Looking Back, Looking Forward By Tim Wiles, Library Director

Pretty soon, it will be time to fall back, adjusting our clocks to gain one hour. We looked back a few decades for some festive fun at Guilderland Library Foundation’s 4th Annual Gala, featuring a “Feelin’ Groovy” 1960s/1970s theme, on September 28 at Albany Country Club. We’re grateful for the support of so many to help make our library be the very best it can be. A record 68 people extended their commitment by joining the Honorary Committee - thank you! In addition, we greatly appreciate these key sponsorships:

· · · · · · · · · · ·

Troy Miller Construction/CM Fox Realty - $2,000 Masterpiece Level Jaeger & Flynn - $1,000 Classic Level The Rosenblum Companies - $1,000 Classic Level Butler Rowland Mays Architects, LLP - $500 Bestseller Level The William Coons Team at Howard Hanna Real Estate - $500 Bestseller Level Crossgates Mall - $500 Bestseller Level Expressive Journeys Music Therapy - $500 Bestseller Level Girvin & Ferlazzo - $500 Bestseller Level The Ten Eyck Group - $500 Bestseller Level The Bombardier Family - $250 Novella Level Carter Conboy Law Firm - $250 Novella Level

I’d also like to thank Frank Gallo Florist for donating the floral centerpieces for the Gala. Our sincere thanks to all who support this endeavor! We appreciate the dedicated efforts of our Foundation members, who work hard to organize the Gala and other events throughout the year. Our next Foundation event features children’s author/illustrator Jacqueline Rogers, who will share her story Goblin Moon (ideal for ages 4-8), conduct a craft activity, and sign copies of her book on Saturday, October 12 at 2 pm. The Foundation also works to expand our offerings, and recently donated telescopes and ukuleles to the library for all to enjoy. We also want to express our appreciation to our elected officials who have helped us succeed:

·

Town Supervisor Peter Barber, who has fostered a great relationship between the Town and the library, and who worked with property owners to open Mercy Care Lane behind the library.

·

Assemblymember Pat Fahy, who has earmarked a quarter-million dollar grant to help with the library renovation, and also provided $75,000 back in 2015 to convert every light in and around the library to LED, thus saving us about 25% on our electric bill. I recently nominated Pat for the Senator Hugh Farley Outstanding Advocate for Libraries award, and she won! I will be presenting this award to her at the New York Library Association conference in November.

·

Senator George Amedore, who supported our referendum project with his constituents and who has himself provided over $100,000 to library projects in the past five years, most notably funding the acquisition of a brand new roof. Due to the support and budget votes cast by George and Pat, the library competed for and received $105K for our HVAC revamp this year.

·

Congressman Paul Tonko for his unflagging support of libraries, education, and our community in general

Lastly, I’d like to thank the Guilderland Library staff, which truly makes the library the extraordinary place that it is. Their creativity, passion for the mission, and excellent customer service make GPL the exceptional resource and community gem that I am proud to oversee.

Building Update

Looking forward, we are excited about the prospect of serving you better through the renovation and small expansion of the library approved by voters in May. We’ve been meeting with Butler, Rowland and Mays, a local architecture firm specializing in libraries, to hammer out the details in more depth. Our proposal is currently in review by the State Education Department, and it’s hard to say precisely how long the approval process will take. We’ll have to be patient with the process, as it usually takes a couple of years to turn the conceptual plan into a set of building instructions. At this point, we hope to put the project out to bid in October 2020, and start construction as soon as possible thereafter. We will continue to keep you updated on the process. You can also check our website for building news by clicking on “Library Renewal” on our home page – www.guilderlandlibrary.org.

Happenings

You probably know that we offer seminars, speakers, films, concerts, blood drives, book sales, book discussions, and many other exceptional programs and community events at the library. Did you also know that we have a new Cabaret series? Join us Friday, October 11 at 6:30 p.m. for an after-hours special evening performance of jazz standards, featuring the smooth vocal stylings of Jeanne O’Connor and her trio of musicians. Relax with a glass of wine (with I.D.), hors d’oeuvres, and terrific music. Be sure to register for this program, as space is limited. We plan to host GPL Cabaret Night three times a year, so if you can’t make it this time around, look for the next installment in January.

