5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org
W
ell, Guilderland’s winter has not been particularly cold or snowy overall this year, but it certainly has resembled a typical Capital Region winter a lot more than last year’s did. Since this winter has seen more cold weather and more snowfall than last, people in our area have been able to enjoy various winter recreation activities a lot more frequently. I’d like to remind everyone that we have a good range of choices available in Guilderland’s parks. When weather permits, we offer cross-country skiing at Western Turnpike Golf Course, snowshoeing at Tawasentha Park, the Winter Recreation Area, and at the Community Gardens, as well as sledding on the hill in the Winter Recreation Area. Please check our website, www.townofguilderland.org, or call the Guilderland Parks Office at 456-3150 information on what’s currently available. You can also contact the Parks Office, which is located on Route 146 across from the Tawasentha Park entrance, for information on equipment rentals.
Guilderland’s dog population needs recreation too during the colder months. When you take your dog out for some exercise, though, please remember that, in Guilderland, your dog must be on a leash at all times anywhere within the Town. The only exception is the Town Dog Park, which is located at Nott Road Park. The fully-fenced Dog Park offers pet owners the opportunity for their licensed, well-mannered pets to play off-leash. Whether you are using the Dog Park or just out for a stroll with your dog, please remember that it’s the law that you clean up and properly dispose of animal waste at all times. A sure sign that winter is beyond its halfway mark is the opening of the heated driving range at Western Turnpike Golf Course. The range will be opening on weekends, beginning in February. Seasonal golf course memberships are also available for people who play regularly. Memberships are attractively priced for Guilderland residents. For information on either the driving range or seasonal memberships, please call the Parks Office at 456-3150 during the week, or the Golf Course Pro Shop at 456-0786 on weekends. I’d like to remind Guilderland’s residents to travel carefully and safely around the Town for the rest of the winter. Please avoid piling snow so high at the end of your driveway that it obscures visibility, not only for you, but for approaching motorists as well. Our Guilderland Highway Department does an excellent job with Town roads in bad weather, but please remember to work with them during the winter season by giving yourself a little extra time to reach your destination when there is snow or ice on the roads. t’s cold outside but the days are already getting longer, thank the lord! With a little preparation and warm clothing, I am pretty sure we will once again survive the winter. At the chamber, the weather is making us plan all of our upcoming events. With the success of our Restaurant Weeks, we are trying a lunch restaurant week in April during the week of Administrative Professionals Day. It will give a whole different group of people a chance to go out and enjoy some nice places. Stay tuned for that. The chamber member directory is almost done and will be mailed to businesses and available to anyone at Town Hall, the chamber offices, The Guilderland Library, Guilderland Parks and Rec office or Crossgates Mall customer service. The cost of printing and mailing has become too much to continue mailing them to 6,000 homes for free, but the new directory will be available on our website, with links to the advertisers websites. The chamber is also running low on our town maps, and planning a reprint. Look for them in the spring at the same places you find our directories, and they are also free.

THREE KEYS TO LIFE
W
hen I was in college a friend and I developed a three point philosophy that we felt summed up our approach to any task and life in general at the time. We called them the 3 Keys: Relax, Fluency of Movement and Get the Last Laugh. At the time we were frequently challenging ourselves with physical tasks and working on our BBAs at Pace University in Westchesta (purposeful misspelling). The mention of these two things that we were working on is significant because it is the pursuit of physical excellence in both endurance and dexterity, and the looming inevitability of our entry into careers in the “business world, that lead us to develop the 3 Keys. To this day, when we are together we come up with some sort of game to challenge ourselves. Juggling, throwing a football to each other without moving our feet at all while increasing the distance apart each throw, throwing a football into a garbage can that we keep moving further and further away, sprinting to catch a thrown ball that is further and further out so we have to dive to catch it, juggling a soccer ball back and forth without letting it hit the ground. These are only some examples, there are countless more. We realized that our performance would inevitably be better if we focused on fluency of movement and
relaxation. It is of course true. Any task that you have to perform will be done much better if you can relax and be fluent in your motions. In Taekwondo there are sharp, not necessarily fluent individual movements, but always in the big picture, movements, even sharp ones, must flow together seamlessly and with fluency of movement. We practiced relaxing and being fluent all the time. Then it started to leak over into our school projects, exams and discussions about going out into the business world. That was when we added that we should always get the last laugh. Laughter is a really important key in life and we realized that even when things went sour or pressure was coming from all sides, getting the last laugh was very important. Laughter is practically a cure for almost anything that ails a person. The challenge is that when you are ailing you don’t feel like creating the proper attitude for laughter. That’s when having surrounded yourself with great friends and family helps a lot. The discovery of the 3 keys occurred a few years before I discovered Taekwondo, and continues to affect the way that both of us operate throughout an average day. My friend went on to pursue a career in finance and is very successful, though he does still complain about the “business world and all

of the “games that it can contain. But he is able to function, in no small part, because of our philosophy that we developed together. I as you know abandoned the business gig to pursue a teaching where I could have more consistent fun enjoying the three keys. The tournament season is approaching and our team for New York State and National Championships is larger and more skilled than ever. I hope that we can focus on the three keys while under the duress of performing and sparring. I hope as well that you can relax a little when the pressure is on, move a little fluently and laugh a lot along the way.

