affecting many of the undeveloped parts. Additionally, the developed areas are potent in their action. The magnitude of the negative impact of pollution from the burning of fuels and the destruction of trees is astounding. On the drive I said to my children, who are fascinated with advanced and powerful cars, that the next car we buy should be a Tesla, a high end electric car. They of course know it from the Need for Speed racing video game. I hope we can get a Tesla someday. The biggest challenge with some of the environmentally conscious technologies is that they have a high price tag. Although it is a short term cost, it is powerfully dissuasive. If I could have my whole roof covered in solar panels with a Tesla in the driveway that runs off that power too, I would do it tomorrow. The reality is that it is very costly and that is why most roofs are not solar panels. I think the future is bright for further development and lower prices for these technologies. I think that awareness and an appreciation for the delightful planet we have is the start of that trend. This little article is my small contribution. Get out, see it all, save it in any small way you can. Master Rice owns Guilderland Martial Arts and holds a 5th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. FOOD…OR ELIMINATING FOODS IS THE BEST MEDICINE By: Dr. Kim Keeling
W
e have all heard the phrase that “food is the best medicine”. Well, I would like to share a testimony from one of our patients that is truly inspiring. It shows how food can be the cause of your symptoms and the “right” foods can be the best medicine. “My daughter Madeline, now 10 years old complained of headaches for as long as she could express herself. As she got older, they became more frequent and more intense. At the age of three, I noticed that she had a lazy eye so, after seeing a pediatric ophthalmologist, she began to wear glasses to strengthen the muscle. When she complained of a headache, I attributed it to her being sensitive to light, because the glasses would magnify brightness and trigger a headache. Her headaches have always been in the frontal sinus area and range from a 7/10 to a 10/10 on a pain scale. The headaches would often cause her to vomit and she would need to spending hours lying on the couch or in a dark room to fall asleep. The headache would come on suddenly and seem to be triggered by smells of perfume or sometimes foods and loud noises, like the cafeteria at school or after gym class. Last September, when Madeline began fourth grade, she had five days of sever migraines, screaming and thrashing in pain for hours. I was so scared. Again, I took her to the pediatrician, and for the first time the nurse practitioner suggested a medication called Periactin. Madeline noticed relief within hours. Periactin is an antihistamine used years ago to treat seasonal allergies. It’s not used that often anymore because there are so many new over the counter antihistamines. For several weeks she felt great. She was eating and sleeping well. She was able to make it through a full day of school, attend dance class and play soccer. One of the side effects of Periactin is an increase in appetite. Within the first two months she gained 10lbs, which was not alarming because she was so thin to begin with. By the fourth month, she had gained 25lbs and started to have headaches again. She said her appetite was worse and more distracting than having a headache. She was very conscious about choosing healthy foods and snacks with one treat a day (usually ice
cream). The neurologist that we were seeing suggested to increase her dose of Periactin. When I reminded him of her 25lb weight gain in 4 months, he agreed that this was not a good idea. He suggested other medications such as Elavil and Topamax. I was not comfortable with the idea of another medication given the side effects of the Periactin. We started looking into alternative or integrative therapies when we met Dr. Kim Keeling of the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center. Madeline was not thrilled about this idea at all. She did not want to be touched, and she did not want to have to talk about her feelings and what might trigger her headaches. Dr. Keeling provided cranial sacral therapy, which is a very gentle technique, two times a week. The treatments gave Madeline some relief, but not enough to manage her headaches. On our initial consultation, Dr. Keeling suggested that a food sensitivity could be triggering her headaches and recommended a food sensitivity test. Since Madeline was such a healthy eater, I couldn’t imagine that her diet was causing such a terrible problem. Finally, we decided to have Madeline tested for food sensitivities through the company that Dr. Keeling recommended. This is a simple blood test that can test for hundreds of sensitivities including food, molds, food colorings, herbs, medications to environmental toxins. The results were astonishing and very detailed. The results showed that Madeline was severely sensitive to dairy (whey in particular), gluten and about 25 various fruits and vegetables. Her go-to comfort foods, ice cream and bread, have been the culprit all along. For the past eight weeks, Madeline has eliminated all of the foods that she has sensitivities to and she is feeling much better. Within a day of eliminating dairy, she was feeling significantly better. Her mood, alertness and activity have all improved dramatically over time. We have found several replacements for her favorite foods, such as almond milk ice cream. She is trying rice milk products and