For Halloween happenings – look no further than your spooktacular local library: Fri. Oct. 25 @ 4-5 pm & 6-7 pm - ESCAPE THE HOUSE ON THE HILL! Can you escape the haunted house with your life? Work with your group to solve puzzles and find clues before time runs out! For teens and adults. Register for either the 4 pm or 6 pm session. Space is limited; please register online, by phone or in person. Tues. Oct. 29 @ 6:30 pm - HALLOWEEN CRAFT GRAVEYARD Choose from a variety of seasonal craft supplies and make one of our projects or invent your own. A great hangout for families or groups of friends, with snacks and Halloween music to enhance the seasonal mood. For all ages; please register online, by phone or in person. Wed. Oct. 30 @ 6 pm - HALLOWEEN PARTY Come dressed in your best costume and be ready to celebrate Halloween with creepy snacks and terrifying activities! For grades 5-12; please register online, by phone or in person. Thurs. Oct. 31 @ 10:30 am - NOT-SO-SPOOKY COSTUME PARTY AND STORYTIME You’re invited to a special costume party and storytime full of songs, stories, and dancing! notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org Guilderland, NY - Fall’s arrival should bring a change to cooler weather, with colorful leaves and plentiful outdoor activities. Please take the time to visit your Town parks, and stop by local farm stands and businesses to purchase apples, pumpkins, and autumn produce. Fall is also a great time to enjoy the Town’s nearly 30 miles of hiking trails in Tawasentha Park, Albany Pine Bush Preserve, Bozen Kill Preserve, Black Creek Marsh Wildlife Management Area, and Vosburgh Trails Open Space. Please check out Hike Guilderland!, a GIS mapping app of hiking opportunities in Town parks, open space, and golf course. Most of these trails can also be used for snowshoeing. This hiking app is part of the Town’s continuing effort to follow recommendations in neighborhood studies for development of a “green infrastructure” of biking and hiking trail maps connecting residential neighborhoods to schools, library, YMCA, local businesses and other points of interest. The Town’s website employs GIS technology well beyond trail maps. The website includes a GIS app with detailed property information gathered from public sources, including zoning, property tax data, and environmental information. The app provides the property’s tax parcel number, assessed value, parcel dimensions and area, contour lines at 2 foot intervals, and zoning district, with an embedded link to allowed uses. The app includes tools to generate basic map layers of streets, municipal boundaries, points of interest, and also dynamic layers of parcel boundaries, zoning districts, flood zones, agricultural districts, and wetlands. You can use interactive tools to measure distances, calculate area, and obtain longitude and latitude coordinates. The GIS mapping assists Town staff in reviewing proposed development projects, planning infrastructure, land acquisitions, and capital improvements. We hope to soon add more layers of GIS property data, such as mapping of the Pine Bush’s recommended parcels for protection. The GIS apps are the latest steps in the Town’s continuing efforts to share publically available information on its website. Over the past year, the Town website added video on demand and indexed recordings of Town, Planning and Zoning Board meetings (www. townofguilderland.org/minutes-and-agenda), and posted copies of pending land use applications on the Town Board and Planning Board webpages. The board meetings are broadcast live on Verizon FIOS Channel 34 and Spectrum Channel 1303. Starting in January, the Town website will include live broadcasts of all board meetings, including the Town’s Industrial Development Agency. The Town has mailed its Fall Newsletter which includes a street schedule for leaf vacuuming and leaf bag pick-up. The schedule is also available on the Highway Department webpage and the Town Clerk’s Office at Town Hall. Please help the Highway Department keep roadways safe for pedestrians, bicyclists, and vehicles by raking or blowing leaves and grass to the edge of the road, and not depositing them on the road surface. With shortening daylight, visibility is important. Please also take care to keep storm drains 6