LOW BACK PAIN AND DISC INJURIES By: Dr. Kim Keeling
L
ow back pain can be caused by many different conditions. One condition that I see every day with my patients is lumbar disc herniations. I have patients with acute disc injuries, non-surgical disc injuries, chronic disc conditions that flare up and patients that are candidates for surgery but are opting out. Most often, there are secondary issues with the disc injury such as, arthritis, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, nerve impingement causing decreased sensation, weakness or numbness and tingling. These conditions left untreated can continue to cause more pain and faster degeneration of the spine. In between each vertebra (bone) of our spine is a cushion called the intervertebral disc. These discs provide separation of the vertebra. This creates space for the nerves to branch out from the spinal cord and travel to various body regions. The nerves in the cervical spine (neck) travel into your arms and give you strength, sensation and motor control. The nerves in your low back travel into your pelvis and legs to give the
similar functions. The spinal discs also act as cushions to absorb shock and allow for spinal flexibility. Injuries to the disc can occur gradually over time from wear and tear or happen suddenly. Most often, I see patients who have had chronic low back pain for months or even years that they have not treated and will have an acute injury that will result in disc herniation. It is usually happens by doing something simple like bending to pick up something off the floor, or a sudden twist or even a sneeze that will send them to their knees in agonizing pain. They often describe excruciation low back pain with radiating pain into one leg or foot. There may also be numbness, tingling or loss of sensation in the limb. There are different degrees of disc injuries. A disc bulge is an injury in which the annulus, the fibrous outer layer of the disc, is still intact but is pushed out to the side or back in to the spinal cord space. A disc herniation is where there is injury to outer
surface of the disc and the material inside the disc is starting to come out but still intact. A disc extrusion is the most severe injury in which the nucleus of the disc, the gel like material inside, has completely come out of the disc and is in the spinal cord space. All of these can cause nerve impingement. Symptoms typically include lower back and hip pain, pain that radiates into a leg/foot, numbness and tingling. Often times the pain becomes stronger in the leg than the low back. Many of these conditions respond well to chiropractic treatments such as spinal traction or decompression, cold laser therapy and a rehab program involving spinal stabilization. As always, you can call the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center for a free consultation at 518-869-3415. Please visit our website for more information at www.sportsandspinalwellness.com. We would be happy to be a part of your healthcare team.

GUILDERLAND CHAMBER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Interview with Dawn Abbuhl Repeat Business Systems
ADVANCED FAMILY EYE CARE CELEBRATES RIBBON CUTTING The Guilderland Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony in celebration of new business Advanced Family Eye Care, located on Carman Rd., on Thursday January 24.
Q. How long have you been in business? A. The business was started in 1987. We just celebrated 25 years! As part of our celebration, we have our staff donating 25 hours of community service time during work hours. Q. How has your business expanded since the beginning? A. We began in an office that was only 200 square feet – we now have almost 10K! We sold fax machines only and had our inventory stacked up to the ceiling! I had my first child during that time and he learned to stand by holding onto the boxes! In addition to the traditional sales of copiers, scanners, printers, and fax machines we have three divisions: Technology consulting where we maximize every phase of a document’s lifecycle - from input to archive using the most effective hardware, from left to right are software, and technology to implement a strategy that accomplishes and surpasses our customers’ expectations as well as initiating cost savings Guilderland Chamber board member Terry Freeman, owners Michelle and Shawn Hall, and Chamber Board president Jenni Bliven. programs. This is a cutting edge approach as opposed to just selling a copier. IT Consulting, Network Services, Managed Network Services, Outsourced Owner and optometrist Michelle Hall, has been working in the field CIO/CTO Services. This division addresses computer networks and of optometry for 17 years. In most instances, you can scan and store documents by pushing one button on the copier. Q. Can you tell the community about yourself? A. Q. What do you love most about the business? A. I love being able to design a solution that provides a cost savings and efficiency for a customer. The last few years have provided economic challenges for many organizations and we are very proud to be able to offer assistance saving some companies hundreds of thousands of dollars! I also love being on the cutting edge of technology. Q. Does Repeat Business Systems contribute to the community? A. Yes, in fact this is very important to us. To celebrate our 25 anniversary our employees had the great opportunity to donate their time during work hours to the organization of their choice. The past year we have supported over 100 local companies in monetary and In-kind donations. In addition, I’ve had the privilege to mentor many young (and not always young) professionals.

