notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE

5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org

A

s we approach the holiday season and all the hurries and activity, I want to take a few moments to request that all our residents be especially conscious of their neighbors as they move around Town at this busy time of year. Please be careful as you drive or walk; all of us can make safety a primary concern at this special time of the year.

With the winter season ready to descend upon us, our residents should remember the seasonal recreational opportunities that we offer in Guilderland’s parks. While the ground is bare, the extensive trails in Tawasentha Park, the Winter Recreation Area, and the Community Gardens are available for hiking. When snow coats the ground, the same trails are available for snowshoeing and ungroomed cross country skiing, while sledding is enjoyed by many at the Winter Recreation Area. Groomed trails for cross-country skiing are available when weather permits at Western Turnpike Golf Course. Limited amounts of rental equipment are available. Please contact the Parks and Recreation Office at 456-3150 for information on what specific activities and equipment are available on any given day. Guilderland’s Western Turnpike Golf Course will be offering a nice gift opportunity this Christmas season. 2012 season memberships will be available at a special discounted rate for those who pay their membership fees by December 15, 2011. This “early-bird special” represents an extra discount in addition to the normal discount offered for membership fees paid by February 1. Total savings amount to a reduction of nearly 20% off regular seasonal membership rates. Please call the Parks Office at 456-3150 for more information, or go to the Western Turnpike Golf Course page on our website, www.townofguilderland.org for more information on this program and for a downloadable membership application. The economic issues that have plagued our nation, our state, and our region for the past several years

have created a large number of varied issues for our residents. The Town of Guilderland has worked diligently throughout this challenging period to continue to provide essential services without adding to the tax burden of our residents. Careful controls over expenses have been accompanied by the ongoing review of ways in which Town departments can work together to increase the efficiency of Town operations without compromising the efficient delivery of services. We have also worked with both unionized and non-unionized Town employees to participate in our efforts, and as a result, there will once again be no cost-of-living increases provided to Guilderland employees in 2012. Further, certain positions in the Town workforce have been changed from full-year to seasonal status. These efforts have combined to produce positive results, and Guilderland will enter 2012 with a Town budget in place that maintains a strong program of municipal services while once again requiring no increase in the general Town tax rate. The holiday season is a special time of year for Guilderland residents of all backgrounds and traditions. Whatever the variety of celebration in your own household, I would like to take this opportunity to express to you, on behalf of all the Town’s employees and elected officials, my sincere good wishes to all Guilderland families for a safe and enjoyable holiday season, as well as a New Year ahead that will bring happiness and success to all. Kenneth Runion, Town Supervisor

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

appy Holidays!! I am again urging you all to support your locally owned business, be they in the mall or through a website. It looks as if people are doing this; if you have been to Robinsons Hardware or Ta-Da, they are packed!! And there are lots of great DEALS TOO! Lots of good deals for health insurance tooFor the first year in several, many rates for plans that the chamber offers are going down in price! Our HMO plan and EPO plan have only gone up 3%, and yes, many of your transition (mix between co-pay plan and small deductible) and high deductible plans will go down for 2012! Our lowest plan is a high deductible plan (the old major medical) and is only $104 a month. The Chamber is excited to announce that through our group tour company, Celtic Tours, we are offering a trip to Tuscany, Italy in 2012. The trip is an eight day trip where you stay in one beautiful villa and do day trips to Rome, Florence, San Giminiani, and Siena, a wine tasting and much more! The chamber member price of just $2500 includes air, daily bus trips, all taxes and transfers, admissions and tours, a wine tasting, a Tuscan feast, a villa dinner, all breakfasts, the overnights at the villa, and more. It really is all inclusive. The community price is $2700, still a great deal, and a sweet Christmas present!! UPCOMING CHAMBER EVENTS: Fri. LOCAL REAL ESTATE EXPERT OFFERS TO SELL YOUR HOME FOR FREE!