clear of leaves, debris, and lawn bags so that they can perform the important function of removing stormwater runoff Peter G. Barber - Town Supervisor and avoid erosion and flooding problems. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Highway Department at (518) 861-5108. I thank residents who took time to raise questions and also provide positive comments at DOT’s September 24th informational session about the planned roundabout at the Carman Road/Lydius Street intersection, including a computer-generated simulation on how traffic will flow through the roundabout. I also thank DOT’s staff for providing informational materials and, more importantly, taking the time for small group and one-on-one conversations with residents. As this important project proceeds towards its scheduled 2021 construction, the Town will post updates on scheduled work to the maximum extent possible on its website. As you may recall, DOT’s roundabout project was pushed back to avoid exacerbating any traffic impacts which will likely arise when the Old State Road bridge over the Thruway is removed and replaced next year. The bridge replacement and road closing is scheduled to start next spring and last for seven months. As with the roundabout project, the Town will provide regular construction updates on the Town’s website. The Thruway will install informational signs and detour routes weeks before the closing. Please also take the opportunity to sign up on the Town website for free Nixle® alerts about road closing, detours, and other traffic related issues. I am very pleased to report that the NYS Department of Criminal Justice Services has re-accredited the Town of Guilderland Police Department. The accreditation process involves a rigorous onsite multi-day review of the Department’s organization, fiscal management, personnel practices, records management, and training and operations standards. Only a small fraction of police departments achieve this status. Upon behalf of the Town, I congratulate and thank the command staff and officers for this achievement. On Monday, October 14th, from 10am to 2pm at the Pine Bush Discovery Center, the Albany Pine Bush is hosting Smokey Bear Day. There will be games, interactive exhibits, fire trucks and equipments, and an opportunity to learn about prescribed burns and wildfire prevention. Reservations are requested, but not required, with more information available at www.AlbanyPineBush.org/ events. Thank you again for taking the time to read these notes. Peter G. NEW LOCATION! ĂŞ

Interview with Vivian & Tony Wang

AKANOMI Japanese Restaurant

Q. What year did your business start? A. We recently celebrated 8 years in business! We opened in August of 2011. Q. Where are you located? A. We are located in the Carpenter Plaza, 2568 Western Avenue, at the intersection of Route 20 and 146. We are moving from one end of the plaza to a larger space on the other end. Q. What is your phone number and website address? A. Our phone number is (518) 357-0888 and website is: www.akanomisushi.com Q. What hours are you open? A. Mon.: 4:00 pm - 9:30 pm Tue. - Thurs.: 11:00 am - 9:30 pm Fri. - Sat.: 11:00 am - 10:30 pm Sunday: 12:00 noon - 9:30 pm

Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. We were looking to start a restaurant together. Our search lead us to Guilderland. It is a great community for our business and has a great school district to raise our sons. Q. Do you have many regular customers? Is there anything specific that they are always coming in for? A. Most of our customers are regulars! We offer a wide array of Japanese dishes, such as Miso Soup, Gyoza, California Roll, Tuna Roll and Hibachi Shrimp. Try our food and service today. Come in for a Japanese Lunch Special or you can also online order your favorite Japanese food for take out.

Q. Are you known for anything special? A. Many people enjoy our Hibachi and Sushi Bar! We have several customer favorites such as the Tomo Roll and the Akanomi Roll. Our Local Fireman Roll, made with a recipe provided by a customer, benefits the Guilderland Fire Department in December. Q. Do you sponsor any local teams, if so which ones? A. We sponsor many Guilderland teams and activities. We are fortunate to live in such a great community! Q. What do you love most about the business? A. Connecting with customers! We get to celebrate many milestones with families and watch them grow. Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business? A. Like many small businesses, finding and retaining employees is challenging. We have been fortunate hiring many Guilderland High School students. With our current expansion we are adding waitstaff. If you know anyone interested, please have them stop by. Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. We have been looking to expand for a few years, but we did not want to leave Guilderland. Recently, when space became available in the plaza we are currently located, it seemed like the ideal time to grow. The additional space will feature more comfortable seating, a larger kitchen and sushi bar. We anticipate being open midOctober. Please stop by and visit our new expanded location. We are offering the first 100 customers who mention this story a FREE Polo shirt!

