notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org
Guilderland, NY- Despite that late-April cold snap and accompanying snow showers, I do believe that it’s now safe to say that spring has finally arrived. I suspect that the vast majority of Guilderland’s residents are pleased with the change of seasons, too. We are seeing clear evidence of that with the reappearance of large numbers of walkers and runners on the trails at Tawasentha Park, the full use of the various sports fields at Nott Road, Di Caprio, and Keenholts Parks, and the large numbers of golfers enjoying themselves at Western Turnpike. Our residential neighborhoods are full of bagged leaves and brush at the street edges, a sure sign of residents getting their lawns and gardens in shape for the warmer weather. The sounds of lawnmowers are starting to fill the air as new growth takes hold. Yes, springtime really is one of those times of year when it feels wonderful to live in Guilderland! Sidewalk projects are underway on Western Avenue in Westmere and on Main Street in Guilderland Center. We ask everyone to be courteous and considerate in work zones as these important additions to Guilderland’s infrastructure take shape. Information on lane closures is posted on the Town website, www.townofguilderland.org, as we receive it to help keep residents aware of possible delays. It may be fairly early in the spring season, but we are starting to see quite a few Guilderland families enrolling their children in the Town’s popular summer program, which encompasses both a half-day day camp and a broad array of sports and enrichment camps. These programs have been a familiar part of Guilderland’s summer landscape for many years, and many of the camps fill up early. Program brochures were distributed last month, so take a look to see what works best in your house. You can register in person at the Parks and Recreation Office on Route 146, by mail, or on-line at www.guilderlandrec.com. Please call the Parks and Recreation Office at 566-3150 if you have questions. Western Turnpike Golf Course is open for the season, and is in full swing with both leagues and recreational golfers. Despite a really harsh winter, the course is in good shape for play, thanks to the efforts of our hard-working groundskeeping crew. There are some springtime specials available for golfers in May. Please call the Pro Shop at 456-0786 to inquire about these specials and to reserve a tee time.
The schedule has been set for the 36th season at the Guilderland Performing Arts Center, the home of free Thursday evening concerts at Tawasentha Park. The first event of the season will be the annual “Nervosity” show, featuring a battle of local high school bands. That event will take place on Friday, June 19. The Thursday evening concert series will launch on June 25 with a performance by the Guilderland Town Band., and continue until August 13. The performance schedule is available at www.townofguilderland.org. Sunday, June 21 will mark the return of “Mudmania” at Tawasentha Park for the fifth consecutive year. This allday event includes multiple competitive and “fun run” components throughout the day, along with food and entertainment. Whatever the weather may be on the day of the event, participants are always guaranteed that there will be plenty of mud on the actual racecourse! You can find complete information and on-line registration forms at www. tawasenthamudmania.com. The Guilderland Town Board, at its April 7 meeting, approved a new local law designed to give the Town more clearlydefined authority to deal with abandoned and neglected properties throughout Guilderland. The law requires that properties which are unoccupied for significant periods of time be registered with the Town, and that such properties be maintained by their owners so that they do not become eyesores for neighbors and for others passing through the Town. Residents who believe that there are properties like this in their neighborhoods should report them to the Guilderland Building Department at Town Hall. I urge all our Town residents to get outside and enjoy the many recreational opportunities available to them in Guilderland. We have certainly waited long enough for the opportunity this year!