THE CUSTODY OF CHILDREN
I
n our last article, we discussed the legal issues associated with children born to unmarried parents (see, “Parenthood in the New World Order,” Our Towne Mid-January 2013, at pg. 19). In this article, we will discuss New York law concerning the custody of children. There are two components to custody: legal custody and physical custody. “Legal custody” is about the right to make decisions regarding a child’s welfare (e.g. the health, education, and religious upbringing of a child). “Physical custody” is about where the child will live. When one parent has “primary” physical custody, it means that the child lives with that parent the majority of the time. When parents have “joint” legal custody, it means that each parent has an equal right to make decisions affecting the child. It is important to understand the difference between these two components; just because one parent has “primary” physical custody does not mean he will also have “primary” legal custody. The marital status of the parents is not a factor for determining custody. As long as paternity has been established, New York treats each parent the same for purposes of determining custody. In other words, there is no presumption in New York that the mother, for example, has a greater right to custody of the children than the father. If there is no Court Order concerning custody, then either parent has a right to keep the child with him/her. When a Court is asked to make a custody determination (whether legal or physical custody), the Court must make its decision based upon “the best interest of the child, and what will best promote [the child’s] welfare and happiness.” N.Y.D.R.L. Section 70(a). When deciding the “the best interest of the child,” the Court will look at a multitude of factors; for example, the Court can consider the home environment of each parent, the work schedules of each parent, the level of involvement each parent has had with the child, the child’s relationship with each parent, whether either parent nurtures the child’s relationship with the other parent or extended family members. The ability of the parents to communicate effectively and cooperate in making parenting decisions is especially important when a Court is determining whether “joint” legal custody is appropriate.
People sometimes presume that the child’s preference to live with one parent or the other will control the Court’s decision. That presumption is false. While it is true that a Court can consider a child’s preference the Court is not bound by what the child wants. Although single parenthood has become more common, it is important to remember that another person had to be involved in creating the child and the law gives that person certain rights (and responsibilities), regardless of what your preference may be or the status of your relationship with the other parent. Our next article will discuss unmarried couples and the ownership of real property and personal property. Stay tuned! Margaret C. CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH THESE GREAT BOOKS FROM THE GUILDERLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY Submitted by Barbara Nichols Randall
I
n1926 in the United States, when historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History announced the second week of February to be “Negro History Week”. This week was chosen because it marked the birthday of both Abraham Lincoln (12th) and Frederick Douglass (14th). The first celebration of Black History Month occurred at Kent State University in February of 1970. President Gerald Form acknowledged the expansion of Black History Week to Black History Month in 1976. Below are listed some of the Library’s newest books on African-American history. The King years : historic moments in the civil rights movement by Taylor Branch. This work draws on Pulitzer Prize winner Branch’s best-selling Parting the Waters: America in the King Years, 1954-63; Pillar of Fire: America in the King Years, 1963-65; and At Canaan’s Edge: America in the King Years, 1965-68 to sum up key moments of the Civil Rights Movement in one handy volume. A slave in the White House : Paul Jennings and the Madisons by Elizabeth Dowling Taylor ; with foreword by Annette Gordon-Reed ; and A colored man’s reminiscences of James Madison by Paul Jennings. Chronicles the life of a former slave to James and Dolley Madison, tracing his early years on their plantation, his service in the White House household staff and postemancipation achievements as a memoirist. Help me to find my people : the African American search for family lost in slavery by Heather Andrea Williams. Inspired by “information wanted” advertisements that African Americans placed in newspapers to find loved ones after the Civil War, Williams (history, Univ. of North Carolina-Chapel Hill; Self-Taught: African American Education in Slavery and Freedom) examines the emotional and psychological effects of separation and reunion on both free and enslaved African Americans. Using primary sources including slave narratives, letters, extant interviews, and public records, Williams places families’ feelings of loss, grief, fear, anger, and hope in a historical framework. Devil in the grove :Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the dawn of a new America by Gilbert King. Chronicles a little-known court case in which Thurgood Marshall successfully saved a black citrus worker from the electric chair after the worker was accused of raping a white woman with