BE AWARE IN OCTOBER

October is known for fun fall festivities, apple and pumpkin picking, carving Jack o lanterns, and picking out a scary Halloween costume. It is also the month to Be Aware! October IS the Month of Awareness! Awareness for many things, such as the awareness of: Dental Hygiene, Chiropractic Health, Domestic Violence, Breast Cancer, Halloween Safety, Health Literacy, and Liver Awareness to name a few. As you may or may not have known these to have October be their dedicated month to make you more aware, You Do Now! There are dedicated months for various things so we can be focused and more alert of what is going on around us. These awareness’s can already be a part of our own lives, affecting you, or someone you know and love. Speaking and hearing about any of these things can be spooky and scary, and may not be easy to do so, but we have to open our eyes and minds to what is out there, and how it may be affecting us. All it takes is a reminder to STOP and take a moment to focus on YOU, or your loved ones. Let October be that time. Stop and think about the answers to these questions:

GHS seniors meet with renowned cancer research scientists Seven GHS seniors recently had the opportunity to meet with two scientists who revolutionized cancer research. On September 24, the students attended the 2019 Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research ceremony, where Drs. Bert Vogelstein and Irving Weissman were recognized for their discoveries in stem cell and cancer cell biology. Their research has led to innovative advances in fields ranging from oncology and immunology to cancer genomics and regenerative medicine. Dr. Vogelstein discovered a key gene that plays a major role in human cancer, and Dr. Weissman is renowned for his groundbreaking research on stem cells and its application to cancer therapy.

NEW YORK’S COURT LABYRINTH by Margaret C. Tabak

Guilderland, NY - Maybe you have heard that New York’s Chief Judge wants to take the labyrinth that is the New York court system and streamline it so that people can go through it without feeling like they are in a maze? Our courts have tremendous overlap, and I can have cases where the family is easily dealing with 3 courts and 4 judges, causing unnecessary expense and delay. Below is an extremely simple explanation of our courts:

Town/Village/City Courts

These are the "people’s” courts. These are the courts that handle minor criminal matters, arraignments, evictions, small claims and traffic violations. For most people, this will be there only interaction with the justice system. Many town courts are extremely busy, for example, the Guilderland Town Court handles thousands of cases a year, with only 3 part time judges. Our local courts are often crowded (standing room only), with people having to wait for hours for simple matters.

County Court

These are actions against the State, mainly civil lawsuits.

This court handles major (felony) criminal matters. This Court tends to receive a lot of attention from the public.

Family Court

Family Court is a court of limited jurisdiction that handles adoptions; juvenile delinquency proceedings (crimes by persons 18 and under); persons in need of supervision (truancy, minor crimes); custody/ visitation; spousal and child support; paternity; abuse/neglect proceedings and family offense cases. Custody and support can overlap with Supreme Court in a divorce action; and certain criminal cases can be heard in family court and a local court.

Surrogate’s Court

This court handles issues dealing with probate and administration of estates, that is, administering the distribution of someone’s assets upon their passing. Surrogate’s court also handles adoptions (like Family Court).

Supreme Court

Court of Claims

This is the trial level court of general jurisdiction. If you are dealing with a divorce, car accident, breach of contract, and a myriad of other civil matters it will be dealt with in Supreme Court. Supreme Court also handles certain actions against the State, mainly Article 78 proceedings. These are often brought against State agencies. As Albany is the State Capital, there are many in Albany County.

Appellate Division

There are four appellate divisions where appeals from the County level and Supreme Courts are sent to. An appeal is seeking a reversal or modification of a case based an error in law or fact.

Court of Appeals

This is the highest court in New York State. The Court of Appeals deals with appeals from the four Appellate Divisions. Judges of the Court of Appeals are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the State Senate. When I explain the court system to clients, I am sometimes asked "are you sure"? because it is so complicated. Unfortunately, I am sure. Here are the 4 courts, 5 judges I talked about: • • • •

Custody and family offense – Family Court (Judge) Support-Family Court (Support Magistrate) Criminal (lower court) Divorce (Supreme Court)

Stay tuned to hear what, if any, changes are made.