Anyone who has had the experience of trying to summarize the life of a beloved grandparent into a brief tribute knows how inadequate this process truly can be. How can I summarize how my grandfather’s life touched those who knew him even in the last painful and pain-filled moments of his life. Hospice nurses at St. Peters repeatedly expressed how sweet his nature was and how they understood why he was loved so genuinely. Time and time again people would share with me and my family how they were touched by his gentleness and kindness, which were truly his strengths. His love for his family never wavered, nor did his gift of unconditional love. Into his eighties he took care of his wife of 64 years when dementia ravaged her mind, striving to live a life of quiet dignity. He based his life on living positive values. He gave back to the community in the form of service. He was a volunteer fireman, a committeeman in Rotterdam, Chairman of the Schenectady Boys club, President of the Louise Corning Senior Citizen’s Center, and President of the B’nai B’rith Tenants Association in Albany. Even in his last days in Hospice he joked that maybe he could run for chairman or President of the ward. But it was at the Parkview Apartments where he wrote his monthly articles entitled “With Oshins of Love” and gained the love and respect of many Russian immigrants living there. His articles were always positive, informative, written with care and compassion. When I sit down to write these monthly articles I feel connected to my Grandfather and the process by which he chose to communicate with his community. I hope my articles are informative and help further family dental health. “Oshins of Smiles” is my tribute to my Grandfather. With Oshins of Smiles, Dr. Steven Oshins

Spring Cleaning – Time to Detox Your Body By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling Guilderland, NY - Spring is a time of renewal, refreshing and rejuvenation. I love spring. It feels so good to get out in the fresh air, open up the house and do some spring cleaning. I think many of us start to feel the urge to just be outside working in the yard or to clean out our closets and change over our wardrobe. Spring is also a good time to refresh your body and give it a good clean out too. Have you ever heard of a body detox? What does that mean exactly? Basically, it means to cleanse your body of toxins and impurities which have accumulated in various organ systems. These systems can include the liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph and skin. The toxins come from the environment such as solvents, inhalants, chemicals used on lawns, pesticides and exhaust fumes. Toxins can also come from the products we use to clean our bodies, make-up, home cleaning products, food colorings and additives in our food supply. We are surrounded by harmful toxins. If our bodies are working properly, our organs work together to filter these from our system every day. If our bodies are not working properly, then these toxins can accumulate and can make us feel sick. How do you know if you are holding toxins in your body? Symptoms of body toxicity include brain fog, headaches, insomnia, fatigue, chronic sinus congestion, joint pain and especially constipation. If you are not having 1-2 regular bowel movements each day than you are for sure holding toxins in your body. This is my word of caution. If you suffer from chronic constipation, please do not do a detox without consulting a healthcare professional. You must fix the constipation problem first and then complete your detox. You need to be able to eliminate the toxins you are releasing from within your body. There are many different methods to detox. Most programs start with eliminating the source of toxins. Start by evaluating the products you use on your body and use to clean your home. Do they contain harmful chemicals? What about your food supply? Are
you reading your ingredient label on products? Are there words you can’t pronounce or sound like a chemical? Remember, “real food” does not have an ingredient label- it comes in its natural state. Diet soda is 100% chemicals. Peanut butter should only contain peanuts and a little salt. Take a minute to read the ingredients or “chemicals” on the ingredient label on the flavored ice cream- you will be shocked! You are better off sticking with plain old vanilla or chocolate. Some detox programs require taking some supplements or products that help release the toxins from within your body. (Again, I would use caution with these, especially if you are not familiar with the herbs in the product or are take medications. Talk with a healthcare professional prior to using these.) There are simple detox programs in which you juice fruits and vegetables for a few days or simply eliminate certain foods. Here is my challenge for you. Try a food elimination detox for 3 days. It is simple: eat only plant based foods at your meals and snacks. The main food areas to eliminate are dairy, wheat products (breads & pasta), meats, any packaged foods, sugar, sugar substitutes, caffeine and alcohol. The basic food plan is simple: Oatmeal and fruit for breakfast with herbal tea, a hearty fresh organic green salad (include tomatoes, onions, nuts, dried fruits, hardboiled egg, chick peas, etc.) with oil/vinegar dressing and vegetable soup for lunch. For dinner, enjoy another fresh salad and grilled fish or vegetables. Snack on fruit, vegetables or nuts during the day. Drink clean water with lemon or herbal tea for beverages. Give it a try for three days and see how good you feel! Your digestive system will thank you! If you have questions about this article or our practice please feel free to contact us at the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center at 518-869-3415 or visit our website at ww.sportsandspinalwellness.com. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
2050 Western Ave, Suite 201, Guilderland, NY 12084 (518) 456-6611 • www.guilderlandchamber.com
Guilderland, NY - A while back I saw a photo of a hand written sign on the door of a local businesses somewhere in a town I have probably never heard of. The sign said something along the lines of when you support your local businesses you are helping a family get braces for their child, enabling that business to be able to give a donation to local sports team, and giving a neighbor a chance to be able to put dinner on the table that night. We at the chamber are continuing our quest to help educate our community on the benefits of keeping your dollars local. We have officially kicked off our GuilderLocal campaign, a stay local initiative designed to remind the community to look locally before going out of town or on the world wide web for goods or services. While everyone has heard of shop local campaigns, we feel that we now have to do a bit more than that. We have to also use local services and community organizations because with the internet, the first thing people do is head to Google without ever leaving their house. While that makes it easy for the consumer, it’s making it harder for businesses located in our towns and cities who are constantly supporting our local community. They are losing out on dollars that would stay right here to help our tax base, beautify our area, use other local vendors, and even support local causes.

