une is probably best described as a highactivity, high-energy month here in Guilderland. Warmer weather has arrived, the end of the school year is fast approaching, and people all throughout our community are becoming busy with the vast array of activities that make summertime in our part of the world so enjoyable. I’d like to share with you a few of the things that are happening in Guilderland right now that you may be interested in. The Guilderland Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Dinner and Awards presentation on Wednesday, June 12 at 5:30 P.M. at Mallozzi’s Clubhouse at Western Turnpike Golf Course. Local businesses will be honored for their investment in improving the physical appearance of their business location, as well as for their support of the Guilderland Camber and of the Town’s business environment. More information and registration forms are available at the Chamber website, www.guilderlandchamber.com. Speaking of Western Turnpike Golf Course, local golfers are certain to appreciate the work being done on the course this year. Utilizing new equipment that we recently obtained, our groundskeeping staff has refurbished all of the sand traps on the course. We are also in the process of beginning to repair to the cart paths, starting with the Red Course. These are two areas that people who regularly play golf at Western Turnpike have told us we needed to work on, and we have responded to their input. We are offering several special promotions on greens fees during the month of June, so call the Pro Shop at 456-0786 to book a tee time and to check out the changes that are taking place. Also, please remember that Guilderland residents always enjoy discounted rates upon presentation of a resident I.D. card, which can be obtained at the Pro Shop with proof of residence. The third annual “Mudmania” event will be held at Tawasentha Park on Saturday, June 15, beginning at 11:30 A.M. This family-friendly event includes races (with obstacles and, of course, plenty of mud) for people of different ages and agility levels, along with music, food, and other family-friendly activities. More information and on-line registration forms are available at www.guilderlandrec.com. Proceeds from this event will be used to support the reconstruction of the Tawasentha Park Children’s Playground. We are pleased to announce that the Town Board has recently approved additional funding for this project that will allow for the installation of the first phase of the new playground later this year. The annual Mudmania event will continue

to assist in the acquisition of additional playground equipment in the future. The summer season kicks off for the Guilderland Performing Arts Center on Friday, June 14 at 6:00 P.M. with the “Nervosity” concert, featuring several local high school bands. The Thursday evening concert series will open with a performance by the Guilderland Town Band on Thursday, June 27, at 7:30 P.M. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy some music under the stars. There are a limited number of openings still available for the Guilderland Parks and Recreation’s summer camp program, which begins on Monday, June 24, and runs through August. There are openings in both the half-day day camp program and in the enrichment and sports programs, but, as is usually the case, many of these programs are filling up quickly. Call the Parks Office at 456-3150 for more information, or register on-line at www.guilderlandrec.com. The Town Board has selected Creighton Manning Engineering to work as the Town’s consultant in a project to develop sidewalks along Main Street in the Hamlet of Guilderland Center. This is a project that was strongly supported by residents when a neighborhood plan was prepared for the hamlet several years ago. Grant funds that the Town was able to secure from the New York State Department of Transportation will cover 80% of the project cost. We anticipate completion and approval of all phases of the sidewalk design later this year, and installation of the sidewalks in the spring of 2014. As we get into the summer season, I encourage residents to check in periodically on the websites for the Town of Guilderland (www. townofguilderland.org) and Village of Altamont (www.altamontvillage.org) to view updated information on seasonal community activities. Please walk, bike, and drive safely and courteously so that we can all get the most out of the summer season. Ken Runion, Supervisor

s summer is quickly approaching, we at the chamber are anticipating all the new places opening that are in construction mode now; Dave and Busters Restaurant at Crossgates should be open in August, the Sears Outlet store in Crossgates Commons is open now, Oliva Olive Oil ! in Stuyvesant Plaza….hopefully even VENT Fitness at Hamilton Square will open soon! Some big upcoming events that will bring LOTS of people to Guilderland are the Nervosity Concert Friday June 14, and Mud Mania Mud race on June 15; both at Tawasentha Park, the Old Songs Music Festival at Altamont Fairgrounds June 28-30, and Guilderland High School Graduation at the SEFCU arena on June 22. And don’t forget our Chamber Annual Dinner and Awards, June 12 at Mallozzi’s Clubhouse at Western Turnpike Golf Course. It’s the only business event in town bringing 200 business owners and town leaders together every year. One thing I would like to stress to you this summer is the importance of our local economy; buying local and using local services keeps our dollars and tax money local, employs residents of the community, ensures better service, and makes our town better overall. IF YOU NEED A REFERRAL, CALL THE CHAMBER AT 456-6611. Have a great June! Kathy Burbank, President