Find Some Time for Yourself

5 self-care tips to improve your well-being (Family Features) Between hectic schedules, ever-growing to-do lists and caring for others, it can be easy to put self-care on the backburner. Committing to a healthy diet, getting adequate sleep, reducing stress, exercising regularly and unplugging from your devices can help keep you healthy, both mentally and physically. Consider these self-care ideas from the sleep experts at Mattress Firm to help bolster your well-being. Nourish Yourself While eating well may seem like an obvious self-care tip, it’s not always easy to change your eating habits or replace fast food and sweet indulgences with healthier options. However, properly nourishing your body with the right foods, like fish, leafy green vegetables and berries, can help you maintain a healthy weight, reduce your risk for diseases such as diabetes, improve your memory and reduce inflammation, among other short- and long-term benefits. Get a Good Night’s Rest Getting a proper night’s sleep – most experts recommend 7-9 hours for the average adult – can have a positive impact on how you feel both mentally and physically. Having both the proper routine – limiting caffeine and sugar intake before bed and reducing distractions such as TV or smartphones – and the right mattress can be key to ensuring your bedroom is the sleep oasis you need for quality rest. If you need help when it comes to selecting a mattress, the experts at a retailer like Mattress Firm can help you find the right mattress based on your sleep position or aches and pains from a wide selection of mattress sizes, features and accessories that won’t break the bank. Practice Relaxation Techniques Whether you have a few spare minutes or an entire afternoon of free time, finding a quiet place to relax and practice meditation or yoga can help you reduce stress and anxiety, become more self-aware and create a sense of calmness during even the busiest of days. Try setting up a secluded area in your home (or office) where you can concentrate on your practice and really listen to yourself. Unplug and Unwind With 24/7 access to the internet, social media and television, it can be easy to create bad habits associated with the alwaysconnected, smartphone-obsessed world. However, screens – and the blue light they emit – have been proven to negatively impact sleep and mental performance. Setting aside some time – aim for a couple hours in succession – each day to unplug from your devices and their distractions can lead to better sleep, productivity, emotional wellness and creativity. Make Sure to Move While it’s important to take care of yourself mentally, taking care of your body can be just as important to provide peace of mind. Finding time each day to get in at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, whether it’s a full-blown workout, a walk around the neighborhood with your dog or a bike ride to a favorite destination, can boost your mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and help keep your waistline trim. Find a regimen that works for you, be it multiple short active periods or one long gym session, and make it part of your daily routine for an easy way to boost both your physical and mental well-being. Interview with The Tedeschi Family Q. What year did your business start? A. We opened in Park City Utah in 2016 and in July of this year we moved the business home!

Cryo Lodge

Q. Where are you located? A. 1 Charles Blvd, Guilderland Q. What is your phone number and website address? A. www.cryolodge.net, 518-817-8141 Q. What hours are you open? A. Monday – Thursday: 7am – 10:30am & 12:30 pm – 8:pm Friday: 7am – 10:30am & 12:30 pm – 7pm Saturday: 8:30 am – 2pm

Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. Our oldest daughter ran cross country and track and field at DePaul University in Chicago where she first tried out Cryotherapy after doing a 10K. She quickly became hooked on Cryotherapy just after a few sessions because she was really feeling the difference it made on her recovery time. She started working at the Cryo Spa in Chicago and was always telling us of the benefits she was experiencing while doing Cryotherapy and Localized Cryotherapy. She shared stories of the people that came into the spa in Chicago with various injuries or conditions that cryo was treating. We all quickly became impressed at the fact that her stories didn’t just include results for athletes, but people of all different ages with a variety of different needs for the treatments. We did a lot of research on Cryotherapy and quickly opened our own family business with the goal of helping people heal, recover and feel better. Q. Do you have many regular customers? Is there anything specific that they are always coming in for? A. It is very uncommon that a new client comes in for a first time chill and doesn’t come back. Most people do one or two chills and immediately see the impact and benefit on their body and become “a regular”. Being located inside of the CrossFit Aevitas Facility, we have a lot of regular Aevitas athletes as our regular clients. They really love Whole Body Cryotherapy because of how fast it helps them to recover and get back in the gym the next day for a tough workout. We have regular clients who also come in for overall health and wellness and continually tell us how amazing they feel after using our services and how much better they sleep at night or how energized they feel during the day. We have many clients who suffer from Arthritis or MS and Whole-Body Cryotherapy has helped to eliminate much of their pain.