We hope you are willing to help us! We are in the second phase of our GuilderLocal initiative where we are making it our goal to have most of the businesses in town sporting one of our stickers. Residents are welcome to do the same as well! For your free sticker or for more information please call or email me at 518-456-6611, egauthier@guilderlandchamber.com. JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN, DOES IT MEAN YOU SHOULD? Guilderland, NY - The job of a lawyer is to advise her client as to his options. While the lawyer must advise as to the pros and cons of each option, ultimately, it is for the client to decide for him or herself as to what s/he wants to do, and what the consequences will be. In making any decisions regarding the course and strategy in a matrimonial or family law matter, the following things must be taken into account, much more so than any other legal action: 1. Long term ramifications – When your case is over, the judge, lawyers, experts, and everyone else involved in your process packs up their bags, and goes on their way to their next case. However, you have to live with the fallout. If you have children, you have a lifetime connection with your spouse or partner. Have you said or done things that will prohibit you from ever being able to participate in any events? Is it better to sometimes take the high road than to place your children and family in a lifetime situation of discord? 2. Cost – This is an issue that we have frequently discussed in this column. Are you going to invest more money in fighting about something than it is worth? If you are arguing over the snow globe from your trip to Niagara Falls, you might be able to make another trip and buy a dozen snow globes with what you may pay to fight about it.
3. Chance of success – As a lawyer it is always interesting to bring a novel argument and see where it goes, however, do you want to be the leading case for the next half century? A friend of mine was lecturing at a family law seminar when a woman approached her and identified herself as the child in one of the leading custody cases. She explained to the lecturer that her childhood was awful, and she wished her parents had just worked something out and not spent her childhood fighting in court. 4. Motions and other legal devices – While these are great tools and often need to be used, are you taking an action such as a motion, deposition, etc. to obtain a certain result, or simply to harangue or prolong the process? As lawyers we are lucky to have many tools at our disposal. However, many of these are powerful instruments must be utilized only when needed. Certainly, there are times when you have no good choice but to spend time, money, and energy to fight for yourself and to protect your children. It is important to make sure that is what you are doing, and not simply trying to cause someone else emotional and financial pain. As I always tell my clients, litigation is a very poor means of revenge.

DOES YOUR PORTFOLIO MATCH YOUR RISK TOLERANCE? Guilderland, NY- How much risk are you comfortable taking with your investments? This key question in portfolio construction is very difficult to answer, given a world of high volatility in stock returns, constantly-changing economic conditions, and the fact that none of us can say with certainty how any financial asset will perform in the future! Financial experts often break down an investor’s risk tolerance into three categories: need to take risk, ability to take risk, and willingness to take risk. The “need” and “ability” factors are a function of one’s financial situation – for example, a retiree with a multi-million dollar investment portfolio and no need for portfolio income has a very high ability to take risk (his/her life isn’t negatively impacted if the portfolio drops in value by a lot), and a very low need to take risk (earning high returns won’t help his/her situation). In fact, we find that for many investors, the “need” and “ability” factors merely offset one another. As such, we turn to the critical third factor, one’s “willingness” to take risk. Another way to think about willingness to take risk is how various levels of declines in your portfolio impact your ability to sleep at night. Do you shutter with fear if you hear that the market is down 3% today? Or, do you welcome these downward movements, believing that what goes down will soon go back up? We encourage investors to try to quantify their willingness to take risk by thinking about the maximum portfolio value that they could emotionally tolerate to lose in a down-market. When considering this, try not only to think about your reaction, but how such a drop would impact your financial life, if at all. For example, a 30-year old investor with stable employment may have a difficult time stomaching a 20% loss on her retirement portfolio, however such a loss will likely have little impact on her financial future, as she still has a lot of time prior to needing the money.