2228 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 456-2400 • www.guilpl.org three other black men. Elizabeth and Hazel :two women of Little Rock by David Margolick. The names Elizabeth Eckford and Hazel Bryan Massery may not be well known, but the image of them from September 1957 surely is: a black high school girl, dressed in white, walking stoically in front of Little Rock Central High School, and a white girl standing directly behind her, face twisted in hate, screaming racial epithets. This famous photograph captures the full anguish of desegregation -- in Little Rock and throughout the South -- and an epic moment in the civil rights movement. In this gripping book, David Margolick tells the remarkable story of two separate lives unexpectedly braided together. Freedom’s gardener :James F. Brown, horticulture, and the Hudson Valley in antebellum America by Myra B.Young Armstead. Born into slavery in 1793 in Maryland, Anthony Chase was promised his freedom in his late owner’s will, but instead of releasing him from bondage, his widowed mistress allowed him to hire himself out to another wealthy Baltimore household. On August 8, 1827, Chase wrote a remarkable letter to his employer, explaining that he had decided to run away because I want to do justice to myself and to others. Chase made his way to the Hudson River Valley, where, as James F. Brown, he became a highly regarded master gardener on the Verplanck family estate in Fishkill Landing (now Beacon), New York. Diligent and innovative as a gardener and community figure, Brown kept a 10-volume diary from 1829 to 1866. The color of Christ : the Son of God and the saga of race in America by Edward J. Blum and Paul Harvey. Blum and Harvey explore how the image of Christ has been constantly remade to suit the social politics of individual nations, mostly blond-haired and blue-eyed but at times and places decidedly Middle Eastern, even Native American, black, and Hispanic, as believers have struggled to depict a savior in line with their deepest yearnings. African American faces of the Civil War : an album by Ronald S. Coddington About 200,000 African Americans, whether free or escaped slaves, enlisted in the Union army or navy. A dedicated collector of Civil War photographs, Coddington presents cartes de visite, ambrotypes, and tintypes that bring us startlingly face to face with many of these individuals, each with a biographical profile. Are You Throwing Away Thousands of Dollars In Potential Profits? Free Report Reveals 17 Costly Mistakes People Make When Selling Their Homes
Guilderland, NY- John and Jody Smith tried selling their home through a marketing firm that caters to private sellers. After having it on the market for five months and spending over $1,200 for magazine ads and dozens of newspaper classified ads, they threw in the towel. “Once you’re involved, you realize how much you don’t know,” says Jody. “Exactly,” agreed John. “Our original intention was to sell the home ourselves in order to avoid paying a commission but, in all honesty, we bit off more than we could chew. There is much more to selling a home than we ever realized.” About four and a half months after they actively began marketing their own home, one of Jody’s co-workers showed her an article offering a Free Report Revealing 17 Costly Mistakes People Make When Selling Their Homes. Realizing she and John were obviously doing something wrong, Jody immediately called the number listed in the article and left her name and address, requesting a copy of the report. The report arrived in the mail three days later and outlined over a dozen mistakes they were making in their attempts to market their home. In addition, the report offered seven specific steps to take ensuring the sale of their home for the most money in the shortest amount of time. Still, John and Jody had had enough and following the instructions in the report they began interviewing a number of real estate agents to represent their interests in the market. Within thirty days of listing with a professional Realtor, John and Jody sold their home at a very substantial profit. When asked if they had any sage advice to offer anyone else preparing to sell their home, John answered, “Yes. It really doesn’t matter what you end up doing, selling your property yourself or enlisting the services of a licensed Realtor, you would be doing yourself a great favor if you were to request a copy of this free report. I cannot begin to even explain how valuable the information was to us. It literally saved us thousands of dollars and months of wasted time and effort.” Jody agreed, shaking her head and smiling. “That’s right. Requesting a copy of that free report was the one thing we did right. I recommend it to everybody that is even remotely thinking about selling their home.” To receive your FREE COPY of the report: 17 Costly Mistakes People Make When Selling Their Home, Simply call….1-800-448-7016 ext 1001, 24 hrs, for a FREE recorded message.