FEEDING THE ATHLETE TIPS FOR MANAGING NUTRITION AT TOURNAMENTS By Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling
A
re you spending your weekends sitting at soccer and lacrosse tournaments or the baseball double header? If the answer is yes, then how are you feeding your athlete to perform their best? Sports nutrition is an exploding field and very scientific. There is so much information available that it can often be overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you manage tournament day. Carbohydrates are an athlete’s primary fuel. When eaten, carbohydrates break down into small units of glucose or simple sugar. There are various types of carbohydrates that break down at different rates. Whole grains break down slower than white flour grains. Using whole grains in general is a great idea. But when feeding an athlete who has a soccer game in an hour, it is recommended they get quick fuel by eating simple carbohydrates. Post-game meals or end of the tournament day are good times to eat whole grains. The overall nutrition plan of an athlete should be 50-60% carbohydrates. While fat and protein are important nutrients too, they take longer to breakdown and are best eaten when there is adequate time to digest (such as postgame or at least 2- 3 hours before the game). Pre-game nutrition and eating in between games at tournaments should consist of mainly carbohydrates. Follow these tips to help give your athlete the nutritional edge and keep their energy level high. (The following list does not take food sensitivities or allergies into consideration). 1. It is always better to be prepared for those long days at your sporting event. Take food with you so you can avoid the hot dogs, burgers, fries and soda at the concession stand. Save those foods for after the sport is done for the day. 2. Keep food in a sports bag or in the car: Crackers, cereal, granola/cereal/sports bars, raisins, pretzels, dried fruit, trail mix and water. 3. Take a cooler: Water, diluted fruit juice (apple, orange, cranberry, grape), sports drinks, V8 juice, 1% milk or chocolate milk, yogurt, fruit (bananas, apples, grapes, raisins, oranges, watermelon), vegetables (carrot sticks, celery, broccoli, etc. with a low fat dip), low fat string cheese, turkey or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, bagel with reduced fat cream cheese or peanut butter, pudding and hummus. 4. Carbohydrate-rich pre-game meals: bagels, waffles, pancakes, flour tortilla, oatmeal, white rice, pasta, baked potato, tuna sandwich on white bread, bean burrito, peanut butter sandwich, low-fat yogurt, fig cookies and fruit cereal bar. 5. When eating at restaurants for pre-game meal and between games: Focus on high carbohydrate and low fat foods to refuel and provide energy. Avoid high-fat meats: beef, bacon, ham, sausage, etc. Order foods such as spaghetti, lasagna, breads and salad. Order thick-crust rather than thin crust pizza. Order low-fat toppings on pizza such as mushrooms, green peppers, lean ground meat, onions and skip the pepperoni and sausage. Try vegetable soups or chili with crackers, bread, pretzels, and graham crackers. Avoid deep fried foods such as French fries (try baked potato), fried fish or chicken. Try baked or broiled chicken and fish. Choose leafy green salads loaded with fresh vegetables. Go easy on the cheese, croutons, salad dressing and mayo. I hope this gives you a few ideas to keep the energy high for your athletes this summer. As always, if you have question about this article or a health condition feel free to call the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center for a free consultation at 518-869-3415. REAL ESTATE EXPERT REVEALS INSIDE SECRET TO
PREVENTING EQUITY LOSS WHEN SELLING A HOME Guilderland, NY – The local real estate market is improving and many homeowners are considering selling their homes for the first time due to the increased market activity. It is important to take the correct steps when selling a home to maximize your return. While there are many mistakes that can be made, the number one most costly mistake in this market is PRICING. In a fast changing market, finding the correct price to list a home for the maximum return is difficult. Two recent examples of how pricing your home incorrectly could cost you literally tens of thousands of dollars, drive this point home. John is a client of mine that we closed 3 weeks ago. We sold his home in a week for $345,000 with multiple offers. After the closing he said to me “You know the other real estate agent told me I would be lucky to get $300,000.” This week we went contract on a home at $199,000 after 7 days on the market. Again the seller said to me “The other real estate agent I met with told me I should list at $189,000.” Imagine if these sellers had taken the first advice they received and listed at lower prices? They would have lost at least $55,000 in equity and not even known it. On top of that, they probably would have thanked their real estate agents for selling their homes so quickly. The agents likely would have bragged they received 100% of list price as well! So how does this happen? It happens because pricing a home in a volatile market is difficult and not all real estate agents understand the changing dynamics involved. Home evaluation is a specialty, so why not have a home valuation specialist value your home before you put it up for sale? Currently, for me to obtain my real estate salesperson license requires me to take a 75 hour qualifying course of which only a small portion is devoted to home evaluation. Suddenly after this short class a real estate salesperson is qualified to provide homeowners with a “market analysis” of their home’s value. To become a real estate appraiser that specializes in valuations only is a little more rigorous. For me to obtain my general appraisal certification I had to take 180 hours of specialized valuation classes and spend 3,000 hours of specialized property valuation experience under the guidance of an experienced appraiser. There was also a state audit and exam, before the state would grant me an appraisal license to value property. A specialist will always outperform a generalist. Putting the right price on your home can literally save you thousands of dollars. So be sure to hire an appraiser or make sure your real estate agent holds an appraisal license. With the changing market we have been inundated with property valuation requests. If you are thinking of selling the following site will provide a free instant home evaluation. Of course a more accurate in person appraisal should be completed as well, but this will give you an idea of your home’s value at www.albanyNYhomevalues.com For a more detailed update on current real estate market conditions or the value of your home in call or email us anytime. K Kevin Clancy has been providing real estate appraisal and brokerage services in the Capital District for the past a 118 years. A NYS real estate broker, general certified real estate appraiser, and best selling author, Kevin received an undergraduate degree in marketing from Siena College and an MBA from the University at Albany. He resides in Altamont with his wife and two daughters. Kevin can be reached in the office at 518-861-7016.