Once you settle on a maximum tolerable loss, we suggest that you consider an investment portfolio that has at most two times that maximum loss invested in risky assets, such as stocks, real estate, high-yield bonds, commodities, etc. In other words, if you believe you can tolerate a loss of 20%, we recommend that you hold no more than 40% in risky assets. This follows from the notion that you should be prepared for risky assets to drop in value by 50% from time to time. We’ve seen broad stock market indices suffer losses of this approximate magnitude 3 times in the past 40 years (2007-2009, 2000-2002, and 1973-1974), and it will likely happen again. We suggest that the remainder of portfolio assets should be invested in relatively safer alternatives, such as cash equivalents or investment-grade bonds. Please review your portfolio or consult your financial advisor to determine if your current mix of investments aligns with your tolerance for risk.

SPACE, A COMPLETELY NECESSARY AND ADMIRABLE GOAL Guilderland, NY - I showed my students a video of a recent a empted landing of the Falcon9 launch vehicle developed by SpaceX (a private company that now provides, among others things, resupply missions to our Space Sta on). They are a emp ng to conserve costs, and achieve other goals in Space explora on by returning the launch vehicle safely to earth byy rocket. The landing that I showed was not successful (h ps://vid.me/i6o5) but SpaceX will eventually succeed, and the pursuit of such a goal is cri cal for ourr con nued growth. As we discussed this example of human achievement at the character board before taekwondo class, it occurred to me that I should write the following ar cle for this month’s installment. Are you happy that millions of women worldwide now benefit from earlyy detec on and the curing of breast cancer? Do you like the fact that you can communicate with people worldwide and do extensive research in any field that interests you from a small device in your pocket? Is it a good thing that people can be warned of arriving hurricanes and lives can be saved? Do you enjoy the ac vity of viewing virtually any program you wish from the comfort of your own home? Do you agree that a large parachute that deploys from an aircra in jeopardy and has already saved 200 lives is wonderful? Have you benefi ed from a GPS in anyway these days? If you answered no to these ques ons, then I cannot help you. But if the answers were yes, as I suspect they were, then you support, whether you think you like it or not, our planetary ini a ve to explore Space. This includes both privately and publically funded research and development. The most renowned organiza ons that pursue this ini a ve are of course, NASA, ESA (European Space Agency) and SpaceX.
There are countless other companies that use the services of these organiza ons and s ll others that develop their own technology in the same Space race. Many beneficial experiments can only be performed in Space, many experiments yield different results in Space and Space is where the data we love bounces around among satellites. Satellites for data, communica ons, GPS, assis ng military personnel, weather, climate monitoring, and analysis for maximizing agricultural produc on were not born in space, they had to be put there. That process of ge ng to where we are now, with the life-saving, convenience crea ng, knowledgeable world we live in, took a lot of money and a lot of me. It is a great thing we do and it is a necessary thing we do but it does come at a price. Can you put a price tag on even one life? How about the countless lives that have been saved or may have been saved by technology and knowledge gained from our explora on of Space? If you have a loved one in the military, or is a firefighter, or benefi ng from the use of an MRI machine, or needing a heart transplant so is using a heart pump, or became safe in bad weather due to early warning, then you directly feel this impact, because all of these lives are saved by technology that in part stemmed from research to go to Space. I am not saying that everything we have only came from Space explora on research, nor am I saying that you should just blindly believe me, but if you want to understand what I am talking about, and why we need Space explora on, then use that thing in your pocket to use all that technology orbi ng up in Space and find out for yourself. In the spirit of the promo on of great character, I also want to point out that the research we do now is also selflessly provided to our future genera ons, who may just need to leave the Earth to survive.