Q. Are you known for anything special? A. I would say we are known for the family atmosphere we provide. Being a family run business and not a franchise we take the time to really get to know our clients on a personal and professional level. There are evenings where we have customers who have already chilled in the morning but are at the Lodge in the late afternoon or evening just to hang out! Because we are a family business committed to helping people our pricing is significantly less that the others in the area that have to pay their franchise fees. People are amazed at how much lower our pricing is in comparison and utilize the same American made equipment. Q. Do you sponsor any local teams, if so which ones? A. Since we just opened in July we have not sponsored any teams yet. We have, however, sponsored a couple local road races and have donated to many local charities events to provide prizes. Q. What do you love most about the business? A. We really love knowing that we are making a person’s life better by helping them feel better. It brings a smile to our faces when we see a client go from being in unbearable pain to feeling amazing and are getting back to things they enjoy that they couldn’t do prior to Cryo. From a person who can’t sleep at night and finally wakes up feeling rested, to the person who recovers faster from a surgery or has relief from arthritis. We truly enjoy the progress all of our customers make.

Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business? A. Cryotherapy has been around since the 1960’s (in European countries) but is still fairly new to the USA. While it has been really taking off in the past 3-5 years, people are still hesitant to actually make the step towards chilling. Although we have many testimonials, Cryotherapy is usually somewhat scary to folks the first time so getting them in the door and ready to jump in a tank that is -150 becomes a little bit more of a challenge. They compare it to an ice bath when really it is nothing like that. For those that are hesitant to jump into the cold we also have an infrared sauna which clients can sit in a warm environment and get similar benefits to cryotherapy. Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. We are a family business that offers Whole Body Cryotherapy, Infrared Sauna Treatments, Cryo-Toning Facials, Localized Cryo Treatments and Normatec Recovery (compression therapy). All services are designed to help promote wellness and recovery to our community. We provide a warm welcome environment to all our clients and community.

MANAGING OVERUSE INJURIES IN ATHLETES By: Dr. Amanda Boccio

Guilderland, NY -It is estimated that 60% of overuse injuries occur in the lower extremities, with the lower leg and knee being the most frequently injured body areas among high school athletes. Football, soccer, field hockey and crosscountry involve lots of running, which can contribute to repetitive motion strain to the legs. Knee pain, shin splints, and ankle sprains are common injuries among high school athletes. Let’s discuss how to manage these nagging aches and pains so they don’t sideline your child during championship season! Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome: The most common cause of knee pain in athletes. Pain is located right behind, and all around the patella or kneecap. This overuse injury is most often caused by the combination of muscular imbalances and repetitive motion. Tightness in the quadriceps and hip flexors, combined with weakness in the glutes and hip rotators causes the femur or thigh bone to rotate inward, which changes the tracking pattern of the kneecap. When the kneecap does not track properly in its groove in the femur, it causes pressure and pain. One solution to this problem is to strengthen the glutes and hips with exercises such as hip bridges, clamshells, side lying leg raises, and single leg balancing. Working on the flexibility of the hip flexors and quadriceps with daily stretching and foam rolling will also improve muscular imbalances when combined with strengthening exercises. Shin Splints: Throbbing, aching, and sharp pains on the inside of the tibia or shin bone during and after running. This common condition is caused by overuse, sudden increases in activity, inadequate recovery, body mechanics (such as having flat feet), worn-out footwear, and weakness in the ankle, hips and core. When shin splints start to rear their ugly head, take a couple rest days and ice the affected area. Compression socks may also give temporary relief of painful symptoms. Avoid running on hard surfaces, or incorporate cross-training such as biking or aqua jogging. Work on your foot strength and balance to build up the muscles that support your arch. Heel and toe walking will strengthen the muscles of the lower leg. 1 leg balancing will strengthen the muscles that create the arch of your foot. How old are your shoes? It might be time to get a new pair. Once you are able to run again pain free, try to shorten your stride. A shorter stride puts less compressive load on the feet, shins and knees.