50/50 DOES NOT EQUAL $0/$0 by Leyla Kiosse
In recent months, I have had consultations with several clients who told me that they were seeking equal physical custody of the children. While the well-being of the children is often the motivation behind the client’s desire for equal physical custody, sometimes the client tells me upfront that she wants equal custody of the children so that she does not have to pay child support to the other parent. The client is always surprised to learn that equally sharing physical custody of the children does not eliminate the possibility of child support. In New York, child support is governed by the Child Support Standards Act (which is found in Section 240 (1-b) of the Domestic Relations Law and Section 413 of the Family Court Act). Absent a few very limited exceptions, a parent has an obligation to pay child support in New York until his/her child turns 21 years old. When child support is an issue, the parent that does not have the children for the majority of the time (i.e. the non-custodial parent) will be ordered to pay child support to the parent that does have the children for the majority of the time (i.e. the custodial parent). How much child support is paid is determined using a statutory mathematical formula and is based upon the income of the parents and the number of children there are. The law presumes that for each child a certain percentage of each parent’s adjusted gross income1 is to be paid for child support. These percentages are: 1 child – 17%; 2 children – 25%; 3 children – 29%; 4 children – 31%; 5 or more children – 35% This means that if there are two children, the non-custodial parent will pay 25% of her adjusted gross income for child support. The law requires that the non-custodial parent also pay a share of certain other expenses, such as child care expenses and unreimbursed medical expenses. When the court is faced with a shared physical custody situation, it
must still determine who the non-custodial parent is. When parents share custody of the children so that neither parent can be said to have physical custody of the children for a majority of the time, the court will treat the parent that earns more money as the “non-custodial” parent. Baraby v. Baraby, 250 A.D.2d 201 (3d Dept. 1998). This means that if one parent earns $50,000 and the other parent earns $75,000, then the parent that earns $75,000 will be the “noncustodial” parent. Once the non-custodial parent is identified, the court will calculate her child support obligation using the statutory formula and direct the non-custodial parent to pay that amount to the custodial parent. If the non-custodial parent wants the court to reduce the amount of child support, then that parent must prove that the statutory amount of child support is “unjust or inappropriate” based on a series of statutory factors. This is a heavy burden to prove. People tend to think that child support is simple “dollars and cents.” But, as you can see, child support can involve a complicated analysis of the custody arrangement and the financial circumstances of the parents.