Since 2002 as an organization and since 2013 in Albany. Q. Where are you located? A. 1971 Western Avenue in Guilderland, just minutes from Crossgates Mall Q. What is your phone number and website address? A. 518-452-2597 www.workfitmedical.com Q. What hours are you open? A. Employers are investing in the health and wellness of their employees more now than ever before. Our company was founded in response to that need. Our roots are in occupational health (helping employers cultivate healthier, more productive employees), but we have since evolved to offer urgent care, x-ray, physical therapy, and on-site medical services.
Q. Are you known for anything special? A. Ultimately we are known by employers as a medical practice that specializes in helping injured workers return to their jobs quicker and safer thus reducing lost time and saving those employers money on their worker’s compensation premiums. In addition, we are known for performing various types of preemployment/annual medical screenings. These services can include everything from simple drug screens to complicated HAZMAT Physicals. We also want the public to know we accept most major insurances, so in addition to working with employers, we can also provide medical treatment for members of the community! At Albany Walk In Care, our urgent care center, we treat coughs and colds, sprains and strains, and everything in between! Furthermore, if you are currently uninsured, we have convenient menu board prices starting at just $150 per visit! Q. What do you love most about the business? A. We pride ourselves on working to meet our customer’s diverse healthcare needs and we absolutely love playing a key role in keeping Albany’s workforce safe and healthy. We want the community to know that we exist to promote a healthy and positive work environment while providing unsurpassed customer service to our clients and individual customers. We hope the community will turn to us for all of their occupational health and urgent care needs, and we thank you in advance for your business.

Five Common Eye Problems for Baby Boomers… Guilderland, NY - Although our bodies are impressively built machines, they unfortunately are not immune to aging. This reality is now being recognized by an increasingly large por on of baby boomers as they find themselves not seeing as well as they once did.
Five Common Eye Problems for Baby Boomers…
Macular degeneraƟon
is the leading cause of severe vision loss in adults over age 50. The Centers for Disease Control and Preven on es mate that 1.8 million people have AMD and another 7.3 million are at substan al risk for vision loss from AMD. This eye disease occurs when there are changes to the macula, a small por on of the re na that is located on the inside back layer of the eye. AMD is a loss of central vision that can occur in two forms: “dry” or atrophic and “wet” or exuda ve. Common symptoms are: Gradual loss of ability to see objects clearly Objects appear distorted in shape. Straight lines look wavy or crooked. Loss of clear color vision A dark or empty area appears in the center of vision.
Cataract is a clouding of the eye’s naturally clear lens. Most Dry eye is a condi cataracts appear with advancing age, but they can be caused by smoking, diabetes, excessive exposure to sunlight, and medica ons. They currently affect nearly 20.5 million Americans age 40 and older. Common symptoms are: Blurred or hazy vision Reduced intensity of colors Increased sensi vity to glare from lights, par cularly when driving at night Increased difficulty seeing at night
Presbyopia
is a progressive condi on that makes reading and doing close work increasingly difficult. For people in their 40’s and early 50’s, it’s o en the first sign of aging. Even those with perfect eyesight may find they can no longer read books and printed materials at normal distances. Glasses and bifocals can be prescribed to help you adapt to the changes. Common symptoms are: • A tendency to hold reading material farther away to make the le ers clearer • Blurred vision at normal reading distance • Eyestrain or headaches a er reading or doing close work
on in which there are insufficient tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye and for providing clear vision. People with dry eyes either do not produce enough tears or have a poor quality of tears. Dry eye is a common and o en chronic problem, par cularly in older adults. Common symptoms are: • • • •
S nging or burning of the eye. A sandy or gri y feeling as if something is in the eye. Episodes of excess tears following very dry eye periods. Fluctua on in vision.
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause progressive
damage to the op c nerve, and is characterized by death of nerve ssue resul ng in loss of peripheral vision. The most common form of glaucoma, primary open-angle glaucoma, is associated with an increase in the fluid pressure inside the eye. Advanced glaucoma can cause blindness. Primary open-angle glaucoma, develops slowly and usually without any symptoms. Many people do not become aware they have the condi on un l significant vision loss has occurred.