Mid-October 2019 |

www.OurTowneGuilderland.com

Chronic Ankle Sprain: When an athlete twists their ankle once, it is more likely to happen again. That is, if the athlete returns to play before the injury heals, or fails to rehabilitate the injured ankle completely. The neural pathway from the brain to the foot is the longest and the slowest, so rehabilitation is essential to restore adequate proprioception and muscular control in order to prevent reinjury. A chronic ankle sprain will feel wobbly, unstable, and be swollen and uncomfortable. Ice and Epsom salt soaks will ease pain and swelling, but strengthening the muscles of the lower leg and foot, as well as improving balance are key to preventing a recurrent injury. Single leg balance, and strengthening the lower leg using resistance bands stabilize the joint so the athlete does not rely on external stability from a brace or ankle taping alone. Be on the lookout for risk factors for overuse injury, which in the high school aged population may include: abnormalities in alignment (flat feet, knock-knees, excessive lumbar lordosis), hypermobile joints, changes in movement patterns following a growth spurt, and a history of prior injury. Sudden increases in volume or intensity of activity, decreased recovery time between practice and competition sessions, lack of proper warm up and cool down, and old, worn-out footwear can also contribute to the development of overuse injury. Overuse injuries are best managed when their symptoms are caught early and appropriate treatment is initiated promptly. If symptoms do not respond to rest and the basic management strategies described above, seek guidance from a trusted health care provider. If you have any questions about how we can help you prevent or manage sports related injuries, please feel free to contact us at the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center at 518-869-3415. We would be happy to be a part of your health care team.

Tel: (518) 813-8805 website: www.VictoriaAcresEquineFacility.org Follow us on social media – Facebook – Victoria Acres Equine Facility, Twitter at @ VictoriaAcres, or on Instagram at Victoria_acres_equine_facility. Or email the facility to learn more at info@VictoriaAcresEquineFacility.com. Q. What hours are you open? A. Victoria Acres offers our lesson programs during the week, Mondays thru Saturdays, by appointment only. Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. Over 20 years ago our Executive Director/ Founder, Erin Pashley saw first-hand what horses did for her stepdaughter. Horses helped her stepdaughter increase her self-confidence, self-esteem, taught her responsibility as well as giving her a purpose. In 2012 Ms. Pashley was given the opportunity to create a facility where horses could help individuals that faced many challenges in their daily lives. Q. Do you have many regular customers? Is there anything specific that they are always coming in for? A. Victoria Acres serves a vast array of individuals with equine-assisted therapies that face daily challenges such as Autism, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Dandy Walker Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, Prader Willie Syndrome, through our PATH Therapeutic riding lesson program. In addition to our therapeutic riding lesson program Victoria Acres Equine Facility

from the ground.

Q. Are you known for anything special? A. Victoria Acres Equine Facility is a PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International) Member Center. Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.), a federally-registered 501(c3) nonprofit, was formed in 1969 as the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association to promote equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) for individuals with special needs. With nearly 4,800 certified instructors and equine specialists and 873 member centers, nearly 8.000 PATH Intl. members around the globe help almost 69,000 children and adults-including more than 6,700 veterans and active-duty military personnel--with physical, cognitive and emotional challenges find strength and independence through the power of the horse each year. Victoria Acres Equine Facility in 2014 chose to become a PATH Center because of their industry guidelines for teaching. Our PATH Certified Instructors maintain the safest, most ethical and effective lesson programs possible for our clients. Each of our Certified Instructors have completed online training courses, completed a minimum of 25 of teaching hours under a mentor, attended a PATH Intl on-site Registered Instructor workshop and an on-site Registered instructor certification.

Once an instructor is Certified, PATH requires the instructor to renew annually and complete 20 continuing education hours to include active participation, professional development and enhancing the instructor’s skills both personally and professionally.

Q. What do you love most about the business? A. What I love most about our organization is the opportunity to watch daily how our herd of horses change our client’s lives. From child speaking their first word on the back of one of our horses, to watching from week to week a client increase their self-confidence and being able to ride independently with limited support. It is truly a blessing to be part of those changes. Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business? A. One of the biggest challengs Victoria Acres has faced since our inception in 2012 is not having an indoor riding arena. Not having an indoor riding arena limited our services to only 7 months out of the year, which left our clients starting over in their lesson programs every Spring. In September of this year Victoria Acres purchased our property and was able to construct an indoor riding arena. Giving our facility the ability to offer year around lesson programs. Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Victoria Acres relies on the support of our community to use horses to change our client’s lives. Our fees for our equine-assisted therapy programs covers only a portion of the actual cost of running our facility. Donations bridge the gap between the fees we charge and the actuals costs to our organization. Victoria Acres Equine Facility is only able to offer our life changing lesson programs with the support of volunteers from our community. With the addition of our indoor riding arena, Victoria Acres will be expanding our programming and will need to increase our volunteer base. If you have 2-3 hours a week to help Victoria Acres change our clients lives you can go to our website at www.VictoriaAcresEquineFacility.org, under the Volunteer Tab to complete the Volunteer Registration Forms.