gluten free products and recipes that are good and satisfying. Even though she misses some foods, she feels so much better that she gladly resists the temptation to eat the ones she is sensitive to. Also, there are so many foods that Madeline is not sensitive to, allowing her to make healthy choices that make her feel satisfied. When we go to a restaurant, I always mention to the waiter or waitress that she has a dairy & gluten allergy and they are always willing to make suggestions and check with the chef about the ingredients on their menus. Looking back it all makes sense. Periactin is an antihistamine that was blocking the allergic reaction to the foods that she was eating. For weeks after the allergy testing, I was so upset that for all of these years she suffered and missed out on so much. We met with several specialists and her pediatrician and never did anyone suggest allergies, much less food allergies. We are moving on now, enjoying a break from school and finding new ways to prepare foods that are dairy and gluten free. This medication free approach is paying off. Madeline will be a fifth grader next year at Pine Bush Elementary School and we are looking forward to a pain free year, thanks to Dr. Kim and her staff at the Sports and Spinal Wellness Center.” I would like to thank Madeline and her mom, Patti for allowing us to share her story. Hopefully we can help others who may be experiencing similar symptoms. As always, if you have question about food sensitivity testing or another health condition feel free to call the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center for a free consultation at 518-869-3415. Family Court: An Alternative for Domestic Violence Victims In anticipation of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (in October 2013), I wanted to take a moment to highlight the seriousness of domestic violence and resources that are available if you or someone you know are a victim of domestic violence. Domestic violence does not discriminate. There are victims of domestic violence across every age group, race, and gender. It is estimated that 25% of women in the United States has experienced domestic violence in her lifetime. Men are also victims but are less likely to report the violence. It has been estimated that approximately 835,000 men are physically assaulted by an intimate partner each year. The statistics for teenagers that fall victim to domestic violence are also staggering. The Centers for Disease Control has estimated that each year nearly 1.5 million high school students experience domestic violence from a dating partner. Often times when we think about domestic violence we only think about physical abuse. But domestic violence is any pattern of behavior in an intimate relationship that is used by one person to gain or maintain power over the other person. Domestic violence also includes sexual, emotional, verbal, economic or psychological abuse. Sometimes a victim is unable to pursue criminal charges against his abuser in criminal court. When this happens, the victim should know that the family court offers him a remedy. Article 8 of the Family Court Act gives the family court the power to grant an order of protection where the victim alleges that a “family offense” has occurred. A family offense is any of the following conduct: • Disorderly conduct (e.g. obscene/abusive language, fighting, threatening behavior) • Harassment • Sexual misconduct • Forcible touching • Sexual abuse • Stalking • Criminal mischief (e.g. intentionally damaging property of another person) • Menacing (e.g. intentionally placing or attempting to place another person in fear of death or physical injury) • Reckless endangerment (e.g. conduct that creates substantial risk of serious physical injury to another person) • Criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation • Strangulation • Assault

In order for the family court to have jurisdiction, the conduct described above must have occurred between spouses or former spouses, a parent and child, or between “members of the same family or household.” “Members of the same family or household” include people related by blood or marriage, people who have a child in common, and people who are or have been in an intimate relationship (even if the relationship was not sexual in nature). In order to seek an order of protection, the victim needs to file a petition with the family court clerk and allege that a family offense has occurred. While this can be done without an attorney, a domestic violence victim should seek assistance from an attorney (or minimally, a domestic violence advocate) so that he has help in navigating through the court system. Thank you for your continued support! Summertime is here…sunshine and great times with friends…scrap and junk removal. Okay so Haiku is not our strong point, but we’re working on it - when we aren’t busy working for you! (Editor’s Note: Eddie Haskell helped us with that last line). Summer is perfect for relaxing and taking some much needed vacations, but before you get too comfortable… it is also a good time to clean up around your home or office to make way it safer for grilling, swimming in the pool, sipping a cold beverage of choice or just hanging around catching some rays with friends without having to worry about anything else. A lot of our customers have been calling us up for assistance with cleaning out garages and basements as they start bringing up the coolers and setting up the lawn furniture. All this rain has really helped the grass grow and people are discovering that their old mower just isn’t cutting it anymore (wow, some puns just write themselves). And what is worse than finally bringing some nice steaks out to the deck only to find the mice have turned your grill into another Motel Stinks? Maybe it is also a good time to get rid of that leaning trampoline in the backyard, I mean, the kids have been in college for 2 years now. This way you will be able to see your garden again while you sip your morning coffee, instead of having flashbacks of watching your kids smack their heads together trying to attempt a side twisting reverse double pike with full tuck at the same time. We can help! Scrapster is the Capital Region’s premier NO COST scrap metal and appliance pick up and recycling service.