I

t is hard to believe the holiday season is upon us and 2011 is almost in the books. I hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving and are looking forward d to sharing the upcoming holidays with family and d friends. Despite all the media hype on how bad the e real estate market is, homes are still be bought and d sold in the Capital Region. As I look back on the 100+-homes sales I will be involved with by year end 2011, I realized how blessed we have been. 2011 has turned d out to be our best year ever, and I just wanted to take e a moment to say Thank You Guilderland. However, as I reviewed our completed transactionss during the past year one thing struck me. Many, y, many, many of our clients that we sold homes for sold d because they had to, not because they wanted to. o. Often the reasons included divorce, job loss, illness, s or job relocation. These were clients that would have kept their homes if possible but had to sell due to circumstances beyond their control. In retrospect, I realized we often benefited from the misfortune of others that felt the pain of the economy in 2011, which is not the reason we are in business. So here is my proposal. If you find yourself in a situation where you are selling a home, because you have to, not because you want to, call us. We will sell the home of one person (randomly chosen if we receive more than one request by 1/30/12) for free. That’s right absolutely no charge! Here is the fine print, we must legitimately determine, at our sole discretion that you are selling due to a situation beyond your control such as job loss, illness, etc. If we determine this to be

the case, we will sell your home for free! This is not a gimmick where we dump you in the Multiple Listing Service and forget about you. You will receive the exact same 89 point marketing plan that our paying clients receive including our proprietary Internet system, professional photography, and home staging that has made us one of the top residential real estate firms in the Capital Region. It is simply our way of saying thank you and doing the right thing in a tough economy, during a season that is focused on giving. So if you have to sell your home call us at 1-800-4487016 Ext 5555 for a confidential 24 hour recorded description of what you need to do. Have an absolutely fabulous Holiday Season!

A NEW BEGINNING FITNESS (518) 701-6549 • www.anbfitness.com

Making and keeping your fitness goals for 2012… Research shows that people who make New Year’s Resolu ons are 10 mes more successful in achieving them than those who do not. I will guide you through the next three months to help you get started on having a successful year with posi ve change and successful goal se ng. Just follow these guidelines: Begin a Journal: Start December by wri ng down your thoughts and goals for 2012. Begin your journal by honestly answering these ques ons for the upcoming year: What fitness goals do I want to achieve? What is most important to me about achieving those goals? What has prevented me from achieving them in the past? Answering these ques ons may take you all month long. You will really have to take a long, hard look into yourself. Self monitoring, such as journaling, enhances accountability and will keep you focused. Set Specific goals: Ask yourself why you want to achieve your goal at least two mes. Let’s say your goal is to lose 20 pounds by June. Why do you want to lose 20 pounds by June? “So I can be healthy and have more energy to exercise”. Why are you concerned about increasing your health and exercise in this Ɵme frame? “My doctor said if I lose 20 pounds by my next visit, I can get off of my diabetes and blood pressure medicine”. Specific goals uncover your true mo va on so you are be er equipped to customize your fitness program. Set RealisƟc yet Challenging goals: Be realis c. Se ng achievable goals at the upper end of your ability will inspire more effort from you and build your confidence. If you are unsure how to do this, enlist the help of a Professional Trainer or Die cian for guidance. Good trainers have not just mastered Exercise Science , they understand the psychology of peak performance to help their clients achieve more. A er se ng more challenging goals, people tend to think longer, harder, and more crea vely at accomplishing those goals. Set both Long Term and Short Term goals: If your long term goal is to lose 20 pounds by June, that may seem too overwhelming to imagine. However, take that same goal and break it into shorter terms, like losing one pound each week un l June sounds both a ainable and reasonable. Short term goals help you feel a sense of achievement in a rela vely short period of me. They will result in be er performance and a heightened sense of determina on. Successful short term goals make the long term goals appear to be within reach. Believe in yourself: Belief is one of the most powerful predictors of change and success. Those who believe in themselves work harder, achieve more, perform be er, and set effec ve goals. Successful people know what they want from life. Be a successful person…Let today be A New Beginning for You!! Theresa Adams, RN NASM-CPT, CES is a Certified Personal Trainer with an advanced certification in Corrective Exercise Specialization. She is also a Registered Nurse who spent most of her career in cardiology. Theresa instructs Zumba and Aqua Zumba and has been taught to train people of all ages and fitness levels as well as those with special needs including pregnancy. 14

Be Tax-smart According to the Tax Foundation, it took the average American until April 12 this year to earn enough to pay 2011 income taxes. This year, aim to be above average. Start by evaluating whether you can beneďŹ t from tax-smart investing strategies, such as: Ä‘ĆŤTax-advantaged investments and retirement accounts (e.g., IRAs) Ä‘ĆŤ529 college savings plans Ä‘ĆŤHolding stocks for the long term Keep in mind that tax implications should only be one consideration when making investment decisions, not the driving factor.