Proposed Library Budget Guilderland, NY - The Library’s Budget comes up for a vote on Tuesday, May 19, and I wanted to share with you the Board’s thoughts on their budget proposal: “The Finance Commi ee of the Board of Trustees has proposed, and the Library’s Board has approved, a 2015/2016 budget of $3,627,471. This budget is based upon a tax-levy increase of 1.62%. The budget – not the tax levy – increases by $85,504, or 2.41% over the 2014/2015 budget. The levy itself will be $3,535,421. Details of the budget are available online at www.guilpl.org/budget. “The driving force behind this year’s proposed budget is two-fold: make every eort to maintain the levels of customer service you are accustomed to, and keep the building in good repair. We are mee ng these goals by ensuring an appropriate staďŹƒng level, and by repurposing limited financial resources to areas that need a en on. The designed life-cycle of our 1992 building is 25 years, and we are reaching that upper limit. We have found that the roof, ligh ng, hea ng and air condi oning all need a en on. It’s similar to maintaining a house, only on a much larger scale.
“In addi on, we are being very aggressive in pursuing matching grants to mi gate the monies the Library will pay for these vital repairs. Among the grants we’ll pursue are those increased construc on-grant funds included in the current State Budget. “While this message may seem detailed, it’s important for us to convey to you, our public supporters, how we are approaching the stewardship of this extraordinary community resource. “The Board of Trustees, responsible to you for ensuring that the library and sta meet the community’s needs, propose this budget and urge you to vote on it on May 19 at your local elementary school.â€?
The Singing Anchors perform at GPL I want to remind you that The Singing Anchors will be performing a free concert at GPL on Sunday, May 17, at 2 pm. WNYT’s Benita Zahn and Jessica Layton, and Jerry Gretzinger (no longer an anchor, but so what?) will fill GPL’s Helderberg Room with their deligh ul harmonies and comedic ris.
“The 2014/2015 budget set aside $90,000 for major repairs; we are adding to that in the 2015/2016 proposed budget. When you consider that the cost of replacing the leaking roof alone is es mated at some $235,000, we’re confident you’ll agree that we are being prudent in our repair planning. “Where did these funds come from? Quite simply, through sta a ri on and re rements, a lower-than-es mated contribu on to New York State Re rement, and an adjustment in materials funds.

What Happens if You Die Without a Will? by Bob and Denise Randall
Guilderland Performing Arts Center
Summer 2015 - Our 36th Season! Guilderland, NY- In a previous column we explained the many things Our Thursday Night Summer Series is Free and you can do with a Will that you cannot accomplish without one. Open to All with Free Parking! Nevertheless, by most estimates, fewer than half of all adult Americans have a Will. The reasons for not creating a Will are varied and often complicated. Is it because that although everyone has got to die, we Friday - June 19 – 6-10 P.M. Thursday - July 23 - 7:30 P.M. harbor a secret belief that an exception will be made in our case? Is it Battle of the High School Bands! The Chris Dukes Band because we think we don’t have enough assets to bother? Or is it because Nervosity Concert Rockin’ Country! we think our property will be distributed the way we want it to be even Free event - Open to all Middle without a Will? The answer to the last question may surprise you. & High School Students! Sponsored by Thursday – July 30 – 7:30 P.M. If you die without a Will, your estate will be distributed in accordance Christ’s Church Guilderland with New York State’s Law of Intestate Distribution. In other words, if Audiostars you die without a Will, the New York State Legislature has determined Rockin Cover Band! how your property will be distributed. Does their plan for your property Sponsored by Thursday - June 25 - 7:30 P.M. match your wishes? Let’s look at a few common scenarios. Crossgates Mall Kathleen Ehlinger Conducting If you die leaving a spouse and no children, your spouse will take all. the Generally, most people want this outcome. But let’s say you die leaving Guilderland Town Band Tuesday – August 4 – 6:00 PM a spouse and two children, ages 5 and 7. The law requires that the National Night Out spouse receive $50,000 plus one-half of the rest. The other 50 % goes Sponsored by to the two minor children. The surviving spouse would need a court Thursday – July 2 – 7:30 P.M. Guilderland Police Dept order to access any of the children’s money, even