Strategies for Life ACHIEVERS But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint (Isaiah 40:31.)
Dennis Waitley said, “All of the top achievers I know are life-long learners... Looking for new skills, insights, and ideas. If they’re not learning, they’re not growing... not moving toward excellence.” Achievers accept the fact that life is like a roller coaster. We will have valleys and peaks. Valleys are times of growth and pruning as well as opportunities to establish our beliefs and values to live by. Expect obstacles and use them to your benefit. If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn't lead anywhere (Frank Clark).

When I think about achievers I think about Erik Weihenmayer. Erik lost his vision when he was 13. He didn't allow his handicap stop him. Erik climbed Mount Everest (29,035 feet) on May 25, 2001, making him the first blind person to summit Everest.
Erik climbed 7 summits which are considered to be the highest peaks in seven continents. Erik doesn't focus on the fact that he’s blind; he focuses on his strengths and the passion to live his life to the fullest. Just like Erik we need to focus on our strengths not our weakness if we want to achieve great things. I want to encourage you to focus on your strengths so if you fail or get rejected you won’t take it personally. Like the “Serenity Prayer say’s, focus on what you can change not what you can’t change.
Ask yourself… 1. What or who comes to mind when you think about the word achieving? Do you consider yourself to be an achiever?

The solutions are called implants. What are some advantages? • Implants preserve natural teeth by avoiding the need to cut down adjacent teeth for bridgework. • Implants will preserve bone and reduce bone resorption. • Long term data on implants suggest that they last much longer than conventional restorations on teeth. • Loose fitting dentures can be replaced with improved support, stability and retention with implants over dentures. • Implants may allow you speak more clearly than with dentures. • Implants may allow you to chew your food better resulting in better digestion and overall health. Implants are becoming the treatment of choice for a number of reasons. Most significantly among these is the expected longevity, strength, stability, and predictability of implant treatment with current technologies. A treatment plan based upon state of the art techniques in implant technology and careful attention to detail will insure that your dental experience will result in a superior comfort level for you to enjoy on a daily basis as well as a smile you’ll be proud to share. Let Us Help Simplify Your Life Summer is almost here and with summer comes a lot of home preparation, inside and out. Make your life better so you can enjoy the great weather by getting some projects done around the house in the simplest way possible: have someone else handle it! One easy is to call a local company like Scrapster to take away your unwanted junk, furniture, broken or outdated appliances, plus any scrap metal type items along with household garbage and yard waste. There are a lot of choices out there for both homeowners and businesses, but we recommend you work with someone who is insured, has USDOT numbers on their trucks and ideally can be found in either the phone book or through a company website. Scrapster fits the bill across the board, and a major advantage to using a company like us, for example, is that we always separate out the scrap metal when we are on a clean out job, which
helps reduce costs significantly in most cases. We have 4 trucks ready to go wherever your job is. We break down and recycle EVERYTHING possible, from the motor out of a washing machine to the electric cords off of a desk lamp. So many things fall under the umbrella of scrap metal that people don’t usually associate with “scrap”, such as car batteries, wire and extensions cords, bicycles, pots and pans, smaller appliances like hair dryers and of course, one of main focuses: household electronics such as computers, DVD players and more. Here at Scrapster we are asked every single day things like “So…how do you make any money picking up appliances for free?” or “You’ve probably seen bigger messes than my garage, tell me you have, right”? There are no secrets here: we are as efficient as possible
when we schedule our pick up loops (“runs”) to include as many stops as possible within the same area. This is how we can pick up that microwave for Mrs. Griffin on one stop and then fill half the truck with the items from the Simpsons garage on the next. And as for that crazy garage, we have seen it all, just about, and the best part is that they always look dramatically better in the end. We look forward to hearing from you. Scrapster is family owned local business which provides a NO COST scrap metal and appliance pick up and removal service. We also offer LOW COST junk removal, TV removal and clean outs. Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. We are convenient, reliable, insured, and we do all the work. Give us a call today at (518) 505-5055 or visit our website at www.scrapster.com.
We care about the Health and Safety of your family!