Q. What can I do to manage Dry Mouth? 1. Drink water frequently to keep your mouth moist and loosen mucus. Carry water with you to sip throughout the day and keep water by your bed at night. 2. Eat sugar-free hard candies, ice chips, or sugarfree popsicles. Chew sugarless gum. These actions help stimulate saliva flow. 3. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol or peroxide. These ingredients will further dry out your mouth. 4. Avoid salty foods, dry foods and foods and beverages with high sugar content. 5. Avoid drinks containing alcohol or caffeine. Alcohol increases water loss by triggering frequent urination. Alcohol, as well as caffeine, also dries out the mouth. Also avoid acidic beverages, such as any fruit juices and tomato juice. 6. Use a humidifier to increase the humidity in your home, especially at night. 7. Quit smoking. 8. Minimize your intake of spicy or salty foods as these may cause pain in a dry mouth. 9. Use a moisturizer on your lips to minimize irritation. 10. Contact our office and we will evaluate your condition. There are specialized dental mouth rinses that can ease the discomfort of dry mouth symptoms.

Q & A with Scott Watson

KEYS TO FUN Guilderland, NY • (518) 862-2233 Q. What year did your music education program for adults 50+ start? A. The Keys to Fun® program started 17 years ago by its founder Lou Lansing and is continued by qualified instructors in four states. Q. Where are you located and were you always in the same location? A. We are currently located at 1736 Western Ave. in Albany but are going to be moving soon to a larger store within two miles of our current location in the beginning of 2012. We ask people to contact our staff for more information. Q. Do you teach children? A. No we only teach adults 50 and over. All of our instructors are specially certified to teach mature adults. Q. When did you get into the business? A. I started in the business in 1996 and am the current President of Keys to Fun. Q. Do you have many regular students? Is there anything specific that they are always coming in for? A. We have over 200 students attending classes and our students come in to see us once a week for classes and sometimes twice when they have a scheduled private lesson. They come in for small group music lessons on the piano, organ and/or keyboard. Q. Are you known for anything special? A. Our specialty is teaching to mature adults age 50+, in fact we just celebrated a birthday with a customer who just turned 91. We are known for taking someone who has never played a musical instrument, can’t read music or “carry a tune in a bucket” to love and enjoy making the kind of music that they love in a way that they can accomplish with great success. Q. What hours are you open? A. We are open most days from 10-5, but we also offer classes in the evening and teach until 8:00. Q. What do you love most about the business? A. All the instructors and I love working with adults and teaching them to play a musical instrument and teach them to fall in love with music all over again. They get to play their music, their way… It is a lot of fun. Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business? A. Convincing people to start is the biggest challenge. Most adults feel they are too old, not dexterous enough, or have no musical ability. I have one student who started when he was 72

and is now 83. He was told he had a “tin ear” and that he should never try to sing or play music. He now enjoys making music and playing in retirement centers bringing them the music that they love. Q. Are their health benefits from being involved in the KEYS TO FUN® program? A. There have been countless studies that have shown the benefits to learning a musical instrument but there is one that is specific to the type of program we teach. The Music Making and Wellness Project headed by Dr. Fredrick Tims of the Michigan State Music Therapy department assembled a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from various universities throughout the United States and Sweden. The study was projected over a five-year span. Phase I was a preliminary trial that took place from January 1996 to September 1997 at Music Centers in Clearwater, Florida. In this phase, 80 subjects were divided into two groups: the experimental group took weekly organ/keyboard lessons of varying levels, whereas the control group did not. All participants were asked to complete written wellness inventory tests to assess general physical health and self-perception of their mental states. The data were collected over 50 weeks: blood tests were taken and participants completed written survey tests every 10 weeks. The research results were positive. Anxiety, depression and perception of loneliness all decreased for those taking music lessons, while very little change occurred for members of the control group. Most significant in the study was that the blood tests of those taking lessons indicated a 90 percent increase during the test period in levels of Human Growth Hormone (hGH), which normally decreases at a rapid rate as one ages. Higher hGH levels will increase energy, while decreasing the occurrence rate of illnesses related to aging. Those not taking lessons showed very little change in hGH levels during the same time frame. Q. When do classes start? A. We start classes a couple of times through out the year and will be beginning classes in the very near future. We teach both day and evening classes through out the week.