to spend on necessities. Albany Pro Musica Community Service Unit In effect, your surviving spouse is forced to raise the children on only Sponsored by half of your estate. Stewart’s Holiday Match Thursday - August 6 - 7:30 P.M. If a person were to die with no spouse and no children but with surviving Kathleen Ehlinger Conducting parents, New York’s law says the parents inherit. This is usually a poor the plan because the parents many soon be going into a nursing home. Thursday – July 9 - 7:30 P.M. Bluz House Rockers The money from the estate will pass to the parents and disappear into Sponsored by nursing home expenses. If the parents were already in a nursing home First Niagara Bank and receiving Medicaid benefits, their inheritance would most likely disqualify them from Medicaid. Is this consistent with your wishes? The law mandates a similar outcome if you were to die leaving only grandparents surviving you: one half of your estate would pass to your Thursday – July 16 – 7:30 P.M. Kathleen Ehlinger Conducting maternal grandparents, and one half to your paternal grandparents. the We could present a number of similar scenarios where the result is Guilderland Town Band not what you presumed would happen or intended to happen. To ensure that your wishes with respect to your property are fulfilled, you should consult with an attorney experienced in trusts and estates law to consider the preparation of a Will and/or a Trust. THE RANDALL LAW FIRM is comprised of attorneys Denise M. Randall and Robert G. Randall, Jr. They provide a full range of estate planning services including preparation of wills and trusts, and estate administration (probate). TRASH TALK by Vince Coppola, owner of Scrapster LLC, Scrap & Junk Removal Service
Spring Cleaning Con nues as Summer Approaches! Finally some warm weather. The best thing about this past winter is that if now every single day was 40 degrees out, raining and windy, I’d be like “Wow, this weather is totally awesome!” It is just that perfect me of year, not too hot, not too cold, and WE ALL need to take advantage of it before we start gearing up to curse the upcoming humidity! Yeah, you almost forgot about that, right, back when you were pulling icicles out of your nose every 5 minutes. So here is the plan… At Scrapster we have expanded our focus (is that actually possible? Yes!) on Junk Removal. We have found our niche locally. Our reputa on for fair pricing and great service is growing, thanks to our customers and an increasing amount of referrals. A big advantage is that we separate out scrap metal and appliances don’t typically don’t charge for that, which really can keep costs low on your clean out project. One of this month’s themes is Home Safety. Look around your home-do you see any of the following? • Heavy refrigerators or other large appliances in a basement or garage that are not easy to move. • Gas grills, old propane cylinders or empty metal gas cans. • Rusty metal objects with sharp edges. • Lawn mowers, lawn tractors or snow blowers star ng to leak gas or oil. • Water heater or oil tanks in danger of rus ng through and causing water or property damage. • Broken metal chairs that someone might accidentally sit on. • Bikes or scooters with missing parts, bad brakes or flat res. • Le over yard debris you need to remove before having problems with animals or if you are planning on selling or ren ng a property. • Too many items stacked against a wall or near fire exits that represent a hazard for small children playing nearby. As a scrap metal recycler we operate 100% to make sure appliances and other metal items we pick up are broken down correctly into basic components (wire, motors, etc.) for more effec ve re-use. We also do the same type of separa on when we do clean outs, which involves dona ng items such as clothing, toys and some furniture, while separa ng cardboard, metal, magazines, etc. so they can all be recycled properly. We can help. Scrapster is family owned local business which provides a NO COST/LOW COST scrap metal & appliance pick up and removal service. We also offer LOW COST junk, furniture and TV removal and clean outs. Yes, we do provide television removal! Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. We are convenient, reliable, insured, and we do all the work. “Don’t Worry…We Can Take It!”™ Please call us today for more details about our programs at (518) 505-5055 or visit our website to set up an appointment online at www.Scrapster.com. 28

Petie and Preena are five yr. old very gentle laid-back cats. Preena (which means beautiful female) is long hair, outgoing and loves to cuddle. Petie is short hair and a little shy.