Guilderland makes Newsweek’s rankings of America’s Best High Schools for second consecutive year May 6, 2013—According to rankings by Newsweek/The Daily Beast of the 2,000 best public high schools in America, Guilderland High School is among the tops in the Capital Region. Of the 2,000 schools cited, 194 came from New York State. Guilderland came in 511 nationally--up from 591 last year--and was the third highest placed Capital Region school on the list. Other area high schools ranked included Bethlehem, Shenendehowa, Shaker, Saratoga Springs, and Voorheesville. To compile the 2013 list of the top high schools in America, Newsweek reached out to principals, superintendents and other administrators at public high schools across the country. In order to be considered for our list, a school had to complete a survey requesting specific data from the 20112012 academic year. In all, more than 2,500 schools were assessed to produce the final list of the top 2,000 schools. The organization ranked all respondents based on the following self-reported statistics from the 2011-2012 school year,
listed along with their corresponding weight in our final calculation: • Four-year, on-time graduation rate (25 percent): Based on the standards set forth by the National Governors Association, this is calculated by dividing the number of graduates in 2012 by the number of ninth graders in 2008, plus transfers in, minus transfers out. Unlike other formulas, this does not count students who took longer than four years to complete high school. We accepted 2011 grad rates from districts that had not yet calculated their 2012 numbers. • Percent of 2011 graduates who were accepted to college (25 percent): This metric reflects the proportion of graduates who were accepted to either a two- or fouryear college for matriculation the fall after graduation. • AP/IB/AICE tests per student (25 percent): This metric is designed to measure the degree to which each school is challenging its students with collegelevel examinations. It consists of the total number of AP, IB, and AICE tests given
in 2012, divided by the total enrollment in order to normalize by school size. AP exams taken by students who also took an IB or AICE exam in the same subject area were subtracted from the total. • Average SAT and/or ACT score (10 percent) • Average AP/IB/AICE exam score (10 percent) • Percent of students enrolled in at least one AP/IB/AICE course (5 percent): This metric assesses the number of students who were exposed to advanced curricula. The number of students enrolled in at least one class was divided by the total enrollment. Data for each of these indicators were standardized using z-scores, in order to measure the relative performance of each school, and then weighted as indicated above to produce an overall Newsweek score for each school.

Phase I of Tawasentha Park Playground Renovation Approved! Let’s Play! We’ve done it! After three years of fundraising from the popular Tawasentha Mud Mania mud runs, we’re ready to go! On Tuesday, May 7th, Supervisor Ken Runion and the Guilderland Town Board approved matching funding for Phase I of the Tawasentha Park children’s playground! Many thanks to the Town Board and the community for supporting this project and helping us reach our goal to make Phase I of the playground a reality.
We’re Not Done Yet! Over the summer, we will be in the planning stages of the playground renovation. Since the play space will be in use during the summer months, we will begin construction in the early fall. But our commitment to completely upgrade the playground will continue. With Phase II, we hope to upgrade the 2 - 5 year old play space and add additional equipment to the playground. So if you haven’t signed up for Tawasentha Mud Mania 3 (Saturday, June 15th), please consider bringing the whole family for this fun, family-friendly obstacle course/mud run. Proceeds from the races will be used for further improvements to the playground. Not interested in running? We still need volunteers (you’ll get a great t-shirt!). Go to www.guilderlandrec.com to sign up or call us at 456-3150 to volunteer and/or sponsor the event. Once again, thanks for your support!