5 Ways to Empower Kids to End Bullying Use the buddy system. In Scouting, the buddy system pairs kids together to help ensure the well-being of one another. This approach is used for practical and safety reasons that can also be applied to everyday life. A pair or group of kids are less likely to get bullied, and buddies can be supportive by being an upstander.

(Family Features) From the classroom to the internet, bullying can lead to children developing a poor self-image or lead to bullying others. In fact, members of Generation Z believe bullying is the biggest issue facing their generation, according to new data. A survey of American youth ages 6-17, commissioned by the Boy Scouts of America, the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training, found bullying ranked as the top concern for young people in their own communities, across the country and on a global scale. At the same time, 84% of those surveyed said they want to be a part of the solution. Consider these ideas to help your kids learn how to overcome, avoid and break down the cycle of bullying: Promote more time unplugged and outdoors. It is important for parents to promote healthy, face-to-face social interactions. Outdoor activities allow children to work together, solve problems and bond in a way that typically can’t be achieved through a screen. They also give children a break from the cyber-world, where bullying is often prevalent. Encourage kindness. Ninety-seven percent of Gen Z members surveyed said being kind is important. Encourage kids to act on that feeling and remind them that it doesn’t take any extra energy to be kind. Serve as a role model by making kindness a foundation in your family, just as the Boy Scouts of America have done. The Scout Law lists being kind as one of 12 guiding characteristics. Educate and equip. Parents should educate their children about why bullying is never OK, equip them with the knowledge they’ll need to recognize it and encourage them to report and safely respond to all forms of bullying they observe.

Explore differences. As a family, look for ways to get involved in activities that include families from different backgrounds and cultures. Introducing kids to ideas and lifestyles different from their own can be an enlightening experience, and that knowledge can help break down some of the barriers that contribute to bullying, such as fear and misunderstanding. Learn more about ways Generation Z and its supporters can help put an end to bullying at Scouting.org. Improving Communities Creating a better community may be a collaborative goal, but as survey data from the Boy Scouts of America shows, the solutions lie much closer to home and can be inspired by the acts of individuals: · 97% of those surveyed said being kind to others is important. · 84% said they want to be a part of solving community issues in the future. · 79% said improving their community is important. · 50% said the reason they focus on some of these issues because their parents are passionate about them. · Bullying was a top concern among respondents, with 86% of respondents saying that not being bullied is a daily priority and 30% saying that out of 20-plus societal issues, bullying is the problem they most want solved globally. · Other top concerns respondents want to help solve are hunger (28%) and care for elders (27%) at the local level; animal rights (28%) and recycling (28%) at the national level; and poverty (28%) and human rights (26%) at the global level.

Year-End Tax Strategies by Douglas Bauer Guilderland, NY - Earlier this year, we discussed the importance of making income tax planning a year-round activity. This month, we

contributions your employer may have made on your behalf. Please note that HSA contributions are not permitted if you are enrolled in Medicare Part A or Part B.

• For tax year 2019, the standard deduction amounts are $24,400 for married-filing-jointly, $18,350 for head of household, and $12,200 for individual taxpayers and married-filing-separately. If you find that your itemized deductions (which may include, but are not limited to, medical expenses, property taxes, sales taxes, mortgage interest, state income tax payments, and charitable donations) are close to the standard deduction, you may wish to consider pre-paying some 2020 expenses, such as charitable donations. By “bunching deductions”, those who typically are eligible only for the standard deductions may be able to itemize deductions every other year, thereby realizing some income tax savings.

• Depending on your personal tax situation, you may wish to realize capital gains (by selling appreciated securities) or capital losses (by selling securities which are worth less than what you paid for them). Many investors may be able to realize capital gains and pay a tax rate of 0% on their federal return if they are in a 12% or lower marginal income tax bracket. Other investors may benefit from utilizing realized losses to either offset realized gains (no limit) or to offset ordinary income (up to $3,000 per year, with any remainders carrying forward to future years). Please consult your tax preparer and/or financial advisor to determine if any of the above strategies are appropriate for your overall financial situation.