DON’T “SURVIVE” THE HOLIDAYS, “THRIVE” THEM Jennifer L. Noonan, Chiropractor

P

lease know, I’m writing this article as much for myself as for all of you! If there is any time of year that can challenge eating habits, stress control, an exercise routine or proper sleep, it’s the holidays. Here are some coping strategies we can try together. #1. Don’t miss your Chiropractic wellness visits! If there is anything I’d love for you to “get” about chiropractic, it’s that it is for OPTIMAL HEALTH, that it STRENGTHENS AND ENHANCES YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM and that it COMBATS THE EFFECTS OF STRESS. #2. Create new, more active traditions. Instead of making 10 different types of cookies, make 2 or 3 and then go snowshoeing, ice-skating or play powder-puff football. #3. Get an exercise partner for the holidays. Accountability can go a long way this time of year. Walking and talking with a friend can be a great way to burn extra calories and reduce your stress level. #4. Take time each day to unwind. Just a few moments a day to have a cup of tea, listen to some music or look through and old photo album can make the difference between surviving and thriving. “You must learn to be still in the midst of activity and to be vibrantly alive in repose.” #5. Don’t aim for perfection, and enjoy the imperfections. I could go on about this one, but rememberthere is no such thing as the perfect holiday. Don’t place unrealistic demands on yourself or those you love. Just be grateful and happy for the important things. #6. Set healthy boundaries and learn to say “NO”. Come on lets say it together… “NO, I’m sorry, I can’t.” Didn’t that feel good? Hope to see you for a life-giving adjustment this holiday season. Please “like” us on Facebook and share how you “thrived”. Dr’s. David and Jennifer Noonan, Albany. We’d love to hear your story!

Dr. Noonan resides here in Guilderland with her husband David, who is also a Chiropractor, and her sons Connor, Noah and Aiden. She is a graduate of Guilderland High School, SUNY Cortland and New York Chiropractic College. She has served families in the community with chiropractic for over 18 years.

GUILDERLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY

2228 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 456-2400 • www.guilpl.com

December Reading from Your Library: Guilderland’s Gathering Place by Barbara Nichols Randall, Director, Guilderland Public Library Say December and here in the Northeast the first things we think of are winter snow and ice! Not surprisingly the library has many books that are about both snow and ice. Our children’s books about snow focus on the joy of playing in it. Perfect Snow by Barbara Reid tells the story of a class building an enormous snow fort with the “perfect first snow of the season. It’s Snowing by Gail Gibbons introduces readers to snow and discusses snowstorms and how to prepare for them. Wilson A. Bentley, known as The Snowflake Man, was the first person to photograph a single snow crystal. His life’s work is fascinating. The library has both books and DVDs that tell his story. You can also see some of his photos visit the Western New York Library Council’s website www.wnylegacy.org.

Two interesting nonfiction books related to winter are Bugs and Bugsicles: insects in the winter by Amy S. Hansen and The Winter Harvest Handbook: year-round vegetable production using deeporganic techniques and unheated greenhouses by Eliot Coleman. If you are still feeling chilled by the prospect of our winter weather, you can do what Kathy Reid-Naiman suggests: Sing the Cold Winter Away: family songs for winter time with a sing-a-long with her CD. Other upbeat musical and visual winter reflections are found in the Sentimental reflections series Winter stories of America’s heritage in scenery and song. And don’t forget all the cookbooks we have with great recipes for hot cocoa! Happy Reading, Barbara

Adult fiction usually focuses on the isolation and hardship of ice and snow. Mystery/ suspense writers Tess Gerritson and Lee Child use the challenging winter weather almost as separate characters in their novels, Ice Cold and 61 Hours.

Selling Your Home in 2011? Getting to the real estate closing table today is much more challenging than a few years ago. During the first 11 months of 2011, only 45% of Guilderland homes listed have actually gone under contract or closed. In this kind of a real estate market you need a realtor with the experience and a proven track record on your side. With over 2000 homes sold and 25 years in the business, Fraida Varah has sold more homes in Albany County than any other realtor.
